Med West Press an employee & physician centered publication of medical west vol 5 issue 6 2014 03.17.14 a letter from keith pennington features Many of you might have noticed major construction off Highway 150 in Hoover over the past several weeks. This site will be the future home of the Medical West Freestanding Emergency Department (FED). We are very excited for this growth and opportunity to further serve the Hoover community. pg. 2 The Medical West FED will be part of a larger development to be known as the The Shoppes of Hoover. The mixed-use center will include retail space and a neighborhood grocery store called Sprouts offering farmfresh produce and natural, organic foods, will anchor the development. pg. 6 As discussed at our previous Town Hall meeting, construction on our FED is scheduled to begin this summer. Our family of Medical West Emergency physicians will expand their services to the facility. The building itself will be approximately 19,804 square plus an additional 985 square feet of shelled space for future expansion. Key elements of the FED will be: • • • 12 exam rooms CT X-Ray • • • Ultrasound EKG Shelled space for future expansion In addition to the Emergency Department, there will also be clinic space that is approximately 2,700 square feet with 8 exam rooms. The FED is expected to open in the Summer of 2015. We anticipate 30 - 40 visits per day and 12,000- 15,000 visits per year. We are so proud to be part of a growing hospital with great employees and look forward to this new adventure. We will continue to keep you updated on the progress of this new facility, as well as other exciting things happening at Medical West. Thanks for all you do, Keith Pennington, CEO and President YOUR HEALTH Scale Back Alabama: Health Tip Week 8 MEET YOUR CO-WORKERS Cotrell Nalls, Food Services pg. 9 SCALE BACK ALABAMA UPDATE This Week’s Events your health healthtip week8 “Healthy Outdoor Activites” Botanical Gardens Have you ever wanted to get away for the weekend or have a family event that’s not indoors? Since you live in Alabama, you have that opportunity! Alabama offers twenty-two million acres of outdoors throughout the state with healthy activities for all ages. Our state has four national forests, seven national parks and twenty-two state parks with activities that will keep you healthy! To find a state park or national forest close to you visit www.alapark.com or www.alabama.travel. Look for local areas in your city or county that offer outdoor activities or check with local officials. Get out and explore all the outdoor activities this beautiful state has to offer! Biking Biking is a great physical activity that works your entire body. It increases your muscle tone, builds up stamina, burns calories, and is good for your heart. There are over 100 miles of bike trails found in nine state parks throughout Alabama. To find a wheelchair accessible trail in the state of Alabama, please visit www.traillink.com Hiking & Camping Hiking and camping are two of the most common activities to do outdoors. Alabama’s state parks provide 200 miles of trails and more than 100 campgrounds throughout the state. There are a number of different botanical gardens throughout the state of Alabama. If you enjoy beautiful flowers and different types of plants, get out and be active around these amazing gardens. Paddling & Rafting Paddling and rafting are activities that really work your upper body and are good for your heart. The Alabama State River Trail starts at the Georgia line and runs 631 miles through the state. It is the longest water trail in a single state. Rock Climbing With Alabama being located at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, it offers many locations that are great for rock climbing. One example is Horse Pens 40. Having both fresh water lakes and rivers, along with salt water at the gulf, you won’t have to go a long way to fish. Just be sure to grill the fish you catch instead of frying it! For healthy fish recipes, visit www. sparkrecipes.com. (Source: www.scalebackalabama.com) Important Reminders: Parking & Cell Phone Usage Employee Parking There appears to be a need to clarify the designated parking lots. The Green and Yellow lots, including the lot located next to the Cafeteria entrance, are for our patients and visitors only. There are three employee parking areas, Lot A, B, and I. Please see the map below of the designated employee lots as a reference. In addition to these lots, employees may park in the parking deck, except for level three – which is clearly marked for patients and visitors. Employees found to be violating the parking guidelines, will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination. Please remember that as a healthcare provider, we have an obligation to provide our patients and visitors with quality service. Providing easy accessibility to our services is the first step in providing quality healthcare in an environment focused on our patients and others who visit our hospital. Cell Phone Usage We have had an increase in the number of complaints related to employees using personal cell phones during designated work times and in designated work areas. As per the policy stated in the handbook, employees are expected to use personal cell phones only during non-work times, such as meal or rest breaks, and in non-work areas. The use of personal cell phones for personal reasons must never cause a delay in responding to a patient or visitor and should never be used when assisting a patient or visitor. While attending to a patient or visitor, employees are prohibited from responding or making a cell phone call, sending a text message, checking electronic email or social media sites. All personal cell phones must be carried in a safe and concealed area that does not interfere with the physical requirements of the job, will not fall off or cause others to be distracted by the presence or appearance of the device. Ear attachments or earphones are not to be worn except during non-work times and in non-work areas. Additionally, the use of camera equipped cell phones to take photographs while at work is prohibited as a preventative step to protect the privacy of our patients.
