CAREgiver CLEARWATER FREE CLINIC SPRING 2014 Providing care for uninsured families ... AFFORDABLE CARE ACT & THE CFC Minding the Gap in Coverage Many people assume that with the enactment of the Affordable Care Act all uninsured (Clearwater Free Clinic patients), are covered with affordable options. Some may possibly think that there will not be a need for Clinic services in the future… the fact is… this is simply not the case…not at all! building healthy communities Right now in Florida, most low income adults fall into a “coverage gap” - unable to get coverage under Florida’s current limited Medicaid program or to get help paying for insurance in the new Marketplace Are you a U.S. citizen between the ages of 19 and 64? Is your income below $1,321/month for an individual or $1,784/month for a family of two? (add $462 for each household member) The truth is, even with the role out of the ACA, the Clearwater Free Clinic has not experienced any changes in either the number of new patients seeking medical care or the decline in existing patients. The Clinic continues to average 75 new patients per month. Example: Anyone, whose salary is below $1,321.00 per month for an individual or $1,784 per month for a family of two falls into the doughnut shortfall or coverage gap…no access to coverage or affordable care… except at the Clearwater Free Clinic Are you uninsured? CURRENT MEDICAID COVERAGE IN FLORIDA “It is a myth that the Affordable Care Act provides universal coverage. In fact, there is still a growing need for Free Clinics like the CFC,” says Mark Cruise, interim Executive Director of the Florida Association of Free and Charitable Clinics. Very poor parents As the Affordable Care Act takes effect, the demand for Clinic services most likely will not diminish but possibly increase. The Clearwater Free Clinic will continue to rely on the support of our generous community. Together we will build a healthier community. Children CFC SUCCESS STORY Getting Healthy and Getting Back to Work Tracy moved to Tampa Bay when he was 6 years old and has called this area home ever since. A little over two years ago, Tracy was supporting his family as an assistant produce manager at a local Publix Super Market when his health took a major downward turn. He suffered a heart attack and was also diagnosed with a seizure disorder. Tracy’s health issues forced him to leave the job he had held for 30 years and required his wife to become the family’s bread winner. Unfortunately, with the loss of his job came the loss of their family’s health insurance. Tracy’s wife’s salary wasn’t enough to allow for private health insurance but too much to allow for government assistance like County Social HELP GETTING COVERAGE IN THE MARKETPLACE Tax credits Pregnant woman Cost sharing Elderly/disabled COVERAGE GAP reductions Services or Medicaid. In and out of the hospital and desperate for some sort of help Tracy found the Clearwater Free Clinic. He was able to register as a patient and be seen by a doctor the same day. The CFC has provided Tracy with services, referrals and medications he otherwise could not afford. “My medication bill alone would cost us $2,500 a month and there is no way I could afford that.” Thanks to the CFC, Tracy was able to start working again this past August. His health insurance will soon take effect and he will no longer need the services of the Clinic. “The CFC has become like family to me. I don’t know everyone’s name but I know their smiles and their warm greetings. Everyone is so willing to help and no one treats me like I am just a poor person.” He and his wife celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary in January. There are countless patients that aren’t able to afford care on their own but don’t qualify for Medicaid or county services and otherwise would be in and out of the hospital, unable to work because of their health. Success stories like Tracy’s are what make the Clearwater Free Clinic a vital part of our community. Jim, originally from Jacksonville, graduated from the University of Florida and now lives in Palm Harbor with his wife of 24 years and two sons, 11 and 8 years old. Jim is the Vice President of Business Development for PNC Bank and brings with him expertise in the finance field. He learned of the Clinic through a former board member and long time Clinic supporter, Brian Gunderson and has played in the CFC Charity Golf Tournament for a number of years. “I get personal satisfaction from doing something that is of value to my community. As a board member, it gives me a chance to better understand the work and mission of the clinic, and finally it fuels my admiration for the work the staff does for their patients.” The CFC is grateful to volunteers like Jim who take the time to further our mission and help build a healthier community. “I am honored to be asked to serve as a Board Member of the Clearwater Free Clinic. Its mission is one that I believe in and I look forward to contributing in any way possible, along with the all the other outstanding Board members. I cannot think of a better way