8 Grade D.C. Trip

Do you know
what D.C. stands
for? Well, most of
the 8 grade class
knows that it
means; District of
Columbia, but
others may
not. The class recently went on a four-day trip to
the United States Capitol, Washington D.C. On
the trip, they visited and went through four states,
and they saw another one. They visited
Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, and
saw New Jersey right across from the Delaware
River.
The first day, they went for an eight and a half
hour drive to D.C. and to their first stop: the
Holocaust Museum. There, they saw many
images and artifacts that show what the Holocaust
was like and how badly people were treated during
that time. Then, they went to the Natural and
American History Museums. In the Natural
Museum, they saw fossils, skeletons, fish and
many other exhibits. The American History
Museum consisted of the War of 1812 Flag, The
Wizard of Oz ruby slippers, and some of
America's technology that changed the way we
live today. They also saw the Washington
Monument, World War II Memorial, Jefferson
Memorial, Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK),
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR), and the
Pentagon Memorial.
The second day, they visited Philadelphia to
see Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the
Cathedral, and the Rocky Balboa statue.

While on their third day of the trip, they came
to a visit at the White House, the Capitol, and
Mount Vernon where George Washington lived.
Day four, they went to the Iwo Jima Memorial,
the Arlington National Cemetery, and the Wreath
Laying Ceremony. Lastly, they went to the
National Air and Space Museum.

Prince the King

When Doves Cry in the Purple Rain is a sad
time for everyone. Prince Rogers Nelson died
Thursday April 21 , 2016, at the age of 57. He
was found dead in an elevator at Paisley Park
Studios. Many people have been mourning his
death, such as Inner Circle, a band, and fans
worldwide. Doctors performed an autopsy on
April 22nd, 2016, one day after his death, but they
aren’t expecting results for another two and a half
weeks. Prince was diagnosed with AIDs six
months before his death. Prince also contracted
HIV positive virus in the 1990s.
He was married two times, but divorced both
times. His first son, Gregory, died only one week
after birth, from Pfeiffer Syndrome, a rare defect
in the skull. Shortly after his wife, Mayte Garcia,
became pregnant again with their second child, she
had a miscarriage. After the children's deaths,

their marriage soon fell apart. The children he had
with Garcia were the only kids he had of his own.
His remains were cremated, and there was a
private, beautiful ceremony. They plan on having
a musical ceremony later. Fans from all over the
world stopped at the Paisley Park complex, and
dropped off 15 purple boxes filled with T-shirts,
CDs, and books. Purple was the King’s color.
So who gets Prince’s millions? Prince did not
have a will for his money. When Prince died, his
net worth was $300 million. Three days after his
death, $2.3 million worth of songs were sold. The
bank ordered that his safe was to be opened, so
they could look for a will. There is still no trace of
Prince’s will.
Prince created and joined many bands: The
New Power Generation, 3rdeyegirl, The
Revolution, 94 East, and Madhouse. Some of his
most famous albums include Lovesexy, Sign ‘O’
the Times, Batman, 1999, and N.E.W.S. Let's go
on a ride to talk about his songs and bands like
Little Red Corvette. I would hate to Purple Rain
song titles on you, but he lives his life as if it was
a party in 1999.
You don’t have to be cruel to rule Prince’s
world.
Stranded Man in an Inflatable Bubble

Traveling 1,033 miles across the Atlantic
Ocean is what Reza Baluchi wanted to
accomplish. His main goal was to run for world
peace. On April 26, 2016, Baluchi was going to
depart from Florida and start his wild
adventure. Too bad a Coast Guard stopped
Baluchi. The Coast Guard thought it was way too
dangerous for a man in a bubble to travel that great
distance.
The Coast Guard was from Miami, Florida, and
he knew that the ocean was dangerous so he towed
the bubble back to shore. Baluchi also tried this
attempt
before in
2014. The
Coast Guard
told Baluchi
that he shouldn’t do it again, but he did
anyway. Three days later, he asked for more help,
and this time a helicopter came and rescued
him. The Coast Guard warned him once, and now
that he did it again the Coast Guard is super mad
about the situation.
The bubble was a Hydro Pro Bubble, and it was
to be used as a hamster wheel and float above the
ocean. Baluchi said that the temperature inside the
bubble could rise up to 120 degrees
fahrenheit. He also said that his strategy to
survive was to catch fish, eat protein bars, and
sleep on a hammock inside the bubble. The
bubble has little air holes in the top so Baluchi
could breath in the pod. Being inside the bubble is
an easy way to suffocate or become dehydrated.
It is unbelievabubble that he came up with this
idea.
The Great Whale
Sharks

