You are a member of the 2nd largest coaches association in the United States. Many high school coaches and college speakers have said that this is one of the best clinics in the nation. I am hoping that you are able to take something from this year’s clinic and go back to your school to make the young men in your program better this coming year and for years to come. The theme for the 2016 clinic is “Prepare for the End” and it is my hope that all of you set your goals high and start preparing for your team to reach Huntington Park. My involvement on this board for the past 6 years has allowed me the opportunity to witness great improvements the association has made. It is my honor to give back as Director of the 2016 State Clinic. The venue at the Hyatt Regency and Columbus Convention Center is just one example of the first class operation we are here to witness. If there is anything that any of our 24 board members or the Hyatt personnel can do to make your experience more enjoyable, please let us know. Your board is committed to making this a most enjoyable and rewarding experience, and represents you throughout the entire year. We have the opportunity to recognize and honor five (5) of our own with their induction into our OHSBCA Hall of Fame this weekend. I truly hope that you take the opportunity to attend our banquet on Friday at noon in the Ballroom to honor these five great men who have given so much to their schools, community and our association. There are also many other awards given to your peers and scholarships to the children of our members; you should not miss this banquet. I have taken great pride in putting together a great lineup of clinic speakers who have a variety of messages that will help you “Prepare for the End”. We continue to learn and seek out information and I feel that this year’s speakers will truly help all of us grow our players and build a stronger program. It has been an honor to serve as president of the second largest state baseball coaches association in the country. My time on the board has helped me grow both as a person and as a coach. I have been fortunate to meet and learn from many great coaches throughout the state and the nation and make many new friends. It has been a very rewarding experience and I would encourage all coaches to get involved in their district and state associations. This year Don Schone has done a great job of putting together the clinic and Tom Neubert has worked hard lining up vendors for the exhibit hall. A special thanks goes out to all our Executive Board members and the district reps for the work you’ve done and most importantly for your professionalism that has made my time as president go so smoothly. Please take a minute to thank them for all the work they do throughout the year. Lastly, I want to thank our host the Hyatt Regency and all our sponsors who help make it possible for us to put on such a first class clinic and do many wonderful things for members and their players. Enjoy the weekend and good luck to all this spring! Thursday, January 21, 2016 3:05pm Regency Ballroom, Hyatt Convention Center Pitchers Preseason Competitive Training “CREATE a QUALITY PITCHING STAFF of STRIKE THROWERS thru Competition” - QUALITY PITCHING is the Foundation for Success in Baseball and can dominate the game. Goal of 10 strike outs per game. - LEARNING to COMPETE CREATES QUALITY PITCHERS. - COACH AND PITCHING STAFF MUST BE COMMITTED to this program. PLAYERS who pitch are ALWAYS considered Pitchers 1st. Must complete the system, no matter the weather. - String Strike Zones made from yellow seine twine. Pitchers throw through String Strike Zones daily. - The charting system. Recommend the varsity candidates chart on Mondays and Thursdays. Underclassmen on Tuesdays and Fri. On off days, work on curves balls, and change ups and slide steps out of stretch for 10-12 minutes. Throw through strings. Wednesdays dedicated to “Pitcher Fielding Practice” or “Pick Off” Moves - PITCHERS COMPETE ….15 pitches per innings, followed by pitch out right and pitch out left. - GRADABLE CHARTS are simply 2 numbered columns; one for strikes the other balls. (see sample) 1st inning is always from wind up. The second inning from the stretch with pitcher assuming whatever count he ended with in the first inning. Mark an “F” for fastball, “C” for curve, “Ch” for change up and “S” for slider in proper column. When, there is either a strike out or a walk….. a slash is made through that number and a big K or W is marked on the chart. When a chart is completed…… the partner counts the strike outs vs walks. He adds up the number of fastballs for strikes, curves for strikes and the number of change ups for strikes. There is built in pressure to out perform partner. - CATCHERS: use appropriate stance for wind up vs stretch. Catchers call for pitch outs right and and left, when the 15 pitches are up. Catchers work on “footwork” on pitch out. - COACHING ANALYSIS: The coach needs to GRADE the charts daily. Areas of concern: [ ] starting every batter off with FASTBALL [ ] too many Fastballs or too