Reed, Benefits Specialist, Essenture Workplace Benefits As well as honoring the Executive of the Year, we also honor 12 sales and marketing professionals as Distinguished Sales and Marketing Award™ recipients. These leaders have made major contributions to the sales and marketing professions, to their industry, to their place of work and with all those to whom they are connected. As business leaders we know that the world has become more complex. With the challenge of the financial crisis, we have learned to be more creative with our business services. There are leaders among us that we learn from and whose best practices we embrace enthusiastically and with great confidence! As you can imagine, putting on an event such as this is no small task. We thank you for joining us tonight to honor and recognize this year’s outstanding leaders and their achievements, their professional contributions as well as their skill in incorporating leadership traits into all facets of their lives. All of them are outstanding individuals who separate themselves from many others by remaining on target and focused on their personal and organizational goals. This year’s Executive of the Year, Ward J. “Tim” Timken Jr., Chairman, The Timken Company, gives us a perspective on these cornerstones and focus on connectednesshow each of us impacts the other and how reaching out to others can be a recipe for success in today’s business world. Mr. Timken, our Executive of the Year and all 12 of the DSMA™ Award Recipients that are here tonight represent a solid example of why Northeast Ohio is an exciting place to live, work, play and build an active and exciting community. Five Founding Principles ™ ALL SMEI’s activities are guided by five founding principles, designed to strengthen principles and practice of the profession. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Professional Standards and Identification. The improvement of the standards for professional selling, sales management and marketing, in order to establish sales and marketing as a recognized profession. Continuing Education. The planning and implementation of monthly meetings of the membership to enable members to keep up-todate with changes in the marketplace and to grow as professionals. The planning and implementation of organized training programs for professional selling, sales management, and marketing. Sharing Knowledge. The establishment of discussion forums, for example, shirt sleeve seminars, and roundtable meetings which enable members to share sales and marketing experiences and knowledge. Assist Students. The establishment of programs to work with students at the high school and college levels to enable them to understand the excellent career opportunities in the sales and marketing profession. This objective ultimately led to the current SMEI sponsored programs with Junior Achievement, Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), and Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE). "Never set your name to anything that you will ever have cause to be ashamed of." SMEI is the premiere international organization dedicated to providing a forum for knowledge, growth, leadership and connections for the community of sales and marketing professionals. Founded in 1935, SMEI is focused on its Five Founding Principles: Professional Identification and Standards, Continuing Education, Sharing Knowledge, Assisting Students, and Supporting Free Enterprise. Ward J. “Tim” Timken Jr., chairman The Timken Company W Ward J. “Tim” Timken Jr. is chairman of the board of directors of the Timken Company. He was elected to the board in 2002 and later served as vice chairman prior to being named chairman in 2005. Previously, Timken served as president of the company’s Steel Group, leading it to record levels of profitability. In 2000, Timken served as corporate vice president in the Office of the Chairman. Responsible for strategy development, he played a pivotal role in the acquisition and integration of the Torrington Company, by far the largest acquisition in the company’s history. The addition of Torrington doubled the size of the Timken Company and significantly expanded its product breadth and capabilities for friction management and powertrain solutions. His other positions at the company included key postings in Europe and Latin America in the 1990s. While in Europe, he led a team to acquire bearing-making assets in Romania and other regions in Central and Eastern Europe. In Latin America, he was responsible for all operations and sales from Mexico to Argentina. Before joining the Timken Company in 1992, he opened and managed the Washington, D.C., office of McGough & Associates, a Columbus, Ohio-based government affairs consulting firm. Timken holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Georgetown University and an MBA from the Darden School at the University of Virginia. Timken is a member of the board of directors of Pella Corporation. He also serves on several other boards, including the American Iron and Steel Institute of which he is past chairman, the Ohio Business Development Council, the Ohio Business Roundtable Executive Committee, Team NEO, the Stark Development Board, Firestone Country Club, the Henry and Louise Timken