2005 NATIONAL BLIND SAILING
CHAMPIONSHIP
B
ay of Plenty Trailer Yacht Squadron
hosted the 2nd Blind Sailing National
Championship on 26th and 27th February 2005
at Lake Rotoiti, Rotorua. Seven entrants faced the
starter and the crews, who had been training for
three months prior to the regatta, were tuned to a
high standard.
The conditions were light and testing for the seven
races. The event was sailed in the best of Rotorua
weather. The racing was very close and the final
result was in doubt even after the final race was
complete.
The judges had to consult the Rule book as points
Paulien Eitjes accepting the Bob Larkin Memorial Trophy

A guest sighted tactician from Spain, Gonzalo Perez, an Olympic Finn Class
coach for the Spanish team, having his first experience of blind sailing, was
paired off with our youngest competitor, Daniel Holt. He quickly captured the
respect of the participants and earned the nick name of “Speedy” at his first
introduction. No doubt we will see a Spanish Blind Sailing team at the next
world championships.
Blind Sailing NZ would like to acknowledge the organisation of the Bay of
Plenty Trailer Yacht Squadron for organising the regatta.
Also thanks to Race Officer Bill Whitiskie and his team for travelling from
Tauranga to officiate.
Congratulations to Paulien Eitjes, Lynne Dickey and Brian Trubovich for
a well deserved victory. This crew kept away from any controversy, rule
infringements and took every opportunity that was presented to them.

TAURANGA REPORT
H
i from Johan the Chairman of the Blind Sailing
club in Tauranga. I am a fully sighted person who
moved here from the Netherlands about 9 years ago.
My partner is sight impaired and through her, I have
been involved in many aspects of disabled sports, from
horse riding to sailing. I am also involved with Special
Olympics as one of their soccer and athletics coaches. My
aim is to become a sailing coach so I can help make Blind
Sailing even more successful than it already is. But that
is enough about me, let's get on to the real important
stuff.
We have had a boomer summer here in Tauranga. We
have had our Farr 6000s for about a year now and
we have our members competing in the Tauranga Yacht
and Power Boat Club (our yacht club) Friday night two
handed series. We are also crewing on A and B division
keelers on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
Unfortunately, due to circumstances the Auckland to
Tauranga race this year will not be sailed by us but we
have already secured a yacht for next year and we would
like to challenge other clubs to try and do the same.
I would like to thank all the people involved with
organizing the NZ National Championships on Lake
Rotoiti this year. We have had a great weekend and as
far as I am aware there were no problems that are worth
mentioning. So again thank you all for a great weekend.
We had four of our members attending the Nationals.
These were:
The Tauranga Blind and Vision Impaired Sailing Club’s Farr 6000
boats on the hard at the Tauranga Marina.
Bagged by Bagshaw...
Auckland Blind and Vision Impaired Sailing Club
take to the sea in their new Farr 727.
• David Monk, Mainsheet for Rob Aislabie
(B.O.P.T.Y.S.)
• Tom Donaghy, Mainsheet for Dick Lancaster
(B.O.P.T.Y.S.)
• Lynne Dickey, Mainsheet for Paulien Eitjes (both
Tauranga BVISC)
Result was that David came 1st in the B1 section, Tom
3rd in a very close contested B2 section and Paulien and
Lynne taking out the B2 and the NZ Championship.
Congratulations to all of you.
Now just one last reminder, and that is our match racing
regatta will be on again in September so make sure you
keep practicing. I hope to see you all there.

JUNIOR SAILING SCHOOL GRADUATES
VISIT EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND
lind Sailing Junior Scholarship students were
B
rewarded for their effort in qualifying for a Yachting
New Zealand Optimist Certificate by being invited
to meet Grant Dalton and Dean Barker at the
Emirates Team New Zealand compound in February.
James Hopkins from Auckland, Carl Halliburton from
Wellington and Daniel Holt from the North Shore spent
three hours at the compound having a guided tour.
They visited the sail loft viewing a spinnaker under
construction. After the sail loft they visited the repair
workshop and container workshop and saw the boat
that was damaged at Valencia, under repair. New keels,
masts and the hi-tech spars were all in the workshop
and the students were able to lift them and study their
complicated shapes and fittings.
James Hopkins, Grant Dalton Carl Halliburton and Daniel Holt.
“All looking for a job on the crew.”
The young men were then taken aboard NZL 81 and
were shown around by the Emirates TNZ crew as it was
being readied for a day’s sailing. All had a good view of
the full workings of the boat and posed for a photograph
some of the crew.
After meeting Grant Dalton and Dean Barker, the group
finished the morning with lunch at a local Westhaven
restaurant.
“Look out Dean, we are taking the wheel!”
“And we can sail too!”

