Our Mission: - The Cape Coral Community Foundation
Our Mission:
The mission of the Cape Coral Community Foundation is to support the public
well-being and to improve the quality of life in the greater Cape Coral community through the
stewardship of permanently endowed and gifted funds
Celebrating 40 Years
Celebrating 40 years
A message from Founding Board Member, Dave Gomer
I was a young banker in 1973, working with
Col. Lowell Mills, who chartered the first
bank in Cape Coral. Dallas Darling came
up with the idea of creating a community
foundation similar to the one in his
hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
So, five of us, Col. Mills, Dallas Darling,
Chandler Burton, Joe Adderly and I
David & Joyce Gomer
became the first Board of Directors for the
foundation that was named The Philanthropic Foundation of Cape Coral,
Inc. I did the record keeping for the foundation then. The mission of the
foundation was to improve the quality of life for people in our community.
Today the foundation continues its mission. It’s exciting for me to look
back and see how it has grown from the first donation of $10,000 to more
than $8.4 Million today. It is a tribute to all of the generous people who,
over the years, have given their time, talents and treasure to grow the Cape
Coral Community Foundation and make our community a better place to
live, work and play.
Happy 40th Cape Coral Community Foundation,
David W. Gomer

I was only eight years old when I moved to Cape Coral and there were only twenty-eight families here. Forty-six
years later, there are now 160,000 people and I have had the opportunity to be part of the history of this great
community. For all those who have been as fortunate as I have in making Cape Coral our home, it is important
for all of us to give our support back to the community that we have enjoyed. The Community Foundation will be
the “piggy bank” for tomorrow’s generations. I am a steward of Cape Coral and I believe it is my responsibility to
leave my hometown better than I found it.
Elmer Tabor ~ 1988-1999 Board Chairman
The Cape Coral Community Foundation is preparing to meet the challenges of the future. We can never relax and
think things will just happen – we need to make them happen. The Future depends on what we do today. There is
exciting and important work to be done. If you are a donor, take pride in what we are accomplishing together. If you
are not yet part of our efforts, we invite you to join us in providing lasting legacies for the greater Cape Coral area.
Patricia Portman ~ 1995-2004 First Executive Director
The future of the foundation is strong and vibrant, just like the community we serve. If you work, live or are in any
way concerned about the quality of life in Cape Coral, then the Cape Coral Community Foundation is for you!
Robert Biggs ~ 2000-2001 Board Chairman
There has never been a better time to focus on building “community.” Our community is barely 40 years old, yet we
already have more than 100,000 residents. All indications are that our community will continue to experience this
rapid growth. It is exciting to think about how we can shape the future of technology, communication, education,
health care, recreation, the arts, and travel in our community. Our residents face many challenges in working
together to build a model community - one that our children’s children will be proud to call home.
Tracy L. Lima ~ 2001-2002 Board Chairman
Growth. Change. Challenge. Progress. Cape Coral Community Foundation will continue to provide a vehicle for
donors to fulfill their philanthropic goals, and for diverse charitable organizations to meet the growing needs of
our citizens. Cape Coral Community Foundation is the piggy bank of the community. Let us all help fill the bank.
Martha S. Warchol ~ 2004-2005 Board Chairman
Through strategic planning, upgrading the financial and donor reporting systems, and expanding the operations,
the Board of Directors is positioning the Foundation for future growth and contribution opportunities. Their
focus on the future is critical for our continued growth and success.
Judith V. McGruther ~ 2004-2006 Executive Director

The Foundation serves as the “piggy bank” for Cape Coral by providing the necessary resources and opportunities
to benefit social and educational needs within the community. It is a unique vehicle by which individuals can
direct their resources and be assured that their desired outcome of philanthropy will be professionally managed
by the Board and staff of the Cape Coral Community Foundation.
Steve Pohlman ~ 2005-2007 Board Chairman
The Foundation is fortunate to have a staff that is committed to the Board’s mission and vision as well as a Board of
active individuals willing to give their time, talent, and resources to the Foundation and its activities. As a Board, we
continue to be enriched with new members that are passionate about the community and the rewards the Foundation
provides. The growth of Cape Coral will continue to present new challenges in meeting the needs of our community
and the Foundation stands ready to meet those challenges as we build our community through growth.
Bob Knight ~ 2008-2009 Board Chairman
One important role of the Cape Coral Community Foundation is to be a recognized leader in the community and
connect those who wish to give and who want to make a difference with those who are in need of a difference. Our
efforts and results then encourage additional giving and support which create more philanthropic dollars and increased
successes. Our combined successes then lead to stronger families and a healthier, more sustainable community.
The Cape Coral Community Foundation seeks innovative solutions beyond today’s needs alone. Through
creating philanthropic resources, we expand the horizon of our community’s future through fostering a variety of
opportunities that will positively impact future generations.
Joe Padgett ~ 2010-2013 Board Chairman
As we reflect on the past, we are grateful for the opportunity to strengthen and facilitate the philanthropic spirit
in Cape Coral. We are proud of our unique role in bringing individuals and organizations together to make
our community a better place for all. We appreciate the continuing support of our community as we work with
organizations and individuals from all walks of life to address current and future needs.
Thank you for allowing me to serve as the Executive Director of such a worthwhile organization in our hometown,
Beth Sanger ~ 2006-present Executive Director
Our pledge for the future generations is to lead, promote, facilitate and increase philanthropy in creating a
sustainable impact within our community through responsible giving. Please join us as we look to the future and
build on our success for generations to come.
Brian Gomer ~ 2014 Incoming Board Chairman

