The original Atelier, founded by Richard Lack in 1970 as a not for profit corporation, has based its aesthetic philosophy on a direct lineage to the Boston
school of American Impressionists and the French Academy. The Atelier, co-directed by Dale Redpath and Cyd Wicker, closely follows these original
precepts offering students the opportunity to master the fundamental principles in the classical discipline of realistic drawing and painting. In all of
The Atelier’s classes, emphasis is placed on developing the student’s ability to accurately observe proportions and value relationships. Some instruction is
given to the class as a whole, but most instruction is given on an individual basis. The Atelier pursues a non-discriminatory policy and is open to all eligible students
regardless of race, creed, color, gender, sexual orientation or national origin.

CLASSES
Students begin by drawing a plaster cast or still life in
charcoal, developing their ability to render accurate

they are introduced to the fundamentals of oil and/or

Students paint a new oil study each week working from the figure. With steady
guidance from the instructor, the students will work to achieve a complete
figure, starting by drawing in thin paint and striving for accuracy in proportion,
value and color. Depending on the level of experience, the student will work in

GESTURAL FIGURE STUDY
Gain a better understanding of gesture of the figure. This class will mesh The
Atelier and Studio Arts figure study methods. Students will explore what gesture
is and ways to capture it through quick poses, progressively longer poses,
and experimentation. For first class bring 18”x24” Rough
Newsprint Pad, 2 Large Binder Clips. Additional materials to
be purchased from The Atelier store: drawing board, pack of
Medium Vine Charcoal, pack of Soft Vine Charcoal, kneaded
eraser, plumbline, sanding board. Additional materials

Life drawing is at the core of any serious program of fine
arts. In the class, students draw from the figure in pencil.
Each drawing is created over a period of several sessions,
developing the student’s eye for accurate proportions, gesture
and anatomy.

With a single sustained pose, students will have the option of either taking one
drawing/painting to a high degree of finish or completing several drawings
from different positions around the model.

PLEIN-AIR OIL LANDSCAPE*
This class is designed for students at all skill levels. The first session will begin
with a painting demonstration after which the students will do a quick sketch of
their own. Composition, value relationships and color mixing are stressed.

PLEIN-AIR WATERCOLOR LANDSCAPE*
This class is for beginning and intermediate students.
The main focus is on drawing, composition, value
relationships and color mixing. Demonstrations and
critiques are given at each session. You will learn to
paint clouds, trees flowers, etc.

PORTRAIT & INTERIOR
Students draw in charcoal and may progress to oil or pastels. The portrait model
will be set within an interior. Advanced students can take advantage of the
entire composition. Capturing the likeness is emphasized. Color and techniques
in oil and pastel are covered.

ILLUSTRATION
Let your imagination fly! During this class,
students will develop imaginative pieces based
upon a classic or favorite story. We will move
from idea generation to preparatory work
and on to a final illustration. Emphasis will
be placed on composition, and storytelling.
Students may choose to work in the medium
with which they are comfortable. Christine
has experience to support watercolor, colored
pencil, pen and ink, or oil paint.

Dale Redpath’s search for a technical language
that would allow the painting of her world and
envisioned ideas brought her to study with
Richard Lack at Atelier Lack in Minneapolis. Her
studies in these artistic methods have continued at
museums across the U.S. and in Europe. Redpath’s
work has appeared in shows throughout the U.S.
and is represented in private collections in North
America and Europe. In addition to painting, she
has been teaching at Atelier Lack since 1983 and
in 1992 became a co-director of The Atelier. She
maintains a studio in St. Paul. Her work can also
be seen at www.DaleRedpath.com.
Cyd Wicker attended West Texas State University
in Canyon, Texas and Yale University School
of Music and Art in Connecticut. She was
also awarded an internship with the National
Collection of Fine Arts, Smithsonian Institute
in Washington, D.C. She studied with Richard
Lack for five years and then taught with him
from 1983 until his retirement in 1992. She has
painted commissioned presidential portraits of
Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton
for the Presidential Museum in Odessa, Texas.
Her work hangs in private and public collections
including Hennepin County Medical Research
Center, the Federal Court Buildings in St. Paul and
Minneapolis, the Judicial Center in St. Paul and the
University of St. Thomas. Cyd is co-director of The
Atelier and teaches in the full time program. Her
work can also be seen at www.CydWicker.com.
Judy Buckvold completed five years of full time
training in classical realism at The Atelier. She
attended the University of Minnesota in Duluth,
before joining the art department at Dayton’s in
Minneapolis. In Boston, she worked at Jordan
Marsh in retail fashion. In New England her
interest grew in portraiture and oil painting as a
medium. She believes that technology is limited
when it comes to expressing the human spirit, and
that there will always be a need for fine art and
tradition.
Brian Lewis majored in studio art and art
history at the University of Minnesota prior to
studying painting with Richard Lack. He currently
teaches Basic Drawing and Painting at The Atelier
in addition to maintaining his own studio in
Minneapolis. Brian’s interests include portraiture,
figurative work, still life and landscape. He is
a Guild Member of the American Society of
Classical Realism and exhibits in its salon, as well
as in galleries in Minnesota, Colorado and New
Mexico.
Laura Tundel received her bachelor’s degree
in Fine Art and Communication Design from
Wartburg College in Waverly, IA. After college,
she worked as a graphic designer and illustrator
for several years before learning of the classical
art training at The Atelier Studio Program of
Fine Art. Laura completed her four years of fulltime study at The Atelier and is now focusing on
portrait commissions and still life paintings. She is
currently living in Minneapolis. More of her work