Foundation, the Timken Foundation and the Timken Charitable Trust. Carl Albright, president and CEO Shield Manufacturing in 1997 as regional sales manager. He began his sales career in Cleveland, first with Allied-Signal Corp., where he became the company’s youngest district manager in the nation. Later, he was vice president and general manager at Dougherty Lumber Corp. An Akron native and graduate of St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, Anderson has a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Akron and attended the University of Michigan School of Business Management. He is a board member of the Knights of Columbus and active at St. Sebastian Church. He is a trustee of the Arc of Summit and Portage Counties, a 19-year volunteer and trustee for Northern Ohio Golf Charities, and current vice chair of the Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club. InfoCision C Carl Albright, InfoCision president and chief executive officer, oversees all aspects of the company’s day-to-day operations. A 15-year veteran of InfoCision, Albright has served in leadership roles companywide, experience that makes him uniquely qualified to manage the full spectrum of InfoCision’s functions. He joined InfoCision as an assistant call center supervisor and worked his way up. Prior to his current position, he was director of telemarketing, senior vice president of call center operations and chief operating officer. During his tenure, InfoCision has experienced a 10-year average of 14.5 percent annual growth. In that time the company has launched numerous employee benefit programs, added more than 3,000 jobs and opened 24 call centers in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Albright graduated with honors in 1989 from the Ohio State University with degrees in journalism and political science. Jo Bethea, senior sales associate Greater Akron Chamber J Jo Bethea has worked for the Greater Akron Chamber in membership development for the past 10 years. In 2002, the former third-grade teacher received the Bronze Lifetime Achievement Award and in 2004 the Gold Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Association of Chamber Executives (ACCE). For four consecutive years, 2005 to 2008, she has been recognized nationally by ACCE as a top 10 producer in the Circle of Champions, both in dollars and numbers of new sales. Her numerous volunteer activities include 25 years for the Ronald McDonald Charity Golf Classic, Women Against MS, the American Heart Association, Akron Art Museum, St. Thomas Hospital and Walsh Jesuit High School. A native of Pittsburgh, Bethea has a bachelor’s degree in education from Kent State University. John E. Anderson, national sales manager Schield Family Brands; Weather Shield Mfg. / Peachtree Doors & Windows J John E. Anderson, 46, national sales manager for all Schield Family Brands, joined Weather Robert T. Doherty Jr., branch manager Wolff Bros. Supply Inc. - Akron R Robert T. Doherty has been in the wholesale distribution business since 1976, joining Wolff Bros. Supply Inc. as branch manager in 1992. Headquartered in Medina, the company serves the Northern Ohio market at 10 locations as a wholesale distributor of electrical, plumbing and HVAC supplies, power tools and cabinetry. Doherty believes in giving back to the industry, a conviction he demonstrates by serving on the board of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America, Cleveland Section; as board member and past president of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry of Northeast Ohio; board member and past president of the Subcontractors Association of Northeast Ohio; president, Electrical League of Ohio Akron/Canton chapter; and board member, Professional Remodelers of Ohio. Doherty is also a “Career Criminal” for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, having participated in the association’s annual “Lock-up” program since 1999. Jennifer Hajdu senior account executive SummaCare, Inc. Vinceen Davis. She attended St. Vincent -St. Mary High School where she lettered four years playing on the girl’s basketball team. She graduated from the University of Akron with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Following graduation, Hajdu accepted a sales position with SummaCare Health Plan’s Akron office where she worked for eight years. In 2003, she was offered – and accepted – the opportunity to open up the Cleveland market at the SummaCare Cleveland office, where she has worked for five years. Jeff Iula, general manager All-American Soap Box Derby J Jeff Iula has been associated with the All-American Soap Box Derby for more than 50 years, first as a fan, later as a volunteer, and for the last 34 years as a staff member. Over that time, the Derby has grown from 99 competitors in 1975 to a $2 million operation and more than 600 competitors in 2008. The official historian and media liaison, he has helped market the Derby on radio and TV and in newspapers and magazines. He has served as the Derby commentator on national and local TV and radio shows, including ESPN, Wide World of Sports, HBO, the Today Show, National Public Radio and others. A lifelong Cuyahoga Falls resident, Iula attended the University of Akron. Howard Miller Jr., Kraft