Iwo Jima Restoration Project
Tribute to a Soldier
On February 25, 2012, The
Iwo Jima statue at Four Mile
Cove Ecological Preserve was
rededicated, after a 2 year
community fundraising effort
to resort the statue.
Many thanks to Marine
Corps League Commandant
George Colom, the historian
and driving force for the
restoration project.
The restoration involved
restoring the outside of the
statue, such as the details of the soldiers’ hands, as well as the
inside foundation of the piece. DJ Wilkins was the sculptor;
Don Meek volunteered as the project engineer.
The statue is one of three official originals of its size that were
created by Felix de Weldon.
“To the city of Cape Coral, this statue stands as a memorial
and an honor to all of our men and women who have fought
and continue to fight for the freedoms that we Americans
enjoy,” states City Spokesperson Connie Barron. “I think that it
demonstrates Cape Coral’s commitment to our veterans.”
The Tribute
to a Soldier
statue project
was established
to honor the
dedication and
achievements
of our men and
women in the
armed services of
the United States.
The project was
the vision of two
Cape Coral
artists, Rudy Diaz and Dan Pardo. On May 31, 2010,
the unveiling of the statue took place with over 1,000
people in attendance. Seed money was provided by
the Cape Coral Community Foundation and an
ongoing fund to assist in maintaining the Veterans
Memorial area at Eco Park exists today.
The Iraq War Monument
The initial push to restore the crumbling piece, which had large
chucks of it being held together by bungee cords, came from the
family and friends of Craig T. Fuller, who served in the Marine
Corps for eight years.
On April 25, 2010, Fuller, 33, was ambushed and killed in
Afghanistan in a roadside attack. He had served there overseas
before going back to work as a private contractor. Fuller had
about five years of work in before he died.
According to his friends and family, Fuller fell in love with the
Iwo Jima monument when he was training at boot camp at
Parris Island. When he saw the condition of the Cape statue,
he wanted to make sure it was restored. After Fuller’s death,
they decided to do something about it. A fund in his name
was established with the help of the Cape Coral Community
Foundation and over $70,000 was raised with over $43,000
additional funding from the City of Cape Coral. In Memory of
Earle Tolles, wife Boots Tolles has established a Maintenance
Fund with the hope that many will come forward and help this
fund grow in perpetuity, to assist the City maintain the Iwo Jima
statue as well as the entire veterans memorial area at Eco Park.

inspire and entertain all of you. We
have had over 40 events ranging from
Ice Cream socials to author/speaker

Endowment stands at $136,749.00 and
the group has disbursed over $260,000
in grants, back into the Cape Coral
Community since 2003 touching close
to 60 nonprofit organizations.
We have had our Annual Holiday
Celebrations, Cocktail Receptions
including the Harbour View
Gallery, Sunset Cruises and our ever
popular Hurricane Parties, as well as
Motivational Speaker, Susan Vlahos
from California and local Speaker
Amanda Devine. The talented Rusty
Brown dazzled us with Encore Encore.
We toured the Cape Coral Hospital
Pediatric Wing, and the News-Press
invited us to be their first test group
in the world of Social Media! We have
even attended a wonderful play at
Cultural Park Theater. And of course
we are honored and recognized at the
Cape Coral Community Foundation’s
Annual Celebration.
We had our own sponsored tables at
events such as PACE Center for Girls
Luncheons, Mardi Bras and Boxers
and of course recently, Grande Dames
Tea honoring our own Boots Tolles.
And we finally made it to the Butterfly
Garden Estate in Fort Myers! Last Year
we had an amazing turn out for the
