The Lady in Gold: A Facilitated
Books & Bites Discussion
We’ll discuss Washington Post reporter AnneMarie O’Connor work about Gustav Klimt’s
literally dazzling painting of Adele BlochBauer, a Jewish socialite in Vienna at the
turn of the 20th century. The book paints a
fascinating and detailed picture of fin-de siècle
Vienna and Klimt’s evolution as a painter;
the growing horror and power of the Nazis as
they steal precious art and other valuables
from wealthy Jewish families; and after the
war, the surviving family’s attempt, led by
Adele’s husband’s niece, Maria Altmann, to
reclaim their stolen art treasures, even as the
Austrians deny their complicity.
We’ll conclude our session with a Wiener
Melange (crème-topped Viennese coffee)
and apfelstrudel. (A summary of the book
will also be available upon request.)

Join us for a private, docent-led tour of this
intimate exhibition devoted to the close
relationship that existed between the artist
and his closest subject. Included will be a
display of Adele Bloch-Bauer paintings,
related drawings, and decorative arts. Trained
in the traditional and historicist style, Klimt
emerged as one of Vienna’s preeminent
modern artists. The highlight of this display is
Klimpt’s stunning 1907 “golden style” portrait
of Adele Bloch-Bauer, as well as the sketches
he prepared during the four years of working
on his iconic masterpiece. Lunch and
afternoon on your own.

»» Discovering the Impressionists:
Paul Durand-Ruel and the
New Painting at Philadelphia
Museum of Art
A private, docent-led tour of the acclaimed
exhibition, at the only U.S. location.
Despite the popularity of Impressionism today,
the groundbreaking shifts that occurred in
French painting at the end of the nineteenth
century were not immediately embraced by
collectors, dealers, or the public. A vital figure
in the rise of Impressionism is Paul DurandRuel (1831–1922), a practical, ambitious, and
visionary Parisian art dealer who enthusiastically
championed the new style of painting.
Discovering the Impressionists examines the
critical years from 1865 to 1905 when DurandRuel both inspired and sustained artists like
Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Édouard
Manet, Camille Pissarro, and Edgar Degas.