to start the year than “Martinis & Matisse”. As they say, “It takes a community to raise a child”. This is certainly true in the support of the Clearw ater Free Clinic. It is absolutely amazing the amount of Community support shown in making “Martinis & Matisse” one of the most prolific fundraisers in Tampa Bay. THANK YOU… to all our artists, restaurants, sponsors, Frank & Brenda Crum, and last but not least our awesome committee & volunteers for making this event a success. With your support, this event raised close to 25% of our Opera ting Budget. Our patients will be the beneficiaries of your generous support…. The support for the Clearwater Free Clinic does not end with “Martinis & Matisse”. Our community supports our efforts all year long. We are so thankful for Morton Plant Hospital, our volunte er physicians, our administrative volunteers, our staff, and last but not least our donors. Without everyone’s support we would not be able to provide caring, compassionate healthcare to those in need. On behalf of everyone associated with the Clearwater Free Clinic…THAN K YOU ALL! As the need for our programs increase, we need to be a more efficient organization to handle this demand withou t sacrificing quality. In an effort to “Up our Game” as an organization, the Board of Directors of the Clearwater Free Clinic have worked very hard in establishing a long-range Strategic Plan looking into the future of healthc are needs in our community. Mental Health, Diabetes treatm ent, Obesity, and Smoking Cessation are just a few areas we intend to focus our efforts. In addition, our board has just implemented new “Ends” based Governance Policies that have shifted our efforts from a “Top Down” to a “Results Up” approach. This shift in direction will enable us as an organization to focus on an “Ends/Results” orienta tion, in which making a difference in the health of our community is our primar y focus. In addition, measureable metrics will be in place to monitor our ongoing programs as to their success and long-term effect in our patients’ lives. The future is bright, yet challenging for the Clearwater Free Clinic. With the uncertainty of healthcare affordability and availability, the need for our services has been unaffected by the new ACA. Coverage gaps, complex eligibility requirements, and even affordability questions make healthcare for our patients difficult at best. One thing is certain, any qualified patient that is treated at the Clearwater Free Clinic will be treated with dignity, compassion and professionalism. The healthcare battle is long and expensive. WE NEED YOUR HELP. When making your plans to volunteer or donate to an organization, please consider the Clearwater Free Clinic. It is only through your help and support that we can sustain our mission today and in the future. Sincerely, Bruce Livingston CFC Board President Looking for a fun and meaningful volunteer opportunity with flexible hours? Share your time and talent with the Clearwater Free Clinic! A registered nurse, Susan began volunteering at the Clinic 15 years ago when her children were in school and she wanted to use her nursing degree to help. “I really like volunteering at the Clinic. It keeps me connected to the community. When I’m volunteering, it’s easy to see the positive impact of the Clinic and why it is needed. Seeing people benefit from our services is what keeps me coming back,” Susan says. Susan not only volunteers at the clinic, she serves on the board of directors and has chaired Martinis & Matisse for the past 3 years. Six months of the year, Susan spends her time planning and organizing the Clinic’s signature fundraising event, which is responsible for a significant portion of the operating budget. From coordinating artists, soliciting sponsors to heading up a large committee, she has done it all and is always happy to step up and do more. “I love being part of Martinis and Matisse.” It’s gratifying to know that I have a job that is meaningful and directly supports the Clinic’s programs. The Clinic helps hard working people who are unable to afford health insurance maintain their health and keep their jobs. Volunteering there has become a part of my life and gives me purpose.” The Clearwater Free Clinic is sincerely grateful to Susan and our many wonderful volunteers who continue to generously contribute a wide variety of talent and skills. The combined hours of our volunteer professionals, fundraising committees and board members help ensure the Clinic is able to continue service to the community. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Margaret Mead The volunteers of the Clearwater Free Clinic are truly the heart of our organization. Without their kind hearts and assistance, the Clinic could not function. At the Clinic’s annual volunteer luncheon, these wonderful people are recognized and celebrated for their extraordinary accomplishments. Is it one of the ways the CFC board and staff are able to demonstrate how much the volunteers are valued and appreciated for their service to the uninsured families living in our community.
