Stade Saturdays ride again from June 20th all the way through to Hastings Bonfire
Night on October 17th with a treasure trove of music and performance from which
you can treat yourself.
Stade Saturdays is a series of free performances that takes place on the Stade
saturdays
Open Space on Hastings seafront in the heart of Hastings Old Town,
nestling beside saturdays
the award-winning Jerwood Art Gallery, the traditional beach-launched fishing fleet
and the town’s iconic ‘net shops’.
Now in its fourth season, Stade Saturdays brings its usual but always varied and
saturdays
surprising mix of local and nationally acclaimed performers (often both!)
to the
saturdays
Rock-a-Nore seafront.
Stade Saturdays has given a helping hand to home grown annual events such as the
reversed logo when
Hastings Shanty Festival, the Gilded Hand Buskers’ Fair, the annual Afrikaba festival White
it appears on colours
backgrounds etc..
and the latest of these, Journeys Dance Festival, that takes place in Hastings, Bexhill
saturdays

and Rye over the August bank holiday and on a special “Stade Sunday”.
Similarly, the alternative excellence of Hastings visual arts festival Coastal Currents
showcases our own Yumino Seki and the quirkily alternative Hunt and Darton in
their show ‘Boredom’.
However, if, as psychologists have argued, boredom is actually bad for your
health, then prescribe yourself a visit to the Stade Open Space once a week,
to keep those fevers away: there’s bluegrass, homegrown folk, Latin, circus,
surrealist poetry, something called a Distance Ladder, and the massed local
vocal talents of Vocal Explosion.
Why be bored when you could be in Hastings enjoying the wonderful food
and drink, the convivial atmosphere, the sea and Stade Saturdays?

HASTINGS MIDSUMMER
FISH FEST
Colourful, energetic & crowd-stomping,
CoCo and the Butterfields combine
the intimate vibrancy of a village folk
fair with powerful vocal melodies and
an undercurrent of driving beatbox.
Their catchy songs and dynamic
performances have established them as
one of the most phenomenal live shows
in the UK, earning critical acclaim for
incendiary shows at Glastonbury, Isle of
Wight and Camp Bestival. Stacking up
an impressive 500,000 YouTube hits,
the band marched into the limelight
when their “Warriors” single was
featured by Steve Lamacq on BBC
6Music and was independently released
at a 1,200 capacity sell-out show.
After its success in 2014, Hastings
Midsummer Fish Fest is back!
This free event presents the best fish,
food and drink from the Hastings area
as well as encompassing the best of
local arts and music: the live music
kicks off with a performance from
Hastings Sinfonia, directed by the
internationally celebrated Polo Piatti
at 12 noon on Saturday.
Plus fantastic cooking demonstrations,
displays from the fishermen and a
host of family activities as everyone
is invited to come along to celebrate
both Mid-summer and the Hastings
fishing industry.

After releasing Tom Williams and The
Boat’s acclaimed 3rd LP ‘Easy Fantastic’
on Moshi Moshi Records, Tom is
jumping ship to explore a more stripped
back approach, one that focuses
entirely on the charming intensity of
his lyrical songwriting and the minimal
arrangements provided by a close circle
of friends.
The song ‘New Guitar’ itself refers to his
buying a ”new old” guitar that “all kinds
of new songs fell out” of. The first song
that did, is about moving down to the
sea at St Leonards to make a fresh start:
“new songs, new town, new guitar”.
Intense, moving yet always memorable
and catchy, Williams certainly isn’t
marooned without the Boat, he still has
his guitar and he’s sailing away on it
into a blue moon. An unmissable treat.

daredevil mayhem.

An exhilarating and mesmerising
performance of Louis Aragon’s
1924 prose-poem-essay “A Wave of
Dreams” set in evocative psychedelic
soundscapes that truly bring it alive.
The poem, beautifully translated
by Susan de Muth, is a compelling,
lyrical first-hand account of the early
days of surrealist experimentation in
Paris. Writing in 1924, Aragon vividly
describes, and philosophically evaluates,
the inner adventures, hallucinations and
encounters with the ‘Marvellous’ which
took the young surrealists to the brink
of insanity as a revolutionary new era
in art history was born. Also featured
will be a screening of film-maker
Nichola Bruce’s magical interpretation
of an extract from the work entitled
“Dreams, Dreams, Dreams”.

