Because ISE shows traditionally draw such large
numbers of outdoorsmen to one venue, the shows have
become a strong force for conservation. ISE has partnered

everything and for 2012 I’ve locked in some of the best
tides of the entire summer. When fishing in Alaska small
tides often translate to big fish especially when you are
looking for monster 100 plus pound halibut. In 2012, team
Fish Sniffer will be fishing during some of the calmest
tides of the entire year! I can’t wait.
I’ve rambled long enough. If you’d like to experience
Alaska at it’s best, if you’d like to meet the challenge of
landing trophy class lingcod and halibut, if you would
like a freezer stocked with snow white halibut steaks and
blood red salmon fillets stop by Captain Steve’s booth at
this year’s Sacramento ISE show and talk to Steve about
the upcoming season. He’ll answer all your questions and
show you some photos and video taken during his fishing
trips. You can also check out his mount of the current
world record lingcod. It’s impressive!

world record lingcod, an 80 plus pound leviathan, a few
years ago while fishing a reef that Steve found on the
edge of Alaska’s Gulf. These days we simply call the
reef “the lingcod spot”. The lingcod spot is beyond the
sheltered waters of the Cook Inlet, so weather plays a
factor in dictating whether or not you can fish there, but
when the seas cooperate the fishing is epic!
I made the run with Steve, his deckhand Rachel and
five Fish Sniffer supporters on August 27 and we caught
some mind blowing fish. My 61 pound lingcod was the
largest but we caught other lings weighed in at 56, 45 and
41 pounds along with a bunch of 30 plus pounders. We
also had big red rockfish to 20 pounds, halibut
to 48 pounds and a bunch of 3 to 6 pound black
rockfish.
After visiting Steve’s lingcod spot and seeing
so many trophy caliber bottom fish come over
the rail, I could have gone home right then and

salmon mixed in with the silvers and Steve was
anxious to see if we could hook one. King salmon
fishing is usually over that late in the summer, so
hooking one would be a real bonus.
The trolling action was hot. We ended up with
several silvers to about 12 pounds and a pair of
big kings to 20 while trolling rigged herring on
light gear. It was a great end to a spectacular trip.
With the action being so good last summer
why would I hold out hope that the fishing on
next summer’s trip will be even better? Tides!…

Wow! It’s already 2012 and I’m prepping for the
north state’s biggest outdoor show, the Sacramento
International Sportsmen’s Exposition at Cal Expo…
I must be having a lot of fun, because time sure is
flying by. 2011 went by in a flash. It seems like I just
returned from my trip to Captain Steve’s Lodge on
Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula last August and I’m already
planning my return trip to the lodge next July.
I’ve been to Steve’s place several times now and all
things considered I think my last trip was the best to date,
but next year’s trip set for July 28 through August 2 has the
potential to be even better, but we’ll get into that in a bit.
So what made the 2011 Fish Sniffer adventure to the
lodge so special? Well for a start we were in Alaska! If
you’ve never been to Alaska most of the things you’ve
heard are true. The country is vast, rugged and beautiful.
The water and woods are wild and unspoiled. And of
course the fish numbers are off the charts and the size of
the fish you catch makes you think you took a wrong turn
and ended up in Jurassic Park.
Last summer we enjoyed outstanding fishing for
halibut that ranged from 10 pounds on the small end to
50 plus pounds on the big end. We didn’t catch any true
“barn doors” but the action for solid keepers in the 30
pound class was excellent. When you halibut fish in the
Cook Inlet, two fish limits are the rule everyday and your
pair of fish will almost always be over 30 pounds each.
30’s and 40’s are “average” fish, and you have a great
chance of hooking up with something much bigger. My
personal best is 70 pounds and during the 2010 Fish
Sniffer trip we had a number of fish over 50. Our top fish
on that trip weighed in at 181!
In 2011 the halibut were our staple, but we also
enjoyed red hot action on massive trophy size lingcod,
great silver salmon fishing and we even got an
unexpected shot of king salmon action during our last
day on the water.
One of Captain Steve Smith’s client caught the current

Lauritzen’s Yacht Harbor: Home Of The Delta’s Only
Rat-L-Trap Catch And Release Striper Derby
If you were going to build a fishing focused marina in the
Delta, it would be hard to imagine a better location than the
one occupied by Lauritzen’s Yacht Harbor on the awesome San
Joaquin River virtually in the shadow of the Antioch Bridge.
If you head up river from the harbor, you’ll come to the famous
striper and black bass waters of Frank’s Tract. If you want a shot
at magnum size striper on a topwater plug, you only need to cross
the river and duck into Sherman Lake. If sturgeon are your meat,
you can get started right out in front of the harbor or you can
head down the river past Pittsburg and soak your diamond back
baits in Suisun Bay.
The bottom line is this…If you are an angler that loves fishing
the Delta, Lauritzen’s should be high on your list of launching
locations simply because it offers so many options for just about
every species of gamefish that call the Delta home.
Plugging for stripers is exceptionally popular in the
Lauritzen’s area, so it was fitting that the Delta’s one and only
3103
Rat-L-Trap only, catch and release striper derby was held at
Lauritzen’s back in November.
The inaugural derby, which the folks at Lauritzen’s hope to
make a yearly event, drew a total of 68 participants to compete for
cash and prizes. In the end George Street held off all competition
and took home the top prize of $548.75.
While the event was action packed and exciting, it also
provided funds to help protect the Delta. In all a total of $1,498.50
was raised and donated to Restore The Delta.
The Rat-L-Trap tournament turned out to be a big win for
anglers that love plugging for striped bass, but it proved to be an
even bigger win in terms of providing funds to fight for the future
on the California Delta, one of the world’s richest fisheries.
For more information about Lauritzen’s Yacht Harbor visit them
on the web at www.lauritzens.com. On the site you’ll find a lot of
information about the harbor and the services they provide and
you’ll also find a section of accurate, up to date fishing reports!

