Pig Dissection Reproductive Anatomy Fall 2008 Human Female Anatomy Human Female Anatomy Female Reproductive Structure and Function • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 5. Ovaries Two, pelvic cavity Produce hormones, eggs (ova) 4. Fallopian Tubes (oviducts) Tubes, transport ovum, site of fertilization Can get blocked; Permanent birth control = tubal ligation Ectopic Pregnancy 3. Uterus Womb, 3 in. long, placenta develops here 2. Cervix Opening into uterus, must dilate for birth 1. Vagina Tube, 3 – 4 inches Birth canal, receives male penis Female Reproductive Cancer Sites • • • • • • • • Ovarian, uterine, cervical May require hysterectomy Causes? Multiple sexual partners can increase risk HPV virus – risk of cervical Herpes virus – risk of uterine Tests? Pelvic Exam, Pap smear HPV • Human Papilloma Virus • Genital Warts Cervical Cancer • Gardasil Female Human vs. Pig Anatomy • • • • • • • • Pig has bihorned uterus Two uterine horns fuse into uterine body Human - 3 separate openings Vagina, urethra, anus Pig only two Anus, combo vagina/urethra Pig urethra fuses with vagina to form urogenital sinus Opens to the outside via the urogenital orifice (opening) Female Pig Anatomy Human Male Anatomy Human Male Anatomy Male Reproductive Structure and Function • 1. Testes • Produce hormones, sperm • Two, develop in pelvic cavity, drop into scrotum by passing through a hole (ring) inguinal ring in inguinal ligament • Inguinal ligament stretches across pubic bone to top of pelvis • Spermatic Cord suspends testes in scrotum; contains artery, vein, nerve • Epididymis – sac on top of testes, where sperm gain flagellum • 2. Scrotum • Holds testes • Why suspended in scrotum? • 3. Vas Deferens • Tube, about 12 inches • Carries sperm from testes up into body to urethra • Cut in a vasectomy • 7. Urethra • Tube that carries urine out bladder into penis • Vas deferens empty into this • Also carries semen • Semen = liquid in which sperm swim • • • • • • • • • • • • • 5. Prostate Gland Wraps around posterior urethra Lies on top of rectum Adds fructose and alkaline fluid to semen Why? 4. Seminal Vesicles Two, lie close to urethra, below prostate Also add fructose and alkaline fluid to semen 6. Cowper’s Glands Also called Bulbourethral glands Lie close to urethra Secrete lubricating fluid called Pre ejaculate Usually occurs prior to ejaculation when male is aroused • Can contain sperm and impregnate a female • • • • 8. Penis Contains urethra Can release urine and semen Places semen in female Male Reproductive Cancer Sites • • • • • Testes Prostate Tests? Prostate Exam Rectal and Blood test Hernias Hernia = rupture of weakened body wall, usually in abdominal area; intestines can protrude through it Inguinal Hernia Usually requires surgical repair Male Human vs. Pig Anatomy • Main difference is penis • Human hangs between legs • Pig/Quadrapeds – curves upward just under abdominal skin to exit through urogenital orifice just inferior to umbilicus Male Pig Anatomy
