This winter’s busy schedule includes regular free public skating sessions, club practices, sessions for school groups and special events. Skating at the Oval relies on the efforts of the volunteers to create and clear the ice and on mother nature to provide cold weather and good skating conditions. Before you visit the Oval we suggest that you check the Oval’s website (www.ontariospeedskatingoval.com) or the Oval’s facebook page for daily updates on ice conditions. There is also a road sign on the Lakefield Road at the new Water Tower entrance across from Kawartha Lakes Construction that will indicate whether the Oval is open or closed. The recreational opportunity available at the Oval is thanks to the hard work of our volunteers and the ongoing support of the Oval’s season sponsors. The Oval does not require funding for any its winter programming from any level of government and the Oval Board appreciates the donations that are made by those who have the opportunity to visit the Oval. New for This Winter Pick-up Pond Hockey Hockey sticks and pucks are not permitted at the public skating sessions, the club practices or the special events – however this winter we will be encouraging those who want to participate in some pick up hockey to come to Oval on Saturday mornings from 10am to noon. The Oval is also made possible through the hard work of a number of individuals who volunteer their time each year. The Oval is always looking for new volunteers. Each year the Oval needs volunteers who are willing to be part of the crew that braves the elements to prepare the ice for skating. The Oval also stages a number of events each year and there is always a need for volunteers who like to help organizing and staging public events. Finally the Oval continues to move towards its ultimate goal of completing the Oval Project as it was original designed through the direction provided by the Oval’s Board of Directors and the organization needs volunteers who are willing to help oversee the Oval’s activities. If you are willing to volunteer in any capacity or you would like to make a donation please visit the Oval website www. ontariospeedskatingoval. com or contact Graham Wilkins at [email protected] or call 705 652 7041. For more information please contact the Ontario Speed Skating Oval [email protected] www.ontariospeedskatingoval.com The Canadian Mental Health Association and the Lakefield Oval Family Day & The Lakefield 5 K The Canadian Mental Health Association Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (CMHA HKPR) has been a long time sponsor of the Lakefield Oval’s activities. CMHA HKPR provides programs and services that promote and support mental health recovery and wellness while working with individuals, families and community partners. Our vision is one of mentally healthy people, living in an inclusive society free from stigma. CMHA HKPR believes that by supporting the winter programs provided by the Oval we can help our community and support our mission and vision. We believe that mental wellness and physical wellness go hand in hand. The Oval provides a wonderful opportunity for individuals and families to stay active and get some exercise in the winter. This exercise can reduce stress, increase energy, improve self confidence, expand brain power and skating at the Oval is a great way to meet new people, stay active with your friends and family and feel a part of our community. CMHA HKPR takes a lead role in organizing the Family Day Skate on Monday, February 16th. We invite you to come and visit us at the Oval – come and learn about our programs, go for a skate and do something positive for your mental and physical well-being. Recreational skating at the Oval is fun for the whole family. Problems Coping? The original concept was to build an outdoor, temperature controlled 400 metre speed skating track that will provide a world class ice surface from mid-November to March each season and a concrete track suitable for in line skating during the spring, summer and fall. The plans also included a Community Building that will be built adjacent to the 400 metre track. The Community Building will include a banquet hall overlooking the Oval, a training facility, offices for the Speed Skating Association, changing rooms for the skaters and the space required to store the ice making equipment. The original Oval concept was based on building a facility that would be owned and operated by a not for profit community corporation. The Oval’s Business Plan established that it is possible to build a facility that does not require on-going government support from any level of government to operate. In an era when tax payers are already hard pressed to pay for essential services the Oval was designed to provide this unique public recreation facility without requiring any tax dollars to underwrite its ongoing operational expenses. The Oval Board submitted a number of well researched, professionally prepared applications for support from the federal and provincial government for the capital dollars needed to build the Oval. These applications needed strong advocates to be successful – political representatives who believed in, understood and publicly supported the Oval Project. Obviously this one of a kind facility requires strong and committed local advocates to overcome the inevitable objections from bureaucrats who are more accustomed to