Summer is winding down, at least according to the calendar, but
we still have some wonderful weather ahead of us. As we head into September, we will probably see fewer days with 80-90 degree temperatures and more of the 60’s and 70’s.
Often this is the best time of year for
golf. Some of our leagues have already
finished for the season, while some
still have a couple of weeks to go.
There are lots of tee times available
for open play.
Our fall golf special rates begin
on Tuesday, September 8th. Nine
holes for all non-senior players will be
$11.75 walking or $18.75 riding. Seniors (60 years and up) will be $9.00
walking or $16.00 riding. If you play a second, third, or even fourth
round, it is just $2.00 walking or $6.00 riding. So take advantage of the
beautiful weather and make a day of it!

Speaking of weather, on Monday, August 10th we experienced
more than 3.5” of rain. It mostly happened within two hours around
midday. Amazingly, our league did play that evening, and we even allowed riding carts. Our dedicated and tireless superintendent was mostly responsible for pumping all of the water away and making the golf
course playable in a very short time. I don’t believe that any other courses in the area were open that evening, so it was a truly heroic endeavor.
If you see J.C., please congratulate him.
On a similar note, we have been almost entirely free of mosquitoes for many weeks now. J.C. gets most of the credit for that as well,
treating the golf course multiple times and making everyone’s golf experience much more enjoyable.
Spartan fans: remember, football season is upon us. We’ve got
MSU golf gear so you can show your support. If you do not happen to be
an MSU supporter, we have golf accessories from many other colleges
and universities, as well as NFL, MLB, and NHL. Show your colors!

Golf is infinitely variable. Every round is different, every shot is
different. For many of us, even our bodies and physical capacities differ from one day to the next. It is no wonder that no golfer has ever
perfected their game. With all of the variables inherent in the golf
swing and the playing conditions (wind, temperature, moisture), it is
imperative that the golfer trusts his or her equipment.
With all of the variables inherent in the
golf swing and the
playing conditions,
it is imperative that
the golfer trusts his
or her equipment.
Every golfer’s clubs must be synchronized with their swing. If
the golf clubs do not have the correct specifications for the individual,
it makes a difficult game even more difficult. Very few people are completely average in every way. Everyone has unique physical dimensions
and athletic capacities, and everyone has their own swing. When a
golfer’s clubs are custom fit, it allows the golfer to optimize their own
swing, maximizing consistency, power, and results.
Professional golfers have far more skill than normal people, not
to mention constant coaching and lots of practice. Still, no professional
golfer would settle for golf clubs off the rack. If anyone could adapt
their swing to clubs that were not fit to their swing, it would be these
highly skilled players, but they recognize that this would be a costly
compromise. All professional players have golf clubs custom fit specifically to their swing and their game. Average golfers, however, often try
to make it work with clubs that do not fit properly. Usually they are
mystified by their lack of improvement. There are many, many different golf clubs out there, and they have a wide range of playing characteristics. Think about this: if you hit the ball too low, would you want
clubs that are meant to create low ball flight? What if you often hook
the ball uncontrollably, would you want clubs that promote a hook?
Again, golf is difficult enough without the added complication of
fighting against your golf clubs.
What do the pros have to say about this? Jordan Speith, who
won both the Masters and the U.S. Open this season, as well as near
misses in the Open Championship and the PGA, highly recommends
that every golfer should have custom fitted clubs. Check out his
thoughts on this website, and then call us for a custom club fitting appointment.

J.C.’s COURSE NOTES
-More than pretty facesIf you are a regular visitor to the pro shop, you are probably used to seeing familiar faces across
the counter. We have been lucky to find and retain very good people. It’s not easy to get golfers off the
tee while answering the phone and “running the store”! Of course, at Indian Hills we require they do all
that in addition to club repair work. All of our Pro Shop staff are trained experts in re-gripping and other club work. These three gentlemen each re-grip thousands of clubs a year.
Scott is in his third era at Indian Hills. He began here as a young lad in the mid-eighties. After a
few years he realized that based on what we were paying him, he could go to school or eat, but not both.
He left for a higher paying (but I’m sure less satisfying) job to finance his education. In the early nineties
he returned here to work summers while teaching school in Owosso. He managed to escape us for a few
years but wandered back in 2013. It’s hard to fight the pull of “ the thrills”. Scott’s multi-tasking skills
are impressive. He’ll be on the phone, making change, and installing a jumbo putter grip all at the same
time. I guess a classroom of 25 eight year olds prepares you well for a little stress.
I met Kenny years ago in the bowling alley. He continues to be one of the area’s best bowlers,
named to numerous all-city teams and the Lansing bowling hall-of-fame. He likes to point out that I am
four days older than him, which doesn’t bother me as much as looking 10 years older. In 2008 we outbid GM for Kenny’s services and the Pro Shop has been a far more pleasant place since. His work ethic
and good humor are off the charts; this from a guy who wasn’t interested in golf, claims to hate cats, and
put “know my ABD’s” on the special skills portion of his job application.
Ken (not Kenny) is our latest and youngest addition. He is a student, a lab tech, a waiter, and
more than anything, a golf lover. When Ken moved into town he played here quite a bit. When he was
here he said all the things you want to hear from a future employee: “I love Indian Hills”, and “I would
work here for nothing”. Ken is the best golfer on the staff, a little like being the tallest of the seven
dwarfs. This is his second year in the Pro Shop.
-One is the loneliest numberIt’s the last week of August and not one hole in one reported. Come on, immortality awaits. I
think you all should consider an appointment with Sam to fine tune or replace those faulty irons. For
those of you who already have: practice!
-Wheels wound when weather is wickedI am asked occasionally if today is a “rough only” or “90 degree” cart day. It is best for the course
to generally drive in the rough as much as possible. This is especially true on hot, wilt prone days. When
the course is extremely wet, we prefer you drive on the highest ground available , regardless of whether
fairway or rough. Thanks!