Stop By The Fish Sniffer Booth, Help Us Celebrate Our
30th Anniversary And Take Home Free Fishing Gear!
by Cal Kellogg
The title says it all. If you want to earn
the best incentives at the Sacramento
ISE Show, bar none, stop by the Fish
Sniffer booth. We are celebrating our 30
year anniversary and we’ve got some
awesome incentives to give away!
Of course our incentives come with
a subscription to the Fish Sniffer, the
hardest hitting, most in depth fishing
magazine on West Coast!
So what do we have to offer? I’ll
assume that since you are reading this
you already know that the Fish Sniffer
is published every other week, 26
times a year and that we cover both the
freshwater and saltwater fishing scenes
along with hunting here in the Golden
State and beyond. And I’m sure you
are aware that we provide a long list
of location specific fishing reports in
addition to fishing features, map features,
how to articles, conservation articles and
product reviews.
All this stuff is a given and you can
get it all by buying a subscription over
the phone, through the mail or online or
you can even buy the magazine one issue
at a time over the counter at one of our
hundreds of retail outlets. Yet if you buy
your subscription at this year’s ISE Show,
you’ll get all this great information, but
you’ll also share in all the great incentives
that we GIVE AWAY with subscriptions
purchased at the show. Heck, depending
on what sort of subscription commitment
you make, you could walk away from our
booth with upwards of $300 worth of free
gear!
This year, as always, we’ve got a
bunch of fishing rods to give away to
our supporters and as anyone that has
stopped by our ISE booth will certainly
attest our rods are not the low end
bargain basement models that some
outfits pass out.
This year we’ll be supplying our
subscribers with saltwater and freshwater
rods from Lamiglas as well as freshwater
and saltwater rods from Berkley. Kokanee
rods are always a big hit with our
subscribers. This year we’ll be offering
kokanee and trout trolling rods from
ISE-5
Berkley and we’ve wrangled a special
deal with Vance Staplin of Vance’s Tackle
to offer a line of his signature series cork
grip downrigger rods!
Do you need a knife? Who doesn’t?
Well, we are proud to be passing out top
of the line Kershaw fillet knives again this
year.
If there is one thing that anglers use
more than knives, it’s fishing line and
at this year’s ISE Show we are giving
premium P-Line in a variety of sizes to
everyone that purchases a subscription.
In addition to the line, we’ve also got
a supply of P-Line Pro Guide Pliers that
come with a belt sheath.
Dang it, I’m running out of space and
I’ve just scratched the surface. Stop by
the Fish Sniffer booth in the main fishing
building and say hello! We’ll show you
all or our rods and other incentives and
provide you with a subscription deal that
you just can’t beat.
About The Delta Chambers and
Visitors Bureau
If you want to discover the great fishing, hunting, boating and other
recreational opportunities that the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta has to offer,
visit the California Delta Chambers & Visitors Bureau booth at ISE Sacramento.
The Chamber is an organization of chambers of commerce, visitors bureaus,
businesses and boosters in the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta. The area, also called the “California Delta,” strives to enhance the enjoyment for
visitors to this unique 1,000-mile waterway, while striving to protect and preserve
the area’s fragile beauty.
The organization was established more than a quarter-century ago. Many
members of the chambers first came to the Delta on holiday or vacation, fell in
love with this boating and fishing paradise, and later established thier roots in
the Delta. Some first experienced this profuse array of waterways on a rental
houseboat, or on a fishing charter for sturgeon or striped bass; others rolled in on
RVs and liked the area’s hospitality.
The Delta is a fresh-water system primarily comprised of fertile agricultural
islands that sit below sea level, but are protected by a stout system of levees. It is
fed by five major rivers, including the Sacramento River and the San Joaquin River.
There is a remoteness to the lightly populated inner Delta. The lifestyle here is
decidedly laid back, a sort of Huck Finn kind of existence. Boating, fishing, and
camping are a way of life.
Some of the historic river towns are little changed from the Gold Rush era when
paddlewheel steamboats came piping their arrival with the steam-driven calliope.
Drawbridges yawn open to let boating traffic pass, you cross some waterways on
lumbering cable-drawn car ferries, the postman delivers mail by boat.
Although Sacramento and Stockton are at the Delta’s doorsteps, and San
Francisco, “Silicon Valley,” and the great valley city of Fresno are no more than a
two-hours drive from the California Delta, word about the attributes of this great
place has not been quick to spread. In a way, the river people appreciate that. It’s
gratifying to be privy to knowledge of a cool place that is not widely known. On
the other hand, people enjoy the Delta so much that the chambers want to show it
off to visitors.
For all its rural charm, the California Delta caters to visitors’ needs. It boasts
over 100 marinas and waterside resorts, full-hookup RV parks and campgrounds.
There are quaint waterside restaurants for dining, grocery stores for provisions,
bait and tackle shops, and over 50 boat launching facilities. Public parks and bankfishing sites are numerous.
For more information , visit the Delta Chambers on the web at www.

Bait Buttons: A Fishing Accessory
That Saves Anglers’ Money While
Helping Them Hook More Fish
by Cal Kellogg
When it comes to fishing, you can
have the best rods and reels, quality
line and the most advanced lures, but
as far as actually hooking fish goes,
presentation is key. If your presentation
is off, you’ll hook few fish no matter
how good your tackle is.
As anyone that reads my How To
column regularly knows, I favor a
keep it simple philosophy when it
comes to fishing, but every once in a
while a unique accessory comes along
that promises to make tried and true
presentations even more effective.
I became aware of such an accessory
at the Sacramento ISE Show last January
when I was formally introduced to Bait
Buttons. There was a buzz going around
the show about the new product. Despite
hearing the name a number of times, I
wasn’t sure what the product was used
for until I made my way to the Bait
Buttons booth. I wanted to see what all
the excitement was about.
I learned that Bait Buttons are 1/8 inch
diameter soft plastic wafer like disks that
can be slid onto hooks or lines to keep
things like baits, lures, indicators and
hooks properly positioned.
Bait Buttons are the brainchild of Dr.
Bill Schmunk, a dentist that lives in Fall
River Mills, California. When Schmunk
isn’t in the office taking care of dental
issues he prefers to be on north state
rivers in hot pursuit of steelhead.
Like a lot of innovations, the idea
for Bait Buttons came to Schmunk out
of the blue. The small plastic disks that
Schmunk came to dub Bait Buttons were
actually a component he used in his
practice when performing root canals.
Once things were wrapped up at
the office, Schmunk took some of the
plastic disks home and found that they
could indeed be slid onto hooks to keep
things like puff balls in place. Since the
disks were small and thin, getting them
onto the hook was difficult at best and
Schmunk surmised that if your hands
were cold and wet, they’d be next to
impossible to work with. Clearly the
disks would perform the desired task, the

challenge was making them user friendly.
Schmunk began collaborating with
a mechanical engineer and before long
they came up with a dispenser for the
disks that both houses a supply of
disks, keeping them clean and dry and
dispenses one disk at a time properly
positioned to be easily threaded onto a
hook.
Once a prototype dispenser was
developed, Schmunk spent a couple
years field-testing the product until he
was satisfied that both the disks and
dispenser were effective and easy to use.
Schmunk officially unveiled Bait Buttons
last December and the reviews have been

I picked up a supply of Bait Buttons
and a dispenser at the Sacramento ISE

with them ever since. There are a bunch
of different ways to use Bait Buttons
at present and more ways are being

something needs to be kept in place on

viable solution to the problem.

