M M Series PVI/PVIF Standard and Full Port Eccentric Plug Valves Conforming to AWWA C517 Publication 517-105 Issue 11/13 Design Features M Implementations The Eccentric Plug valve is the industry standard for systems that will experience sludge or large particulate flow. VSI Eccentric Plug Valves are able to achieve an extremely high port area while keeping the operating time much lower than the traditional gate valve. Eccentric Movement The most essential function of a valve is that it must isolate line flow. This action is easy to accomplish, but with traditional designs as pressure and size increase the torque required to close the valve increase exponentially. To counteract this characteristic all VSI Eccentric Plug Valves incorporate an offset in the valve design. By offsetting the plug and shaft centerline from the valve body and pipe centerline a cam action is achieved. This action allows the plug to contact the valve body only in the last 5-10 degrees of movement. Through the rest of the valve motion the only torque transmitted to the operator will be from the low friction bearings and line force on the plug. The cam action increases the seat force without increasing operator torque allowing for the use of more durable encapsulation materials that are often harder. Resilient Plug Facing All VSI Eccentric Plug Valves are equipped as standard with a fully encapsulated resilient plug. By fully encapsulating the plug the service life of the valve is greatly extended by reducing corrosion of the plug. The resilient nature of the seat allows for driptight shut off. Should small solids become deposited upon the plug face, tight shut off is still guaranteed. 2 Offset Valve Offset and Integral Stop Integral Stop It is imperative that positive open and close positions be defined for a valve. The logical nature of the valve places the close stop at the high torque seat position. An additional valve open stop is incorporated into VSI Eccentric Plug Valves to indicate the positive open position. This eliminates turning the plug into the wrong valve body side and stops the plug in the ideal position. This ideal position places the plug with the least intrusion into the line flow. Design Features M Secured Shafts All sizes are equipped with shafts that are cast as a single piece with the plug. Positive positioning and indication is guaranteed by zero slip. Bolted Bonnet Solid Seat Weld Corrosion-Resistant Seat A bolted bonnet is standard on all VSI Eccentric Plug Valves. This bolted bonnet allows the valve to be serviced without the need to remove from the pipeline. By removing the bonnet the plug can be extracted and upper and lower bearings and seals replaced if necessary. All VSI AWWA C517 Series Valves are cast with an integral base for the seat. Upon this base a solid welding system is used to apply a hard-facing. These highly corrosion resistant seats are permanent for the life of the valve and never need replacement. Standard material is a 90 percent nickel alloy with stellite and other materials available upon request. Standardized Bonnet Unlike the majority of American valve manufacturers, VSI supplies valves with standardized bonnet mounts unless otherwise specified. The use of International Organization of Standardization (ISO) or Manufacturers Standard Society (MSS) mount dimensions allows for the attachment of standardized gearboxes and operators without the need for specialized adapters. Eliminating these adapters often reduces cost, minimizes overall dimensions of the valve package, and reduces weight. Should there be a need to exchange or retrofit a newer operator this standardization expands options while reducing cost. The additional use of standardized stem diameters and key widths allows the direct mounting of many commercially available operators without any drive bush machining or adapter fabrication. This combined with industry standard stack heights allows for the use of off-the-shelf packing. The packing gland and retention design further allows for the replacement of the packing without removing the valve from the line. In some cases the line pressure can be maintained. All service can be performed without any special training.