funding municipally owned recreation facilities. To date the Oval’s funding applications that allowed for the completion of the Oval Project have not been successful . The Oval Board remains hopeful that the strength of the original Oval concept and the ever increasing amount of community use of the existing facility will result in a more effective level of political support in the future. In the meantime the Oval Board continues to operate this unique community recreation facility without a financial contribution from any level of government. With the financial support of a great group of local sponsors and the Oval’s dedicated volunteers the Oval will continue to provide the community with the opportunity to enjoy outdoor skating during the winter months. Nordic Day Cross Country Skiing Skate Skiing Snowshoeing Sunday, February 1 Ontario Speed Skating Oval noon - 3:00 pm Adventure Outfitters of Lakefield, Ontario will be providing those interested the opportunity to experience a variety of Nordic Winter Sports. Staff from Adventure Outfitters will be at the Ontario Speed Skating Oval in Lakefield to assist with fitting each participant with a pair of snow shoes or Cross Country Skis and providing a brief ‘how to’ session. There is a trail that has been groomed for X-Country Skiing, Skate Skiing and Snowshoeing adjacent to the Oval site that participants will be able to follow as part of this unique experience. This opportunity will be provided at no charge to participants by the owners of Adventure Outfitters: Adriana & Graham Wilkins and Pat Smith. History of the Oval Project The Ontario Speed Skating Oval is a huge area of Natural Ice that is two and a half times larger than an NHL sized rink. For ten years a group of local volunteers have worked to build a permanent home for Ontario Long Speed Skating in Lakefield. Their initial efforts resulted in a Business Plan that attracted financial support from every level of government and a large number of individuals and local businesses. This support, along with the money raised at a number of successful fund raising events, made it possible for the organizers to purchase a 13 acre parcel of land in the Lakefield South development area and to complete plans for a multi-use community recreation facility to be built adjacent to the outdoor temperature controlled 400 metre long track speed skating oval. The Oval’s organizing group completed the plans and the studies required to build the new Oval Facility in Lakefield. The Oval Board obtained an Official Plan Amendment, along with the necessary Zoning change and Site Plan approval for an outdoor temperature controlled 400 metre Oval and the adjoining Community Building. In the fall of 2009 the first significant stage of work was completed at the Oval site. The result was the completion of Southern Ontario’s only natural ice 400 metre long track speed skating facility in Lakefield. The Oval Board acquired the equipment needed to create a natural ice surface on the 400 metre track – an area that is 2 and a half times the size of an NHL size hockey rink. Over the past four winters the Oval in Lakefield has played host to Olympic style speed skating events, regular practices for local speed skaters, pond hockey tournaments for all ages and a wide array of special events. The Oval provides the general public with regular free public skating sessions which over the past four seasons have attracted thousands of visitors to the Oval. Club speed skaters from across Ontario have been given the opportunity to change into their skates in a heated clubhouse adjacent to the skating oval and the public and school groups have been provided the opportunity to try skating on the club’s rental speed skates. The ultimate goal of completing Ontario’s first outdoor temperature controlled 400 metre Oval remains intact but in the meantime the Oval’s volunteers and supporters have established this community facility that provides skaters from the local community and from across Ontario with the unique opportunity to enjoy outdoor skating on good ice in a wonderful setting. 8 • The Lakefield Herald • Friday, January 9, 2015 • AUTO HOME BUSINESS SERVING PEOPLE IS what we do 441 Water St. (at Brock) Peterborough 705 742 3861 February January BEST islinsurance.ca Ontario Speed Skating Oval & Nordic Centre – 2015 Winter Schedule Monday Tuesday Wednesday Ice Making Thursday 1 2 Ice Making Ice Making 5 Public Skating & Club Practice 4:30 – 6:00pm 6 7 8 12 Public Skating & Club Practice 4:30 – 6:00pm 13 14 15 19 Public Skating & Club Practice 4:30 – 6:00pm 20 21 22 26 Public Skating & Club Practice 4:30 – 6:00pm 27 28 29 2 Public Skating & Club Practice 4:30 – 6:00pm 3 4 5 9 Public Skating & Club Practice 4:30 – 6:00pm 10 16 Family Day Skate CMHA 11:00 am to 3:00 pm 17 Senior Skate 1 ‐3 pm Senior Ski 1 – 3 pm 11 18 Friday 12 19 Saturday 3 Ice Making Sunday 4 10 Family Ski Noon to 2 pm 11 16 Club Practice 4:30 – 6:00pm 17 18 23 Club Practice 4:30 – 6:00pm 24 31 Kawartha Lakes Construction Pick –up Hockey 10 am ‐ noon 1 Adventure Outfitters Polar Fest Nordic Demo Day 7 8 30 Tim Horton’s Candlelight Skate 6 – 9 pm 6 Club Practice 4:30 – 6:00pm 13 Club Practice 4:30 – 6:00pm 9 Club Practice 4:30 – 6:00pm 20 Final Club Practice 4:30 – 6:00pm Sun Life Pick up Hockey 10 am ‐ noon ISL Pick –up Hockey 10 am ‐ noon 14 Family Ski Noon to 2 pm 21 25 TODAY IS A GOOD DAY PlAY hArD.
