ANNUAL HERO-TO-HEROES AWARD CEREMONY
STEPHEN’S
STORY
& OUR
GOLF
EVENTS
The Hero-to-Hero Awards are presented annually to brave individuals who best embody the service spirit of Stephen Siller.
SSGT CHRISTIAN ENGLEDRUM, NY ARMY
NATIONAL GUARD & NYC FIREFIGHTER
FDNY, STEPHEN SILLER
On Sept. 11, 2001, Stephen Siller, a 34 year old fire-fighter, took his final
heroic steps as he ran with his gear through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to
the World Trade Center to help save others. Thousands of lives were saved
that day, but this was not to be Stephen’s destiny.
On that tragic summer’s day, 9/11/01, Stephen had just completed his
scheduled tour with the FDNY, and was traveling to meet his brothers to
play a traditional round of golf. However, he decided to go back and help
others, and unfortunately, the innocence of an entire nation died that day.
The NYC 5K RUN & WALK traces the footsteps he took on that fateful day. In running along his path, the 15th annual run on September 25th
not only honors Stephen, but also his 342 firefighter brothers and all 2,977
innocent people who perished on 9/11.

Christian Engledrum, 39, who rescued survivors from
the World Ttrade Ctr. rubble after the Sept. 11 attacks,
made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq on Nov. 29, 2004.
Engledrum was assigned to the NYANG’s 1st Battion
69th Inf regiment. Christian, a father of three, died when
his Humvee came under attack and was struck by
an IED outside Baghdad, Iraq.
Christian also served in Desert
Storm in 1990. He started his public
service career as a NYC Police
Officer, then became a member
of the FDNY in 1999, assigned to
Ladder Co. 61 in the Bronx.
NYPD Sgt. EDWARD NED THOMPSON,
9/11 FIRST RESPONDER
Sgt. Ned Thompson operated the street narcotics enforcement unit in the West Village’s Sixth Precinct, supervising
thousands of arrests, most notably in Washington Square Park.
As a first responder on 9/11 and the following months he
worked the bucket brigades, sifting through the debris in hopes
of finding survivors. Later, he developed a hacking cough
which was unusual for a nonsmoker. In December, 2007 he
was diagnosed with lung cancer. Sadly, in March 2008, this
superstar cop who lived in West Brighton with his wife Justine
and four young girls, lost the battle for his life in Memorial
Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
SSGT JAMES McNAUGHTON US ARMY RESERVE & NYC POLICE OFFICER
James joined the NYPD in July 2001 after he served 5 years in the military,
and was assigned to the subway transit Bureau. On August 2, 2005, Staff
Sgt. James McNaughton, 27, was the first member of the NYPD to be killed
in action in Iraq. James was serving in the Army Reserves when he was shot
by a sniper while training Iraqi police near Baghdad. Police commissioner Ray
Kelly said James embodied the NYPD motto, “Fidelis ad Mortem - Faithful
until death.”
SPECIAL RECOGNITION TO THE 101st CAVALRY FOR THEIR 9-11 DEPLOYMENT
Within 8 hours of the first plane hitting the North Tower, the first advance party of the 1-101st Cavalry was deployed to
ground zero. They immediately set-up Squadron operations and troops soon followed. The Squadron spent one month
supporting rescue efforts at the “pit” while providing a security perimeter. For all their heroic efforts, we applaud and
recognize the often ignored 101st Cavalry’s efforts during and after 9-11..
