As well as honoring the Executive of the Year, we also
honor 12 sales and marketing professionals as
Distinguished Sales and Marketing Award™ recipients.
These leaders have made major contributions to the sales
and marketing professions, to their industry, to their place
of work and with all those to whom they are connected.
As business leaders we know that the world has
become more complex. With the challenge of the financial
crisis, we have learned to be more creative with our business services. There are leaders among us that we learn
from and whose best practices we embrace enthusiastically
and with great confidence!
As you can imagine, putting on an event such as this is
no small task. To the committee and those who work
behind the scenes to make this event successful, we give
you all our thanks.
The Akron Affiliate of Sales and Marketing Executives
International (SMEI Akron) celebrates outstanding leadership here tonight. We thank you for joining us tonight to
honor and recognize this year’s outstanding leaders and
their achievements, their professional contributions as well
as their skill in incorporating leadership traits into all facets
of their lives. All of them are outstanding individuals who
separate themselves from many others by remaining on target and focused on their personal and organizational goals.
To Sue Warren, CSE, SMEI Akron’s Executive Director
and driving force, we say “Thank you!” The belief she has
in SMEI Akron shows in the long hours she invests in this
event and in her dedication and hard work year-round.
We recognize and appreciate the help of our presenting
sponsor, the Akron Beacon Journal/ohio.com, our radio
sponsor, WAKR and our media partner Inside Business
Magazine.
When we consider the cornerstone of great leadership
represented by this year’s award recipients, we focus on
their integrity, commitment, lifelong learning pursuits,
adaptability, motivation, team-building skills, passion and
persistence. This year’s Executive of the Year, Ward J. “Tim”
Timken Jr., Chairman, The Timken Company, gives us a perspective on these cornerstones and focus on connectednesshow each of us impacts the other and how reaching out to
others can be a recipe for success in today’s business world.
Mr. Timken, our Executive of the Year and all 12 of the
DSMA™ Award Recipients that are here tonight represent a
solid example of why Northeast Ohio is an exciting place to
live, work, play and build an active and exciting
community.
Five Founding Principles ™
ALL SMEI’s activities are guided by five founding principles, designed to strengthen principles and practice of the profession.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Professional Standards and Identification. The improvement of the standards for professional selling, sales management and marketing, in order to establish sales and marketing as a recognized profession.
Continuing Education. The planning and implementation of monthly meetings of the membership to enable members to keep up-todate with changes in the marketplace and to grow as professionals. The planning and implementation of organized training programs
for professional selling, sales management, and marketing.
Sharing Knowledge. The establishment of discussion forums, for example, shirt sleeve seminars, and roundtable meetings which
enable members to share sales and marketing experiences and knowledge.
Assist Students. The establishment of programs to work with students at the high school and college levels to enable them to understand the excellent career opportunities in the sales and marketing profession. This objective ultimately led to the current SMEI sponsored programs with Junior Achievement, Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), and Pi Sigma Epsilon (PSE).
Support the Free Enterprise System. In recognizing that sales and marketing is the energizing force that drives the competitive marketplace, SMEI has always been committed to supporting the free enterprise concept.

2009 EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR
TIM TIMKEN
SHARES
HIS WISDOM
What contributed to
your success?
“I attribute much of
my personal success
to a strong upbringing, a good education, a diverse set of
life and work experiences and a little bit
of luck.”
What are your philosophies on leadership?
“I like to go with the
tried and true concept of picking the
right people for the
job and then getting
out of their way.”

History of Sales & Marketing Executives International
We’ve come a long way since the late 1880s, when sales and marketing was not popularly considered to be an attractive career or a profession. But
many in the business, seeing the need for professional recognition based on sound standards and ethical practices, created Sales Managers’ Clubs. First
started in the 1880s in North America, they gradually spread throughout Europe, Australian, South American and the Pacific Rim.
From them emerged SMEI. In 1935, IBM Founder Thomas Watson Sr.; Raymond Bill, founder of Sales and Marketing Management Magazine, and
other visionaries invited the presidents of many Sales Managers’ Clubs to New York City to discuss forming a network of sales and marketing executives. The result was the National Federation of Sales Executives, the first of several names for SMEI.
The Akron affiliate was chartered in 1968 and has a strong membership!
