Gucci artistic director Frida
Giannini is no stranger
to a YSL reference. She
beautifully mined the
whole ‘70s archive. She
started with the late French
designer’s inspiration from
North Africa and its tribal
and safari influences and
finished with the master’s
color blocking. To complete
the power glamour look, she
also turned to Guy Bourdin
and David Bailey’s photo
documention of the
disco-tastic jet set era.

Forget Miss Middleton and her pencil
skirts and prim fascinators. Royalists
may be gaga for the new princess, but
in New York, Anglomania’s taking an
edgier turn. At Seven, Manhattanites

“Yakuza Serpent” line, while at Jeffrey,
trendsetters are mad for the cool young
designer’s bold neon lace looks.

SHE has been a one-woman
empire for well over 30 years,
proficient in the worlds of art,
interior design, publishing, beauty,
high fashion and business. She was
the first female fashion designer
to become a multi-platform brand,
long before the phrase “multiplatform brand” was part of the
vernacular. Last March, she was
elected to her third term as the
president of the CFDA, and has
established the 2-year-old “DVF

female activists and humanitarians.
“I was very . . . I’m not going

Advanced she remains: von
Furstenberg has recently launched a well-received home line with
a new boutique opening on Wooster Street at the end of May, has
just been honored with the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Medal for
championing the High Line, and spoke earlier this month at Harvard
Business School. So does it annoy her a little that she’s most lauded
for her wrap dress? She is asked about it in every interview: How she
came up with such an elegant solution, why the wrap has had such

omance,
eccentricity and
expert tailoring
paired with a dark
whimsical streak.
Such is the
legacy of Alexander McQueen, the
late enfant terrible of British fashion.
A year after the designer’s tragic
death, he was feted by international
fashion royalty at Monday’s Costume
Institute Gala at the Met, which
marked the launch of the museum’s
exhibition, Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty.
Long drawn to the colorful melodramas of European history, McQueen
would have been exalted to see the
future queen of England, Kate Middleton, wear a showstopping lace and
satin McQueen gown as she walked
down the aisle at Westminster Abbey.
With his collection now under the
creative direction of Sarah Burton, his
brand of dramatic escapism lives on.
And who better to model Burton’s
first collection for Alexander McQueen
than actress Lotte Verbeek, the ethereal
Dutch beauty who stars opposite Jeremy Irons in Showtime’s popular new
period drama “The Borgias.”
With her porcelain skin and icy gray
eyes, the 28-year-old muse-in-themaking transitions from her on-set
wardrobe of corsets to this season’s
deft eveningwear with grace. Playing
Giulia Farnese, the real-life mistress
of Pope Alexander VI, Verbeek is
stunned to find herself suddenly
catapulted to fame. “It’s quite impressive to see all the posters in Times
Square and on the subway,” Verbeek
says. Fans of “The Tudors,” however
should be warned — “The Borgias”
isn’t your typical bodice ripper. “It’s
even darker and a bit more obscure,”
says Verbeek with a hint of mischief.
A woman after McQueen’s heart.
