President’s Report – December 2015
the President’s Pen
Our birthday Bash was a major success.
Thanks to all the members who attended
and thanks to all the new members who
came along to the BASEQ birthday Bash, I
hope you enjoyed the party. I have had
several members contact me via email
and telephone to express their gratitude
for the day. Collectively praising the
BASEQ committee members, the
organization of the day and the
exceptional quality of the bands and the
music. Also, how friendly the staff were at
Sonny’s. It was an amazing day. You blew
the staff away by drinking so many
whiskey apples and vodka apples. It was the first time the
venue had run out of apples. Well done to all.!!!! The
sound tech Kevin, did a great job. I thought he was the
hardest working individual in the room. He was mixing
sound for all the musicians, all day. He was run off his feet,
but handled it all with complete professionalism. Great job
Kevin! We hope to be able to make our Birthday Bash an
annual event.
Thanks to all the committee and volunteers. What a great
group of doers we have this year. Thanks to Shaun Ballagh,
Ali Troeger, Steve Done, Jeanette Diehm, Dot Gollner, Barry
Beattie, Drew Keepence and Shelley Burden Special thanks
to committee member, Paul Troeger for taking such great
pics to capture the vibe of the day. Thanks to the
volunteers, Sylvia Zigenbien, Duncan Woolard, Daphne
Exelby, Paulette Steele and Mark Hipgrave. Thanks, you all
made our tasks easier on the day.
The Cyril Campbell Award was
presented to Jimmy Budgen this year
for his support of the Blues Music
Industry. He had a dream to use
some land he owned in a beautiful
setting at Mitchell Creek to host a
Rock n Blues Festival. This has come
to fruition, going from strength to
strength in it’s 3rd year for 2015. The
Mitchell Creek Rock n Blues Festival
has had a great community of people attending who enjoy
the music and the comradery. Congratulations Jimmy,
thanks for supporting the Blues.
Our Lifetime Membership Award
was presented to Cath Butler who
has been involved in the Blues music
industry now for the past 10 years.
She has spent many years
volunteering for the Blues
Association of South East
Queensland in different roles.
Editing the Groove for many years
and working behind the scenes in
different capacities. Her first band was Eureka Blue, then
second band was Steppin Out and her third band was Cath
Butler’s Joynt Venture. Winning 2 CHAIN Awards in 2010
for Best Female Artist and Best Newcomer. She had a
career break but continued working with music in different
capacities. Working with the Royal Mail, Booking Bands,
managing their Facebook and Website. It was with great
pleasure to present the award to Cath, one of the hardest
working people in the Blues Industry. Congratulations
Cath!
Congratulations to Dave Burgess for taking home the
Marshall Amp Bar Fridge in our major raffle draw. We have
a new raffle for the next couple of months. Drawn at
Sonny’s House of Blues on the 14th February. This is for a
Double 5 day pass to Bluesfest at Easter. The proceeds of
the next raffle will go toward BASEQ hiring a Grant Writer
so we can grow our International Blues Music Day
celebration In Brisbane to something bigger and better
than last year. Sylvia is our raffle Queen, who will be
attending some of the Blues venues in and around SEQ.
Say g’day to Sylvia and support the association through the
raffle.
We had many new members asking if they could purchase
commemorative T-Shirts on the day. As many of the shirts
were pre ordered, we could not sell them, but are doing
another order of shirts and will have them at the first
BASEQ jam at The Royal Mail Goodna for our jam day 31st
January, 2016 also we will have them at Sonny’s House of
Blues for our jam on 14th February, 2016. Why not come
down to either jams to purchase your commemorative
shirt for Members price of $20 and say G’day.

the President’s Pen Continue.
If you are thinking about what to buy your friends and family
for xmas, and they dig the Blues and live music, why not
consider purchasing them a BASEQ membership for the
year. $25 for a single or $40 for a family. You can do this
online. You will need their email address, mailing address
and telephone number. Go to BASEQ
www.baseqbrisbane.com membership page fill out all their
details and submit form. Pay via direct debit. This will help
us grow our community and membership and ensure
continued events such as the Birthday Bash and it is also a
great gift for those who are hard to purchase for.
Have a Safe and Happy Christmas and New Year. We look
forward to seeing you all next year. In the meantime,
support venues who support LIVE Blues music.
Groove On!

