The sound of your voice is my new favorite song; if you spoke all day I would listen. And in the morning when our sleepy eyes open and your gravity pulls my body into yours 19 I forget about the chapped lips and stuffy noses because the first kiss of the day is just as sweet 15 as the last kiss of the night -‐ though softer, drowsier, gentle as the sun in May-‐ 10 I take you in like pure oxygen; every breath is the first I’ve ever breathed. 8 I want to hold your hand in mine every time I see it, I want to brush my fingers through the silk of your hair and feel the stubble on your face cupped against my palm. I want to hear your secrets; This issue worked on by Meredith Jacobs, Nick Bond, Kyle Mackey, and Sara Konecny. Cover art by Tanika Bantukul. Submissions: [email protected] 1 shake hands with the skeletons in your closet, feel the chill of the ghosts that haunt your dreams. 2 You are the world after a rainstorm: ambrosial, vivacious, effervescent, bright, clean, but you run through my veins like a fire in a forest and I would cross continents to follow the trails of your smoke. I hope that you look forward to seeing me as much as I anticipate seeing you. I hope that I make you smile because my lips turn up of their own accord every time you come around. I hope that you want to know me like the back of your own two hands, and that once you do, you see enough good in me to keep me by your side. I see nothing but good in you. School is important, but your self-‐worth is not dependent on your academic performance. 1. Figure out how much coffee your body can handle and consume slightly more than that amount. You will be invincible. (Disclaimer: if you drink too much coffee you will die. Don’t die.) 2. Fight everyone who challenges you. 3. If someone has the nerve to criticize the way you look, punch them in the face and continue being fabulous. 4. It’s okay to be aggressive sometimes (see 2 and 3). 5. You are not disgusting for spending all weekend drinking, partying, and eating unhealthy food. Drink some tea, sleep it off, go to the gym in the morning, and don’t be so hard on yourself for having fun. 6. A little vanity is acceptable when the alternative is self-‐loathing. 7. Your parents are right more often than you think. Give them the benefit of the doubt and listen to what they have to say even if you think they are wrong or “just don’t understand.” At the end of the day, they just want you to be happy. 8. Your friends are precious. Treat them as such and they will fill your life with joy. 9. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Not being able to figure something out by yourself does not make you stupid. 11. The best way to make someone like you for a short time is to give them candy. The best way to make someone like you for a long time is to show them they can count on you. 12. Humor is the key to both diffusing tension and making an awkward situation even more awkward. Use this power wisely. 13. Sleep is not for the weak. Go to bed. 14. The more confident you are, the more you can get away with. 15. Love is a powerful force. Give as much of it as you can to those around you. 16. Life is constantly giving you opportunities to brighten someone else’s day. Take advantage of as many of those opportunities as you can. 17. Avoid self-‐sabotage. The first step to success is to be your own advocate. 18. Remove all sources of negativity from your life, even if it means saying goodbye to someone you care about. If that person thinks it’s acceptable to spend their time bringing you down, then they aren’t worthy of your affection anyways. 19. Life is short. Do something crazy every once in a while. 20. Follow your heart and be your own woman (AKA, do what you want and give no fucks). 5 6 Weary Traveler DIY Pressed Flower iPhone Case Thomas Speers Tutorial and images by Sara Konecny Come, weary traveler, and sit a while. Even by the light of the distant stars your face is tattooed with lines of worry. Perhaps you have crossed the great desert, or the polar waste Where no sun rises and night reigns. But it is no matter. Come, weary traveler, and sit a while. Here there is repast aplenty Fine food to compare with what your mother once made And sweet water to quench a thirst So great that no tears could fall. But it is no matter. Stay a while, my friend And my son will play you beautiful music on many instruments. Or perhaps we can simply listen to the music of the stars For words come best when they are ready And not before. But of course it is no matter. Lay down your troubles, weary traveler. If nothing else, my home is a place of rest. The monsters that scream do not come here. That which keeps you up at night Has no power here. See now, the night is passing, And day shall come again. Come, weary traveler, and sit a while. 