ast year was one of great accomplishments for the Michiana BMW CCA
Chapter thanks to our sponsors and the
hard work of our chapter’s volunteers and
board members.
Due to the support of all of our advertisers, and the work our new editor, Brad
Pines, we successfully transitioned the
BimmerBulletin from a four page blackand-white publication to first, eight pages
in full color, to the expanded 12 page
editon you’re reading now.
Please give your support to all of our
newsletter advertisers and please be sure
to let them know that you’re doing so
because they support the Michiana
Chapter of the BMW CCA.
I would especially like to thank and
recognize Sharp BMW in Grand Rapids for
helping to sponsor our Fall Color Tour by
paying a large portion of the cost of the
participants’ meal at the Gull Lake Country
Club at the conclusion of the event.
Harold Ziegler BMW in Kalamazoo also
sponsored the registration at their dealership. The Fall Color Tour was a great
success despite the rainy conditions.
We have launched monthly Get Together
meetings held at different venues across
Michigan and in Indiana. Last year we
hosted a season of five Autocross competitions at the Tire Rack in South Bend and
enjoyed some great driving tours like the
Spring Dust Off and the Michigan International Speedway touring laps during the
Summer Drive & Dine.
We all hope that the Michiana Chapter is
meeting your expectations as a BMW CCA
member and welcome feedback to ensure
we’re offering the type of events you’d like
to attend. Our goal is to engage all our
members, young and old, from hardcore
gearheads to those wishing simply to
socialize together. We’ll be looking to see
you at a chapter event, or all of them, later
this year.
On the BMWNUT home front I experienced
the joy of replacing another e36 clutch,
this time with my 22-year-old daughter
Kirsti. She showed me that she’s not afraid
to get her hands dirty working on her car
with Dad.
Kirsti’s 1997 328i was running great with
230k miles on it when she purchased it in
2012 and we expected no trouble with the
clutch as it had been replaced in 2010. I
was very surprised to find out that she was
experiencing a slipping clutch.

father and daughter team replaced the clutch in her 1997 328i. (Brad Pines)
The Color Tour was wonderful, despite
the rainy skies. (Harvey Nuttall)
As it turned out the clutch was slipping
and ruined due to oil contamination. This
was quite a large project and involved
removing the exhaust system, drive shaft
and gearbox.
I must admit that when I learned I
would need to replace the rear main
seal, between the engine and the gearbox, I
had expectations of a complex procedure
that was going to test my best home garage
mechanic’s skills. I was pleasantly surprised
to find out that not only was the seal only a
mere $19, but the work involved was
really elementary.
We carefully dug the old seal out of the
back end of the engine without marring
the sealing surfaces and then gently tapped
the new seal into place using a smooth flat
item.
Kirsti gained a working knowledge of the
internal workings of her car and an appreciation for what happens when you let that
clutch out and step on the gas. While we
were under the car, we also replaced the
two rear wheel bearings, and the handbrake shoes, no small feat. We faced some
mechanical challenges there too but none
too difficult to us overcome together.
As a Dad, I have now had the pleasure of
replacing a clutch with both of my
children on their BMWs. If you get the
chance to do repairs together, I highly
recommend it. It’s a great bonding experience, but it’s not for everyone. The addition of a black 1999 M3 to our BMW fleet
should make the 2013 season
both fun and interesting.
The e36 M3 is a car I have wanted to
own since they first were launched in 1995.
I am sure we will have some stories to tell
as the year unfolds. It’s sure to be a great
driving season for Michiana members.

Helpful hints for new racers
By Brad Pines

Walking is good for you.
Walk the course as often as possible to
learn the best line through the cones. Try
to look far ahead to build good “eye
habits.” Our experienced drivers will be
very happy to walk with you and help.
Restrain yourself.
Move the seat back with the seatbelt on,
then give the chest belt an abrupt tug,
locking it. Lean forward to keep it locked
and then move the seat forward.
Mom was right, sit up straight.
Be sure that your seat is more upright than
in normal street driving. To check your
position, extend your wrists. They should
touch the top of the wheel. Hands belong
at nine and three for best control.

Lose a few pounds.
Remove all loose interior items, including
the floor mats, for safety. Then empty the
trunk and remove the jack and spare tire.
Add a few pounds.
Check your driver’s door jam for cold tire
inflation pressure, then add about five
pounds to each tire to firm up the sidewalls and improve handling.
I can see clearly now.
Turn your center interior rearview mirror
sideways to improve forward visibility.
Remember, just as in the movie, “Gumball
Rally,” what’s behind you (while autocrossing) is not important.
Look where you’re going.
The car always goes where the eyes go.
Don’t look at things you don’t want to hit,
like cones. Look next to them, and look as
far ahead along your path, as possible.
Always plan for the next corner, don’t
react to the one right in front of your car.
Keep your eyes up.
Go like heck, stop like heck.
There’s no coasting in autocross. Don’t
depress the clutch when you apply the

brakes. Either be rolling on the gas, or
squeezing the brakes, hard. When braking,
make sure the wheels are straight and
squeeze the brakes very, very hard at first,
then melt off quickly before turning. When
you move to the gas, don’t just stomp the
throttle, roll on quickly but smoothly.
Think of each pedal more like a dimmer
switch than an on/off switch.
Do your homework.

