So that the giant can do justice to its reputation, there is also a matching set of seven different freight cars. Club members were welcomed with an exhibition memento (see below) and the anniversary showcase (above right), and 20-year members were also greeted with a glass of prosecco to celebrate. 4 Exhibition trends Intermodellbau Dortmund Powerful models impress Superb new models, fine layouts and almost innumerable model railroaders: once again, the Märklin stand at the Intermodellbau 2013 in Dortmund was the number one attraction for a great number of the 88,000 visitors. No wonder: according to visitor surveys, the model railroad has proven to be the very top favorite with the public – and Märklin stands for the model railroad. The Club team welcomed the Club members personally, and as an exhibition memento, they were presented with a sporty cap bearing the Märklin Insider legend. Members with 20 complete years behind them also received a prosecco with “anniversary label”. Drawing Freisteller! attention to the 20th anni- versary was a showcase with some particularly outstanding Club models such as the “Big Boy” or the “Senator”. Many children with their parents, school classes and young people were fascinated by the large Märklin H0 layout and took home information on the wide Märklin my world product range. “The play area at the stand was well attended and many of the parents with their children stayed for half an hour and more”, said EricMichael Peschel, Event Marketing Manager, Märklin. “Children are becoming more interested in model railroads again”. This is helped by world records: On the Märklin stand, everyone was admiring the 15-mm (5/8") high Z-scale Christmas tree – the tiniest exhibit of all – presented by Trainini editor Holger Späing of the Dortmund Insider Round Table. Photos: Intermodellbau, Kötzle, PW Detail Märklin-Insider 03 / 2013 News & Facts DVD of the year part 1 Visible pleasure Twenty years of the Insider Club, product highlights and model railroad trends: the first part of the DVD of the Year 2013 “A year with Märklin” once again gives you visual delights and top information from the Club, the world of model railroads and prototypes. Waiting for Club members are reports on the “Crocodile” in Erstfeld (Ce 6/8 II 14270) and on Märklin’s current H0 models. Layout enthusiasts can look forward to two reports: the Lippstadt Railroad enthusiasts show off their magnificent club layout, and the Aviation Museum in San Francisco shows us its historic 0-gauge layout. Naturally there are tips included too on the annual DVD part 1. The DVD also has a film report on weathering a V 100 model, which is richly illustrated with running scenes. Clearly there’s plenty about the Club too – after all, it is celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2013. Two of the Club’s founder members play host to the film team, there are excerpts from the first Club film of all, and two exclusive special models find themselves in front of the lens: the huge H0 class 53.0 steam loco as an anniversary model, and the attractive class 05, which is reserved for all those who have been Club members for 20 years continuously. The annual chronicle DVD part 1 is sent out with this mailing. A cover to match the DVD is available for downloading in the Club area under club.maerklin.de. Model or prototype? The feature on the two “Crocodiles” on part 1 of the annual DVD makes things clear. Trips canceled The planned Märklin trips in 2013 to Scandinavia to the ore railroad and to Bochum to the musical “Starlight Express” have unfortunately had to be canceled. The cancellations were due to insufficient registrations, so that minimum participant numbers could not be reached. We wish to thank all Club members for their interest and apologize for having to take this step. Nevertheless, those who would like to enjoy “Starlight Express” still have an advantage: Club members receive a reduction of 10 percent on the net prices of admission tickets by quoting PIN 123953 when they make a reservation. The proper way to arrive at the 30th International Model Railway Exhibition (September 13 to 15, 2013) in Göppingen: on September 15th, a V 200-powered special train will leave Augsburg main station for Göppingen between 7:00 and 7:30, arriving back in Augsburg at about 19:30. The price is 29.50 euro. Exclusively for Insiders: the class 45 freight train locomotive as a once-only series Simply the strongest of all With an output of 3,020 HP, the machines of class 45 put all the others in the shade: they were the most