few Change Ups. Write comments and always reward great performances with A+ - COMPILE on going records so that PITCHERS PERFORMANCES are compared over 6 weeks. LET the STUDENT BODY, see the CHARTS and the Records, to enhance the pressure to compete. - PROGRESSION Week 1…10 min. Wind Up and 5 Min. from Stretch. Throw All Pitches…Mon. Wed. and Fri. Congratulations to these assistant coaches who have helped develop their program throughout the year. Nominations for 2016 Assistant Coach of the Year will be due by June 1, 2016 to your senior district representative. East Assistant Coach of the Year – Tyler Buchanan – John Glenn High School Tyler Buchanan has been with the John Glenn baseball program for the past six years. He was the JV coach for the first five years and served as the varsity assistant last year. During his time here our program has flourished. He brings enthusiasm and toughness with him every day. He graduated in 2003 and was a senior my first year as head coach at JGHS. Tyler works with our infielders and pitchers and is constantly researching and implementing drills to develop our players to their full potential. During games he coaches first and calls our pitches. After games and during the off season he works on the field. He spends countless hours and money improving our field. He works in Columbus and drives to New Concord for practice every day. Tyler is married to his wife Kelli and has two children, Blaise and Briley. Southwest Assistant Coach of the Year – Joe Molony – Mason High School Joe has coached high school baseball for over 25 years and been part of numerous championship seasons, including two state titles. In terms of preparing our program to be successful on the field, Joe has moved us forward in many ways. He is our varsity pitching coach and program pitching coordinator. He has been instrumental in creating a program wide philosophy and approach that has proved to be very successful. In addition to his pitching duties, Joe has led our base running instruction, helping to create an aggressive mentality on the bases. Joe’s impact on our program has gone far beyond the field. He has been instrumental in several culture impacting initiatives as well. Lastly, Joe’s commitment of time and energy can’t be measured and as a head coach it’s so valuable to me. Simply put, our program wouldn’t be anywhere close to where it is today without Joe and his influence. Southeast Assistant Coach of the Year – Steve Miller – Trimble Local High School Steve has been coaching with me for 15 years. Steve was my high school coach in the late 70s. He has coached at the high school, American Legion, and college summer teams. He is the best teacher of baseball fundamentals that I know. Our success at Trimble Local is greatly due to Steve and his compassion for the game of baseball and the kids of Trimble Local. Steve and his wife Peggy have two children, Amanda and Zach. They are also the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren....all boys. Steve Miller exemplifies what this award is all about. Northeast Assistant Coach of the Year – Jeff Luca – Twinsburg High School Coach Luca has been an assistant coach at Twinsburg for the last 9 years. He joined our program after spending 14 years at Solon High School where he is presently employed. Coach Luca has one of the highest baseball IQ’s I have ever been around in my 25 plus years as a head coach. But that is not why he is so valuable to our program, that comes from the type of man, mentor, coach, and person he is to our young men that are looking for guidance in so many realms of their lives. He is always there for our young men with baseball as well as their development as a person. He carries himself in such a positive manner that it models the behavior that we want out of our Twinsburg baseball players. Coach Luca’s addition to our program has had such a positive effect on the entire program and the baseball community. I cannot say enough about what a major influence Coach Luca has been on our young men as well as making the rest of our staff better at what we are trying to accomplish. He is a great man and coach! Central Assistant Coach of the Year – Jerry Thorp – Lakewood High School th Jerry (Coach JT) is entering his 24 season as Varsity Assistant coach after graduating in 1990 and playing for his father Don, the longtime and legendary coach of the Lancers. His first 13 seasons were spent as a volunteer assistant before becoming a paid coach in the 2006 season. He works diligently to help each player at the highest level possible both on the field and in the classroom, staying in touch with their teachers and checking on grades even though he doesn’t teach. He is an integral part of fundraising efforts for the entire baseball program and teams. Jerry enters all game statistics and performs many off the field duties. He stays involved with the Lakewood Youth Baseball program and teams and coached our summer Babe Ruth teams for 20 years. He also helped kick start the Lakewood Alumni baseball game and festivities in the summer of 2014 with the