Blink-182
at Voodoo Music Experience 2011

A
massive crowd of music lovers converged on City Park in New
Orleans last weekend. The costumed cast of thousands dispersed
to diverse stages in the days before Halloween to see acts ranging
from rap collective Odd Future to traditional New Orleans jazz artists to
1990s grunge staple Soundgarden. But the Voodoo Experience’s biggest
draw was the recently reunited punk rock trio Blink-182.
Saturday marked the first time in over a decade Blink-182 has
performed in the Crescent City. The last date was before their breakout
album Enema of the State, making this Louisiana stop long overdue for
the city’s oldest Blink fans. Looking back to only 2005, many gave up on
ever seeing the band live when members Travis Barker and Mark Hoppus
parted ways with Tom DeLonge, splitting the group. The internal tensions
led to the ominous announcement of an “indefinite hiatus” in 2005,
but tragedy in 2008 brought the Mark, Tom and Travis back together.
After the sudden death of one of the band’s frequent producers in August,
DeLonge began speaking to his old friends and bandmates again. Soon
after, Barker was involved in a plane crash that left him seriously injured
with second and third degree burns. Both Hoppus and DeLonge visited
Barker in the hospital during his recovery, helping them work through their
problems. The incident helped the trio reconcile and they announced their
reunion in early 2009 during the 51st Grammy Awards. And on September
27, the reunited Blink-182 released their new album Neighborhoods.
If any question remained regarding the authenticity of the band’s reunion
and renewed friendship, the banter between vocalists DeLonge and Hoppus
wiped away that notion during their performance on Saturday. The crowd
was treated to the over-the-top vulgarity that helped make a name for the
group through the two’s mockery between songs. Their recent albums have
a more mature sound, but the stage show is good old-fashioned Blink-182.
The majority of the songs performed at Voodoo on Saturday night were
from their latest album, but fans were also treated to classics like “Rock
Show,” “All the Small Things” and “Josie.” They also added a little taste
of New Orleans to their performance with a jazz drum solo by Barker,
and a couple of inappropriate jokes about Cajun spices and Voodoo
dolls that shouldn’t be repeated outside of the Voodoo Experience.
Blink-182’s uniquely vulgar and energetic pop punk shows started in the
early 90s, when San Diego natives Hoppus and DeLonge formed the band
with its original drummer, Scott Raynor. Barker took over on drums after
the success of the album Dude Ranch, just in time for the band to enjoy huge
mainstream success with their next album, Enema of the State. The album’s
debut single “What’s My Age Again” would become their breakout hit after
the song’s classic video showed the trio jogging around town in the buff.
During two decades of making music, Blink-182 has been able to
collect a wide variety of fans, a fact readily evident in the crowd that
gathered before the main stage. From older fans on board with Blink since
the beginning, to kids that only recently got involved with Blink-182 after
their reunion, their music is accessible to mainstream music listeners
while pleasing devout pop punk worshippers. It was this assortment of
fans, coupled with the group’s energetic performance that made them
one of this year’s highlights at the Voodoo Music Experience 2011. S