Join Bobby Barrack At The
Bass Tank For Coaching On
Fishing Frogs And More!
by Cal Kellogg
Fishing Snag Proof Frogs…It’s
exciting, it’s addicting and it’s one of the
very best ways to go if you are dedicated
to hooking trophy bass lurking around
and under heavy cover.
I still remember the first strike I ever
got on a Snag Proof Frog. I knew I was
playing with fire, but I didn’t care. I picked
up the heavy tackle, tied on a Snag Proof
Frog and started making casts. When that
first titanic surface explosion came the
bass got away without a scratch, but I was
firmly hooked.
Like a lot of anglers, one bite and I
became addicted to frog fishing and now
it’s frog fishing that I measure all other
bass fishing techniques and most other
freshwater fishing techniques against. The
reason for this is simple. In my opinion,
frog fishing for bass is among the most
exciting, adrenaline pumping forms of
fishing that the freshwater angler can
experience.
So who is it that’s responsible for the
frog fishing addiction that I share with a
whole bunch of other anglers? The Snag
Proof Company innovated the plastic frog
a long, long time ago, but it was Delta
bass pro Bobby Barrack that perfected
and popularized the frog fishing mania
that we see today.
Over the years Barrack has used Snag
Proof Frogs to catch untold dozens of
monster Delta largemouths. He’s also
helped the folks at Snag Proof perfect
the frog and develop new baits such as
Bobby’s Perfect Buzz Frog.
If you’d like an introduction to frog
fishing, Barrack-style, make plans to catch
his seminars at this years show. He’ll be
at the bass tank demonstrating techniques
and answering questions. Heck, if you
get lucky he might have an opening in
his schedule and you can book a trip with
him.
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing him
in action and I can tell you he is one
of the finest anglers on the water and
you’ll learn a lot either by attending
his seminars or by joining the “Frog Master” himself on the water.
Persuader American Angling
Introduces New ‘Imaged’
Ultraviolet Weedless Spoon
After over two years of testing and
research involving digital ingraining
and ultraviolet paints, Persuader
American Angling of Danville,
California, is introducing its new line of
Persuader ‘imaged” Ultraviolet Weedless
Spoons.
These spoons feature actual photo
images of three bait fish, i.e, shad, shiner
and crappie. Three images are finished in
heavy cover, it creates a fish attracting
wobble that entices ‘sure-thing’ bites.
This all happens because of a weedguard that helps to keep this lure from
getting hung-up in heavy cover. Soft plastic
trailers also work well with this bait.
Cliff Liddy, President of Persuader
American Angling, stated, “The
Persuader Imaged Ultraviolet Weedless
Spoon represents a new concept in this
natural color and three with chartreuse
background.
All spoons are available with
ultraviolet paint to enhance the vision
of fish in shaded or darker water. In
addition, all images are powder coated
to minimize product chipping. They are
available in both 1/4 oz. and 1/2 oz.
sizes.
This lure is extremely versatile in that
it can be used for several varieties of fish
including bass, stripers, walleye, muskies,
northern pike and redfish. Asthis lure
slips and slides through grass, brush and
category. Imaging and ultraviolet paint
truly lure the big lunkers hiding heavy
brush, timber or grass to attack this bait.”
Persuader American Angling also
manufactures a line of spinner baits, buzz
baits, jig baits, poppers, bird baits and soft
plastic baits, under the Persuader brand.

Xcelerator Diesel Programmer
A Great Addition To Your Truck
by Paul J. Kneeland.
I have been using an Xcelerator
Diesel programmer on my 2005 Chevy
Silverado pickup for the last several
months. It is a great addition for any
vehicle. I selected Level 4, which
added 160 horsepower and 240 foot
pounds of torgue to the stock DuraMax
output. What a tremendous difference
increased by 2 to 4 miles per gallon.
I just returned last week from a trip
to Medford, Oregon, to pick up the new
21’ Willie Raptor. I averaged 20.2 miles
per gallon going up to Meford without a
boat, and the return trip with the heavy
boat and dual axle trailer averaged 14.6
miles per gallon. That’s very good fuel
economy for a big, comfortable full size
diesel truck!
The Xcelerator Programmer is very
easy to use, and you can change your
tune back to stock, or to any level from
1 to 6 any time you wish. Simply plug it
into the trucks computer system under
the dash and you adjust it from there!
One caution for all you speed freaks
out there! You must keep an eye on your
exhaust temperatures when you add so
much horsepower and torque to your
stock system. The guys at MKM customs
will talk to you about all facets of the
increased performance of your truck, and
make sure everything is safe and under
control.
For more information on the
Xcelerator Diesel Programmer, and
other diesel performance products, call
MKM Customs in Roseville at (916)7729253 or see them on the web at www.

diesel truck for improved performance
and fuel mileage.
The Xcelerator for the Chevrolet
DuraMax diesel offers six different power
ranges, depending on your needs and
type of driving you do. It will increase
horsepower from a plus 40 to a plus 300,
and increase torque by 97 to 335 foot
pounds. The programmer also can adjust
the speedometer, adjust for different tire
sizes, gear ratios, and speed limiter. It can
also read and clear Diagnostic Trouble
Codes (DTC) with its on board diagnostic
system.
I am not a hot rodder, but anyone
appreciates more power from their
in performance! The big Silverado felt
more like a race car than a ¾ ton truck! It
would burn the tires from dead stop, and
go from zero to 60 mph in a snap!
My truck is hooked up to The Fish
Sniffer Willie boat almost all year. I
noticed a big performance increase both
with and without the boat behind the
truck. The main thing I was looking for
was increased fuel economy, especially
considering the price of diesel these days.
I keep track of all my mileage for
business, and I found the Xcelerator
increased my towing economy by 2 to
3 miles per gallon, depending on the
terrain. And my non-towing economy

Rawhide West: Wild Pig Headquarters
In Northern California!
A good deal, dare I say the vast
majority of hog hunting done in
California, takes place in the central
or southern part of the state. If you
live here in northern California you
have to take a long ride to the south to
shoot a hog, or resign yourself to eating
supermarket pork...Or do you?
While these assertions may have
had some validity in the past, they are
now way off the mark, due to the efforts
of Keith Conger and his guides, Kevin
Judenal and Garret Gross. You see,
Keith and his guides run a company
called Rawhide West and manage a
hunting ranch east of Redding. Keith and
company are committed to providing
Norcal hunters with a top notch hog
hunting opportunity.
“Our ranch spans about 5,000 acres and
we manage it for quality boar hunting,”
related Conger. “Quality is important
to us, so we limit the harvest of hogs on
our property to 50 boars per year. Many
of the boars our hunters harvest sport
tusks that are from 1 to 2 inches in length
and about 95% of our hogs are jet black.
Occasionally we’ll see one with a red
tint, but what you won’t see is a bunch of
multi-colored hogs that look like they’d
be more at home at the state fair.”
“All of our hunting is done on a spot
and stalk basis and we can tailor the
difficulty of the hunt to meet anyone’s
needs including providing opportunities
for handicapped hunters. We guarantee
that everyone that books a hunt with
us will have a 100% shot opportunity
with their rifle at a boar that is less than
100 yards away or if they choose to
hunt with a bow they will have a 100%
shot opportunity at 40 yards or less.
Basically I’m guaranteeing a quality shot
opportunity whether you hunt with a rifle
or bow,” pledged Conger.
“One of the problems with some
hog ranches comes in the form of
management. A lot of guys would like to
manage their hog population like we do,
but the problem is that on most ranches
the hogs are not year around residents.
You can’t manage a population effectively
if the hogs are off your ranch for part
of the year. Our ranch has year around
water and irrigated pastures, meaning
that our hogs stick around all year long,”
disclosed Conger.
If you’ve got the itch to harvest a big,
bad boar or you want to introduce your
wife, daughter or son to hunting in a
situation that will set them up for success,
get in touch with the folks at Rawhide
West. Not only will Keith and his guides
work hard to make your Norcal dream
hunt a reality, but they’ll do it at a super
affordable price.
Once you’ve put your pig on the
ground, Keith and company will take it
to their cleaning station for cleaning and
skinning and they’ll hang it in their onsite
locker for cooling.
Want more information? You can
check them out on the web and view

