In order for us, as an organization, to be able to help
out as many downed riders as possible, we are
asking for volunteers. No job is too small! We are
always looking for new area reps and boogie bash
volunteers. The more people that we have to help
out the more people we are able to help. You never
know anyone of us could potentially find ourselves
in the unfortunate position as downed
rider. If you have some spare time
to offer we would love to hear
from you.
Newfie’s Natter
As we say hello too yet another riding season here in the Okanagan, we look back at last year’s adventures of good
and bad times. Unfortunately we lost two of our founding members. Gloria Taylor (Glo) and Ron Gompf (Butch),
their sudden passing last fall has taken a toll on many riders in the community. As I have personally lost a great
friend and mentor in Butch. If it wasn’t for him, I probably would not be where I am today. As for Gloria, she was
we all know, a strong woman and never backed down from any obstacle that stood in her way for herself, or for a
fellow rider. We are all going to miss you both but will never forget what both of you meant too each and every
one of us at one point or another in our lives.
Last year’s riding season was off to a slow start with all the rain we had in the spring, but finally summer came
and we were able to take our rides out and enjoy the great sites and rallies that were put on. I was only able to
attend a couple due to work etc. but the ones that I got to attended were awesome. I was glad to see some old
friends and make a few new ones, and also to spread the news about our organization.
Boogie bash,,, well last year’s attendance was higher than it has been in the past, and I would personally like to
thank everyone that came out and supported our cause of helping down riders, a special gratitude goes out too all
the volunteers that helped to make last year a very successful one. We hope you all are able to come again to this
year’s Boogie Bash as it will be our 25th annual,,, wow hard to believe that it has almost been 25 years since Glo,
Butch, Tom Doyle and the rest of the great folks who started our Okanagan Chapter, and we are so grateful they
did.
As its getting time to put our rides back on the road I would like to remind everyone to ride safe and keep the
rubber side down and we will see you all soon.

The Gate Keepers
We usually stand by the gate on hot summer nights,
Listening for a Harley as it slowly rumbles by;
In a silent salute to friends that have died,
Saying goodbye on the hot summer night;
Once in a while, they ride through the gate,
Rusted, and busted and twisted with age;
The men walk slowly with shimmering eyes,
The women with tears say lonely goodbyes;
Every once in a while someone comes to stay,
How they came here, it’s hard to say;
Sometimes they go down on some stretch of
highway,
Some say goodbye the old-fashioned way;
As our brothers and sisters are laid to rest,
The leaves seem to rustle with a quiet sigh;
As the spirits of our brothers and sisters,
Say their last goodbye;
We’ll never forget the lives that we’ve led,
No matter whether they were good or bad:
The wonderful time that we had in our lives,
Riding down the highways with friend’s on our
bikes:
The thundering vibrations as we roar down the road,
The gentle touch of the ones we no longer hold;
The love of our brothers and sister worth more than
gold,
These are the things we will miss to our very souls;
On one of these long lonely days,
You’ll see an Angel on some lonesome highway;
Please! Stop and Wait!
Think of ones inside that rusted gate;
For we are the Guardian Angels that hold your fate;

News from our local 4h club who cleans up and collects
the bottles for their fundraiser:
“Last year we used the full funds to fund our trip to
Barrier for the year. Usually we have a few fund raisers
to full fill our budget needs but last year a founding
member of our club passed away, and the only fund
raising we could seem to pull together was
the boogie bash. We made $913.30.”

Arthur Davidson
The inventor of the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Corporation, Arthur
Davidson, died and went to heaven. At the gates, St. Peter told Arthur,
"Since you've been such a good man and your motorcycles have
changed the world, your reward is that you can hang out with anyone
you want in Heaven."
Arthur thought about it for a minute and then said, "I want to hang out with God." St. Peter took Arthur to the
Throne room, and introduced him to God.
Arthur then asked God, "Hey, aren't you the inventor of woman?" God said, "Ah, yes." "Well," said Arthur,
"professional to professional, you have some major design flaws in your invention:
1. There's too much inconsistency in the front-end protrusion.
2. It chatters constantly at high speeds.
3. Most of the rear ends are too soft and wobble too much.
4. The intake is placed way too close to the exhaust
5. And the maintenance costs are outrageous."
"Hmmmm, you may have some good points there," replied God, "hold on." God went to his Celestial super
computer typed in a few words and waited for the results. The computer printed out a slip of paper and God read
it.
"Well, it may be true that my invention is flawed," God said to Arthur, "but according to these numbers, more
men are riding my invention than yours."
12 Year Old Scotch
An old, well-traveled biker sits in a bar watching as a haughty young man comes in and orders a shot of 12 year
old scotch. The bar tender is irritated and gives him a shot of bar scotch. The man takes a sip and spits the drink
out and demands a shot of 12 year old scotch. The bar tender decides to fuck with the man and gives him a shot of
6 year old scotch. He takes a sip and spits it out again and exclaims, “that’s 6 year old scotch, I said I wanted 12
year old scotch!” The bar tender smiles and pours a shot of 9 year old scotch. The man takes a sip and again spits
it out, “I said 12 year old scotch!” The bar tender decides that the man does, indeed, know his scotch and pours
him his shot of 12 year old scotch. He sips it once, then sips it again, and says, “Now that is 12 year old scotch !”
The old biker sidles up to the young man with a glass of liquid and says to him “Here, taste this”! The young man
takes a swig and immediately spits it out and says “It tastes like piss”! “Yeah”, says the old biker, “It’s mine, How
old am I”?

