Summer Achievement Camp 2015
Summer 2015 Summer Achievement Camp 2015 Our Summer Achievement Camp was a great success this year as we spent the month of July learning, playing, and exploring! We were very happy to see new and familiar faces join Corazón a Corazón this summer as we continue to grow and advance our programming. Summer Achievement Camp 2015, although turbulent in the beginning days, was one of the best summers we have experienced at Corazón. Instead of instructing children in the normal “teach toward the test” manner, more emphasis was placed on analytical and cognitive ability. Problem solving, and everyday applications of math and science took precedent over book work. Social Studies and current events were merged as one, and students normally used to raising their hands to speak and ask questions were encouraged to speak freely among their peers and in their classrooms. great impact on developing our youth into independent thinkers. All of this was possible when dealing with small groups at a time. As the Summer Achievement Camp 2015 came to a close, it was clear that this “fresh” approach had a This summer was one to truly remember! “I look forward to working with all the students again next year!”, says Charles Kyle, Education Coordinator. Recently, Margarita along with Mayra Pimentel, our Administrative Assistant, have been offering an ESL art class as another form of teaching new skills to ESL students. The students are overjoyed to learn new ways in which to express themselves and find it therapeutic to work on each new project. Many students are excited to join us again this Fall for another round of ESL art classes! Meet some of our tutors: Erin Murphy Erin is an outstanding ESL tutor here at Corazón a Corazón. She came to us because she wanted to challenge her professional skills by encouraging those of others. “The most effective lessons I created were a result of learning as much as possible about my students.”, says Erin. She is TEFL certified and holds a paraprofessional teaching license. Her students hit their stride when they were able to empathetically connect and experiment with different activities until they found the ones that clicked. Erin is now teaching English in Chiayi City, Taiwan. She still keeps in touch with her students through emails and Skype ESL lessons (regardless of the time zone difference!). Carole Shegog Carole’s lifetime commitment in teaching, and working in social service with many different minority populations is invaluable to Corazón a Corazón. She currently demonstrates this commitment to her students’ mastery of the English language when volunteering to tutor within our program. Carole is diligent in her devel- After School, ESL and Summer Achievement Camp Tutors Page 2 Meet one of our ESL students: Roberto Medina Roberto is a dedicated ESL student here at Corazón a Corazón. He has been taking ESL class for a year now and has shown amazing improvement! Roberto used little to no English when he started taking classes. Now, he is able to greet and say goodbye to everyone and even hold short conversations in English. We are beyond proud of Roberto! (Summer Achievement Camp 2015 students and tutors) Our Volunteers Corazón a Corazón would like to say “THANK YOU!” to all of our amazing volunteers. We strongly appreciate their support and dedication toward our programming. Our volunteer based programs thrive with the help of kind and committed individuals who are a gift to the South Chicago Community residents. If you are interested in volunteering with us, please let us know! opment of a rapport with her students to foster a safe and honest environment and, through these relationships, she is able to learn students’ needs and work with them to solve problems. This diligence is key because, for Carole, the focal point of her work with our students is their ability to be able to take part in necessary life situations. For our students, Carole’s English language instruction thereby unlocks the door to everyday American commerce.
