Summer 2016 - St. Mary Parish Library
Alex P. Allain-Franklin Amelia Bayou Vista BerwickCentervillePattersonWest End-Baldwin St. Mary Parish Library Newsletter Visit our website at stmarylibrary.org Summer 2016 2016 Summer Reading Program Kicks Off! It’s time again for everyone to come and hang with us for our summer reading program. Research has shown that children who participate in the summer reading programs maintain their reading skills better than children who do not read during times when school is not in session. The library is trying to encourage and get refocused on summer READING. The library offers a reading program with weekly activities designed to encourage reading in a fun, non-academic manner. REGISTRATION Early registration will begin in May and continue throughout the summer. This will also give you an opportunity to make sure you have a library card and your record is up to date. Remember registration is allowed at only one branch, but you are welcome to attend all programs, activities, and special performers at ANY of the seven branches of the St. Mary Parish Library System. KICK-OFF DAY Our kick off day will be held on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. We invite you to join us and get registered if you haven’t, since this will be the first day to check out books that will count towards summer reading minutes. As mentioned above, our goal is to increase reading. Therefore, we are doing things as we did last year, since it turned out successfully. Readers will need to turn in at least the minimum 600 minutes or more. (That’s just 20 minutes of reading per day.) We encourage higher goals, set by you, to place as a reading winner. For our finale, we will be hosting a “Pizza Extravaganza,” featuring final awards, prizes, treats and games. No one will be allowed to attend without an invitation. The ONLY way to obtain an invitation is to READ and turn in, at least the minimum minutes of 600. Race in and check out the stories, crafts, music, dance, and other activities being held at the libraries located in Amelia, Baldwin, Bayou Vista, Berwick, Centerville, Franklin and Patterson. Performances this summer will include Queen Nur, Farmer Jason, Matthew Noel, Allan Wolf, Harvey Rabbit, Christine Audler, The Kinders, Page Turner Adventures, Didgeridoo Down Under and Lady Chops.
