I encourage you to keep your project fun, and
manageable. Budget your time and your money. In
doing so, your completed project will exceed your
expectations.
If this is your first Hot Rod you might consider keeping
it simple and getting on the road as soon as possible.
In fact this is good advice for most projects. After
all, working on Hot Rods in the garage is fun, but it’s
always more fun when you get out on the road.

Visualize the Hot Rod/Street Rod/Custom Car that’s right for you. Do you like Roadsters, Coupes, Sedans or
Trucks? Are one of these body styles more suitable for you and your family? Does one style tend to be more
“you” than the others?

What suits your fancy? Fully detailed cars with paint, interior and chrome or basic traditionally styled Hot Rods or

Look around. Read and purchase books and magazines on Hot Rod topics that interest you. Study cars in

magazines and notice the details that you both like and dislike. Attend car shows and try to get to some national
events. You’ll make much better progress and with fewer mistakes once you can visualize where you are going.

Set realistic goals. Get involved in a project you can finish and stay in a project you can afford.
Involve friends and family. Team up with great suppliers (like Honest Charley) that can assist you in your project
and who will work with you and help you along the way.
Safety First and Always
If you’re going to enjoy your hot rod, it must react
predictability and safely.
Safety
You don’t want to get hurt. Some components are better
purchased than made at home. Most new parts are much safer
than the “neat” old stuff that’s fun to look at. We’re not driving
in the same traffic that was common 65 years ago. Some stuff
didn’t work well then and performs even less today.
Battery
Your battery is necessary but can be dangerous. Don’t risk
your eyes or your pretty face. When disconnecting your
battery, always remove the negative cable first and connect it
last.
SteerinG
Your steering must be predictable. You can’t enjoy a hot rod
that darts left or right as the suspension moves up and down (a
condition known as bump steer). You’ll want all components to
be structurally sound and compatible.
StoppinG
You want to know that you’ll stop predictably, safely, quickly
and in a straight line (when necessary). The car or motorcycle
in front of you can stop “Right Now”! You’ve got to also.
Drive train
Since you expect to put on lots of miles, the engine,
transmission and rear end must be located correctly. A proper
drive line angle is essential. All components must stay properly
located for miles and miles and for years and years.
CHaSSiS
A strong and properly constructed chassis is essential. You
can build it yourself or you can buy it. Regardless of your
choice, it must be right! You want the suspension, drive train,
body, hood, trunk and everything else to adjust properly
and stay in place. You want the paint (if you paint it) to stay
in place and not crack or chip. To accomplish all this, the
chassis must maintain shape and position. To achieve a good
final result you’ve got to start with a good foundation. Buy
your chassis or build it. A good beginning is essential for a
satisfactory conclusion.
WHeelS & tireS
Your tire and wheel combination is crucial for your look and
your safety. It also allows you to establish stance, attitude,
relationships and clearances. Purchasing tires and wheels
early will allow you to roll your chassis around the shop
and into the sunlight. You want your tires and wheels to look
right and perform right. That’s why we always recommend

Some automotive projects are more doable
and more likely to get finished than others.

Some cars are less expensive
to build than others.
3.
Some Hot Rods will be more fun and practical for you and your family
to own than others.

For a satisfactory conclusion you’ll benefit from a satisfactory
beginning. Ideally, you should have some idea of how you want your
ride to look when finished, and a basic idea of how you expect to
arrive there.

Take time to consider individual components in the context of how
they relate and interact with other components they connect too.
Most chassis, steering and suspension components are
dependent on each other.
6.
There’s always a good, better, and best way to do things. There is
also an affordable way to complete your project, just as there is an
impossibly expensive way that’ll keep you bogged down.
7.
Pace and price your project to keep it
fun and relaxed.
8.
Always build it safe.
9.
Order and locate hard to get parts and parts that require long lead
times early so that they won’t hold you up later!
10.
Purchase the best parts you can find. The right part the first time
will save you time and money. And best of all, quality components
contribute to a successful conclusion.

Set your sights on “Gettin’ finished and gettin’ on the road”.
No car has ever been finished that the builder didn’t want finished.
Sometimes progress may go slow, but you can always make progress.

• When welding, if you smell something burning, it’s probably you
• Frayed shirts, blue jeans and oily clothes smolder and are ideal
combustible materials
• Don’t final weld nothin’ until everything’s in position - and Honest
suggests everything!
• Best to tack weld components until all relationships are
established
• A good way to begin construction is by bolting the frame rails
together with the front and rear spreader bars • This establishes
the correct front and rear dimensions and holds the rails in
position • When installing the front crossmember, tilt rear of
front crossmember " lower than the front • Caster will be set
just about right

the gap between the frame rails,
radiator shell and hoodsides.
At the firewall, pinched and

same width. Some builders
contend pinched rails look more
refined & provide for better hood
alignment. Other builders prefer
the “traditional” unpinched look
and increased engine/steering
box clearance they gain by not

Pete & Jakes offers 3 “offsets” on rear adjusters: (1) 0°
straight, (2) 5°, (3) 9° • In reality any of the 3 can be used
when building a chassis since your rear mounting point angle
hasn’t been established
Pete & Jakes offers these suggestions:
• Narrow 46" axles - use 5° adjusters
• Wide 47 ¾" axles - use 9° adjusters
• If you have a Pete & Jakes chassis, it’s set up using 9°
adjusters regardless of axle width
