O R G AVID Gives Wings to Falcons and Welcomes New Students to the Nest INSIDE THIS ISSUE: Support All Students Donors 2 PALS Healthy Living Week Athle c Physicals Night ‐ June 2 3 2015‐16 Auc It’s a busy time of year for Rosa Velazquez and the AVID students. Just as our juniors and seniors are getting ready to fly, here come the 8th graders. Last month, 25 AVID students field tripped down to the NACAC College Fair at the San Diego Convention Center to collect literature and speak with representatives from over 100 schools nationwide. “This is a great opportunity for these kids to be exposed to schools and programs from across the country,” states Velazquez. on Supporters 4 VIP Grad Seats 5 2015‐16 SAS Donors (cont.) 6 2016 Auc on Supp. (cpnt.) Important dates 7 After the college fair downtown, the students toured the SDSU campus. Back at TPHS, the AVID classes welcomed 20 EWMS 8th graders to campus. These are students who are enrolled in a college readiness pathway and who truly benefit from the mentoring of our current AVID students. They visited several departments and classrooms campus wide while competing with other teams in a themed scavenger hunt which helps them get excited for high school while getting familiar with campus. For more information on the AVID program and other ways the Foundation SUPPORTS ALL STUDENTS on campus, visit tphs.net or torreypinesfoundation.org. Please see page 5 for photos. Grad nite 2016 AVID & Teacher Lunch photos AVID is a SUPPORT ALL STUDENTS program funded by parent and community donations through the TPHS Foundation. This program assists low income students, Falcons who are often the first in their families to attend college, as well as B and C students in the middle who need additional support and/or tutoring throughout the school day. “It is great to see my students in a college environment knowing they have the confidence and skill set necessary to succeed there”, beams Velazquez. “Programs like AVID really open doors for so many young adults at TPHS and beyond.” 8 Support All Students Levels 9 Pathway of Pride Pavers info 10 Mailing: P.O. Box 2489 Del Mar, CA 92014 Phone: (858) 793‐3551 Fax: Attention, senior parents! The early bird discount for Grad Nite expires on May 31st. This event and the graduation leis will sell out. Don’t let your graduate miss out on this once in a lifetime event! Last day to register is June 9. Studies have shown that postgraduation events like this save lives by providing a fun and safe alternative to other celebrations. There will be food, games, music and entertainment and wonderful memories are made. High school graduation is statistically a dangerous night and attending a chaperoned all-night event keeps kids safer than if they were out and about for the night on their own. This is a chaperoned alcohol free and drug free event organized by the TPHS Foundation and will be held at a nearby San Diego facility. WE STILL NEED PARENT VOLUNTEERS for this event. If you would like to help with graduate check in at the TPHS gym or would like to attend the event as an all-night chaperone, email [email protected] or call the office at (858) 793– 3551 to sign up! Thank you in advance for your support and participation in this fun and worthwhile night! ALL Torrey Pines athletes for ALL TPHS sports for the 2016-17 school year are invited to attend. “This night is offered as a convenience to our Falcon families and is a great opportunity to obtain a low cost physical and get the necessary paperwork out of the way long before next year’s season deadlines,” states Christina Scherr, TPHS Athletic Trainer. “We bring in licensed medical practitioners to evaluate our athletes to make sure they can safely participate in the wide range of sports TPHS has to offer.” For a $25 donation, students receive an athletic physical by a physician and can turn in their forms at the same time. Proceeds from the evening benefit the TPHS General Athletic Fund which supports facilities, staffing, administrative and other needs in Athletics as they arise throughout the year. “We are still in need of both licensed medical and nonmedical volunteers to help with evaluations, paperwork, crowd control, and directing students to make the evening run efficiently and smoothly,” continues Scherr. “Physicals Night is a fast paced event and it is always fun to see so many of our great student athletes on campus.” Anyone who is able to help should contact Holly Coughlin, TPHS Volunteer Coordinator, in the Foundation office at [email protected] or call the office at 858.794.3551 to sign up. Please visit www.tphs.net PRIOR TO JUNE 2ND and click on the Athletics tab to complete online clearance and download and print the Physical Exam form. Be sure to thoroughly read over and complete all applicable sections before heading over that night and be certain ALL the forms are signed by a parent or guardian where indicated. Bring the completed forms and $25 cash or check made out to TPHSF with you. 3 P A G E 4 Online auction supporters Thanks to the following individuals and companies who supported our annual Online Auc on.