Shasta Tackle: For Innovative Trout
And Kokanee Tackle At Sac ISE!
Anyone who knows Gary Miralles of
the Shasta Tackle Company knows he’s
not one to set back and relish his success,
even though his Cripplures, Hum Dingers
and Sling Blade dodgers have become
“household names” for trout and kokanee
anglers throughout the west. Instead
Miralles is always experimenting and
coming up with new innovations.
The Pee Wee Spinner Hoochie has
made a ripple in the world of kokanee
fishing. As you can glean from the name,
it is a combination of a spinner blade with
one of Shasta Tackle’s already renowned
hoochies and the combination has proven
to be a deadly one for kokanee residing in
California and Oregon waters. These lures
are offered in both Glow and UV colors.
The only dodger Shasta Tackle offers is
the Sling Blade and after so many years and
so many fish to its credit, you’d think that
Gary would leave his hands off his deadly
dodger, but of course that isn’t Gary’s style.
He’s added special foil finish blades to
his Sling Blade lineup. According to Gary,
the combination of iridescent reflective
tape and a bright paint overcoat create an
incredible amount of flash and color.
New for this year are Gary’s new
Flasher Releases. Basically it’s a down
rigger release that sports a trio of willow
leaf blades that rotate as you troll. Think
ball trolls, but picture them working on
a near vertical plain and you’ve got the
picture of Gary’s radical new releases.
Lot’s of times it’s the little things
that make for angling success and Gary
recently started offering a tiny product
that will undoubtedly have a big impact.
Shasta Tackle Teaser grubs are just that,
tin ¼ inch long curly tail grubs in a
variety of colors.
These grubs can be rigged on the
hooks of spoons, spinners or kokanee
bugs or they can be rigged on a small
ISE-11
hook and trolled behind a dodger alone.
They will also be effective for stream
fishing when rigged on a small hook,
teamed with split shot and drifted
through likely looking holding water.
To see all of Gary’s new products, plus
all his tried and true hardware in the form
of Kazi Minnows, Kok-A-Nuts, Scorpion
Spinners, Cripplures and more drop by the
Shasta Tackle booth at the Sacramento ISE
show or visit Shasta Tackle on the web at
www.shastatackle.com.
For kokanee fishing a watermelon colored Shasta Tackle Sling Blade dodger teamed with a
hoochie or spinner is often a winning combination.

Hook & Ladder Guide Service is owned
and operated by professional Guide Cliff
Spediacci. Cliff and his wife Shirley are
full time residents of Eagle Lake and,
weather permitting, are available through
November to put your offering in front of
big beautiful Eagle Lake rainbows!
Having fished California lakes and
reservoirs for over 40 years Cliff and
Shirley are eager to share their passion and
knowledge with you. Cliff takes a veteran’s
approach to fishing. He keeps things simple
when the bite is good and experiments until he
finds what works when things get tough. Yet
on Eagle, one of the West’s best trout fisheries,
tough days are generally spread pretty far apart.
On a typical day on the water Cliff will get
you your fish while trolling Sep’s grubs slow
and shallow. When the grub action slacks
off, Cliff will pull several different things
including soft plastic minnows, threaded
worms, flies or spoons.
During the 2011 season, Cliff’s clients
caught many limits of trout and few of the
rainbows weighed less than 2.25 pounds.
On the other end of the scale, a lot of trout
weighing in at or over 3 pounds came into
Cliff’s boat. If you’ve fished Eagle Lake
before you know that hooking a 3 pound
Eagle Lake rainbow is like having 3 pounds
of dynamite at the end of your line!
Cliff will be at this year’s Sacramento ISE

and dorado.
Beyond the fantastic fishing, customers aboard the
Excel can relax in the most comfortable and spacious
lounge ever to be enjoyed by long-range anglers. For its
comforts and conveniences, the Excel is unsurpassed.
The Excel is the only long range vessel to offer WIFI to its
anglers.
Fishermen aboard the Excel will find ample room
along the rails, more space for tackle storage, and more
bait-carrying capacity than any other San Diego longrange boat.
Rental tackle is available or bring your own gear
aboard. If you are a discriminating angler who demands
the best from a multi-day fishing vacation into Mexican
waters and beyond, the Excel is for you!
For the first-time fisherman or the out-of-town visitor

rental packages of tackle and gear specifically suited for
long-range fishing. All gear is in excellent condition and
reasonably priced.
Terminal tackle appropriate to the trip length on board
the Excel is available at shore side prices. For those of
you traveling from far away places, Fisherman’s Landing
offers a UPS option. Send your gear/tackle UPS and it
will be waiting for you on the Excel when you arrive.
While the Excel has all of the modern day amenities of
home, the crew hascompiled lists of suggested gear and
tackle to bring along.

3-6 Day Trips
Trips of 3 to 6 days duration aboard the Excel typically range
south to offshore tuna grounds, possibly Guadalupe Island,
or along the Baja Coast, visiting such islands as San Martin,
Geronimo, Cedros and San Benitos.
During the late spring, expect the action to be best for
Yellowtail, Yellowfin Tuna and a variety of other species
around the islands, with the good chance of intercepting
schools of Bluefin Tuna and Albacore. Summer into the fall is
prime time for migratory runs of all tuna species. Yellowtail
and Dorado are also found around floating kelp paddies.
7-10 Day Trips
Our 7 to 10-day trips offer the most variety in fishing action
as we explore the southwestern Baja coastline from San
Pablo to Magdalena Bay, often with a run out to Alijos Rocks.
These trips are usually scheduled for early summer, and
again throughout the fall months. Fishing along the inside
“ridge” is outstanding for big Wahoo, Yellowtail, Dorado,
Yellowfin Tuna and Marlin, with Pargo and giant Grouper
being the reward for those dropping bait to the bottom.
Alijos Rocks is a hot spot for Yellowfin Tuna in the 100-pound
class, Wahoo, and world record size Yellowtail.
12+ Day Trips
12+ day trips aboard the Excel target the very finest Yellowfin
Tuna and Wahoo fishing in the world, ranging over 1,000
miles south to such exotic locales as Hurricane Bank, Puerto
Vallarta, Cleofus Bank, or even beyond the remote Clipperton
atoll. From these prolific tropical waters, the Excel has
returned with numerous record catches for his passengers,
including the IGFA all-tackle world record Yellowfin Tuna
which stood for many years and only recently beat.

Fun In The Baja Sun For
The Entire Family, Hotel
Buena Vista Style!
It used to be so easy. But now mom
wants to sleep late, shop, see the sights
and do “touristy” things. One kid wants
to swim from dawn to dusk, scuba
dive, hang out and get his mind off the
rapidly approaching new school year.
The other kid only wants to snorkel,
work on her sun tan and maybe meet a
boy or two. And dad? He wants to catch
a marlin, a tuna, a dorado and everything
else that swims long and fast. And he
wants to be sure that everything is cool
with his wife and kids while he’s out
fishing. And he doesn’t want to break the
bank while doing it.
The answer is the 60 Mediterranean-

the sparkling blue Sea of Cortez, 35 miles

and 70 miles southeast of the State

premier sport fishing, outdoor adventure

Hotel Buena Vista Beach Resort is
situated on top of a large natural hot

– purer than bottled. Not only is the
tap water 100% safe for drinking, but
according to many past guests, it is highly
therapeutic.
The name of the game at the Hotel
Beuna Vista Beach Resort is fishing in the
Sea of Cortez, what author John Steinbeck
called “the world’s greatest fish trap.”
For a big game angler, whether
the angler fishes once a year or every
weekend, the resort’s sport fishing pier is
just a few steps across the beach from the
well appointed guest rooms.
With an average fleet speed of
23-knots, anglers get to the offshore
fishing grounds faster, smoother and
ahead of the pack. “We don’t want to
lose power – nobody does – but with our
twin engine boats we offer a far greater
degree of safety in an emergency,” said