Tymon Dogg is a singer-songwriter
and multi-instrumentalist veteran of
the legendary Apple and Threshold
record labels and was a member of
Joe Strummer’s Mescaleros. His 40
year career has included collaborations
with a wide variety of musicians from
Paul McCartney through the Clash to
flamenco superstar, the late Enrique
Morente. His most recent solo album
‘Made of Light’ was released on Thin
Man Records in June 2015.Don’t miss

The Hastings Shanty Festival is now
a much prized hardy perennial in the
Hastings’ festival calendar and has also
gained widespread acclaim in the world
of shanty singing. This year the festival
has expanded to take place on three
sites from 1- 5 pm on the Stade Open
Space and at the Fishermen’s Museum
and the White Rock Hotel. From 7.30
pm all performers will play sets on the
traditional shanty singing. New guests

Today it’s the turn of the Hastings
community to show what they can
do. This year we have the flavour of
the Big Top, with the Pulse School
of Movement and Hastings Guerilla
Circus amongst others delivering an
exciting programme of local circus
skills interspersed with athletic turns
from the South East Stars Cheerleaders
and a join-in workout fitness rave
from Active Hastings. From circus to
street art, from sand castles to human
pyramids, from downright brilliant to
upright piano, whether it’s singing,
dancing, playing music or any other
performance, to take part, get in

variety of performance skills on site

Hastings International Piano Concerto
Competition is hosting a people’s piano

GILDED HAND - INTERNATIONAL BUSKERS FAIR
“Oyez, oyez. The glove is up. No man
shall be arrested for busking until the
glove is taken down.“
Dating back to the medieval period the
Gilded Hand allowed for impromptu
performances and fairs to take place on
common land without the fear of arrest.
In modern times BB King, Jewell, Rod
Stewart and Tracy Chapman all began
their careers as buskers so see if you

Saturdays bring you The Gilded Hand
- International Buskers Fair, a day for
buskers to ply their trade, to entertain
and for the public to contribute.
Starting at 2 pm and finishing at 9 pm,
the Stade will play host to a variety of
musical buskers who will be passing
the hat after their shows, so please
be generous.
The Gilded Hand fair will be by invite
only and will play host to musicians
and players from across the UK with
specially invited guest to be announced

COASTAL CURRENTS PRESENT MANJUSAKA –
YUMINO SEKI PERFORMERS
JOURNEYS DANCE FESTIVAL SUNDAY SPECIAL
PRESENT ANNA MUDEKA BAND
MANJUSAKA is a new dance project
by Yumino Seki and funded by the
Arts Council England. Seki and her
cross-disciplined team explore worlds
of immortality through dance and
light installation.
In this exciting Stade Saturday special
(it’s on a Sunday!), local events
company 18 Hours, working with Ramp
Events, present the Anna Mudeka
Band, a six piece ensemble performing
a unique and intoxicating fusion of
Zimbabwean Mbira driven music.
Anna, who has trained with well-known
names such as Thomas Mapfumo, Stella
Chiweshe, Adzido Dance Ensemble,
merges music from across Sub-Saharan
cultures, combining contemporary and
traditional styles.
Seki’s choreography is drawn from
Butoh, a form of Japanese avantgarde dance theatre. Butoh emerged
from the post war chaos in Japan in
the 1950s when the country grappled
with the clash between new western
technology and traditional Japanese
values. Butoh became a new form
of expression, neither an imitation
of western culture nor a traditional
Japanese cultural practice.
MANJUSAKA creates a multidimensional
experience for viewers, incorporating
choreography, light installation,
soundscape and guided viewing points.
Reflecting the true essence of Butoh,
Seki’s work is a fusion of East and West,
contemporary and traditional.
This event is part of Coastal Currents,
Hastings’ annual arts festival and
Journeys Dance Festival, a free
celebration of dance in Hastings,
Bexhill and Rye, 29-30 August.