My first time at a
BMW CCA driving school
or your first driving school I highly
recommend finding someone that has
done this before and asking if you can go
with them – even if you don’t know them
yet.
They can give advice, answer questions,
lend a hand, and just be a familiar friendly
face in an unfamiliar place. If you don’t
know any of our chaper’s local track rats,
get in touch with any board member and
they will connect you together.
You’ll find they are a fantastic group of
warm and welcoming people. The Michiana Chapter has several experienced
driving school instructors.
That’s how I ended up sitting on the grid
ready to drive the Mid-Ohio Sports Car
Course in May of 2010 for my first real
track driving school.
Drive your everyday car
I wasn’t driving a highly-modified
M-car. I was in my daily driver, a familyfriendly four door sedan, an e46 330i with
over 100k miles, an automatic and everyday tires.
It doesn’t matter what type of car you
have as long as it is safe. Just get out there
and drive it – don’t let that hold you back.
Don’t worry if your car is not perfect or
you don’t think it is very fast.
Trust me when I say your car is faster
than you are, so don’t go buy a bunch of
upgrades or go fast parts for your car
before your first school.
Don’t worry about hurting your car
either. As long as you listen to the
instructors, you will not hurt your car. As a
first timer you simply will not be going fast
enough to put any measurable wear on
your car, engine, or tires.
Don’t get me wrong – you’ll be going
faster than you have before, but as you’ll
soon find out there is lots of room to
improve as a driver.
How it felt
I was excited, nervous, and really happy
to finally be getting to try this. I ended up
having a great time. I passed some cars on
track, which is amazingly and inexplicably
fun.
I also got passed by plenty of other cars,
and that was motivation for me to pay attention, listen to my in-car instructor, and
learn so I could go faster.
If I had to sum the weekend up it would
be “I just had lots of fun!” Thanks to
Michiana track drivers Eve and Al for
letting me tag along with you guys for my
first school.
What to expect
Here is what you can expect at your first
BMW CCA driving school. There may
be a social gathering at the track or nearby
on Friday night. This is optional, but go if
you can and meet some new people. I’ve
always had a good time, just make sure
you don’t have too good of a time as
you’ll be up early on Saturday and you’ll
need your wits about you. If you can,
register Friday night and that will save you
time early the next day.
Saturday morning you’ll want to find a
parking spot at the track. I always try to
park next to my friends.
You’ll want to unpack your car, pick up
your packet from registration, and attend
the driver’s meeting.
You absolutely need to attend the
mandatory drivers meeting. Stop whatever
you are doing in the paddock and go when
they call the meeting. It’s informal and
relatively short, but if you don’t attend you
don’t get to go on track.
This is when they’ll expain the rules of
the road, and give you vital safety information and go over the event’s schedule.
After the drivers’ meeting there are
usually some reconnaissance laps before
the school starts. These are rides in other
people’s cars at low speed with an instructor who will be helping to familiarize you
with the track layout and corner worker
stations. Take a couple of different rides if
time and space permits to get as familiar
with the track as possible.
In the classroom
Next you will head to class for your first
session in there. Track layout will be covered as well as areas to be cautious, corner
workers’ flags and their meanings, passing