Berkley NanoFil Recieves Multiple Awards At 2012
ICAST New Products Showcase
Berkley NanoFil was awarded with
the Best of Show and Best New Line
Awards at this year’s ICAST show in Las
Vegas, Nev. Berkley NanoFil is the first
uni-filament line. NanoFil is optimized
for use on spinning reels. It provides the
angler with effortless casting, strength
and superb sensitivity all in one smalldiameter line.
casting distance all in one small diameter
line. Winning the 2012 Best of Show and
Best Line awards is a great honor for the
entire team. Our partnership with DSM
Dyneema and continued commitment to
enhancing the fishing experience makes
this line truly spectacular.”
NanoFil line lends itself to a wide
variety of techniques, but it is most
useful when anglers desire an ultra
small diameter line for greater casting
yet also need maximum sensitivity to
feel the subtlest of bites. Anglers will
also recognize enhanced accuracy. With
NanoFil, anglers can enjoy the feel of light
tackle action for a wide range of species,
yet still detect even the softest pickups
and land what is on the end of the line.
For best knot strength results use
the NanoFil Knot, a “Double Palomar”
that increases knot strength by over 15%
that of the standard Palomar knot. For
attaching leaders to NanoFil, a Double
Albright knot is recommended.
Available in pound tests ranging from
1 to 12 pounds with super thin diameters
of 0.001” to 0.008”, Berkley NanoFil is
available in 150, 300- and 1500-yard
spools.
For more information about NanoFil
or the rest of Berkley’s lineup of fine
products check them out on the web at

Minn Kota’s Innovative
i-Pilot Is Now Even Better!
NanoFil was recognized by the voters
as the top new product overall and best in
line category for 2012 by the select ICAST
attendees, which include active editorial
journalists and retailers.
NanoFil is made out of gel-spun
polyethylene, much like a superline. The
line consists of hundreds of the highest
level of Dyneema nanofilaments that
are molecularly linked and shaped into
a unified filament fishing line. NanoFil
feels and handles like the smoothest
monofilament while delivering superlinetype strength.
“This line has been in the making for
nearly several years,” said Clay Norris,
Sr. Berkley Product Manager. “NanoFil
is the ultimate spinning line for anglers
that demand the best. Anglers now have
sensitivity, strength and the ultimate in
One of the most significant fishing
innovations in recent history, Minn
Kota’s i-Pilot wireless GPS trolling
system has been enhanced to provide
even more functionality and reliability. The updated i-Pilot includes additional
recording capacity and a new remote
with improved functionality and
enhanced durability.
“Anglers have told us how i-Pilot has
changed the way they fish,” Minn Kota
Marketing Director Joe Brown said. “We
have also listened to feedback on how we
could improve i-Pilot. We have applied that
input to make a great product even better.”
The most significant enhancement to
i-Pilot is the new remote. The LCD screen
and function icons are 20 percent larger
and the keypad has improved visibility,
durability, and tactile feel. The new
remote has a slimmer, more ergonomic
design as well as an easy-access battery
compartment.
In addition, i-Pilot is now capable of
storing a total of six Spot-Lock and six
Record A Track locations compared to three
locations each on the original version.
Available for select saltwater and
freshwater models, the new i-Pilot can
be purchased already installed on select
Minn Kota Terrova™, PowerDrive V2™,
Riptide® ST or Riptide SP bow-mount
trolling motors, or as an accessory. The
new remote can be purchased separately
for use with the original i-Pilot systems
but will not include the additional storage
space.
So what are the key features of i-Pilot
and what do these features do in practical
terms?
Spot-Lock works like an electronic
anchor, holding the boat in place. If the
boat drifts more than five feet from the
Spot-Lock location, i-Pilot will activate
the trolling motor to keep the angler on
the designated spot. It automatically
corrects for wind, waves, current and
drift. The “recall” feature for Spot-Lock
provides the ability to return to that
specific location at a later time. Up to six
Spot-Lock locations can be stored at a
time.
Record A Track allows an entire
fishing track, up to a remarkable two
miles in length, to be stored to memory
(up to six separate tracks). When
you want to retrace a course in either
direction, i-Pilot’s playback functions will
automatically guide your boat along the
track. Cruise Control maintains real-time onthe-water boat speed in one-tenth mileper-hour increments. This precise speed
control allows the angler to dial in bait
presentations in trolling applications.
Advanced AutoPilot™ utilizes GPS
technology to maintain the boat path on
a true heading while adjusting for wind,
waves, current and side-drift. This results
in improved and more accurate tracking
compared to traditional compass-based
systems.
CoPilot™ is Minn Kota’s wireless
trolling motor control system and is
integrated into the i-Pilot remote control.
Anglers can control speed and steering
from anywhere in the boat.

Ultra Light Trolling Gear
From Sep’s Pro Fishing
Sep’s Pro Fishing has been around for over a quarter of a
century and they are one of the world leaders when it comes to
top notch trolling gear for freshwater anglers.
A lot has happened in the world of trout and kokanee trolling
over the past 25 years and Sep’s has been at the center of the
evolution that moved anglers from using heavy rods, lead core
line and massive cowbell flasher to downriggers, wispy soft
action rods and ultralight, low drag hardware.
Leo and Dana Van Sistine, the brain trust driving Sep’s Pro
Fishing forward, continue to offer a full line of tried and true
gear for trollers, but they also continue to offer up new products
to address certain challenges or to fill certain niches that anglers
encounter on the water.
One of Sep’s newest and most exciting products is the Strike
Master dodger. The Strike Master looks just like a Sep’s Side Kick
Dodger, except it’s larger and heavier than a Side Kick. A Side
Kick measures about 1.5 inches by 2 inches.
The Strike Master is 2.5 inches by 3 inches. Since Strike Masters
are larger and heavier than Side Kicks they tend to run a bit
deeper and have a different action.
I use Side Kicks for situations where a very slow presentation
is called for and routinely team them with Sep’s Grubs, trolling
flies or pieces of threaded worm and I use Strike
Masters in much the same way except that I’m
able to troll them a bit faster.
Strike Masters are available in three different
colors, chrome, chrome/brass and watermelon.
No discussion of Sep’s products would be
complete without touching on their herring
dodgers and flashers. I don’t know a trout or
salmon troller that doesn’t have a selection of
Sep’s dodgers. They come in a myriad of different
colors and are offered in 4 different sizes ranging
from 4 to 8 inches in length.
It seems that everyone has their own favorite
color when it comes to Sep’s dodgers. My favorite
quartet is silver, gold, watermelon and fruit salad.
Some folks complain that Sep’s dodgers are
only good when trolled at extremely slow speeds.
While it is true that if you troll them too fast they
will spin as will any other dodger, there is a little
trick you can use to make them perform well when