How to sing the “Blues”
1. Most blues begin "Woke up this morning".
2. "I got a good woman" is a bad way to begin the blues,
unless you stick something nasty in the next line, such as, "I
got a good woman with the meanest dog in town".
3. The blues are simple. After you have the first line right,
repeat it. Then find something that rhymes ... sort of, "Got a
good woman with the meanest dog in town. He got teeth
like Margaret Thatcher and he weigh 500 pound".
12. Do you have the right to sing the blues? Yes, if your
first name is a southern US state (like Georgia), you're
blind, you shot a man in Memphis, and you can't be
satisfied. No, if you were once blind but now can see,
you're deaf, or you have a trust fund.
13. Neither Celine Dion nor Anne Murray is permitted to
sing the blues.
14. If you ask for water and baby gives you gasoline, it's the
blues. Other blues beverages are wine, Irish whisky, and
muddy water. The following are NOT blues beverages: any
mixed drink, any wine kosher for Passover, and Snapple (all
flavours).
4. The blues are not about limitless choice. Blues cars are
Chevys and Cadillacs. Other acceptable blues transportation
is a Greyhound bus or a southbound train. BMWs and
Mazdas just don't cut it.
15. If it occurs in a cheap motel or a shotgun shack, it's a
blues death. Stabbed in the back by a jealous lover is
another blues way to die. So is the electric chair, substance
abuse, or being denied treatment in an emergency. But it
is not a blues death if you die during liposuction.
5. Walkin' plays a major part in the blues lifestyle. So does
fixin' to die.
16. Some blues names for women are Sadie, Big Mama,
and Bessie.
6. Teenagers can't sing the blues. Adults sing the blues.
Blues 'adulthood' means being old enough to get the
electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis.
17. Some blues names for men are Joe, Willie, Little Willie,
Big Willie, and Lightning.
7. You can have the blues in New York City, but not in
Hamilton, Ontario, or Vancouver, BC. Hard times in
Saskatchewan or Nova Scotia is just depression.
Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City and Tallahassee are still the
best places to have the blues.
8. The following colours do not belong in the blues:
tangerine, beige and mauve.
9. You can't have the blues in an office or a shopping mall.
The lighting is wrong.
10. Good places for the blues are the highway, the jailhouse,
and an empty bed. Bad places are gallery openings and
weekends away.
18. Persons with names like Autumn, Sequoia, and
Rainbow will not be permitted to sing the blues, no matter
how many men they shoot in Memphis.
19. Other blues names are composed of the following
elements: the name of a physical infirmity (blind, cripple,
etc), the first name (see above) plus the name of a fruit
(lemon, lime, kiwi, etc), and the last name of a President
(Jefferson, Johnson, Fillmore, etc). For example, Blind
Lemon Jefferson, or Crippled Kiwi Fillmore.
20. You can't sing the blues if you are gay. Show tunes, yes.
Blues, no.
Daphne Exelby
11. No-one will believe it's the blues if you wear a suit,
unless you happen to be an old black man, and you slept in
it.

Buzz was there with his disciples
Still showing us how it’s done
I heard mention the Bomb Shelter
Many fans there he’d won
Well I headed into Sonny’s
It’s called the House of Blues
Thought safer to take a bus
Bound to have an ale or two
20th
It was the
birthday bash
For all the BASEQ members
Smoking hot bands & cold
beverages
Some may have trouble to
remember
A welcome greeting at the door
By Dez with a friendly bunch
A free t-shirt & drink as well
I’d better soon get some lunch
First up was Devil’s Kiosk
No wonder Jamie’s won awards
The Blues Doctor & Presidents
After each song the crowd roared
Mojo did his signature tunes
He nailed it with ‘The Cat’
A real showman up on stage
No bullshit mate & that’s that
Up next were Hat Fitz & Cara
How do they generate such sound?
The wild man & the Irish lass
A better duo will not be found…….
Harvey’s solo with the 4 Pillars
The highlight was a Freddy King
That was my vote for the night
And he didn’t even have to sing
Big Deal brought back Little Walter
Fraser was smooth upon the keys
Shaun & the horns were awesome
Can it get any better than these?
The Bella Reunion front man
Had us feeling the pain of his song
When Ms Fabian belted out ‘At Last’
That was it for me, I was gone
I’m sure The Walters fired up
But by then I’d pulled the pin
I’d stumbled at the last hurdle
That bloody ginger beer did me in
With the wobbly boot on I departed
Into a sweltering Brisbane heat
Burnt out, but well satisfied

marketing for the Healer. She noticed many booking agents were
not paying the artist what they were worth, so she thought that
BASEQ could give musicians a bit of leverage with the agents. This
was to be kind of like a union for Blues Musos. She was also keen
on organising venues to provide a circuit for touring musos.
Neither of these things came off.
Lorraine was quite shy so she asked Mick Diggles if he could take
of the role of President for the first year. That first year
particularly was quite fiery! Our first meetings were at Souths
Leagues Club and Van Gogh’s Earlobe until we settled at the
Healer. Tim Strachan was the first Secretary, Paul King was on the
first committee and I was the Assistant Secretary. I was the first
person to start the newsletter, The Groove, which I edited til I left
the Association.
BASEQ and the Blues Scene were also well supported by RAVE
Magazine, at the time. I had a weekly blues column in that so I
could really plug BASEQ events. I would also fax blues gigs to all
the blues radio shows. I ended up doing a weekly gig guide too
but had to give it away when I got too busy. It is much easier
these days keeping in touch with blues lovers and BASEQ
Members with the introduction of the Website and being able to
email The Groove to Members.
