2016 Chenango County Fair Guide
Mr. and Mrs. Chenango County Fair 2016 The Chenango County Agricultural Society Board of Directors is pleased to have Syd and Pat McEvoy represent our 169th Chenango County Fair and serve as our ambassadors particularly for the youth and 4-H areas. They will be present for many events and we know that you will be pleased to spend some time with them and reminiscing about the great years spent at our Fair. Syd and Patti McEvoy both grew up on dairy farms in Marathon, NY. His family owns Mac-Mara Holsteins, and he grew up showing cattle a the Broome County Fair, Cortland Junior Fair, and New York State Fair. Syd received his Associate’s Degree from SUNY Cobleskill, and his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree from Cornell University in Animal Science and Agricultural Education. Patti earned a degree from Mohawk Community College in Advertising and Print Production. Syd became the 4-H agent in Chenango County in June of 1980, a position he held for 18 years. During this time, the Harry L. Case 4-H Building was built to showcase the youth exhibits during the fair. He also worked with the Chenango County fair board and Cooperative Extension to obtain grants and donations to construct the Follett Showring and the Margaret Johnson Milking Parlor. Syd also began the Adopt-a-Calf Program that allowed non-farm youth to use a calf as a 4-H project without actually owning one. This program model has now gone state-wide and these 4-Hers can even show at the New York State Fair. Syd got his start announcing dairy shows at the Chenango County Fair. He now serves as announcer for the new York State Holstein Carousel held each spring in Syracuse, the Central New York Holstein Show, the Cortland County Junior Fair, and the Tompkins County Holstein Show. He has also judged dairy shows, both confirmation and showmanship, at the Chenango, Otsego, Delaware, and Oswego County Fairs. Syd and Patti are both dedicated to community service. He is a past president of the Cortland Rotary Club, and currently serves as Chairman of the Christmas Tree Project, Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser, and High School Scholarship Committee for the Marathon Lions’ Club. Patti is team leader for her Relay for Life team, raising money and walking to raise awareness and find a cure for cancer. They have two grown children, both who were active 4-Hers in Cortland and Chenango Counties. Matt is now team leader of the machinery and field crops team at the Cornell University Dairy Cattle Research Center in Harford, NY. Meghan is a 7th grade English teacher and soccer/track coach at Marathon Central School. Syd retired in 2012 from CCE Cortland, where he was the Executive Director for 32 years. He now keeps busy by working full time on the family farm. Patti is working as brand manager for Oraline, a dental care company in Cortland, NY. As many know, Jackson was an impressive contestant in season 13 of American Idol, Jackson, a recent graduate from Norwich high school, was named Valedictorian of the class of 2016. This honor was bestowed upon her, as just the cherry on top of the already illustrious career including: a New York State Country Music Hall of Fame Horizon Award, won Disney World American Idol experience at Hollywood studios when she was just 14. In 2011, Jackson won the Horizon award from the New York State Country Music Hall of Fame, when she was just 13. With her high school career behind her, the world stands at Kaitlyn Jackson's feet as she will, in a short time, embark on yet another journey, college. After traveling all over the country and auditioning for a multitude of different colleges and universities over the past few months, Jackson has officially decided to stay in New York State, where she will attend Ithaca College in the fall of 2016. “I am going to Ithaca College and I will be in the BSA Acting program, which has both vocal and dance requirements, so it was really the best of all the worlds put together, I am excited,” said Jackson. “It is beautiful there, I just got back from orientation and all the people I met are fantastic so I am super excited. I auditioned for like 14 different schools, and it was crazy. Very eye opening for me, but it took up 160 percent of my time.” Despite the drain on Jackson's time, she still has found time to participate in Amber Perkins school of the arts where she traveled to Florida to perform Norwich Monuments LLC. Now that a Valedictorian has been named, a college has been picked, and a national title has been won, Kaitlyn Jackson will be excitedly getting back to her roots right here in Chenango County when she performs with her band at the upcoming Chenango County Fair. This year