About Shogun Sportfishing
The Shogun is one of San Diego’s premier sportfishing vessels. The boat is 92 feet long and features
a 30 foot beam. This exceptionally wide beam affords passengers a huge deck area and a much more
stable fishing platform.
The Shogun is full of features that will make your fishing adventure comfortable and successful. All of
the Shogun’s staterooms are air conditioned and fully carpeted. Other stateroom features include hot and
cold running water, reading lights and ample storage.
The boat boasts 5 heads and 3 showers. The galley seats 32 passengers and is equipped with air
conditioning, a TV and a DVD player.
The Shogun’s on deck bait tanks hold 160 scoops of live bait and the below deck tanks hold an
additional 200 scoops.
The boat can take on 16,000 gallons of fuel, giving it a 2,500 mile cruising range. It also carries 6,000
gallons of fresh water
When you bring your catch aboard it will be stored in “just caught” condition in the Shogun’s 20 ton
refrigerated fish hold.
In 2012, the Shogun has a full roster of fishing scheduled. During the summer 3 to 5 day trips will be
the order of the day with albacore, bluefin and dorado being the targets.
When fall rolls around thing get serious and most trips are 7 to 12 days in length. This is the time of
the year when you might catch just about anything including yellowfin, yellowtail, dorado, wahoo and
even billfish.
Winter is the time for monsters on the Shogun. The trips are long, ranging from 12 to 15 days. A lot of
different species can be caught on the winter trips, but the focus is on boating big tuna in the 100 to 300
pound class.
For more information about the Shogun, you can stop by their booth at this years show, or you can

trolled a little bit faster than ordinary.
Sep’s dodgers are super responsive and that’s
what makes them want to roll if you troll them too
fast. You can kill some of the dodger’s responsiveness
by knotting a short piece of monofilament to the
swivel on the rear of the dodger.
Pinch a split shot on the mono right up against
the swivel and trim of the excess line exited from
the split shot. This added weight slows down the
kick of the dodger and allows you to troll them
at higher speeds. This is good to know when fish
want an offering moving a bit quicker than usual.
These days it seems every angler on the water has
dodger fever. Dodgers catch fish to be sure, but you
are selling your trolling spread short if you overlook
flashers. Sep’s offers Mini Micro Flashers utilizing
either willow leaf or Colorado style blades.
These flashers put out a bunch of fish attracting
vibration while creating minimal drag. They are
just what the doctor ordered when trout and
kokanee turn up their snouts at baits pulled
behind dodgers.
The Sep’s lineup boasts highly effective lures,
flies and components like beaded trolling swivels
and downrigger releases, but since I’m running
out of space, we’ll have to talk about them later
on, or you can check them out on the Sep’s
website at www.sepsprofishing.com.
If you find yourself at the Sacramento ISE
show, drop by the Sep’s booth. Not only can
you get all the Sep’s gear you need at the booth
at super show pricing, but you’ll also get all
the fishing advice you could want since there
are generally several Sep’s pro staff guides in
attendance that will be happy to answer any and
all questions.

Welcome To Royal Polaris Sportfishing
The Royal Polaris is considered to be the finest
long-range Sportfishing vessel in the world. From
summer albacore, to yellowtail and wahoo, to giant
yellowfin tuna, the Royal Polaris’s catch record is
unmatched.
The crew and owners of the Royal Polaris especially
welcome those individuals making their first longrange trip. When you fish the Royal Polaris, you benefit
from every advantage with our unmatched service,
speed of vessel (which maximizes fishing time), and
the added comfort enjoyed aboard the finest riding
sportfisher in San Diego’s long-range fleet.
The top priority of the Royal Polaris’s crew is to
make your trip a memorable and happy experience.
They guarantee the finest service in the fleet. Owners
Frank LoPreste, Roy Rose and Billy Santiago, along
with crew members Dharyl Shelbourne, Aaron
Barnhill, Cole Byron, Eddie Felarca, John Collins
and chefs Anthony Sardina, James Wagar and Brett
Wilkinson offer unmatched expertise in all aspects of
long-range fishing.
This outstanding crew is well known for leading
the industry in its innovative fishing methods, and is
always happy to share that knowledge at the rail.
The Royal Polaris runs three distinctly different
types of trip, the summer trip, the fall trip and the
winter trip.
Hotel Buena Vista Resort
Summer trips are three to five days in duration and
target offshore albacore, bluefin tuna, and dorado. On
the same trip you will most likely fish one of Mexico’s
majestically beautiful islands, such as Guadalupe,
Cedros or the three Benitos Islands. At these
Locations you will find yellowfin tuna to 100 pounds,
yellowtail, white sea bass and halibut.
Fall trips are typically 10 days long. On a 10 day
trip you will have seven to eight days of fishing on
the Pacific side of the Baja Peninsula. These trips are
very popular because you have the opportunity to
catch all the major species that swim Baja waters,
including yellowfin tuna, wahoo, yellowtail, dorado,
pargo, grouper, amberjack, and marlin (to be
released). You will fish legendary spots like Alijos
Rocks, Uncle Sam Bank, 23- Fathom spot, Thetis Bank,
Potato Bank and Finger Bank.
Winter trips start in December and target wahoo
and yellowfin tuna from 100 to 300 pounds plus. You
will fish Hurricane Bank. Roy Rose Bank, and the
areas outside the Revillagigedo Islands. Make sure
you make your reservations early, as these trips tend
to fill up quickly.

fishing. Outfitted for both conventional and saltwater fly-fishing,
each boat is skippered by a fly-fishing-friendly captain. New Penn International 50-wide and 30-wide reels are
available on all boats at a modest extra charge per angler in
addition to precision fish-fighting Okuma reels.
And, when the day is done, the hotel now has its own in-house
vacuum sealing machine to airtight pack your catch, ensuring no
freezer burn. Previously, anglers wanting fish vacuum-packed
needed to take their catch to town.
For the snorkeler or scuba diver – whether beginner or
experienced – the hotel is a short distance by boat from Cabo
Pulmo, the world renowned Mexican National Underwater
Park. Divers may swim with and photograph part of the area’s
undersea world of coral, brilliantly-colored tropical fish, game
fish, predators and more.
The social hub of Buena Vista Beach Resort is the swim-up
bar under the giant palapa at the pool. The beautiful fresh-water
pool is the perfect place to unwind after a hard day of fishing or
touring. It’s also a great place to spend an afternoon under an
umbrella reading a book.
As for the hotel’s beach, Buena Vista Beach Resort has one
of the most spectacular and safe swimming beaches in all of
the East Cape/Los Cabos areas. Located at the south end of
Las Palmas Bay, the waters are calm and so clear you can see
bait fish swimming by as you wade in the warm
water. There are hot springs right offshore. When
you walk over them, you’ll feel the heat coming
from below the sand. These hot springs make an
evening swim in the moonlight a not-to-be-missed
experience.
For the more adventuresome, the hotel staff
offers a full compliment of tours to a hidden
tropical oasis, waterfalls, Indian rock paintings,
birds and other wildlife, Spanish missions and
museums.
As for food, the hotel’s selections and service
are legendary. During peak fishing season,

dinner service; however during lower occupancy
weekdays and the rest of the year (when things
at Cal Expo
are a bit more relaxed in a South of the Border
Tradition), the hotel will provide full menu service
at the same price.
Menu items include a full array of Mexican and
Continental dishes from carne asada to fettuccine
Alfredo, beef fajitas to luscious double-cut pork
chops.
“Certain lobster, steak and shrimp dishes will
still be available on Specialty Menu prices, but all
other entrees are offered at the standard package
rates,” said Valdez.