The whale shark is
a fascinating creature. First of all, they are
surprisingly enormous; they can weigh up to
41,000 pounds and can grow to be more than 40
feet long! The sad part, though, is that the
population has been decreasing steadily over the
past few years.
For example, an investigation provides
evidence that a factory in China is cutting up 600
of the 21-ton fish a year for meat, shark fin soup,
skin to make bags, and its oil. The Chinese accuse
these great creatures of killing and attacking
people. The officials that deal with the Chinese
and the killing of the sharks know this isn’t true.
There are two key factors in knowing this, one
being that they have thousands of teeth that are
dull, like velcro only capable of eating small
organisms. Even though the shark has a mouth
over three feet wide, it cannot pass large objects
through its throat. Also, in Africa, whale sharks
are a protected species, but no one knows why
they are disappearing. The population has
declined by more than 50% over the past 15 years.

Whale sharks aren’t as easy to do research on
as you would think. These giant creatures are very
elusive or hard to find and track. With the help of
satellites and laser beams, scientists are better
equipped to uncover the whale sharks’ mysterious
migration pattern. Right now, the scientists are
aiming to track the migration pattern. With this in
hand, they would be able to intercept the whale
sharks as they migrate to get the information they
need.
Also, whale sharks are very big; they have a
big appetite mostly feeding on crabs. These
creatures are one of the biggest in the ocean; you
wouldn’t want to be attacked by one of these.
These whale sharks can live for over 100
years. Also, the whale shark is found in warm
seas about 30 degrees north and south of the
equator. In addition, these animal attacks aren’t as
common as regular sharks, but they do
happen. The most recent attack was on August 8 ,
2014.
Overall, the whale shark is a very interesting
creature.

Summer Fun

Who is ready for summer break? There are
many activities that could fill up
summertime. Some of the free activities include
riding a bike, playing basketball, or going
fishing. People could play baseball, go
swimming, go to a friend’s house and hangout,
going camping, and going to the splash pad.
Also, somebody could do
things that involve
money. People could go to
Cedar Point to ride roller
coasters or go to Soak City. It
costs about $45 to go to Cedar
Point if one goes online to
buy tickets, if people don’t
they cost $65. To cool off, go
Twist and Shout to get ice
cream.
Another activity to do is go to an indoor waterpark
like Kalahari, Great Wolf Lodge, or Maui
Sands. When one goes to a waterpark the price
usually depends on how long they stay. There is
also putt-putt golf, going to Skate World where
they have an arcade, skating, mini golf, going to
the movies, or teenagers could just rent the movie
at home.
We asked the question, “What is your favorite
thing to do in the summertime?” Lauren J. said, “I
like to go riding on my four-wheeler.”
Gavin H. said, “I like to play basketball.”
Isaiah S. stated, “I like to go swimming.”
Hope everyone has some fun in the summer
sun.
Solar Plane Traveled the World

The design of the
plane is fly. This
plane is called the
Solar Impulse. The
plane set eight World
Records on this
adventure. It is now
the only solar plane to fly between two continents
during the night. It traveled from Abu Dhabi to
Hawaii. Now in 2015-2016, the plane is trying to
be the first around the world solar
flight. Although, they had to make many stops on
the way to ensure safety.
The plane is made out of many different
materials. Also, it had many solar panels on the
top of it and on the wings. These can charge four
batteries that charge a 14.4 horsepower
motor. This will cause the plane to travel 28 to 56
miles per hour. There was a control room, and it
was where the pilot seat was located. The cockpit
in it is the size of a coffin. The plane weighs
3,527 pounds. Also, the average altitude is 6,000
feet.
The Solar Impulse 2 is trying to travel the
world. So far, it has traveled 2 continents. The
Solar Impulse 2 can only travel about 50 mph. It
has had to make a few stops due to the batteries
overheating; they had to make an emergency
landing in Asia due to this. It took them 10
months to fix the plane and get it back in the air.

