Downdraft installation is logical
and straightforward if planned
carefully
There are several key points to note:
Maximum performance.
This is achieved by positioning the air intake
as close as practical to the cooking elements.
Air intakes can be mounted either side of the
cooking surface or behind it. The downdraft
is most effective on those elements nearest
the air intake and should not draw air over the
controls.
Maximum extraction capabilities.
To achieve the very high extraction capabilities
of the Downdraft, there must be a similar flow
of “Return Air” from outside the cooking area.
This may be the natural flow of air through
open windows or doors. Alternatively you can
use strategically placed inlet vents – the higher
the better – to provide airflow which will further
assist extraction from the kitchen.
In-wall airbox.
Unless access is available from the wall behind
the unit, the wall lining needs to be removed to
install this unit. We recommend that the airbox

• Always disconnect the electrical supply
before cleaning or servicing
Unless a riser unit is installed, the in-bench
downdraft must be fitted with a gas flame
deflector if positioned adjacent to a gas
appliance to prevent the flame being drawn into
the intake and to enable effective combustion.
It is recommended the in-wall model be
mounted at least 150mm (optimum of 300mm)
off the benchtop.
In all cases the gas cooktop must be fitted in
accordance with the appropriate regulations.
Wall mounted controls.
The Parmco in-bench and in-wall Downdrafts
have been designed to utilise remote electrical
switching typically mounted on the wall with
other switches and controls. A light dimmer
or fan speed control can also be added.
Local electrical authority regulations must be
observed when fitting these appliances.
Bench cut-out.
Prior to cutting out, determine which side the
airbox the motor will be fastened to because:

Canopy and Rangehood Installation Tips
Maximum extraction
capabilities
To achieve high extraction capabilities there
must be a similar flow of “Return Air” from
outside the cooking area. This may be the
natural flow of air through open windows or
doors.
Alternatively, you can use strategically placed
inlet vents to provide airflow which will further
assist extraction from the kitchen.
Recirculating with an odour filter is less
efficient than external venting since the
carbon filter impedes airflow through the unit.
Recirculating without the odour filter removes
grease but simply returns the stale odours to
the kitchen area.
To work effectively, your ventilation unit should
change the air in your kitchen 5 times per hour.
To see if your unit meets this requirement
calculate out the amount of space in your
kitchen in cubic metres (depth x width x height)
and check that the performance figure for your
ventilation unit is five times this figure.
Example:
If the size of the room has a width of 10m, a
depth of 7m and has a height of 2.5m, then the
formula will be: 10 x 7 x 2.5x 5= 8753/hour

The minimum extraction rate that is required is
then 8753/hour. You will find the extraction rate
described on each ventilation product.

Ducting components for external
exhaust
Use only ducting suitable for the venting of
kitchen exhaust fumes. Parmco Sales has a
comprehensive range of ducting components
available
(see Ducting page 75 or 77).
For optimum efficiency, use only short
smooth exhaust ducting with minimal bends.
For example, each 90 degree bend equals
approximately
5 metres of smooth bore ducting. Flexible
ducting or ducting without a smooth bore
may have an adverse effect on airflow
performance.
Ideally, total ducting length including bends
should not be more than 15 metres of 150mm
or larger diameter ducting.
Always ensure that ducting from the motor
housing or remote motor mount is not
restricted by studs or floor joists.
Outlets
Never discharge exhaust air into a chimney or
flue that may carry combustion products from
other sources. Do not discharge into a wall
cavity unless the cavity is designed for that
purpose.
When installing a rangehood above a gas or
electric cooktop appliance, all the relevant
New Zealand building, installation and
regulation standards including NZS 5261 must
be adhered to.

Remote Motoring Options
Remote motoring is a fantastic way of reducing
extractor noise while retaining excellent
airflow. Not available on all Parmco canopies
and rangehoods. This specialist procedure
comprises of some key changes to your
extractor’s make-up.
