Tuesday Crew
We have a new Tuesday crew member as Judy Kellar has joined
us working in the kitchen and the office. Welcome Judy!!!!
On behalf of Dianne Luther, Linda Clark and myself, I would
like to thank all the members that volunteered their time to
help at the WSIA membership/store tables at the Cleveland
Cultural Festival this year. With their help we managed to
sign up 94 members at the Festival and hand out many applications that are starting to come in. The members that
helped are Kathleen Mangan, Jim Mc Guirk, Frank Mc Guirk,
Mary Ellen Grealis, Peggy Mc Kenna, Pat Snowbrick, Bill
Luther, Charlotte Creel, Noreen Hastings, Mathew HoutReilly, Marty Hout, Dan Hout-Reilly, Kathleen and Jim
Stanton, Jim and Mary Ann McIlwee, Therese Conway,
Rosemary Keating, Margaret Harubin and T.J. Campbell.
Some members worked two and three shifts for us and we
are very grateful. As of this report the membership is at 2800.
Marge Flynn
Have you marked your calendar for Sun, Sept. 27th, 6:00
pm? That is the date of the next program your McNeeley
Library will present in the Madison Room at our WSIA
Club. We have invited the authors of Images of America –
Irish Cleveland by John Myers and Judith Cetina, to speak
about how they assembled the photos and information.
This is a photo essay book written about the Irish of Cleveland, it not only has many photos and references to our
WSIA Club, the cover of the book features a 1978 photo of
Joe Patten, Mike McGinty, Bill O’Malley and Pat O’Malley
marching down the avenue for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade,
proudly carrying the WSIA Club flag.
You can see and read about our churches, orphanages,
priests, the many clubs and organizations, dance schools,
sports, pubs, and so much more. You will see pictures of
Carneys, Sweeneys, Nugents, Barrys, Kilbanes, Corrigans
and so many more. I’ll bet your very own relatives are
among those depicted in this book.
Bring the family and enjoy light refreshments and relaxed
camaraderie. There is no cover charge.

FAMINE MEMORIAL MASS
Pat Dowd
The 16th Annual Famine Memorial Mass will be celebrated by Father Jim O’Donnell on Saturday, September
19th at 5:00 PM at the Famine Memorial site in the Flats.
Every year, since the dedication in 2000, hundreds come
to the site to remember and honor those who fled the
famine and left Ireland to seek a better life in America.
Sadly, the “coffin ships” prevented many from reaching
our shores. Many of our ancestors were among those
brave people – some perished, and others were able to
make their way here.

Achill-Cleveland Experience Opportunity
Do you have an Achill-Cleveland immigration story? Would you
like to have your family story and name honored and remembered?
Well now you can!
The Achill Deserted Village & Maritime Center is to become
Achill Island’s first all-weather tourism facility. The center will
provide history, education and entertainment for both adults
and children. Opening date is set for next summer or fall 2016.
“Lest we forget” – this Mass is our way of remembering
the sacrifices that were made by so many Irish men,
women, and children.
Contact Colleen Corrigan Day for more information about securing your family name and story in the center. Please send
your information (Family name, phone number, address and
email) to email: [email protected]; address: 1107
Meadowlawn Blvd., Parma, OH 44134; or call 216-956-7651.
Please join us at this beautiful site on the Cuyahoga
River, across from The Flat Iron, as we come together for
this Memorial Mass. Afterwards, stop in for a bite to eat
at one of the oldest Irish establishments in the Flats.
We are looking to secure the commitments and families by the
beginning of October 2015 before the Achill Island, County
Mayo guests arrive for the Mayo Society of Greater Cleveland
Ball on Saturday, October 10, 2015.