zones, some basic driving rules.
You will be put in a novice group with
other people of similar skill. There will be
many others who are there for the first
time. Don’t be intimidated, the people in
your group will have similar questions and
experience, if you want to know something, ask it.
Passing only by permission
Throughout the weekend, anytime you
are on track there is controlled passing.
That means that you will need to give
permission, called giving a point, to allow
another driver to pass you safely. This can
only be done in certain safe straight zones
on the track. The controlled passing helps
keep everyone safe.
You won’t have to worry about being
intimidated on track by cars zooming all
around you and being caught off guard,
your instructor will help you to manage the
traffic. You’ll almost always have
the same instructor all weekend so take
the opportunity to get to know your instructor. He or she will be in your car
every session that you that are on track.
If you are feeling up for it, go for a ride
with your instructor – you’ll be amazed at
how fast they go and how smoothly they
drive. A ride with an instructor also helps
you see the track at speed when you
aren’t distracted by having to drive. You
can pay attention to other things like car
placement and the line being used as well
as your instructor’s driving technique.
Finally driving on track
I wasn’t sure what to expect my first
session on track and I had never been to
Mid-Ohio before. I lined up at the back of
the grid so I could get comfortable and
acclimated and learn the track and what
Craig Sisk attended his first driving school in his daily driver, a family-friendly e46 330i automatic 4-door sedan. He now
regularly drives his 1999 M3 at driving schools, track events and autocrosses. (Brad Pines)
turn was coming next, without having to
worry about holding other people up. By
the middle or end of the session I was up
to speed and not a hindrance to my fellow
evaluation. If you don’t get to solo it’s not a
bad thing, use the time with the
instructor to learn what you can.
This last session on Sunday is the most
students.
Each day of the weekend usually
consists of three on-track sessions that are
roughly a half-hour long and the classroom sessions that are also thirty minutes.
There are lots of breaks, so take time to
catch your breath, walk around, enjoy the
atmosphere, meet new people, and see lots
of interesting cars – just make sure
you are on time for your next session.
There are usually touring laps at lunch
time where you can go out on track without an instructor and slowly drive around
the track. If there is a speed limit be sure
to follow it. Every time you see the track
will help you find your way around.
Practice what you have been doing
during your on track sessions at this lower
speed. It will help you in your next session
on track. I still take advantage of this every
time it is available even if I have been to
the track previously – it is a tremendous
aid in making improvements.
Saturday night there is usually
some sort of social get together either at
the track or nearby, again I’d urge you to
go and make some new friends and have
some good conversations.
Flying solo
You may get to run solo for the last
session of the day depending on the group
running the school and your instructor’s
dangerous session of the weekend because
you have the most confidence that you’ve
had all weekend, but you are also the most
tired – as are the other drivers – so do the
smart thing and dial it back a little to stay
within your limits.
After your last session your instructor
will discuss the evaluation with you with
feedback on what areas you are doing well
and where you can improve the most.
This is great information, pay attention
and ask questions if you have any. After
that it will be time to pack up and get
ready to head home from one of the most
fun but tiring weekends you’ve had in a
long time. You will be tired, so be careful
and drive home safely.
Fast forward
Fast forward another 16 months and I’m
sitting on the grid at Mid-Ohio again. Now
I’ve got my second black-on-black manual
e36 M3. This one came with an aftermarket suspension, intake, exhaust, and some
bigger wheels and sticky tires.
By now, I’ve been to half a dozen or so
track schools, and a couple open track
days. While I’m not one of the really fast
guys yet - I’m no longer beginner slow.
I’ve progressed from the novice group
up two run groups and will be running
with the Intermediate/Experienced group
at the start of the 2013 season.

The tires that came on the car still have
a little life left in them and they were half
used when I bought the car. This just goes
to show that you will not be killing
your tires with one weekend at the track.
I’ve gone through a few sets of brake pads,
I find they are lasting about 2-3 track
weekends per set.
Invest in the driver
I’ve got several small modifications I’d
like to make to my car this year, but the
biggest modification I’m going to make
this season are to the loose nut behind the
wheel – the driver.
I’m going to continue attending driving
schools and learning as much as I can. My
car is still much faster than I am able to
make it go. I’m going to have a lot of fun
with it this year learning how to drive as
smoothly, safely and fast as it can go.
You don’t need a lifelong love of cars or
speed to come to the track. You don’t need
autocross experience or a Skip Barber
school. You don’t need a fancy M car. All
you need to have is an open mind and to
listen to what the instructors tell you.
Stop procrastinating, get out there, and
have some fun - my only regret is that I
waited so long to start having this much
fun!

Non-member revenue was about 8%, well under the 15% limit for
non-profits.
Autocross Competition Program:
Net income from Autocross was $753 after subtracting another year
of depreciation, $430, on the timing equipment. Last year Autocross
earned $383 after depreciation.
Membership income:
Membership dues were within 1% of 2011, at $7,454.
BimmerBulletin:
Newsletter costs were $2,769, 11% less than 2011 and $331 under
budget due to volunteer editing and design, plus advertising income
of $810 and lower printing costs.
Event Costs:
Events were $1,355 under budget for the year. Sharpe BMW in
Grand Rapids sponsored the Fall Color Tour with $500. The Spring
Dust Off tour cost $18, much lower than our budget of $250. The
Holiday Party cost $1,022 vs a budget of $1,600. excluding door prizes.
Chapter Shirts and Stickers:
We spent $1,012 on shirts and stickers and sold $453 so far.
Door Prizes
We spent $223 more than our $750 budget due to the small toy cars
that were purchased for Holiday Party participants.
