3-2-1 Update
Spring is here and—if you’re anything like me—that means it’s time to quit using the weather
as an excuse to sit on the couch and watch Netflix. But, don’t worry, because we’re making it
easy for you to get involved and get moving by providing you and your family lots of
opportunities to stay active.

President & CEO
3) DSACO’s Running Club meets every Monday night at Antrim Park. Individuals of all abilities
can jog, run, or in my case some version of a sprint-walk… and train for our Run for Down
Syndrome event taking place on May 19th in Dublin. The Running Club begins on March 28th
and will go through Monday, May 16th. Want to participate? Show up and you will be greeted
by a volunteer who is ready to help you pace out those laps around Antrim Park.
2) With support from Nationwide Children’s Hospital and The Country Club at Muirfield Village
Foundation, DSACO is hosting our 9th iCanBike Camp June 6-10 at Worthington Kilbourne High
School. Open to individuals who have a developmental disability, this camp has seen an average of an 80% success rate
in individuals learning how to ride a 2-wheeler in just one week! Biking is more than just an exercise; it’s a social
activity that builds connections with friends and family. If you are interested in being a part of this amazing camp,
whether it’s volunteering to run alongside a rider or registering a camper, visit dsaco.net/icanbike to be a part of the
action!
1) If running or biking isn’t of interest, please check out our Recreation Scholarship to explore activities! The
scholarship can reimburse for things like swimming lessons, dancing, workout classes (check out the Sweatin’ Downs
class at Sweat Box Fitness!), personal training, camp and other activities in your community. We have worked to make
the application simple, so apply before funds run out! For more information go to dsaco.net/scholarships. Need some
ideas? Call our office and we’ll let you know of a few reputable places to get started in new activities!
DSACO WELCOMES NEW INTERNS
Caroline Lieser is a third year student at The Ohio State University studying biomedical engineering.
She coaches the softball, swimming, basketball, and volleyball teams for the Columbus Schools Special

swimming. We are excited to welcome Caroline as she leads DSACO’s new Healthy Lifestyles initiative.
Sammie Keitlen is a senior at The Ohio State University majoring in Environment, Economy,
Development and Sustainability. She has been a member of the club Students Supporting People with
Down Syndrome (SSPDS) for three years and she is the Volunteer Coordinator for Your Night Out, a
student run program which provides free babysitting for families who have children with Down
syndrome. DSACO is thrilled to have Sammie’s leadership as we pilot The Learning Program Online™.

On March 5, 2016, The Footsteps Dance Theater Company participated in the Power of
Dance competition. Each studio that participated in the competition was able to select
an organization to receive a donation from the competition, on their behalf. The
Footsteps Dance Theater Company director and owner, Jennifer Curren, asked the
company families for nominations; Addie Kearns nominated DSACO to receive the
donation and DSACO was selected. The company kids earned $430 for DSACO!
Thank you to Addie and the entire Kearns family for your ongoing support!

MEDICALLY SPEAKING
MEDICALLY SPEAKING, By Stephanie Santoro, MD
DS-Connect®
In the Down Syndrome Clinic at Nationwide Children's
Hospital, I meet with families to discuss the chromosomal
basis of Down syndrome. Many people have met with
geneticists or genetic counselors before, often talking
about how and why extra chromosomal material exists,
sharing medical resources and support group information.
I’ve probably met with many of you already! During those
discussions, unanswered questions nearly always arise:
Why do some people with Down syndrome develop
leukemia? What causes the difference in life expectancy
for different races with Down syndrome? Do people with
mosaic Down syndrome always have fewer signs of Down
syndrome? There is always more to learn about Down
syndrome and more research to be done. As I was looking
through the quarterly publications from Nationwide
Children's Hospital, there were two articles which studied
Down syndrome. One about the use of a procedure called
ECMO in newborns with Down syndrome addresses ways
to improve adherence to screening guidelines for Down
syndrome. Physicians and researchers at Nationwide
Children's Hospital are involved in ongoing research about
Down syndrome; the hospital then distributes publications
to physicians throughout the hospital to help disseminate
answers to the wider community and also bring awareness
to research related to Down syndrome.
involvement with research is absolutely crucial. Parent
groups related to research for autism helped launch
registries which led to national, then international
collaborations. A large, searchable database, called the
National Database for Autism Research (NDAR) was
created. To date, NDAR is considered the largest
neuroscience and genomic data repository for autism
research. None of this could have been done without
parent involvement leading the way. The National
Institutes of Health recently created a similar database for
Down syndrome, called DS-Connect®. At first, DSConnect® seemed confusing to me – how do I use this as a
researcher? Could it really be helpful? DS-Connect® uses
a new approach to research, through collecting patient
information in a secure, de-identified way that remains
linked to a patient’s contact information. To address some
of those unanswered questions, I might want to study all
patients in Columbus with Down syndrome who had
leukemia. In traditional research, after IRB approval, I
would need to approach individual families or review
individual records to identify these patients before I could
even begin my research. With DS-Connect®, I could
immediately identify those patients based on the
information that is already loaded (from parents or
patients!) in DS-Connect®. Avoiding reviewing charts of
patients without leukemia (around 99 charts to find 1 with

MEDICALLY SPEAKING...CONTINUED, By Stephanie Santoro, MD
The anonymous, voluntary survey is available at: https://
redcap.nchri.org/surveys/?s=MEHJJDJNH8
However, it appears that many people haven’t registered
on DS-Connect®. Over the past six months, more people
in Columbus and Ohio are registering but we still need
more! Suggestions or feedback about the DS-Connect®
database would be helpful too. I want to know what you
think!
I am completing the study to find out what you like or
dislike about DS-Connect® and any suggestions for
improvement. I plan to present these results at a meeting
for Down syndrome to share with creators of the DSConnect® database. I hope to learn more about how to
improve awareness of the database but also how to
improve the database itself. I hope that together we can
learn more about Down syndrome and answer questions
many families have.
Thanks for reading – I’m very excited to see you all in the
Down Syndrome Clinic!