Landscape: Easel: French or metal easel. Paints: Thio violet
(Grumbacher) or alizarin crimson, French ultramarine or ultramarine
blue, cadmium lemon, cadmium yellow, cadmium orange, cadmium red
deep, white (flake, titanium, mixed or Permalba). Unless otherwise stated
Winsor & Newton and Rembrandt paints are good. Brushes: Filberts &
rounds in a bristle, 1 or 2 of each size (#2, #4 & #6). Panels: Canvas panels
or untempered masonite with 2-3 coats of gesso in sizes 8 x 10 and 9
x 12. Misc.: Palette cups, rags, paper towels, Liquin, viewfinder (2 L’s),
turpentine, palette knife, and a plastic bag for trash. Notepad for first
class. Optional: Bug spray, large brimmed hat or cap, sunscreen, umbrella
to attach to easel box or freestanding with pole and stakes (for sun).

Outdoor painting offers
an amazing experience
of light, color and
atmosphere, but doesn’t
spare us at all in problems
and challenges. Favoring
intermediate through
advanced levels, we will
dive straight into issues
and solutions including
ways of working under
rapidly changing light conditions, advanced composition,
transposition and illusions of color and value, white balance
and atmospheric tonalities. The weekend intensive class
will favor longer midday light compositions while the
weekly class will go after the challenges of beautiful but
rapidly changing early evening light. All media welcome.

this 5 half-day workshop.
We’ll work to develop a strong
drawing for an imaginative
piece based upon an existing
story or your own idea.
Topics covered will include
composition, brainstorming,
thumbnails, research, sketch
development, and studies for
value and color. Emphasis will
be placed on composition,
and storytelling. For the
first class please bring a
sketchbook, and your preferred drawing tools. If you have
a laptop or other device with internet access, bring that too
for reference research. If you have a specific project in mind,

NEW INSTRUCTOR: Kenneth Schweiger was born in
Saint Paul, Minnesota, and graduated from DePaul University
in Chicago, IL. After traveling to Japan and studying classical
and contemporary works of art in Tokyo, Kenneth returned to
Minneapolis. This May he will complete 5 years of intensive
drawing and painting at the Atelier. “My goal in teaching the
basic drawing class is to logically analyze the visual world and
break it down into shapes, values, and edges.”
NEW INSTRUCTOR: Jake Posey grew up in Fargo, North
Dakota. After completing high school in 2011, he moved to
Minneapolis to study the practice of representational painting
at The Atelier. Jake’s lifelong passion for visual beauty coupled
with five years of intense training and critical observation in
an atelier system has given him the tools and vocabulary to
break the visual world down into measurable properties and
the ability to share that knowledge with those who desire to
learn it. His compositions attempt to unite the personal and
universal, and promote empathy.
Christine Mitzuk
earned her bachelor’s degree in Design
Communication with a minor in Studio Arts from the
University of Minnesota. She worked in Graphic Design
for over seven years, making art in her spare time. Realizing
she desired art more, she quit her job to attend the full time
program at The Atelier. She completed 5 years of study in May
2011. Christine’s focus is narrative based imaginative art. She
feeds her imagination through continued study of the figure
and nature. She accepts commissions for illustration, portrait,

CeCeile Hartleib
is a Realist/Impressionist painter.
Originally from Ohio, where she began her training with
Allan R. Banks, CeCeile relocated to Minnesota and studied
for four years at Atelier LeSueur. This was followed by an
additional year of advanced study with Stephen Gjertson.
She has taught numerous classes and workshops at Atelier
North, Edina Art Center, Minnetonka Center for the Arts
and currently teaches at The Atelier. She is a member of
Oil Painters of America, Midwest Watercolor Society,
Minnesota Watercolor Society, American Impressionist
Society, and the Outdoor Painters of Minnesota. Her work
hangs in galleries in Minnesota and Ohio and in corporate and
private collections internationally.
Stephan Orsak
balances parallel careers as performing
violinist and visual artist, and has been a teacher/pedagogue
in both streams. Portfolio work includes paintings, drawings,
graphic scores, architecture, landscape architecture, sculpture
and murals. A wide-ranging visual education has included
work with Prix de Rome painter Arthur Osver (Washington
University), Richard Lack at Atelier Lack, and work at Harvard
Graduate School of Design. With past teaching appointments
at three universities, guest teaching internationally, and locally
honored as Outstanding Teacher at MacPhail Center for the
Arts, his emphasis now is concentrated on a new body of studio

Pat Schu
is a Minnesota native who currently lives in
Plymouth. Her early years were spent raising her three
children, and building a career in the financial services
industry. Occasional art classes nurtured her love of drawing
and painting during those years. The opportunity to pursue art
more seriously became a reality when Pat chose early retirement
in 2006. She immediately began her studies at The Atelier and
completed the full-time program in 2010. Embracing a range of
subjects, Pat’s paintings include figures, portraits, landscapes,
and still lifes. Her artwork has been exhibited in solo and group
exhibitions in galleries and shows in the Minneapolis/St. Paul
