Lady Anne’s NeedleworK Retreats
Explore your embroidery passion in the company of experts
www.crewelwork.com
Lady Anne’s Needlework Retreats were created by Phillipa Turnbull as a means of sharing her passion for the exquisite and rarely seen embroideries that she has found tucked away in the attics of castles for which they were
made. Phillipa’s enthusiasm for researching, conserving, and sharing her knowledge about these textile treasures,
and her ability to bring together the talented experts that she has been fortunate to work with throughout her career,
have enabled her to develop a series of wonderful experiences that enrich the embroiderer’s soul. Join us in 2015!

Highlands Needlework Tour
When James VI of Scotland left Scotland in 1603, on the death of
Elizabeth I, and became James I of England, amateur and professional
Scottish embroiderers were left with neither a resident King nor Queen to
influence fashion at court. The parliaments of Scotland and England were
eventually united as one Kingdom in 1707 but until this date Scottish
embroidery was far more influenced by its historic ties with France and the
Netherlands than by English fashions. This is why this area is such an
interesting place to explore
for the needlework enthusiast. The castles and country houses
tucked away in the remote Highlands offer a treasure trove of
historic delights rarely seen by the public and which bare little
relevance to the embroideries we are used to seeing further south.
Over the past 20 years Phillipa and Meredith have spent many
hours researching Scottish embroidery, both together and
independently and now they wish to share their experiences
north of the border. They wish to thank each one of you for
joining them on another fabulous needlework journey.
In each of our hotels you will have a double room with dinner and breakfast (other than as stated in the
programme). Additional guests can be added to your booking for a supplement and you may book additional
nights at our first and last stop, the MacDonald Holyrood in Edinburgh, through us for £180 per night. We are
happy to organise a shuttle for you from Edinburgh airport or the train station if you need it.
We aim to provide you with all the equipment you will need to take part in our workshops in order that you do
not have to carry it all the way from home! Therefore, at the welcome meeting in Edinburgh you will be given a
Retreat bag containing the tools that you will need for the week ahead, including embroidery scissors and a
notebook and pencil. Your projects, which you may keep in your Retreat bag, will be given to you during the
first class with each tutor. You may bring your own, or be loaned, a hands-free seat frame for use in each class.
Please bring your own magnifier if you normally use one. We will not be providing lights since we find that
they are rarely used and are a hassle for you to carry around. You will be stitching in a bright room in each
location so you shouldn’t need one, however if you can’t live without one, please do bring your own. A shop
will be open for the duration of the Retreat where you can purchase additional materials such as linen, threads
and wools as well as kits, gifts and embroidery tools.
We are delighted to bring you two brand new designs to work on on your way around Scotland. They have
never been seen before and were created exclusively for you by your tutors Meredith and Phillipa. You will
work sections of each design with your tutors, who will provide you with the skills and materials to then
complete them at home.
Meredith Willett
Meredith is one of the most highly respected embroidery teachers in the United States.
She has trained at the Royal School of Needlework and her award winning embroidery
has reached the cover of Needle Pointers Magazine. She is involved in almost every facet
of the US Needlework Industry as the owner of a needlework empire back in Kentucky.
Her knowledge and skill as a teacher and her energy and humour as a person make
Meredith an extremely popular figure among students and tutors alike. She is the premier
teach of gold work in the United States and we are privileged to call her a permanent
fixture of the Lady Anne’s Needlework Retreats.

Arts the
& Crafts
The Lake
Phillipa has long been interested in the shapes and designs in Elizabethan embroidery. Several years ago, she
noticed that Arts & Crafts design also follows similar design rules to those popular in the Elizabethan era, such
as circular themed, naturalistic fronds of fruit and foliage that create their own pattern within a repeated Rococo
rhythm. This was her inspiration for hosting this first retreat focusing on the Arts & Crafts movement and she
thanks each one of you for joining her on another fabulous journey of artistic discovery.
You will be staying at the Low Wood Bay Hotel on the banks of Lake
Windermere for the duration of your stay. You will have a double room
and your rate includes dinner and breakfast. Additional guests can be
added to your booking for a £70 supplement per night and you may
book additional nights through us or by contacting the hotel directly.
You will have access to the gym, indoor pool, outdoor hot tub, and spa.
The nearest mainland train station is 30 minutes away at Oxenholme
and the easiest airport to fly into is Manchester. We are happy to
organise a shuttle for you from the airport or station if you need it.
We aim to provide you with all the equipment you will need to take part in our workshops in order that you do
not have to carry it all the way from home. Therefore, at the welcome meeting you will be given a Retreat bag
containing the tools that you will need for the week ahead, including embroidery scissors and a notebook and
pencil. Your projects, which you may keep in your Retreat bag, will be given to you during the first class with
each tutor. You may bring your own, or be loaned, a hands-free seat frame for use in each class. Please bring
your own magnifier if you normally use one. We will not be providing lights since we find that they are rarely
used and are a hassle for you to carry around. You will be stitching in a bright room so you shouldn’t need one,
however if you can’t live without one, please do bring your own. A shop will be open for the duration of the
Retreat where you can purchase additional materials such as linen, threads and wools as well as kits, gifts and
embroidery tools.
Your tutors
Jenny Adin-Christie
Jenny is a professional hand embroiderer and designer with an innate passion for
creating individual work and for the study and repair of antique embroideries.
Trained at the Royal School of Needlework, Jenny is now widely recognised in
the fields of whitework, metal thread and stumpwork embroidery. Her latest
commission included work as part of the RSN team, on the wedding dress for
the marriage of Catherine Middleton to Prince William.
Phillipa Turnbull
Phillipa’s passion for crewel work and her talent as a designer and
embroiderer afford her the privilege of researching and recreating some of the
most exquisite historic crewel work in the world. Her ongoing research
among private collections allows her to bring you textile information from the
historic source, including stitches and techniques long forgotten by current
needlework books. One of Phillipa’s greatest passions is sharing her
needlework experiences with others and seeing it elevated as an art-form.
