THE EIGHTY-THIRD ANNUAL EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE DEDICATED TO SAINT THOMAS MORE UNDER THE PATRONAGE OF OUR LADY OF THE ROSARY OF POMPEII Saint Thomas More and Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompeii, pray for us! 2 CATHOLIC MEDICAL ASSOCIATION Upholding the Principles of the Catholic Faith in the Science and Practice of Medicine September 25, 2014 BOARD OF DIRECTORS President Paul J. Braaton, M.D. Dear Colleagues, The Orlando Guild and all the Catholic Medical Association Guilds of Florida are honored to host the 83rd Annual Educational Conference of the Catholic Medical Association. We warmly welcome each of you to Florida, “The Sunshine State.” President-elect Peter T. Morrow, M.D. Vice President Lester A. Ruppersberger, D.O. In these challenging times, Pope Benedict XVI has spoken of the need for “courage to contradict the prevailing mindset…and the courage to stand firm in the truth.” This year’s conference theme, Courage in Medicine: Defending and Proclaiming the Faith in the New Evangelization will examine the grave threats posed by a radical and progressive secularization of our society and its impact on the practice of medicine. We will focus on the virtue of moral courage and its importance to all physicians and medical professionals who bear public moral witness to the critical medical issues of our times. We will underscore the necessity of defending the most vulnerable in our society and expose the tactics being used to dehumanize them. Lastly, we will discuss the critical mission healthcare professionals have in advancing the New Evangelization. Treasurer Marie-Alberte Boursiquot, M.D. Our conference committee has assembled a highly distinguished faculty, representing the fields of medicine, theology, law and journalism. These men and women have been selected not only for their great knowledge but also for the courageous witness they have shown in their respective disciplines. EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR It is our sincere prayer that this conference will enrich the faith and education of all participants and that each of us will leave fortified and inspired by grace and knowledge. We echo the words of Our Holy Father, Pope Francis: “My wish is that all of us, after these days of grace, will have the courage, yes the courage, to walk in the presence of the Lord.” Episcopal Advisor Most Rev. O beloved sick, how doubly dear you are to me, when you personify Christ; and what a privilege it is to be allowed to care for you. Sweetest Lord, make me appreciative of the dignity of my high vocation, and its many responsibilities. Never permit me to disgrace it by giving way to coldness, unkindness or impatience. And O God, while you are Jesus, my patient, deign also to be patient with me, bearing with my faults, looking only to my intention, which is to love and serve you in the person of each of your sick. Lord, increase my faith, bless my efforts and work, now and forevermore. Amen BLESSED MOTHER TERESA OF CALCUTTA 6 PRAYER OF THE CATHOLIC PHYSICIAN LORD JESUS, Divine Physician, who in your earthly life showed special concern for those who suffer and entrusted to your disciples the ministry of healing, make us ever ready to alleviate the trials of our brethren. Make each one of us, aware of the great mission that is entrusted to him, strive always to be, in the performance of daily service, an instrument of your merciful love. Enlighten our minds, guide our hands, make our hearts diligent and compassionate. Ensure that in every patient we know how to discern the features of your divine Face. YOU WHO ARE THE WAY, provide us with the gift of knowing how to imitate You every day as medical doctors not only of the body but of the whole person, helping those who are sick to tread with trust their own earthly path until the moment of their encounter with You. YOU WHO ARE THE TRUTH, provide us with the gift of wisdom and science in order to penetrate the mystery of man and his transcendent destiny as we draw near to him in order to discover the causes of his malady and find suitable remedies for it. YOU WHO ARE THE LIFE, provide us with the gift of preaching and bearing witness to the ‘Gospel of life’ in our profession, committing ourselves to defending it always, from conception to its natural end, and to respect the dignity of every human being, and especially the dignity of the weakest and the most in need. Make us O Lord, Good Samaritans, ready to welcome, treat, and console those we encounter in our work. Following the example of the holy medical doctors who have preceded us, help us to offer our generous contribution to the constant renewal of health care structures. Bless our studies and our profession; enlighten our research and our teaching. Lastly, grant to us, having constantly loved and served You in our suffering brethren, that at the end of our earthly pilgrimage we may contemplate your glorious countenance and experience the joy of the encounter with You in your Kingdom of joy and everlasting peace. Amen JOHN PAUL II THE VATICAN, JUNE 29, 2000 7 The 1995 Restatement of THE OATH OF HIPPOCRATES I SWEAR in the presence of the Almighty and before my family, my teachers and my peers that according to my ability and judgment I will keep this oath and stipulation: TO RECKON all who have taught me this art equally dear to me as my parents and in the same spirit and dedication to impart a knowledge of the art of medicine to others. I will continue with diligence to keep abreast of advances in medicine. I will treat without exception all who seek my ministrations, so long as the treatment of others is not compromised thereby, and I will seek the counsel of particularly skilled physicians where indicated for the benefit of my patient. I WILL FOLLOW that method of treatment which according to my ability and judgment, I consider for the benefit of my patient and abstain from whatever is harmful or mischievous. I will neither prescribe nor administer a lethal dose of medicine to any patient even if asked nor counsel any such thing nor perform act or omission with direct intent deliberately to end a human life. I will maintain the utmost respect for every human life from fertilization to natural death and reject abortion that deliberately takes a unique human life. WITH PURITY, HOLINESS, AND BENEFICENCE I will pass my life and practice my art. Except for the prudent correction of imminent danger, I will neither treat any patient nor carry out any research on any human being without the valid informed consent of the subject or the appropriate legal protector thereof, understanding that research must have as its purpose the furtherance