On June 9th, students from the 9th-11th grade will experience Israel through the generosity of the Sherwin and Naomi Kripke Israel Program Fund. This is our third group of students to travel to Israel. Our students will also have the opportunity to visit with our friends from the Partnership Region in the Western Galilee as part of the exciting itinerary. Cantor Ivor Lichterman, Jill Kripke, and Stuart Brody will be accompanying fifteen Confirmation students on the trip. We wish a mazel tov and safe travels to our Confirmands and their families. NOTE S FROM THE CANTOR during which we will observe a yizkor commemoration. STAYING ACTIVE & ENGAGED On Shabbat April 6th besides my talk on the trip to South Africa and Yom Hashoa, there will also be a Tot Shabbat service in the chapel. On Shabbat April 13th in honor of Yom Ha’atzma’ut/Israel Independence Day I will speak on The Conservative Movement in Israel – its contribution to Israeli Society. On Shabbat April 20th will be Teen Takeover and Camp Shabbat with our youth leading the entire service. Our new youth director, Stephen Lamb, ([email protected]) whose presence has already been felt, and whom I would like to warmly welcome, and Deena Zucker ([email protected]) are busy working on this. If you wish to participate please contact one of them. May 4th is Men’s Club Shabbat. If you would like to participate contact Dave Zack at [email protected] or Greg Davis at [email protected]. I have received so much positive feedback concerning this year’s fabulous Purim Spiel, Gagamegillah, including many who said this was one of the best, if not the best ever. A hearty yasher koach and deep appreciation to those who put in so much time and effort to make it such a rousing success, particularly the writers 3Z Productions (Deena, Sophie and Meira Zucker) and our talented producer Irina Zaurov, with special efforts by Paul Causman, Abby and Kyle Schwartz, Hope Davis and all the cast, crew, band, youth and parents! The spiel was dedicated with love to Miriam Leeper-Kende of blessed memory for her many years of dedication to the spiels. Soon after Purim I was privileged to cohost with my brother a 90th birthday celebration of my dear mother Miriam’s incredible life, in Cape Town, South Africa. I will present a full report from the pulpit about the celebration and South Africa in general, as well as addressing the subject of Yom Hashoa/Holocaust Commemoration after Pesach, on Shabbat April 6th. While there I added some final touches to the wonderful Jewish heritage trip I am planning on leading from our congregation with Lee and Gail Kwait in November this year. Our deep gratitude to Rabbi Sokobin, David Friedes, David Weinberg and Howard Rosenbaum who kept things functioning smoothly in my absence. Sunday May 5th will be Confirmation with 12 wonderful confirmands. We are once again deeply appreciative of Rabbi Alan Sokobin who has graciously stepped in to prepare the class since the departure of the Rabbi. On Shabbat May 11th will be the final Family Shabbat of the season which will also incorporate the Religious School closing ceremony, teacher appreciation, and the honoring of all youth service participants with prizes for the most frequent volunteers. My involvement in our religious school continues at a frenetic pace with the model seder, b’nai mitzvah classes, and as part of our life cycle curriculum - field trips to the mikvah, Wick Funeral Home and Beth Shalom Cemetery for a genizah/religious items burial ceremony. Immediately on my return from overseas it was Sisterhood Shabbat and I would like to thank the talented group of participants for their wonderful efforts which made the service and program so special. Joanne Rubin spent many hours coordinating the large group of As you can see there is something for everyone at volunteers, who led almost the entire service so beautifully B’nai Israel. You will likely be reading this bulletin in the midst of your Hazzan Ivor Lichterman holiday celebration which I hope is joyous and meaningful. th nd The 8 and final day of Pesach is on Tuesday April 2 2 PRESIDENT’S CORNER We remember Al Burg When Al Burg passed away last year, he left a hole in our community. With his quiet, steadfast commitment to good deeds, he touched many lives. In this same thoughtful way he made a significant donation to B’nai Israel from his estate. This generosity truly benefits the entire congregation, and we thank him and his family for their consideration. Al and Eileen may no longer be with us, but they have left us another memory of kindness, caring and commitment our B’nai Israel family. Their gift makes a difference for us and our ability to keep our kehilla the vibrant community that we have become. Naming Congregation B'nai Israel as a beneficiary of your retirement plan, IRA, life insurance policy or bank or brokerage account is a generous way to make a legacy gift "outside" a will. Like a bequest in a will, these gifts help ensure the future of Congregation B'nai Israel. These gifts are easy to implement, and often giving retirement funds is a tax-wise strategy for many people. Contact your plan or policy administrator for a change of beneficiary form for retirement and life insurance accounts. For bank or brokerage accounts, you will need to complete the appropriate form from the company. Talk to your estate planner, lawyer or accountant about how you can include B'nai Israel in your estate planning. It will mean more to us than you may realize. Rabbi Search The Rabbi Search Committee has no news to report to the congregation. At present, the Committee is looking into creative ways to satisfy the needs of our congregation, whether that be by interviewing other candidates, hiring an interim rabbi, or hiring a rabbi for holidays and special