The Horse and the Chicken
On the farm lived a chicken and a horse,
both of whom loved to play together.
One day the two were playing, when the
horse fell into a bog and began to sink.
Scared for his life, the horse whinnied
for the chicken to go to the farmer for
help! Off the chicken ran back to the
farm. Arriving at the farm, he searched
and searched for the farmer, but to no
avail, for he had gone to town with the
only tractor. Running around, the
chicken spied the farmer’s new Harley.
Finding the keys in the ignition, the
chicken sped off with a length of rope
hoping he still had time to save his
friend’s life. Back at the bog, the horse
was surprised, but happy, to see the
chicken arrive on the shiny Harley, and
he managed to get a hold of the loop of
the rear bumper of the farmer’s bike, the
chicken then drove slowly forward and
with the aid of the powerful bike,
rescued the horse! Happy and proud, the
chicken rode the Harley back to the
farmhouse, and the farmer was none the
wiser when he returned. The friendship
between the two animals was cemented:
Best buddies, best pals. A few weeks
later, the chicken fell into a mud pit and
soon, he too, began to sink and cried out
to the horse to save his life! The horse
thought a moment, walked over, and
straddled the large puddle. Looking
underneath, he told the chicken to grab
his hangy-down thingy and he would
then lift him out of the pit. The chicken
got a good grip and the horse pulled him
up and out, saving his life.
The moral of the story, (Yep. You
betcha. There is a moral!) ‘When you’re
hung like a horse, you don’t need a
Harley to pick up chicks!

