First Foundation in Watertown
The Sisters of St. Joseph began in
LePuy, France, in 1650 under the
direction and guidance of a Jesuit
priest, Jean Pierre Medaille. Father
Medaille envisioned a new way of life
rooted in the perfect love of God
and service to the neighbor through
the practice of the Spiritual and
Corporal Works of Mercy. Sisters
brought the charism of Fr. Medaille
to Watertown and to the Diocese of
Ogdensburg in 1880. Presently they
serve God and the dear neighbor in
the North Country through ministries
in administration, education, music,
pastoral care, campus ministry, social
work, prison ministry, healthcare,
and most importantly, prayer.