help of a few former players. Jerry’s passion, enthusiasm, commitment and dedication to make our program continually better goes beyond the field and makes him very deserving of this award. He has been a part of winning 3 state titles in 1993, 1994, & 2005 as well as the many other successes of the Lakewood Lancer Baseball program. Jerry resides in Hebron, and has a daughter LaShelle (7) and son Blaydan (5). Northwest Assistant Coach of the Year – Rick Bowerman – Seneca East High School Rick Bowerman has been an assistant coach at Seneca East for over twenty years. For several years, Coach Bowerman worked as a volunteer devoting his time and energies without having a supplemental contract. He has assisted at all levels of the program including head freshman coach, head junior varsity coach, and assistant varsity coach. His knowledge of the game has been instrumental to the success of the program at Seneca East. For five years he was a head coach at Clyde High School before returning to Seneca East to be an assistant on my staff. I have valued his expertise in all areas of the game. As an assistant coach, Rick can be placed in charge of anything involving our program. He has done all our stats electronically for the last several years, has been involved in all our fundraising activities, and is presently the president of our local community baseball program. A nicer, kinder person would be difficult to find and I am extremely pleased and proud to nominate my assistant, my friend and colleague, for Assistant Coach of the Year. 41 OHIO HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION ★ ★ ★ SALUTES ★ ★ ★ 2015 State Tournament Champion Coaches Division I: Head Coach – Tim Held, Moeller High School Career Coaching Experience: 8 yrs. We returned 13 seniors from our 2014 state final four team and they led us from the first day of conditioning with one goal in mind—to be champs. Their focus was to be champs in everything that they did during their day, their week and their season. And they lived it along with our 13 juniors and one sophomore. This group worked together to play a tough schedule, battle adversity, and gel into Moeller’s eighth state championship squad. After losing our first game of the year before travelling to Georgia for a spring break tournament, we went on to win our next 14 games as all facets of our game came together and we played as one. I am blessed to have had those 13 seniors commit themselves to excellence every day we played or practiced and to graduate as state champions. A big thank you goes out to my coaching staff and their commitment to the Moeller baseball program—Andy Nagel, Tony Maccani, Jason Cisper, Mike Maundrell, Marc Marini, Kevin Dusold, Dave Cydrus, Ron Roth, Larry Heinz and Mike Cameron. A bigger thank you goes to my wife, Leslie, and two boys, Drew and Alex for the sacrifices they make to allow me to coach every spring. This team finished 3rd in our league (Western Buckeye League), which was our worst finish since 1996. This made this season very rewarding and special. We had 10 seniors on the team and six of them were full-time players. Each and everyone of those seniors new their role and were major contributors throughout the season. The players were the main reason this team was able to accomplish what they did, but if it wasn’t for our coaching staff this could not have happened. I would like to thank our assistant coaches, Rick Weaver, Braondon Fisher, Bryn Lehman, Justin Sonnenberg, Bryan Flory, Kevin Connor, and Shane Coleman. I would also like to thank my wife Deanne and 3 kids, Chayse, Cassidy, and Calvin for allowing me to spend so much time with our great game of baseball. 42 MOELLER - Division I Champions CONGRATULATIONS DEFIANCE - DIVISION II Champions 43 CANTON CATHOLIC - Division III Champions CONGRATULATIONS NEWARK CATHOLIC - Division IV Champions 44 OHIO HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION ★ ★ ★ SALUTES ★ ★ ★ 2015 State Tournament Champion Coaches Division III: Head Coach—Doug Miller, Canton Central Catholic (26-7) Years Coaching: 34 Career Record: 684-265 Inducted into OHSBCA Hall of Fame: 2006 Program Accomplishments 22 Sectional Titles 12 District Titles: ‘88, ‘97, ‘01, ‘03, ‘04, ‘06, ‘07, ‘08, ‘09, ‘10, ‘11, ‘15 2 Regional Runner-ups: ‘07, ‘10 6 Regional Titles: ‘97, ‘03, ’06, ‘08, ‘11, ‘15 2 State Runner-ups: ‘97, ‘03 3 State Championships: ‘08, ‘11, ‘15 2015 Season Highlights Record: 26-7 Played a schedule that included eight teams that qualified for regional play. Outscored opponents 35-4 in seven tournament games. Had four shutouts in tournament play. Captured the Crusaders third state championship since 2008. We had great leadership from the senior class. This was a “team” on and off of the field. They represented our school, their families, and the community with class and pride. This team trusted in each other and realized they all had a job to do and they did it. It was a group that was good in the classroom as well. We had three outstanding assistant coaches in Dan Massarelli, Brian Beck, and Tyler Weisel. All three of them