7 Inspired by various phone cases on Etsy, rather than pay $40 for a phone case that doesn’t even cover my phone all the way, I decided to purchase my own more durable case and customize it with my own floral arrangement! You will need freshly picked flowers (for my personal case I used one large cluster, but for this example I used several tiny flowers, as those seem to be more popular), paper towels, a heavy book (organic chemistry works well), Mod Podge if you like, and a clear phone case. I like the Luvvitt brand clearview case from Amazon since it covers my phone all the around the edges rather than snapping on, and it is available for Prime shipping. Once you have dried the flowers and arranged them to your liking, you can seal them with Mod Podge if you like, but if you are fickle and scared of commitment like I am, you can leave them loose to change out as you please, and just take caution when taking your phone in and out of the case. Either way, you will be left with a fun and unique new phone case for spring. Happy crafting! 8 Commercial Airline Black Market Interview by Meredith Jacobs 1) Once you have picked your flowers, gather your materials. 2) Remove the stems, place between paper towels, and close between pages of book. The newest face of Atlanta punk, Under the Couch’s own all-‐girls (and one boy) band, Commercial Airline Black Market, tell Lint & Loose Change all about their first official performance, Sid’s pants, and what punk means to them. How did you start the band? Sid: “Originally, last semester, a bunch of girls decided to play ‘Cherry Bomb’ [by The Runaways] at Open Mic, and from there we decided that there should be two girls bands – a harder one and a softer one. Roshni, Greta and I decided to be the harder one. But we needed a guitarist. At the beginning of the semester we found Tyler at one of the meetings.” …An all girls band with Tyler. 3) Let flowers press for 1-‐2 weeks, or until dry. 4) Once the flowers are dry, it’s time to place them in the case. Tyler: “Yeah people want me to wear a wig.” Tell me about the name? Greta: “I play on the drumline in the marching band. [My boyfriend] Chris is also on the drumline, and he always came up with silly business ventures. We would always talk about how to fund them, and my friend Brandon came up with the ideal of stealing commercial airliners and selling them on the black market.” Who are your major influences? 5) Arrange the flowers face down and gently place your phone in the case. 6) Enjoy your new, custom phone case!!! Sid: “Pennywise, Green Day, Antiflag, and Smashing Pumpkins; they have a girl bassist and are super cool.” 10 Roshni: “The Lake Street Dive, Amy Lee, Flyleaf. I’m a Parawhore, so Paramore.” What does punk mean to you? Roshni: “Fuck.” Tyler: “Mayday Parade and Blink 182.” Sid: “In one word, anarchy.” Greta: “I like bands like Twelve Foot Ninja, Nothing More, and Periphery.” Roshni: “Tryna fuck.” Roshni: “Just give her your [Sid’s] pants.” Greta: “I’m not punk at all. But Sid is punk enough for all of us.” Sid: “Yeah, my pants, just take my pants.” Roshni and Tyler: “Whatever Sid says is punk.” Sid: “Fuck authority. Punk is basically doing whatever you want. Not giving a fuck about anything. Saying ‘Fuck you government and capitalism. Let’s be equal and be nice to each other.’” Roshni: “So first fuck everything and then be nice to each other…?” Sid: “No, fuck the government because they’re above us and dictating the rules and they have all the money.” Roshni: “So communism…?” Sid: “Kinda. True anarchy is everyone being nice to each other.” What is the song writing/cover song selection process like? Sid: “I was having breakfast with Greta and she was like, ‘Hey Sid, I have practice time. Lets jam.’ And I was like, ‘Okay.’ And I had just learned this song and we played that. Then we covered it as a band.” Sid’s pants. Photo by Caroline Walden. Tyler: “Other times we just play random stuff until we find something that we like.” Greta: “We chose some easy songs to start with so we 11 12 could get used to playing together as a band. We'll start playing some harder stuff soon.” Sid: “As for song writing, we just mess around.” Greta: “Everything starts with the bass. Once Sid has a riff, I can play a beat to it, Tyler can write over it, and Roshni can make a melody with some crazy lyrics.” Roshni: “I spew whatever words come to my brain.” What are your plans for the future? Greta: “We plan to get into some heavier stuff soon. We want to play "Always" by Killswitch Engage and also write some new songs with more instrumentally demanding