Editor anyone?
We are still on the lookout for an enthusiastic
volunteer or volunteers to edit the newsletter. It
is a good opportunity to learn new skills and become involved in your local community. The
WCA committee will do everything possible to
make this an enjoyable experience, not just a
chore!
The WCA particularly thanks the Australian Catholic University (ACU),
Signadou Campus in Watson, for printing this Newsletter as a community service.

Hearing of this grand opportunity a group of us Watsonites have got together to put
on a fabulous party at the Watson Shops to celebrate all that is weird, wacky and
wonderful about Watson!
Come down to hear musicians who live down our streets, see the children from our
local schools perform and dance with your neighbours!
Also planned is a community feast where you are encouraged to bring home-grown
produce cooked up into scrumptious and tantalizing meals to enjoy and share. Here’s
your chance to show off green fingers matched with culinary skills.

Summernats Survey 2013
Sale of Block 2 Section 111
We give our sincerest appreciation to the many residents who took the time
to respond to the questions in the survey. There was a wide spectrum of respondents and views. Several of them included detailed comments which
would have taken some time to write. The data is presently being collated
into a large spreadsheet. After doing some statistical and qualitative analysis
we will write a report which will include a set of key recommendations to take
to the Summernats organising committee and the ACT Government. The
Summernats organising committee is interested to hear what residents have
to report.
Corner of Aspinall Street and Negus Crescent
Watson
The Economic Development Directorate wrote a letter to the Association requesting consultation on the sale of this block of land which is listed in the
Land Release Program for 2013-14. We were asked to present our views on
potential land uses to which it could be put. The zoning for this is currently
Residential 1 (RZ1). The WCA made the following recommendations:

WCA would like this block of land rezoned from RZ1 suburban to CFZ1
to facilitate the long term provision of community facilities in north Watson.

WCA would prefer that a child care centre, community activity centre, education establishment, or residential care accommodation be erected on
the site.
Please stay tuned for the next edition of the Watzon for the results.
Watson Medical Centre
Renovation—Refurbishment
Watson Woodlands Special Open Day
The practice is still operating at the Downer Business Park. Entry is opposite house #30 Frencham Street in Downer. Please contact 62487005 to
make enquiries or book an appointment.
Sunday April 21 2013
9:00—12:00
WCA and its Woodlands Working Group will be holding a woodlands open
day as part of its Watson 50th anniversary and to celebrate our very special
bushland in Watson.
The practice is looking forward to be back in its Watson premises. They are
hoping to finalise the extension and refurbishment towards the end of February if possible.
We have booked Reptiles Inc to keep children and children-at-heart suitably
entertained. Our resident botanist and local expert on the woodland, John
Briggs, has kindly offered to take groups on a walk through the woodland
pointing out the various species of eucalypts and understorey plants and
talking about the work we have been doing with our restoration efforts. And if
we are lucky, a couple of local didgeridoo players will be on hand to set the
atmosphere!
Watson Shops
Renovation
Shops including Satis, My Friend, Coco’s and Beautiful You will be undergoing renovation shortly as per the development application which was notified
at the shops recently. This should involve extensions to the back, front and
northern sides, along with new roofing which will increase the gross floor
area of these shops by around 30%.
Please check with these businesses for any closing times during this renovation period.
4
Reptiles Inc will be bringing out an enclosure containing bearded dragons,
blue tongue lizards, shingle back lizards, long-necked turtles and a python to
admire. All of the lizards are found in the woodland and some breed there.
If you are driving, please park on the road verge near the main gate into Justice Robert Hope Park. The gate is between the Ted Noffs facility and the
Channel 7 studio west ot Antill Street. We will be setting up close by, probably under one of the large eucalypts to provide shelter. Please wear long
clothing and study footwear. Bring hat and sunscreen if needed. We will be
providing light refreshments throughout the morning.