powerful German steam locos. Exclusively for Insiders, Märklin is now producing 45 010 with new design high-performance boiler as running in about 1965 as a once-only series, and a set of freight cars typical of the times. “As the most powerful of all German steam locos, the class 45 is an outstanding landmark in railroad history”, says Karl-Heinz Grässle, Märklin’s Product Manager, of the selection of 45 010 as a second Insider model in 2013. “In addition, the 45 is represented as the DB version with new boiler in the Märklin range for the first time”. And another thing: homage is paid to a unique item. “Of the entire class, only 45 010, in the DB museum in Nuremberg, survived”. And that was close: in October 6 2005, the preserved loco was seriously damaged by fire, but due to her historical significance, 45 010 underwent the necessary repairs, which were successfully completed in 2012. The class with its three sets of valve gear was developed in the Henschel works in Kassel. In the 1930s, freight train loads were increasing enormously and there was an urgent need for fast, powerful steam locomotives for express parcels and freight traffic. “So when the Locomotive Committee met in Wernigerode Detail Märklin-Insider 03 / 2013 Models Notes on ordering The H0 class 45 freight train tender locomotive (item 37455) and the matching seven-piece freight car set (item 46081) will be produced in 2013 in a once-only series exclusively for Insiders. Each Club member can order one example of each of the exclusive models from his Märklin MHI dealer with the enclosed order form. We expressly draw your attention to the fact that these order forms are not transferable. Closing date for orders is July 31, 2013. Deliveries are scheduled to commence from quarter 4, 2013. At the end of the year, a personalized certificate of authenticity will be sent direct to all those ordering the model. . Last of the class: unlike the preserved locomotive, the model of 45 010 has triple headlights, as Märklin has produced the heavy freight train steam loco in its running condition in around 1965. from May 23 to 25, 1934, there were discussions about a ten-coupled freight train locomotive with a top speed of 90 km/h (56 mph), and these were to culminate in the design of the class 45”, recounts Dr. Andreas Räntzsch, Documentarist at Märklin. Between 1936 and 1940, Henschel built 28 class 45 locomotives. With a length of 25.64 m (84'1-1/2") over buffers, the locos didn’t merely look mighty: their evaporation surface (310 m² - 3,336 ft²) was far larger than that of the “Jumbo” class 44 (238 m2 - 2,560 ft²) and the classic standard class 50 (177 m2 - 1,905 ft²). The German Federal Railroad took over 27 locos of this class which were admittedly suffering massive boiler problems caused by metal fatigue. As a result, from 1950, ten machines – including 45 010 – were modified with fireboxes or new boilers with combustion chambers and mechanical stokers. Trials demonstrated the new boilers fitted to the class 45 could produce an almost incredible 22 tonnes of steam per hour, and that at a speed of 60 km/h (37 mph) they produced an output of over 3,000 HP. As railroad historian Dr. Andreas Räntzsch continues, the post-war history of the 45s was anything but standard: “There was some demand for brake locomotives, and some for a powerful freight train locomotive. Thus some class 45s were put into service from Würzburg depot – the rebuilt 45s were those regularly used. Their time at Würzburg ended with the winter schedules 1955/56. Then the Bundesbahn Zentralamt (central office) in Minden moved in on the rebuilt locos”. The BZA needed braking locos for testing new machines, “Since previously the testing station had only had class 45 locos in their original condition”. As last of the giants, the 45 010 was retired in November 1968, and now she appears as a further 2013 Club model and Insiders can put her in steam – she has after all a smoke generator kit. The model with the 2’3 T38 tender is Karl-Heinz Grässle, Product Manager Märklin: “The class 45 is a milestone in railroad history”. 