parts.” Sid: “Release an EP called Colonial Pipeline.” Tyler: “…which is the name of my dad’s company. For some reason everyone likes it so much.” From one of our readers: why are you so hot? Sid: “I don’t know. Maybe the sunglasses.” Greta: “Thanks, Caroline.” Roshni: “It gets pretty steamy in here when we’re fucking authority so much.” Anything else? Greta: “It was really cool, it being our first show. I was really nervous. We had some mess-‐ups, but we stuck together. I was pleasantly surprised by the turn-‐out of people there. It was a completely different experience than an Open Mic. It was so much more fun because people were more involved. I hope we can be in more shows!” Sid: “To quote Roshni from our first Open Mic, ‘We are Commercial Airline Black Market and um yeah.’” 13 14 Commercial Airline Black Market performing at the UNICEF Benefit Concert on February 18. How was your first performance at the UNICEF Benefit Concert on February 18? Sid: “It was awesome.” “Devour” – The Organ Machines Genre: Progressive Rock, Post-‐Surf Music Submissions Nick Bond Scan the QR code and check out these original music submissions by local Under the Couch, Georgia Tech, and Atlanta-‐based artists! Send your own original music submissions, along with a short description of the piece to [email protected], and check out our SoundCloud, soundcloud.com/lint-‐loose-‐change ! “Geeked Up” – El Jefe Genre: Trap The Organ Machines are Alex McIntyre, Chris Deese, and Derek Liddell. “Devour” is the single off of our EP entitled “Parallels,” being released on March 6th, accompanied by a show at Under The Couch. Unfortunately, Live Loyal Die Royal isn't the first album El Jefe (@jefenawf) struggled to keep under wraps until its intended release date. LLDR will be El Jefe's second studio album and it doesn't disappoint. It’s only a matter of time before El Jefe is recognized as one of the top talents of the industry! “Hero’s Path” – Atomic Hourglass Genre: Electronic “Hero’s Path” is a (orchestral) brass-‐heavy, instrumental hip-‐hoppy thing for my upcoming EP, Scratchings on the Wall, to be released pretty soon with Atomic Hourglass. 15 16 To Anonymous Written in response to last month’s submission, “Missing the Boat.” To Anonymous: You’re not needy, you’re not looking for attention, but we want to give you attention and love you. That’s why people at UTC love hugs so much. On girls: Ÿ Experience isn’t necessarily what they’re looking for. Ÿ I had a boyfriend last semester, and it was both of our first relationships. It was a new experience for both of us, and it was fun while it lasted. I thought I’d never have a boyfriend that was this attractive (and I mean Hollister-‐level abs) and about a week into dating him, I realized that this dude was wayyy not compatible with me. He did things like drugs; I wanted to watch movies and laugh. He turned out to be one of the most uncaring people I have ever met. Ÿ It’s been about two months since I broke up with this fella, and I’ve (kinda sorta) started to fall for a boy who is not the most conventionally attractive. But he’s kind, and polite, and Southern-‐sweet. He’s not the classic guy that you would think most girls would fall for, but I like him a thousand times better as a human being than my old boyfriend. On depression: Ÿ You are not your depression. Ÿ You are your own person who is affected by it. The people around you care about you and will not be 17 frightened or pushed away by it. They don’t think of you as a walking ball of depression (believe me, I know); they think of you as a person, and when they find out about what you go through, they’ll still think of you as a person. May be even a person they want to be close to, because they have gone through the same thing. I know I have. Ÿ It’s wonderful that you enjoy music. Obviously you’re pretty good at it to be invited to play on stage. That’s pretty cool. Ÿ Letting someone to confide in you is the greatest gift you can give anyone. And so, kind sir, I beg you to refute your statement that no one likes a desperately unhappy friend. Unhappiness is not a definition. Plus, since you said you’d like to provide for your family when you grow up, it’s pretty obvious that you care. A lot. And we care too. At the end of the day, you’ve been trudging through some really rough stuff. Family issues, some bad childhood memories, depression, and self-‐doubt (in addition to Tech). The fact that you made it this far (and play music on stage) says something. It takes a lot of strength to get through all of that. Stay strong. Email us if you wanna meet up and talk sometime. -‐Beep-‐Beep [email protected] 18 This page unintentionally left blank. By Thomas Speers. 19