events. As options are being discussed, we will be involving the congregation in the pathway to a decision. Feel free to contact me, Dena Zack or Kathy Sack with your input. Meira Zucker MEN’S CLUB UPCOMING MEN’S CLUB EVENTS May 4, 2013 Men’s Club Shabbat Join us as the men and their children take center stage in the Shabbat Service. Hebrew and English aliyahs available. Our 5/6th graders had the opportunity to attend a field trip led by Rene Rusgo to Giant Eagle to purchase food on a food stamp budget. They were divided into groups, along with their friends from Shomer Emunim and led by parents. The groceries were then taken to the Jewish Family Service Food Bank. The 5/6th grade also had the opportunity to visit the mikvah at Etz Chayim with Cantor Lichterman as part of their life cycle curriculum. March concluded with our wonderful Consecration and Family Shabbat on March 23rd. Our Model Seder, led by Cantor Lichterman, was a huge success. Wishing all a wonderful Pesach! Whether it is the Alfama in Lisbon, Portugal with its “street of Jews,” or the empty chairs facing the sea in the harbor of Oslo, Norway, we enjoy learning about the Jews both past and present that had had an impact on so many places in the world. In January, 2011, we had the opportunity to visit Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. “What Jewish connection could there possibly be in Rio de Janeiro?” you might ask. Glad you asked. We learned there are 50,000 Jewish live in Rio out of a total 150,000 Jews in all of Brazil. Our wonderful guide, Sonya, drove us by Rabin Square with its beautiful menorah. This was on the way to Corcovado, the mountain which means “hunchback” in Portuguese to visit the beautiful statue of Chris, the Redeemer, which sits at its peak. The statue is the symbol that most represents Rio and its welcoming openness. What most people do not know is that it was designed by a French sculptor of Jewish descent whose parents fled Poland in the 1860’s. It is said that he was so moved by the spirituality of the project that he wrote prayers and inserted them in the wet cement behind the heart. This reminds us of Jews writing their prayers on scraps of paper to insert in the cracks of the walls of the Kotel. After our visit to Corcovado, our guide had arranged a private tour of the most historic synagogue in Rio, the Grand Temple, which is protected by the National Registry of Historical Buildings. We were privileged to have our tour led by Dr. Roy Schneider, the synagogue’s president. In a warm and friendly manner he relayed to us the history of the congregation and pointed out the small bronze plaque mounted on the back wall of the sanctuary dedicated to his great-grandfather who had organized and led the congregation of very poor Jewish immigrants to build this magnificent house of worship. The design dated to 1928, was made by an Italian, non-Jewish architect, Mario Vodret, who won a contest organized by the local Jewish community. In spite of the fact that it was commissioned by the local community that had its origins predominantly in Central Europe (the Ashkenazim), its lines and details clearly evoke the culture of the Jews from the Mediterranean (the Sephardim). The mosaics behind the bima and outside the entry to the Grand Temple are beautiful and amazing. The Grand Temple was inaugurated in 1932, and for several decades it was the center of the social and religious life of the Jews in Rio de Janeiro. The most distinguished rabbis and other personalities who visited Rio came and preached here. The religious ceremonies attracted a big number of Jews from Rio as well as other cities in Brazil. Likewise, here were celebrated the most important weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. It was the Grand Temple that the Rio de Janeiro Jewish community in a truly remarkable evening commemorated the partition of Palestine and the birth of Israel. With economic growth and social consolidation of the community, new synagogues were built and there was a residential dispersion of the Grand Temple’s membership which resulted in a diminishing of frequency but not in the loss of importance of the synagogue it’s self. 8 Today, the Grand Temple celebrates Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and they continue to perform weddings and Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Even though the Grand Temple is no longer used on a daily basis, it will go on to stand as an enduring symbol of the vibrant Jewish community of Rio de Janeiro. Lee & Gail were married at B’nai Israel almost fifty years ago, raised three daughter’s in shul. Gail’s family has been here for five generations. The bima of the Grand Temple The entry to the Grand Temple Detailed Mosaic design We invite members of Congregation B’nai Israel to submit articles and pictures of trips with personal Jewish significance to be reprinted in the bulletin when space is available. Please send or email your article and pictures to Kandee Storm, [email protected]. 9 Special Birthdays KIDDUSH – Todah Rabah to: March 16- Sisterhood in honor of Sisterhood Shabbat Lois Burke 4/3 Stephen Goldberg 4/21 Natalie Julius 4/4 Margie Kohler 4/9 Alyssa Portnoy 4/22 Madelyn Regenstrief 4/4 Rich Rusgo 4/17 Sarah Sherman 4/16 Michael Theise 4/15 Judy Weinberg 4/16 Belated but a special happy birthday to long time members Jerry Gold 90 Yvette Levin 90 Nate Schwartz 93 March 23– Consecration families in honor of consecration April 27– Abe & Dara Musher-Eizenman in honor of Ella’s Bat Mitzvah SOAP Synagogue Organized Afternoon Program April Topics 3 10 17 24 Great Cantors of the Golden Era Personal Stories of the Holocaust Israel at 65 Musical Inspiration Please join Hazzan Lichterman at 1:00 pm in the B’nai Israel Library for a lively discussion.