“Maybe the next cup challenge, guys!”

National Championship
hanks to the help of the Bay of Plenty Trailer Yacht
Squadron blind sailing now draws on a pool of blind
or vision impaired yachties from a range of centres and
clubs to compete for the Bob Larkin Memorial Trophy.
This is the oldest trophy in blind sailing, having been
presented by Paxus, a company that employed a blind
yachtsman and gold medal winner at the first World
Blind Sailing Championships, Bob Wicks, now residing
in Hamilton. After Paxus was merged into another
conglomerate, the cup was renamed for our founding
secretary Bob Larkin, after his death. The engraving
there-on contains the names of the crews of all the
winners from 1989. An archive to be cherished.
T
The regular sailing in Tauranga has benefited those
members from that area and it showed in their
performances in the regatta.
The results brought a few surprises but it was worthy
to note that sighted tacticians that had competed
successfully in past World regattas, filled first and third
places. Second place was filled by a tactician new to blind
sailing but with a successful National Championship
record in open company.
The Council is trying to convince the Auckland Blind
and Vision Impaired Sailing Club to accept the National
Championship and run it with their regatta planned for
April 2006, and to be run out of the Ponsonby Cruising
Club. Negotiations are in the early stages.
Selection Trials
Tony Thompson has been conducting observation trials
involving mini workup regattas leading up to the
selection of a squad from which the final six blind sailors
will be chosen. We are all awaiting the news and we will
advise you all of the squad as soon as the selectors release
the details.
Neil Coster
Tauranga Blind and Vision Impaired Blind Sailing Club
advise the passing of Neil Coster, a long time member
of Blind Sailing NZ. Neil was a regular attendee of
the National Blind Sailing Schools and a foundation
member of the Tauranga group.
Dennis Dodson
Dennis, one of Blind Sailing NZ’s original sighted
tacticians passed away at his home in late January. A
group of Young 88 owners were volunteered to offer their
boats for the selection trials for the first World Blind
Sailing Championship Team. In the boat, then named
“Danger Zone”, Dennis was teamed with Mark Mulcare,
David Kerslake as VIP crew and Kevin Mulcare as
sighted crew. This crew won the B1 division of the
trials and the rest of the story
has been well documented.
Dennis continued his
association with Blind Sailing
NZ, being one of our longest
standing financial members
and attending every function
held, also contributing to the
travelling fund for each of the
International ventures of the
NZ Blind Sailing team. Blind
Sailing NZ will miss his counsel.
Don Mason
Mark Mulcare
Former three time B1 World Blind Sailing Champion.
Mark Mulcare has just sold his 36 footer “MacIntosh” and
has purchased a Thompson 30. The reason, is a change in
direction to high peformance class racing. Mark is one of
the leaders in forming the T30 class association and looks
forward to some exciting racing.
Borrowed Boats
A letter received from one of our members voiced
concerns over the lack of respect for borrowed boats and
damage caused. The Council has discussed this matter
and it is known that one sighted tactician is not happy
and is looking for redress. The Council considered that a
general warning be issued that more care must be taken as
boats are on loan, and if the current attitude prevails, no
one will wish to lend their boats for blind sailing events.
Recent incidents include:
• Major collision at the last Tauranga Match Racing
Regatta.
• A recent grounding at Tauranga (own boat).
• An accident causing damage (2004 National regatta).
• Incidents at lead-up regattas causing damage.
• An accident at the 2005 National Regatta causing.
damage.
• There wereroundings on reefs at Rotoiti (reefs not
explained at pre-race briefings and hazards not known
to race officer).
As a suggestion, near future future Sailing Schools should
carry a major part of their programme instructing the
sighted communication skills with the blind.
The onus is on the sighted help and it is considered
that too many risks are being taken. Remember the
helmsperson cannot see and only does what he/she is
told.
This is a serious concern and Council urges caution.
Please respect the privilege given to you by the generosity
of others. Please don’t bite the hands that feed you.