Hunt & Darton bring their brilliantly
witty stage-show to Stade Saturdays
in their first outdoor performance
of Boredom.
Boredom is an exploration into
the highs and lows of being bored.
Embrace it, combat it or simply
acknowledge it, boredom affects all
of us at some time or other. And Hunt
& Darton find that rather interesting.
Bringing you moves, some wise words,
‘you do it bits’ while promising lots
of visual stimuli in case anyone, well,
gets bored. Hunt & Darton think it’s
a damned good idea to get bored
and actively encourage you do to. It
might also just change your life. Hunt
& Darton worked with The Basement
and Cambridge Junction to develop
Boredom showing it for a month long
period at Edinburgh Fringe.
Hunt & Darton are a Live Art
Collaboration between Jenny Hunt
and Holly Darton. Approaching Live
Art from a Fine Art background
they work across mediums with a
sculptural approach to performance,
choreographing words and movement
in a sensory way and setting up
alternative spaces – often creating
installations to perform within.
Their work derives from their shared
celebrations and anxieties surrounding

life choices particularly as women,
in Britain, now. Their work has been
described as deadpan and absurd, often
collapsing into humour. Hunt and Darton
consistently re-assess their relationship
with audiences, embracing awkward
moments, risk-taking and constantly
trying to close the gap between
performer and viewer, opting for a raw,
underdone, conversational aesthetic.
Described by the NME as having
‘Fairport Convention’s’ folk with
Fleetwood Mac’s pop sensibilities’ and
championed by the likes of Bob Harris
and John Kennedy, husband and wife
duo Trevor Moss & Hannah-Lou have
been tirelessly touring since their last
album release in 2012. Highlights have
included playing the Acoustic Stage at
Glastonbury and supporting Tori Amos
on a four month EU and USA tour in
2014, appearing at such venues as LA’s
famous amphitheatre the Greek and
London’s Royal Albert Hall.
Having earned a reputation for getting
off the beaten track with their own tours
of tin tabernacles, village halls, social
clubs and even by canal boat, the couple
have also supported a host of musicians,
from Damon Albarn, Richard Thompson
and Beth Orton, to Ade Edmondson’s
Bad Shepherds, Loudon Wainwright and
legendary producer Ethan Johns.
Their fourth album, “Heaven Knows”
produced by Ethan Johns is due for
release in September 2015.

SEAFOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL
One of the most popular events in
Hastings’ calendar, this year’s Seafood
& Wine Festival promises all the usual
favourites :- great food (with a fishy
flavour, of course!), great wine and
great music. Weekend tickets cost just
£2, or £1 if bought in advance from the
Tourist Information Centre.

COAL PORTERS

The Coal Porters claim to be the
world’s first “alt-bluegrass” act,
demonstrating the power of fiddle,
mandolin, banjo, acoustic guitar and
doghouse bass when matched with
four-part harmonies and memorable
melodies. They have taken this sound
around the world being featured on
NPR’s Morning Edition in the USA and
having recorded a live session for Bob
Harris on BBC Radio 2.
The Coal Porters have five albums
available. Their most recent, Find
The One, was produced by folkrock legend John Wood, producer
of Fairport Convention, Nick Drake,
Squeeze and Beth Orton.
Formed in Los Angeles during the
last century, the Coal Porters were
originally an electric act centred
around ex-Long Ryder and genuine

of the Long Ryders 1985 hit single
“Looking For Lewis And Clark”.

Sonpikkante play irresistible raw AfroColombian roots music with classic 60s
Cumbia, Vallenato and Puya, mixing
in a little dub, a touch of Haitian and
a strong Latin base. Powered by deep
Afro-caribbean rhythms and a searing
Salsa groove, Sonpikkante features
members of Brighton’s legendary
Pollito Boogaloo led by Rafael Berrio.
Born and raised up in Columbia, Berrio
is committed to playing the traditional
music of his ancestors, the folk music
that his father and grandfather would
have known, music that speaks of all