7 r Closing date fo orders: July 31, 2013 Märklin-Insider 03 / 2013 37455 Heavy freight train steam locomotive with tender !)cehHU3 Prototype: German Federal Railroad (DB) class 45 heavy freight train steam loco. Central Station 60212 fundamentally different from earlier models like the Bellingrodt edition 45 004 (item 37452). “The boiler, in die cast metal, is a complete new tooling – that’s easy to see from the altered dome arrangement, pipework and the new smokebox door”, says Product Manager Karl-Heinz Grässle enumerating the points. Instead of four domes like the old boiler, 45 010 has only three: in front of the steam dome are the two sand domes each of which has two delicately worked fall-pipes leading to the axles – just one example of the finely-crafted detailing. “The decking matches the boiler, the feed-pump and air-pump are both new, the cylinders have been reworked and authentic Witte smoke deflectors and DB reflex glass lamps are fitted”, says the H0 Product Manager pointing out further details worthy of note (see product profile on the left). The functions for operation are absolutely modern. The loco can be uncoupled by remote control thanks to the Telex coupling on the rear of the tender. Lighting functions like the flickering light in the firebox and the digitally-controlled engineer’s cab lighting and the wide range of sound effects lend lots of atmosphere. For this steam loco bursting with power, Märklin has produced – also exclusively for the Club – a seven-piece freight car set with a freight train baggage car, a loaded stake car, a banana refrigerator car, a boxcar of the popular G10 type, a pressurized gas tank car owned by VTG, a further silo car and boxcar. The assembly is not accidental, and that is something by which Karl-Heinz Grässle sets great store: “We took our inspiration for the selection from photographs of typical freight trains taken in around 1965”. And so the biggest German steam loco will soon be taking to the rails once more, with a freight train just like Carl Bellingrodt used to photograph. Text: R. Rademacher/Photos: Märklin, H. The green low side car with two trucks bears the Märklin Kids Club logo, for the first time in the Looney-Tunes series, and is loaded with a classic US school bus. “The bus on the model attracts children, with their enthusiasm for cars and in addition it makes the freight car more fun to play with” says the project manager, describing the combination as an ideal gift for children. The bus, made of metal, advertises itself with sign writing on the back as a vehicle of the “Looney Tunes Summer Camp”, printed by Märklin with comic figures and colorful hibiscus blossoms. What is your enthusiasm based on? Angelika Exner: Well, that’s not entirely true. We were both of us more or less ’infected’ as children. My grandfather was a railroad man, working in the repair shops in Opladen. He gave my brothers a Märklin railroad with which I also played as a child. We set up a small permanent layout in the cellar. When he was a kid, my husband came to model railroads via his father and brother, though admittedly they were Fleischmann fans. Around Christmas, they used to set up a small layout which had to be taken down again at Easter at the latest. Club News: In the intervening years, model railroads were displaced by other interests. How did the renaissance come about? Angelika Exner: Well, I was looking for a suitable wedding present for my fiancée, and the thought occurred to me that we might combine the start of a new chapter of our lives with the start of a mutual hobby. One day I carefully steered the conversation to find out whether there was a chance of rekindling the model railroad interest. My research gave me the courage to go to the retailers and have a look at the current catalogs and starter sets. But that still left the question of which system it should be: DC or AC? We did after all come from different camps. So for the wedding, there was no starter set; only catalogs and a home-made railroad of sugar. Club News: And die reaction? Angelika Exner: I delayed present-giving until we reached our honeymoon destination. The family was in on the secret and gave us a few very well-wrapped packages to take with us, and I was already reading question marks in my husband’s face. Then when I let the secret out in our holiday cottage in Belgium, my husband was totally stunned. We pored over the catalogs on honeymoon. It was very soon obvious that we would decide to go with the Märklin digital system. And since we couldn’t even wait until the holiday was over, we Among those with similar interests: for Angelika and Karsten Exner (first row), exchanges with other Club members on the trip was „a super enrichment of the model railroader landscape“. 