STUDENT SPEAKER
Ms. Emily Bjanes
Bachelor of Science, Kinesiology
Born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania to a homeschooling family, Ms.
Bjanes grew up learning in a unique
educational environment before
transitioning to a public high school
in her hometown of Lititz. She chose
the University of Maryland because
of its exceptional kinesiology program
and the wide array of extracurricular
opportunities.
At UMD, Ms. Bjanes dedicated
her time to academic studies while
simultaneously representing the School of Public Health by advocating
for a substance-free lifestyle in local Maryland schools with the Gymkana troupe. She served as the secretary and staging coordinator for this
gymnastics and acrobatics team. Additionally, she is a member of the
Phi Alpha Epsilon School of Public Health honorary society; a member
of the leadership committee for OneU (a campus Christian ministry);
and an intern at Maximum Performance Physical Therapy and Doctors
Community Hospital where she helps patients regain strength and mobility through physical therapy.
Ms. Bjanes was honored to serve as the undergraduate representative
on the School of Public Health Dean Search Committee, and she was
recognized by Dean Clark with the 2016 School of Public Health Dean’s
Scholar Award. Ms. Bjanes will pursue a doctorate of physical therapy at
the University of Pittsburgh beginning June 1.
