PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
TERM 3
Hi Everyone
WEEK 3
It was wonderful to see lots of parents here last Tuesday for parentteacher interviews. I’m certainly glad the cold snap arrived after we held
them. We managed to get through 470+ interviews on the night, so
thanks again for attending. If you missed out on an interview for
whatever reason, feel free to contact your child’s teacher for a phone
interview, email conversation or to make an appointment to meet.

WEEK 5
Fri, 25 August

Cultural dress-up day and
parade (part of our
Olympics unit)
The parents of Room 12 students got quite a surprise when they turned
up for the interviews last Tuesday,
because the classroom was full of
Kiwi Olympians! The students had
had a lot of fun stuffing clothing to
make mannequins of their favourite
sportsperson. Each student had also
‘helped’ their mannequin write a
report about themselves; these
reports were open on the desks for
parents to read. What fun!
Warm regards
Jess Ward – Principal/Tumuaki
WORD OF THE
WEEK
RECENT NEW STUDENTS

Antonia—all in Rm 29.

ENROLMENT SCHEME REVIEW
As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, our Board has been consulting with the Ministry of Education about the
size of our school. At Paraparaumu Beach School our desired roll size would ideally be a student population of
620. This roll size would work well with the number of buildings and the amount of playground space we have.
Last year we reached 730 and we are likely to do so again this year! Due to these very high student numbers, we
are looking to decrease the size of our current school zone and have submitted a proposal to the Ministry. This
will not affect any student currently attending PBS; they will still retain their place here.
For many years our Trustees have shown a commitment to keeping families together, by balloting in siblings
(turning 5 years old), who for whatever reason find themselves ‘out of zone’. We wish to retain this commitment
going forward.
Before a new zone is accepted by the Ministry, we still have some consultation to go through with our community
and other schools in the district. We hope to hold a meeting before the end of August, so we will keep you
informed once we have a set date.
KIDS’ WORK
Have you seen the wonderful Fish Artworks in our Office area? These stunning pastel and transfer artworks were
created by Room 18.
Here are just a few of amazing examples by Brooke, Connor, Jake and Jodeci.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB ORDERS
Orders are due back by 9am on Friday, 19 August.
You can now place your order and pay online yourself using the Scholastic LOOP
website for parents mybookclub.scholastic.co.nz. Please make sure you choose
Paraparaumu Beach School (don’t enter the postal code) and your child's teacher’s
name and room when you place your order. If you order online DO NOT return any
paperwork to school, thanks. Alternatively you can still order by filling out the order
form and returning it to the money box outside the staffroom along with your payment. Please do not ask the office for change for the order, as this is not possible.
If you have any questions you can email Paula, our Book Club Co-ordinator at
[email protected]

ART SPLASH
Singing and Wearable Arts
Only a few weeks until school Arts Groups participate in Art Splash. Students are working hard to
complete costumes, and to learn some quite challenging songs.
The Singing and Wearable Arts Groups will be performing from 5.15pm on Tuesday, 30 August. If
you ordered tickets last term, these will be distributed in the coming week, as they finally arrived on
Friday. If we run out of tickets to distribute at school, they are also available on the day (cash
payments only), at the Michael Fowler Centre.
An update letter will come out to parents in the next two weeks to confirm arrangements (including
helper information).
Thanks
Carrie Reid and Kaye Gilman
Dance
The Dance Group will be performing from 5pm on Friday, 2 September. Tickets will be available for
purchase as soon as they are sent to us from Artsplash. If we run out of tickets to distribute at
school, they are also available on the day (cash payments only), at the Michael Fowler Centre. We
will send you an update letter in the following two weeks with more information, (including parent
help, transport, costumes, etc.)
Thanks
Brenda Staples, Kathryn Siversen, Liz Griffin, and Jeanine Wilson

STUDENT COUNCIL
Mini Olympics
The Student Council have been busy planning for a school mini Olympics. The main purpose is
to have fun, participate, get active and also for the whole school to do something together. It is
called a mini Olympics but actually with nearly 700 children, it isn’t that mini!
It will be held on Wednesday, 17 August from 11am with the postponement date
being Friday, 19 August.
The children will be put into colour groups relating to the Olympic rings. The
groups will have children from all parts of the school, so 5 year olds right up to
13 year olds. They will move around five different activities with their teachers
and student helpers.
It would be awesome if the children could come along wearing their assigned colour – adding to
the fun.
We will be putting them into groups shortly, so watch out for more information shortly.
Rubbish
As a part of our project designed to reduce rubbish at PBS, the Student Council arranged a
competition which started in Te Motu last week. Congratulations to all of Te Motu
syndicate for reducing their rubbish. All the classes did really well and brought
much less rubbish than the first time we counted. In 3rd place was Room 8. Room
13 not only came 2nd with only 10 pieces of rubbish, but reduced their amount by
66 - amazing job!
In 1st place was Rm 15 with only one piece of rubbish in total. That is
absolutely brilliant and just shows what you can achieve if you put your mind to it.
Keep it up, everyone.
This week it is Ngaru syndicate who will be in the competition. We have talked with all the
classes. So remember to keep that lunchbox rubbish free. Not only because the student council