Man Charged in Stabbing

Three people went down at a Foodland in
Maui, Hawaii on Tuesday, April 19 ,
2016. Stephen Schmidt was grocery shopping
when he noticed his estranged, separated, wife
with a man. Schmidt later pulled out a knife,
stabbing three people in the store, including his
wife.
Schmidt became very jealous when he saw his
estranged wife with another man. A source said
she heard the woman and Schmidt arguing. The
cause of them arguing is unknown. Schmidt was
also caught stalking his estranged wife and the
man. A few minutes later, the source heard
screaming coming from one of the aisles in the
store.
First, Schmidt stabbed his separated wife,
Kehau Farias Schmidt, in the throat. Then, he
stabbed a 53-year old man in the lungs for trying
to help Kehau. A 34-year old man was also
stabbed in the lungs because he was trying to stop
Schmidt. Schmidt started to go for a fourth
person, but ran out of the store when he heard the
police sirens.
The man with Kehau was not stabbed or
harmed. All three victims were rushed to Maui
Memorial Medical Center to be
treated. Unfortunately, Kehau did not pull
through, but the two men are in stable
conditions. Not much later after he escaped the
store, Schmidt was found and arrested at a home
in Maui. He is currently being held at the Wailuku
Police Station. He was charged with first-degree
murder and two counts of second-degree
attempted murder. His bail has been set at $3
million.

Global Warming

Many things are causing the rise of the world
and its ocean’s temperatures. Many glaciers are
melting, causing arctic animals to have less room
to live. Also, the ocean’s levels are rising. Storms
and many other
weather events
may become
much more
severe than in
the past. In
addition,
precipitation
has increased
around the whole
world.
Global warming is thought to be caused from
many things. One important idea that people think
has a large effect to global warming is carbon
dioxide emissions from fossil fuel burning power
plants. Also, it is thought to come from carbon
dioxide emissions from burning gasoline for
transportation. Deforestation is thought to release
large amounts of carbon, which is not
good. Livestock is one of the largest sources of
methane gas emissions throughout the world, with
over 28 percent of the world’s total
emissions. Finally, chemicals used in farming can
be causing global warming.
Most of the effects may not happen for many
years, but scientists still want to stop it from ever
happening.
For example, in about 30 years the breeding pairs
of Adelie penguins might go from 32,000 to
11,000. Furthermore, global warming is also
impacting the populations of sea turtles, right
whales, penguins, seals, lobsters, cod, polar bears,
pikas, and waterfowl.
However, some people say there are positive
effects, but the negative effects outweigh
them. One possible positive effect is more usable
land; in Canada there is much land covered by
ice. On the contrary, there would be many cities
that get completely covered by water. In addition,
they believe there would be longer growing

seasons. Lastly, the northwest passage could be
reality.

Helping People with Disabilities

Anyone can make a difference. Pegasus Farm,
a therapeutic equestrian center, located in CantonAkron, Ohio are changing the lives of people with
disabilities. Three Canton schoolteachers who
imagined a place for children and adults with
disabilities founded the farm in 1985. They
wanted them to be able to have the opportunity to
get physical activity. They allow people to ride
the horses, learn more about them, and there are
even summer camps as well.
Children and adults can come to this farm to
ride the horses and interact with them. The farm
has 35 horses in all, and 3 are retired. The
volunteers are challenging the individuals that
come to the farm by letting them learn and grow in
ways that they
can’t in dayto-day
life. Most of
the people that
visit there
have
emotional,
behavioral,
cognitive
development or physical or a combination of
both. Also, more than 200 students a week
participate in their therapeutic program. The
workers try and get everyone that applies in very
quickly, but the average wait is 4 to 6
months. There is also a chance for people to
volunteer as well, they can do office work, special
events, gardening, building and property
maintenance, serving on committees, and working
the pantry.
Executive Director, Carol Lichtenwalter, was
asked a few questions about the farm. Such as,
what were the things that the students enjoyed
most about the farm and how many people
volunteer at the farm.
She responded, “We have many programs, but
the horses would be the most favorite part. The
adults and kids come and are able to take the
horses on trails, tack them, and groom them. They
also learn about controlling the horses; many
progress in independent riders. I think it's the
whole experience of taking care of the horses,
controlling them, and riding them.”
When asked about the volunteers, she
answered, “We have 200 volunteers. They
volunteer in every aspect. We literally could not
run this place without our volunteers.”
Many people are very neighful for this lifechanging farm.