VOL. 31 • ISS. 3
Salamander Sinkers allow anglers
to fish fast flowing, rock-laden rivers
without fear of snags. An angler using
various cast lengths, fishing the bay will
cover large areas and present the bait to
numerous fish by allowing the current to
move the sinker across the bottom.
This sinker doesn’t bounce in current
like a jig; the bait remains at a constant
level and speed semi-independent of the
sinker. Another feature is that the angler
can control the action of the bait by
applying slight movement on the rod as
it drifts in the current. Its cylinder design
will slide across obstruction with ease.
Attaching a Styrofoam floating rig to the
leader will suspend the bait off the bottom
where the fish can see it and it prevents
fouling.
Other applications include using
it as a bottom bouncer. Some anglers
have attached a four-foot leader with a
floating minnow to fish deep water where
crankbaits can’t reach. It is excellent when
trolling for stripers and other fish. This
application works great when the sinker
comes in contact with a rocky bottom.
This enhanced Carolina rig sinker is
great for largemouth and smallmouth bass.
Salamander Sinkers incorporated the best
features of the Carolina rig and improved
on them to introduce a new fishing system
that will catch more fish. This design
reduces line fray caused by the egg sinker
sliding on the pole line. Use it with any
bait that works with Carolina Rigs. This
sinker is Snag Resistant, is made of steel
(no lead) and is weight-adjustable.
Due to it’s snag resistant qualities the
Salamader Sinker also works great as a
drop shot weight.
Salamander Sinkers can be use for
steelhead and salmon too.
Salamander Sinkers offer anglers reduced
snags while using techniques like drop
shotting.
Photo by CAL KELLOGG, Fish Sniffer Staff.
Attach fish eggs (roe) to a salmon hook
and let the sinker slide in the current past
your quarry. Attach a fly to the leader and
catch trout in swift water. By adjusting
the weights inside the sinker the angler
can control the speed of the sinker as the
current carries it.
These sinkers can be used in fresh or
saltwater and will catch all species of
fish. The uses of the Salamander Sinkers
are only limited by the imagination of the
angler smart enough to give them a try.
For next rockfish season heavy weight
Salamander Sinkers will be on the market.
They should be a boon for anglers that
enjoy working the crags from lingcod and
rockfish.

Phenix Rods Offers Sensitivity,
Strength And Multitude Of Selections
by Ernie Marlan
Diamond, Hybrid, Inshore Assassin. The Freshwater
category offers several options which include: Ultra MBX,
Ultra MBX Classic, Crankbait, Flipping, Swimbait and
Recon Series.
Most of you who read the Fish Sniffer know that I love
to fish for both striped bass and largemouth bass. While
fishing for these, I have especially taken a liking to the
Phenix MBX Classic 707 MH 7’7”, 8 - 17 lb. rod while on
the water, for several reasons. The first is that this MBX
Classic is very light and well balanced which allows me to
throw this rod all day without becoming sore or fatigued.
Second Annual
Raahauge’s Fish Sniffer
Bird Shoot Announced!
by Cal Kellogg
3103
The Fish Sniffer staff can’t wait to get back over to Dunnigan
to visit Linc Raahauge’s Pheasant, Chukar and Sporting Clays
Club. Raahauge’s offers the finest looking game birds you’ll
find at any bird hunting club and it’s surprisingly inexpensive
to spend a day hunting at this outstanding facility.
Linc Raahauge’s Pheasant, Chukar and Sporting Clays Club
is owned and operated by Terry Raahauge. Based on his lifelong
experience helping to operate and running gamebird clubs I
sometimes wonder if he doesn’t have pheasant blood coursing
through his veins.
Terry’s club consists of 2,400 acres spread across both flat fields
and rolling hills. On crisp blue sky mornings the golden hills and
cackling roosters lull you into a sense that you might actually
be visiting the much-storied pheasant hunting grounds in the
Dakotas rather than California’s Sacramento Valley!
The Sacramento ISE show is always a big event for Terry. He
usually rolls out a great deal at the show that bird hunters have
a tough time passing up and this year will be no exception. This
year, you can stop by Terry’s booth and purchase 3 pheasants and
4 chukars for $137…That’s less than $20 per bird!
Late this winter, on March 10 to be exact, I’ll be hosting a hunt
at Raahauge’s for Fish Sniffer supporters. I’ll be bringing out a
bunch of prizes and Terry will be offering special event pricing
along with a BBQ lunch. I hosted our first annual Raahauge’s
hunt last spring and we all had an outstanding time.
I’ll be writing more about the up coming Fish Sniffer shoot
down the road. If you’d like more information about it in the short
term or if you have any questions about any aspect of Terry’s
operation stop by his booth at this year’s show, visit Raahauge’s
on web at www.lincraahauges.com or give Terry Raahauge a call
at (530) 724-0552 and talk to Mr. Pheasant himself!
ISE-21
The second is that this rod is also very sensitive but
yet still has a great backbone. The smaller fish that are
hooked will put up a good fight and yet when a larger
fish gets hooked, the rod still has the strength to handle
and control the fish with no problem at all.
When I am fishing for stripers, I can throw a swimbait,
rip bait, topwater bait or even drop a spoon. At the same
time, when I am bass fishing I don’t hesitate to throw a
plastic bait or a jig. The Phenix MBX Classic will handle
them all.
Phenix has recently introduced a new Freshwater
Series called the Recon which I’ve heard great things
about. I am looking forward to checking them out at the
International Sportsman’s Expo in Sacramento.
If you want to see a Phenix rod, I would suggest that
you stop by their booth at the show. You can also visit
them online at http://www.phenixrods.com or give them
a call at 1-877-2Phenix.

Vessel Assist: A
Boater’s Necessity That
is Often Overlooked
by Ernie Marlan
It’s that time of year again when many of us tinker
with our gear and begin considering what we may
want or need to update and what additional gear
we’d like for the New Year. Many are considering
new rods and reels, new boats and many other
accessories that coincide with our fishing and
boating hobbies. Once you’re on the water, the worst happens and
you run into unexpected boat trouble. Maybe the
batteries didn’t survive the winter, maybe you just
hit something floating down the river. Whatever it is,
something has gone wrong and you can’t get back to
where you came from or where you need to be.
In most cases there are enough boats on the water
and more than likely someone will help you out of the
situation you are in. However are you going to gamble
and take your chances that someone will be in the area
and willing to help you when you need it? If you are
on the water enough, you know that there are plenty of
times when you’re the only boat in the vicinity.
Often times, you don’t see another boat for most of
the day, especially at this time of year when it’s cold
and there are fewer boats on the water.
Faced with a situation like this, you could call your
buddy to drive his boat to the water to come find you.
Thankfully there’s a better choice. That is to call
Captain Philip Delano of Vessel Assist. Captain
Phillip is very familiar with the area and will know
how to find you and get you out of your sticky
situation and home safely.
Here is how you prepare for the unfortunate,
which won’t cost you much money at all. For $58 a
year, you can have the peace of mind knowing that
Captain Philip, will be ready to give you a tow or the
assistance that you need, when you
need it. Included in this $58 annual
membership fee is unlimited towing
for the Delta and all other freshwater
lakes and rivers nationwide.
Keep in mind, this small fee is for
members only. If you decide to wait
until something like this happens then
you can expect to pay anywhere from
$250-$350 per hour for a service like
this, depending on time of day and the
weather conditions.