joined the company in president 1997 as an integrated marketing HRM Enterprises specialist. Two years later, she joined the security division as an electronic security marketing specialist. A Northeast Ohio native, Kraft has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Kent State University. She is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma Honorary Business Fraternity, Women in Security Electronics (WISE) and the National Association Howard Miller Jr. heads HRM of Professional Women. She founded O.E. Strategies in 1999 in her home, offering assessment, test design, leadership development and culture change guidance. Building long-term relationships and evolving her business offerings have led to steady growth. In 2008, she and her team rebranded the company, launched a Web-based development program for managers, became a national firm and expanded the health care sector. Miklos regularly makes professional presentations on aspects of leadership at national conferences. Miklos has supported Berea Children’s Home since 2002 and serves on several volunteer committees. Julie Anne Robbins, executive VP K Katie Rennard has been senior vice president of resource development at United Way of Summit County since September 2003, a position she formerly held at United Way affiliates in Tennessee and Virginia. She also served as president of the Catoosa County Chamber of Commerce in Ringgold, Ga. Rennard has more than 17 years of nonprofit experience with a diversified background in management, resource development, sales and marketing. She has been a member of Kiwanis since 1991, holding several highlevel executive positions for the Akron Club. She has volunteered for Akron Roundtable and Junior Achievement in Ohio, Virginia and Georgia. She is a past member, officer or founder of numerous historical societies and associations, professional women’s organizations, leadership initiatives, and education and scholarship programs. J Julie Anne Robbins joined FirstMerit Corp as retail executive vice president in January 2007. She has more than 20 years in business with more than 10 of those years in banking. Her experience includes retail banking, sales, strategy, finance, real estate development, marketing and operations. Before joining FirstMerit, she served as senior vice president and chief financial officer of retail strategy and development for Washington Mutual in Seattle, Wash. Robbins graduated first in her class from the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University with degrees in finance and economics. She has been very active in various nonprofit and community organizations throughout the United States. She is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma and Phil Beta Kappa organizations and the Health Insurance Association of America. Shawn Beham Exceptional Sales and Marketing Collegiate Award The University of Akron S Shawn Beham earned ranking on the dean’s list while studying sales management and marketing at the University of Akron and working to finance 100 percent of his education. He graduated in 2008 with bachelor’s degree in sales management and a minor in international business. As a student, he held executive positions with Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE), a professional sales and marketing organization. He worked with administrators and faculty to create a recruiting event for PSE that more than doubled the size of the chapter. He raised money for breast cancer research and for Akron Children’s Hospital as a Change Bandit. In 2007-2008 he placed second in the Fisher Institute for Professional Selling Sales Competition during spring semester and was first in his class. That same year, he worked as an intern for Stanley Staffing, providing external staffing services for Fortune 500 companies across the United States. His membership in the Akron Affiliate of Sales and Marketing Executives International spans over 41 years. He has served as Master of Ceremonies for the Annual DSMA™ Accent on Excellence Event for the past 37 years, served 3 terms as President and was elected to eight 2-year terms on the SMEI Akron Board. President of the Butler Group, Jim is a training consultant in sales, sales management and communication skills. In addition to conducting seminars in public speaking and listening skills, he serves as Master of Ceremonies for a variety of organizations and clubs. He is also a guest speaker at numerous management seminars and symposiums. Jim Butler has been the "Voice of Akron", President of Toastmasters, and President of The Fairlawn Chamber of Commerce. But many in the business, seeing the need for professional recognition based on sound standards and ethical practices, created Sales Managers’ Clubs. First started in the 1880s in North America, they gradually spread throughout Europe, Australian, South American and the Pacific Rim. From them emerged SMEI. In 1935, IBM Founder Thomas Watson Sr.; Raymond Bill, founder of Sales and Marketing Management Magazine, and other visionaries invited the presidents of many Sales Managers’ Clubs to New York City to discuss forming a network of sales and marketing executives. The result was the National Federation of Sales Executives, the first of several names for SMEI.