were great Crusader players and I had the good fortune to coach them. We had great support from our administration, faculty and staff. A special thanks goes out to Father Robert Kaylor, the President and CEO of our school. He has done so much for our school for over 40 years. We had very faithful support from our parents. They all became a family along with the amazing Crusader fan base. Our Booster Club is outstanding and gives great support to all of our athletic programs. I would like to personally thank Jerry Snodgrass and the OHSAA staff along with the staff of the Clippers. They ran a first class tournament, the best anywhere in the country! Division IV Head Coach -- John Cannizzaro, Newark Catholic Career Coaching Experience -- 29 years Number of Years at Newark Catholic -- 20 years 2015 Team Record -- 23-11 Career Record at Newark Catholic -- 446-177 Program Accomplishments: 15 -- Central District Titles 12 -- Regional Championships 2 -- State Semifinalists - 2009, 2011 4 -- State Runnerup Teams - 1987, 2007, 2010, 2014 6 -- State Championships - 1988, 1989, 2004, 2006, 2013, 2015 2015 Season Highlights When I talk about our 2015 season, defense, experience and mental toughness are reasons that helped us win the Division IV State Title. We outscored our 8 tourney opponents 48-7. We committed just four errors in the post-season. We had three pitchers combine on five shutouts and an ERA of 0.83. We did not allow a run in the final 25 innings of our journey. Offensively, we had 10 different batters contribute an RBI. After winning the Central District Tourney we had to escape two classic extra inning wins at Beavers Field in Lancaster. We nipped 9th ranked Paint Valley 2-1 in nine innings, then slipped past top-ranked Berlin Hiland 5-4 in 12 innings. In the Hiland game, the score was 4-4 after the first inning. In our State Tourney wins over second-ranked Ft Recovery (4-0) and Berlin Center Western Reserve (6-0) we played with confidence and maturity to back the pitching efforts of first team All-Ohioans Gabe Morris and Rob Engle. In the final win over Western Reserve, Engle pitched a 3-hitter with 7 strikeouts. The other 14 putouts defensively came via ground balls, popups or tag outs within the infield. I am extremely proud of our 2015 team and how they managed some tough situations along the tourney trail and win our school’s 8th OHSAA Baseball State Championship. 45 THE OFFICIAL TEAM HEADWEAR OF OHIO HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION HEADWEAR MINIMUMS AS LOW AS 18 PIECES ON COR E STYLES SF99, SF97, SF21 & SF7 STANDARD PROGRAM DETAILS 30-DAY PRODUCTION ★ NO SET-UP CHARGES ★ FREE FREIGHT INCREMENTAL QUANTITIES* * O N C E S TA N DA R D M I N I M U M H A S B E E N M E T, A D D I N D I V I D U A L I N C R E M E N T S U P T O 7 1 P I E C E S FINDLAY, OHIO BASED COMPANY PUKKAINC.COM 855.722.5232 46 Fuller Smith Assistant Coach: UT Arlington Email: [email protected] Friday: 3:50-4:35 PM “UTA Hitting System” (Regency Ballroom) Notes: ________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ 47 Greg Lovelady Head Coach: Wright State University Email: [email protected] Friday: 4:40-5:25 PM “Catching Drills, Catching Drills, and more Catching Drills” (Regency Ballroom) A. For the fourth consecutive season Fredericktown won 23 games and winning 20 straight which both are school records. Lead by 6 seniors the team was lead by 2 First Team All Ohio players in Austin Hathaway and Kirk Manns. 6 players received all conference honors along with 4 gaining district honors. Each and every of those seniors played major rolls and contributed to the success of the program. Our teams treated each other with great respect and played to there best abilities. I would like to thank my players, coaching staff, the coaches and players within the MOAC and my wife Mandy for without them our programs wouldn’t have great success. This is a recognition of OHSBCA members, their teams and their players. Numbers of voters for each district are selected based upon membership in our state organization. The voting coaches are scattered throughout the state so that it is the responsibility of each school’s coach to promote his team and its players by contacting these voters before the voting takes place. (See #7 below) Guidelines 1. 32 coaches vote in each division. 2. Coaches must be a member of the OHSBCA to vote, be ranked, or nominate for All-Ohio. 3. Coaches are selected by their district representatives upon completing a voting application. 4. Any head coach who is interested in voting must complete an application and return it to the Poll Director or to his district representative Applications are available on line at www.ohsbca.org. starting in May and ending in September each year. 5. The number of coaches voting in a district will vary, determined by the number of OHSBCA member coaches in their respective district and division. 6. Coaches selected to vote will be notified by their district reps and their names & emails, with hyperlinks will be published on the website. ( www.ohsbca.org under Poll Teams/ Voters 7.