15 Scene Märklin-Insider 03/ 2013 Portrait looked right there and then for a toyshop which also offered model railroads. Club News: New start with Märklin? Angelika Exner: Yes, we bought our first Märklin Delta starter set, item No. 29177. Our first loco, the little blue class 34 steam loco, is in fact a Belgian – and she covered a fair distance in the holiday cottage. When we were back home, we positively fell on the large digital starter set 29845 with passenger and freight train and digital control center 6021. I had no idea at that time just what I had started. A spirit of anticipation: Off we go with the Club and the Rhaetian Railway. On the Club trip, the Exners valued above all the chance to chat with the other model railroaders. Club News: Mr. Exner, how do you actually indulge in your joint hobby? Do you collect? Do you have a layout? Karsten Exner: We devote time to it; yes and no; yes and no. But we’ll take everything in order. We have already spent a whole lot of time with our hobby, whether buying in shops and at flea markets, modifying to digital or in building the layout itself. You can’t help collecting – you do it automatically – I favor tank cars, Angelika reefer cars. And the cars are naturally used on the layout too and don’t while away a sad existence in showcases. Club News: You were on the Club trip to Switzerland in 2012. What fascinated you most? Karsten Exner: Above all the fantastic landscape in which the Rhaetian Railway has managed to bed its track alignments. Mountains alternate with deep ravines spanned by some impressive viaducts. I only have to think of the Wiesner Viaduct, where we were able to detrain and then photograph our Crocodile from the other side as it crossed the viaduct. We were able to cross the viaduct on foot – a narrow strip at a height of 88 meters (290 feet)! The railroad depot in Landquart was also extremely interesting – you don’t often have the chance for such a carefree look behind the scenes. Club News: What do you mean – ’a carefree look’? Karsten Exner: We were able to go virtually anywhere we wanted – the Swiss are far more relaxed than German “railroad officials”. Where else could you take a panorama shot on a turntable with the overhead line live while behind you, normal railroad operations are going on? Absolutely marvelous! The only sad thing was the defective steam regulator on the rostered steam loco – the locomotive brake would not have worked properly, so we had to call on the Crocodile’s services again. As compensation, it was possible to take a cab journey, with fascinating insight into the work of a loco engineer and sensational views of the track alignment. Club News: And how did you get on with the other members of the Club? Angelika Exner: Meetings with others with the same interests are a super enrichment of the model railroad community. On the Rhaetian Railway tour we were all able to chat to each other and talk shop to our heart’s content – and that makes you look forward to the next trip. Text: R. Rademacher / photos: P. Departure: the trains can be accompanied on their runs all the way down the hall. There were four lines set out for digital and analog models. You’ll find a list of all Märklin Insider round tables in the Club area under club.maerklin.de – naturally, the contacts are given too. 20 What a good thing the route to the MIST 72 clubrooms leads through a big hallway with a long corridor leading off it. “Here we set up 698 pieces of H0 track into a total length of 168.94 meters (554'3")”, round table spokesman Horst Bossler tells us of the material war fed by the MIST-72 property box, which all went to plan thanks to a well-drawn-up track plan. After that, anyone could let his train really run for once. And they came – children, parents, grandparents, all brought their favorite Märklin models along. There were block trains with up to 30 freight cars to be seen, and in charge were the V 200, the “Crocodile”, double-headed class 101s or the “Big Boy”. “And of course the ICE and the TGV were sent out too”, adds round table member Ludger Flaig. “These high-speed trains soon run out of places to go on your conventional layout at home. By contrast, an ICE model on long tracks gives you a very much better idea of the original”. The trains are often accompanied on the run by excited kids or committed model railroaders. The Day of the Long Tracks involved all round table members. “The tracks for the analog and digital runs must be fixed without any malfunctions on carpet and tiles. And it’s all hands on deck when we’re railing all the cars”, adds round table leader Horst Bossler. No surprise that members of the Märklin Kids Club too were playing with rolling stock and controllers. MIST 72 always fans the sparks of enthusiasm cleverly at its public exhibitions with a