of the health of that individual. Into whatever patient setting I enter, I will go for the benefit of the sick and will abstain from every voluntary act of mischief or corruption and also from the seduction of any patient. WHATEVER IN CONNECTION with my professional practice or not in connection with it I may see or hear in the lives of my patients which ought not be spoken abroad I will not divulge, reckoning that all such should be kept secret. WHILE I CONTINUE to keep this oath unviolated may it be granted to me to enjoy life and the practice of the art and science of medicine with the blessing of the Almighty and respected by my peers and society, but should I trespass and violate this Oath, may the reverse be my lot. Hippocrates, extolled for his moral courage, boldly rejected the relativistic values of Greek mainstream medicine and staunchly defended the dignity of each human life. In today’s contemporary culture of moral relativism, physicians also must courageously battle assaults on human life and human dignity. This three-day conference will examine the grave threats to medical practitioners and their patients that have arisen from a radical and progressive secularization and explore its impact on the medical profession. It will delve into areas of medical practice that demand great moral courage: safeguarding the sanctity of life and the dignity of each patient, defending the rights of conscience, preserving the patient/physician relationship, upholding the importance of natural moral law in addressing increasingly complex bioethical issues, and influencing the culture of medicine through participation in health care decision making. 19 CONFERENCE INFORMATION AUDIENCE & OBJECTIVES INTENDED AUDIENCE This activity is intended for physicians, osteopathic physicians, dental surgeons, dentists, physicians in training (e.g., residents, interns, and medical students), allied health professionals (e.g., physician assistants, nurses, etc.), scientists, members of the clergy, seminarians, and people of good will (general public). EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES The following objectives will be met through the conference presentations: • Recognize the importance of freedom of conscience and conscience protection in their daily practice. • Be aware of the erosion of virtue ethics in the practice of medicine. • Attain competency in addressing the spiritual needs of patients. • Understand the importance of natural moral law in addressing increasingly complex bioethical issues. The lessons of St Thomas More’s life and death are invaluable in our present day. “Blessed Thomas More is more important at this moment than at any moment since his death, even perhaps the great moment of his dying; but he is not quite as important as he will be in about one hundred years time.” —G.K. Zygmunt Zimowski, S.T.D. Pastoral Care in Health and the New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Faith The Thirteenth Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops took place in the Vatican on October 7-28, 2012. Its theme was “The New Evangelization for the Transmission of the Christian Faith”. At the end of their deliberations, the Synod Fathers addressed a Message to the whole world in which specific places for the new evangelization were identified: the family, parishes and the world of health. “You have come into the world as I have, with a mission to fulfill…You have a mission to cure the sick. But if you do not also bring love to the patient’s bedside, I do not think that your medicines will be of much use… Love cannot do without words. And you yourselves, how can you other than by words, bring spiritual comfort to a patient? Bring God to your patients; that will help them more that any other cure.” —St. Padre Pio 43 “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:2 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2014 MODULE IV: Defending the Most Vulnerable Franklin L. Smith, M.D. POLST: Life Sustaining or Life Ending? “Medicine becomes mad medicine when it attacks the patient instead of fighting the disease. We must always be on the patient’s side-always.” —Dr. Jerome Lejeune 44 “Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.” Romans 12:2 FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2014 MODULE IV: Defending the Most Vulnerable Joseph Dutkowsky, M.D. The Face of Modern Eugenics “Medicine becomes mad medicine when it attacks the patient instead of fighting the disease. No Finer Time to be a Faithful Catholic “We live in a time that calls for sentinels and public witness. Every Christian in every era faces the same task. But you and I are responsible for THIS moment. Today. Now. We need to “speak out,” not only for religious liberty and the ideals of the nation we love, but for the sacredness of life and the dignity of the human person, in other words, for the truth of what it means to be made in the image and likeness of God.” —Archbishop Charles Chaput 50 “Be on your guard, stand firm in the faith, be courageous, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2014 MODULE VI: In The Trenches (For Medical Students/Residents) Why Strive for Sainthood? “Some doctors take it for granted that, because that are medical professionals, they can destroy anything. But medicine is not just a profession. The work of a doctor is a consecrated life to the service of others, to put their love for God in the service of the sick. It is not just making money, it is not a business. It is a life of consecration, it is a vocation. God has chosen them to heal, to be His hands in healing, to be His love and compassion for the sick and suffering.” —Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta 51 “I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts.” Habakkuk 2:1 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2014 MODULE VII: On the Home Front (For Spouses) Mary Jo Anderson Acts of Valor “The ordinary acts we practice everyday at home are of more importance to the soul than their simplicity might suggest.” —St. Thomas More 52 “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations.” Matthew 28:19 SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2014 CONFERENCE BANQUET: Keynote Speaker George Weigel Evangelical Catholicism in the Healing Professions “But a lot of what happens to the West during this century will depend on whether a critical mass of men and women embrace the Gospel in full, and have the courage to take the Gospel beyond Galilee and out to the nations.” —George Weigel 53 CONTACTS 54 LOEWS PORTOFINO BAY HOTEL MEETING ROOMS FLOOR PLAN WELCOME to the stunning seaside village of Loews Portofino Bay Hotel at Universal Orlando®.