Kokaneemart.com…Quality Products
With Exceptional Value And Service
Kokaneemart.com is a specialty tackle shop for
kokanee fishing. They offer unique, high-quality
products, with exceptional value and service. Ric Brown, founder and president of Kokaneemart,
along with his staff, is a long time Kokanee fisherman
who is “hooked” on fishing, catching, harvesting and
enjoying the delicious, hard fighting kokanee salmon.
Ric has been fishing for kokanee salmon for over 25
years, all over California and the West. He has fished in
tournaments, made my own lures (some that have even
caught fish!), and tried most every combination possible
to try and understand what makes the intriguing and
often frustrating sockeye bite. Pound for pound, Ric
doesn’t think there is a better reward in the world of
fishing than hooking, fighting and landing one of these
acrobatic fresh-water landlocked salmon.
He wanted to find, test and offer the finest products
available that he has used himself to catch fish.
Kokaneemart’s products are made of the highest
quality components by kokanee fishermen and guides.
The quality and consistency of their lures makes them
unique not only in their ability to catch kokanee, but also
as quality items that can be used for many years and
continue to produce results.
In a world where depth, color, speed and action seem
to change almost daily, Kokaneemart offers what Ric

considers to be the most productive products on the
market today.
“Fishing for kokanee can be a challenge and a lot
of fun. Keeping up with the latest in kokanee fishing
technology can be a bigger challenge but can often be
even more fun. At Kokaneemart we try to reduce that
challenge by finding and testing the newest and most
effective products in the market,” said Brown.
Kokaneemart is also a resource for kokanee fishing,
providing fishing tips, hot-bite reports, and even a place
to share recipes. The folks at Kokaneemart hope that
you’ll look at Kokaneemart.com like your local specialty
tackle shop. Ric wants it to be a place where you can share
ideas, pictures of your recent successes, browse for new
products, or just cruise the virtual aisles getting ready for
your next weekend adventure.

The Abu Garcia Revo Line Up:
Performance And Price Make
It The Favorite Baitcaster In
Fish Sniffer Country!
by Cal Kellogg
It wasn’t that long ago when the folks
at Abu Garcia started a revolution with
the introduction of their Revo series of
low profile baitcasting reels.
The innovation packed Revo is the
fastest low profile reel the Abu Garcia
company has ever produced, but it’s also
one on of their toughest reels. The Revo’s
toughness and cranking power emanates
from its oversized brass main gear,
dubbed the Duragear.
In addition to being tough, all the reels
in the Revo lineup are also extremely
smooth as a result of their innovative
Carbon Matrix drag system. The Revos
are designed with aluminum components
for lightweight performance and lasting
durability. Combine all this form a
function with a price point well below
$300 and it’s easy to understand why the
Revo has taken the baitcaster market by
storm!
Early, the Revo lineup basically
consisted of three reels, the S, SX and
STX. The SX and STX models feature a
Linear Magnetic Brake system that allows
anglers a wide range of adjustments to
fine tune the reels for any application.
In addition, the STX model features an
Everslik coated pinion shaft and pawl,
which dramatically reduces friction for
enhanced casting, while improving the
durability of these components. The STX
also features the innovative Infini Spool II
system, which is separated from the drive
train and minimizes friction for optimal
performance, even with the lightest
tackle.
Over the past several years I have
fished extensively with both the SX
and STX and I can’t praise these reels
enough. My first Revo was an SX. It just
so happens that my SX is setting next
to my desk as I write these words. I’ve
torture tested this reel on everything from
big rockfish and lingcod, to stripers, to
black bass and it has never given me any
trouble what so ever.
I’ve never lubricated it, I’ve never
cleaned it other than rinsing it off with
freshwater after using it in saltwater and
it just keeps on going strong. Despite
hammering lingcod on it with the drag
virtually locked down while using 30
pound braid the drag is as smooth as it
was when the reel came out of the box.
The spool rotates so smoothly that I can
flip a quarter ounce jig into the waste
paper basket setting next to our copy
machine about 12 feet away while setting
at my desk (the office staff loves it when
I start pitching lures around our work
area!)
After I got my SX I picked up an STX
with a 7.1 to 1 gear ratio. It has proven to
be every bit as reliable as the SX. I’ve used
it for halibut fishing in San Francisco Bay
and tossing plastic frogs for black bass
in addition to firing big Pencil Poppers
and Swimbaits for big delta stripers. Not
VOL. 31 • ISS. 3
being Mr. Maintenance I’ve done little to
the STX beyond spooling it with 50 pound
braid and rinsing it off occasionally
and it provides me with “good as new”
performance.
These days the Revo lineup features
9 different models. The S, SX and STX
are still going strong, but now there is
the Inshore, a Revo tailored to the needs
of saltwater anglers. For guys that hunt
for monsters with swimbaits and other
offerings there is the Revo Toro complete
with a clicker and the large line capacity
of a round baitcaster. I own a pair of
Toro’s and they are horses. I’ve caught
stripers up to 18 pounds while trolling
with the big Toro and I can tell you it is
up to just about any challenge you toss its
way here in Northern California waters.
At the top of the heap is the Revo
MGX. It’s sleek, sexy and is billed as
the next generation of Revo with one
configuration featuring a sizzling 7.9 to
1 gear ratio. I’ve yet to try the MGX and
in reality I find it hard to believe that
the STX, which I consider the perfect
baitcaster, could be improved upon, but if
anyone could it would be the engineers at
Abu Garcia.
If you are in the market for a new
baitcaster buy a Revo, heck you might
even want to pick up the top of the line
Revo MGX. .One thing is certain, which
ever Revo you choose there won’t be any
complaints!
For more information about the
Revo line or any of Abu Garcia’s fine
products, check them out on the web at

The 2nd Annual Ice Fishing
Tournament At Lake Davis
The 2nd Annual Ice Fishing
Tournament at Lake Davis, located in
Plumas National Forest in Portola, CA,
will be held on February2012. The minimal entry fee of $20
will enable you to participate in the
tournament and enjoy, what is sure to
be, a great of day fishing. All proceeds
collected will help support a great cause
as they will be donated to the American
Cancer Society.
John Pato Sr. has lived in the Portola
area for the past twenty years. Knowing
there had never been an ice fishing
tournament in that area, John had the first
tournament at Lake Davis in 2011.
Over the past 5 years, with the help
of his good friends, Dave Padilla and
Steve Harberts, John has helped bring ice
fishing back to Portola. When I spoke
to John, he mentioned that it had felt
like everyone had forgotten about ice
fishing in Lake Davis because not many
had done it in quite a while. Of course
the poisoning of Lake Davis did not help
bring the fishermen there either.
These days, there are approximately
twenty to thirty people out on the water daily
in search of big rainbows. The DFG stocked
the Eagle Lake strain of trout in the lake.
While fishing Lake Davis, most people
use a fish finder and as short of a rod as
possible since that brings you closer to the
hole and ultimately, the fish! John uses
a mini ugly stick approximately 2 1/2 to
3 feet long. He uses a Shimano Stradic
spinning reel with 4 to 6 pound test line
with Power Bait, night crawlers, and
Berkeley Gulp pink eggs. You’ll also need
an auger to drill a hole in the ice.
Last year, 79 anglers participated in
this tournament and approximately
$1,900.00 was donated to American
Cancer Society.
As with many tournaments, there
will be a raffle where you’ll have an
opportunity to win a variety of items
from Fishing rods, reels, golf trips,
restaurant coupons, Napa - $100 tool set.
Many major fishing and several other
retailers will also be donating to the raffle
this year.
Keep in mind that the proceeds will go
to the American Cancer Society. Having
lost a loved one to cancer, both John and
his wife, Kellie, decided to donate the
proceeds to the cancer society.
For more information call John at 530832-9659 or visit his website at http://