range of technical demonstrations and information material. There is a display with details of all Märklin tracks since 1936, from the continuous center conductor to the current C track. The Faller Car system is demonstrated to amazed visitors, and this lowers the anxiety threshold to technology. At one table, a member explains the control functions of the Central Station, at the next, a demonstration Minitrix layout shows the advantages of smaller gauges, while a garden layout was set up in the entrance for the Dettingen LGB fans, on which even the phenomenal gauge 1 loco 38 1803 by Märklin was able to do the rounds. “Visitor feedback was unanimously positive, so the effort was well worth while”, sums up Horst Bossler. MIST 72 draws its own conclusion: “It will of course be repeated”. The successful event is shown in pictures and film on the homepage www.mist72.de. Text: RR/photos: A. Grossmann Märklin-Insider 03 / 2013 Spectacle: railing the block trains for their long journey, powered by the “Big Boy”, the class 44 or the 216. The ICE and TGV too rush out of the through station. Information meet Märklin retailers To visit a digital info day at your Märklin retailer is always worth while: here top models are on show and the very latest information and news about Märklin is also available first-hand. But there are also valuable tips on digital controls, presented in an understandable manner; indeed, in the Märklin digital seminar in the Märklin Store in Utrecht, even a video car was used. Questions are always welcomed – Märklin trainer Dieter Lorenz and Frans van Waes will answer all of them. This K 15 gondola with hinged roof-hatches as a track-cleaning car is only available at the Märklin retailers during the info day. It is an absolute must for anyone touring the South Tyrol to make a detour to Train World in Rabland – a place full of superlatives for all model railroad fans. This is the biggest digital model railroad layout in Italy and at the same time it is one of the biggest private collections of model trains in Europe. The visitor can experience a tour in miniature from Brennerbad to Mals in the world’s biggest panoramic staging of South Tyrol. The atmosphere there is unique, and this is partly due to the day and night effects, complemented by many lovingly-crafted details such as the nostalgic Rittnerbahn, the “turning star” at Mals and various aerial cableways. The Laas marble railroad and the popular Vinschgau train are also realistically and caringly replicated in 1:87 scale. The fantasy “central highlands” landscape with rail traffic from several historic eras has young and old staring in amazement. A special feature in 2013 will be the Anniversary exhibition “All aboard” (Einsteigen, bitte!, which recounts exciting episodes in the past hundred years from the Lana-Burgstall Bahn. Whether it’s a trip behind a historic steam loco or a diesel, or a guided tour of the loco shed and the well-laid-out museum, railroad enthusiasts in Schönheide will be looking everywhere for signs. For on what was the first, and the longest, Saxony narrow gauge railroad, closed in 1977, the Saxon IV K now chuffs along the line between Schönheide and Stützengrün in the picturesque Erz Mountains. Lots of volunteer commitment has succeeded in rebuilding a 4.5 km (2-3/4-mile) section of the former 42 km (26 mile) railroad. Since its formation in 1991, the Museumsbahn Schönheide e. V. association takes care of all aspects of building, operating and preservation of this narrowgauge railroad in Saxony. Working parties are active almost every Saturday, and those interested can take a close look at everything and visit the loco shed. The locos are in steam with historic passenger cars on average twelve weekends a year to take you on a run through the beautiful Central Highlands at the foot of the Kuhberg. In summer cold drinks are available during the journey, served from an open observation car with a counter. The combination of the 30th International Model Railway Exhibition and the 9th Märklin Open Days again guarantees technology to experience, a show of innovations and enjoyment with model railroad E 198465 and people with similar interests. The double event of course offers something special for Club members: once again there will be Club VIP entrance booths, in the Club lounge the Club team will welcome members with a little present and naturally there are plenty of activities planned to mark the 20th anniversary of the Märklin Insider Club. We’re not yet telling you exactly what, to keep the suspense alive.