The Interior B.C. Chapter of A.I.M. was formed in June 1988 and
there are also chapters in other areas of the province. All chapters
are separate registered non-profit societies and operate
autonomously. All chapters meet annually at a provincial meeting
to review operations, share ideas and set general policy and dues
for all chapters for the coming year.
In Honour of…
The fall of 2012 was a heartbreaking one for the Interior Chapter of AIM in that it lost two of its founding
members. Ron “Butch” Gompf passed away on September 9, 2012 followed closely by its founder, Gloria
Taylor on October 4, 2012.
In 1986/87 Gloria, who had been injured in a motorcycle accident in the United States and received help from an
organization there - Aid to Injured Motorcyclists – reached out to its Canadian counterpart, the Vancouver
based Association for Injured Motorcyclists (AIM). Gloria was determined to establish a chapter of AIM in the
Okanagan where she knew there was a need for an organization of ‘riders helping riders’. Vancouver AIM was
happy to help, but of course they were in Vancouver and had no funds with which to assist Gloria in her quest.
Gloria immediately enlisted the assistance of a core group of acquaintances including her long-time friends, Butch
Gompf and Tom Doyle. Together they reeled-in anyone that they thought had the time, energy, contacts and
belief in her mission to help her make it happen. If they had some money too that didn’t hurt. Gloria was very
out-spoken, always telling it like it was and never sugar-coating anything. What you saw with her was what you
got. Gloria was tenacious in pursuing the undertaking at hand. She would not take “no” for an answer when she
approached anyone for funding, door prizes, donations, memberships, services…whatever. Sometimes people
ultimately said “yes” to Gloria just to get her to go away!
We must remember that Gloria undertook this significant task at a time when there were not many women riders.
Gloria always seemed to want to do things that she should not do! She was fiercely independent and determined
in everything she did. Telling Gloria that she could not do something was like waiving a red flag in front of a
bull. The more people challenged her, the more resolute she became.
Butch was a work horse and he knew “everyone”. Gloria had the vision and Butch had the contacts, strength and
stamina to help her make things happen. He worked tirelessly alongside her to host events raising awareness and
money for the Interior Chapter of AIM. Butch and Gloria had a mutual respect for each other and sometimes they
had differing opinions (they were both very stubborn) but they always managed to come together for the good of
AIM in the end.
In May of 1987 the first AIM event was held. It was a simple dance at the East Kelowna Hall that was very well
received by the riders in the Kelowna area and many of their friends from out of town. A little money was raised,
some more memberships were sold and AIM was on the map. That same spring under her guidance AIM put on a
display at Orchard Park mall (riding your bike through Orchard Park mall after hours is quite a rush). For 3 days
Gloria and other members sat beside the motorcycles, answering questions about AIM, selling memberships and
talking with lots of old guys who used to ride motorcycles in the war. Gloria was in her element. She was
showing the citizens of the Okanagan that motorcycle riders were something more than the way they are portrayed
in movies – they are a group of people with a common interest who care about each other very deeply. That
spring was the beginning of an organization that has seen many good times, bad times, changes, conflict and
revivals but remains strong to this day.
After a few years, when Gloria felt that AIM was strong enough, she backed away, leaving it to others to carry on
its good work. No doubt she had another challenge that was calling to her, even then. Tom Doyle sadly passed
away many years ago.
Butch was a single man when all of this started. He then married and fathered a son who occupied the majority of
his time but he remained supportive of AIM and ultimately came back to sit on the Board of Directors since AIM
had now become an incorporated Society. Butch continued to be involved with AIM and was a valued member of
the Board and volunteer for many years. It did not matter what needed to be done, Butch was always up for the
challenge.
In 2000 Butch was seriously injured in an accident while returning home from working at an AIM event in
Kamloops. He never really recovered from that accident, having times when his health was pretty good and then
relapses due to his injuries. Over those years he continued to be a strong believer and advocate for AIM and
attended as many events as his health permitted. Because of Butch’s devotion to the organization and in
recognition of the assistance that AIM provided to their family after his accident, Butch’s long-time partner,
Wilma, took up where Butch left off. Wilma sits on the Board and devotes many volunteer hours to AIM, just as
Butch did. The past couple of years have also seen his son, Sterling, attending Boogie Bash.
A few years ago Gloria was diagnosed with ALS and, never one to just sit back and take what came at her, Gloria
became the face of a lawsuit challenging Canada’s legislation preventing persons the right to die with dignity.
That lawsuit was successful, adding another victory to Gloria’s life’s accomplishments. While her list of
accomplishments was long, at the top of it would always be her two sons, Jason and Clint and her granddaughter,
Gabrielle.
Gloria attended 2012 Boogie Bash and although she no longer rode her beautiful Harley Davidson motorcycle or
proudly displayed her many tattoos, she was given an opportunity to tour the grounds and greet many old friends
and meet some new ones. The pride that she felt at having been the originator of such a great organization was
evident when you looked into her eyes.
Butch and Gloria have now been reunited with many old friends gone before them, including, Tom Doyle. We are
sure that the 3 of them are shaking things up in heaven. Rest in Peace our friends. You and your role in
establishing the Interior Chapter of AIM will never be forgotten.
Special thanks to Lynne Holmes for preparing the above memorial, and to Arlene Coulter for creating the
collage of Gloria, Butch and Tom.

Sadly, we lost a friend to many, Pete Leenhouts on
September 18, 2012 in a motorcycle accident on the Sunshine
Coast. It is said that what he loved most in life was his family,
and his passion was anything with a motor - his Harley, and his
Land Cruiser. Pete had many exceptional talents, with the
Intelligence to create and construct, many unique projects. These
included modified four wheelers, motorcycles, and equipment.
Many of his family and friends relied upon him to find
solutions to their mechanical dilemmas. In his business and as
an employee, he had the ability to draft an idea, create it, and
had the persistence to make it work.
Til we meet again…
Speaking of last year’s BOOGIE BASH, I would personally like to thank all the volunteers again for a wonderful
job at helping us put on this great event. Also, I would like to thank the board as well as they did a great job in
helping to organize everything so it would all go nice and smooth, (hey there were a couple of bugs,, but what the
hell,, what would a biker rally be without a couple of screw ups here and there). As you know every year we try
and do our best to provide everyone with the best entertainment as possible, but if you have any suggestions that
you would like to see at this years BOOGIE BASH, please feel free to jot us a couple of lines, send an email or
two to anyone on our board, and/or to [email protected].
Bernie,
V.P.
The Interior Chapter is pleased to advise the membership that after a hiatus of several years, Lynne Holmes

A Little Old Lady
A little old lady had always wanted to join a local biker club. One day she goes up and knocks on the door. A big,
hairy, bearded biker with tattoos all over his arms answers.
She proclaims, "I want to join your club." The guy was amused, but says she needs to meet certain biker
requirements in order to join. The biker asks: "Do you have a motorcycle?" The little old lady replies: "Yep... my
bike's parked over there", and points to a Harley in the driveway. The biker asks: "Do you drink?" The little old
lady replies: "Yep... drink like a fish. I'll drink any man in your club under the table." The biker asks: "Do you
smoke?" The lady replies: "Yep... smoke like a chimney. At least 4 packs of cigarettes a day. I'm shooting pool."
Very impressed the biker asks: "Last question, have you ever been picked up by the fuzz?" The old lady thinks for
a minute and says: Nope, but I've been swung around by my nipples a few times."