the band will be composed of John Jackson on backup vocals, Brenna Swanger on rhythm and lead guitar, Ross Rogers on drums, and Ron Richards on base guitar, while Kaitlyn sings. Kaitlyn shared her pre-performance ritual, something she seems to have added onto some since last year. Now in its 100th year in the carnival business, Coleman Brothers Shows will return to the Chenango County Fairgrounds for yet another round of family friendly rides, games and entertainment. Started as a one-man show in 1926, Coleman Brothers Shows has since taken off to include more than 30 rides, games and other concessions operated with the help of more than 50 workers during the busy season. It all began when Richard Coleman purchased a used merry-go-round for $250 and charged for rides where it was set up near the Portland Bridge. Word spread about the ride, as did Coleman’s ambitions. He started booking shows in different towns and, with help from • Floral Displays • School Arts • Master Gardeners • Chenango County Soil & Water District his brothers, more rides were purchased and concessions added as the years went by. Eventually, Coleman’s sons got in the carnival business as well. Today, the operation is run by Bob Coleman, one of Richard’s sons, and his wife, Rachel. According to the Coleman Brothers website, the traveling carnival is always seeking new attractions to keep the excitement thriving. It’s what a lot of people look for at the fair.” As the Fair Association gets ready to kick off the 169th annual Chenango County Fair, Weidman said the midway will offer the same exciting appeal as always... and then some. “The Coleman Brothers have a couple new rides this year,” she added. “They put a lot of time and effort into making sure equipment is maintained, an lights are working, and everything is ready.” For more information on the Coleman Brothers Shows and its longstanding history in the traveling carnival business in Chenango County and throughout the country, visit their website at colemanshows.com. A FEW GOOD STEEDS By Shawn Magrath [email protected] What would a fair stooped in agriculture be without the help of a few good steeds? That’s the thought behind bringing horses back to help patrol the fairgrounds for the third year. Throughout all six days of the fair, horses will be used to help monitor the parking lot, midway, and all other attractions that bring nearly 50,000 people to the fair each summer. “Just having people higher up helps us see what’s going on,” said Chenango County Fair Board member Jason Lawrence. “Plus, people really enjoy seeing the horses. On Tuesday, opening day of the fair, harness racing returns to the Chenango County track, giving spectators a look at some of the best racers in the state. “We’re fortunate to have one of the best tracks in the fair racing circuit,” said Lawrence, citing near record-breaking times that have been set at the Norwich track over the years. “We’ve seen a lot of fast times at the track, and it’s because we’re able to maintain it. It gets damaged quickly because of different events and because of flooding in the spring, so it takes almost a full year to keep preparing that track; but it pays off.” If racing isn’t your thing, then here’s something else to pique your interest: Roman Riding. Roman Riding is standing on two horses, one foot on each horse. Throughout the fair, JD Winslow equestrian entertainment will feature a Roman Rider traveling the fairgrounds and bringing a whole new sense of wonderment to a longlasting equestrian sport. As always, fair goers can also pay a visit to the stables of the Chenango County fairgrounds. GARDEN TRACTOR PULLS AT THE CHENANGO COUNTY FAIR By Kieran Coffey [email protected] The Brookfield Garden Tractor Pullers Association Inc. is a small organization, located in Greenwich, NY. 2016 Chenango County Fair • Published by The Evening Sun & Pennysaver Page 19 for s r a d n Cale r u o Y Mark 170th Year air the Co. They offer 22 different classes of garden tractor pulls, ranging from eight horsepower or less, all the way up to four-cylinder modified garden tractors. For those who don’t know, Garden Tractor pulls involve using modified garden tractors to pull a heavy sled along a 35 foot wide, 100 meter (330 foot) long track, with the winner being the tractor or truck that pulls the sled the farthest. All tractors in their respective classes pull a set weight in the sled. When a tractor or truck gets to the end of the track, this is known as a "full pull". When more than one tractor or truck completes a "full pull", more weight is added to the sled, and those competitors compete in a pull-off. The winner is the one who can pull the sled the longest length of the track. The sleds weigh approximately 6,000 or more pounds. The speed at which the weighted box moves up the sled, and the gearing applied, both control the difficulty of the pull. The sled is set and controlled by the sled master. People from all over the state flock to see certain attractions like the petting zoo, demolition derby, live entertainment, fireworks, and last but certainly not least: the food. It goes without saying that food vendors are a staple at the Chenango County fair, with vendors from near and far showcasing their delicious treats. All week long, the fair food vendors will be set up and ready to please your taste buds. Aside from scrumptious funnel cakes, candy apples, homemade taffy, and fried you-name-its, local vendors from Norwich and the Chenango County area are also an instrumental part of the food culture at the fair. That’s teamwork... working for you! Anyone who’s walked a lap at the Chenango County Fair has seen the different rides, food vendors, game booths, and animals. But tucked away inside the exhibition hall is a part of the fair that many people over look. The exhibition area at the Chenango County Fair showcases some of the most interesting products of the county. Some commercial businesses will be set up on the east side of the exhibition hall to sell and advertise their products. On the west side of the exhibition hall is one of the more exciting parts of the fair: the exhibit entries. People from around the county enter their maple syrup, farm-crops, forest crops, hay, wheat, oats, corn, and almost any other kinds of vegetable to be spectated and judged. “We want to focus on the fact that the County Fair is agriculturally based,” said exhibition Hall volunteer Karen Edwards. “There will be just about any kind of vegetable that you can think of available for judging.” While at the Chenango County Fair this year, don’t overlook the exhibition hall where some of the county’s finest commodities are on display. AMERICAN FIREWORKS American Fireworks Manufacturing Company Inc. began its roots in the United States when Vincenzo Speciale emmigrated from Palermo, Sicily leaving behind two generations of Master Pyrotechnicians. When Vincenzo arrived in the U.S., he started The Italian American Fireworks Company. With the help of his son Joseph they built up the business as one of New York State's leaders in display fire- works. Joseph became a Master Pyrotechnician under his father's guidance. Vincenzo died in 1936 leaving Joseph in charge of the growing company. With the outbreak of World War II, the fireworks display business came to an abrupt halt. Joseph used his pyrotechnic knowledge to manufacture grenades to help the war effort. After the war, fireworks once again thrived. Joseph shortened the company name to the American Fireworks Mfg. Co. Business was booming for the new American Fireworks. The whole family was involved in the manufacturing processes of making enough fireworks for the many displays and customers. After dinner and the dishes were done, the kitchen table was used to roll the paper cases and tubes that would be taken up to the shop on Dutch Hill Road. These tubes and cases would be filled with the secret ingredients to make them into Fireworks. (The Dutch Hill Road Facility in Frankfort N.Y. is still in use today). American Fireworks Mfg. Co. was now considered the largest manufacturer of display Fireworks in New York State. The company entered the 1990s with steady growth, more leadership help was needed. Vincent hired Kevin Fritschler, a seasoned pyrotechnician, to help oversee the company's operations. Vincent taught Kevin all aspects of the business as he had learned from his father. Under Vincent's guidance and supervision, Kevin also became a Master Pyrotechnician. With the constant growth in the displays, American Fireworks has been forced to outsource much of its manufacturing today. Our products are still made with the same high quality old world traditions as always. Many products still use the secret formulas brought over with Vincenzo Speciale from Palermo, Sicily in a little black book. Their specialty line of manufactured fireworks products are still made in rural upstate New York. Many high volume fireworks items are manufactured in China, Spain and Japan. Some of these items are made at a factory in China that works exclusively with the American Fireworks Mfg. Co. Inc. Where ever the products are made, Vincent and Kevin constantly check on production to ensure the safety and high quality of their products. From making products on the family's kitchen table to internationally located factories, hand firing displays with a cigar to computerfired pyro musicals, American Fireworks continues to evolve into the future as a fireworks leader.
