Hollenbeck: A Showcase for Music, the Arts and Learning
IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE JUST ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE LIFE AT
HOLLENBECK PALMS, IT WOULD HAVE TO BE "VIBRANT"
nown for its unusually rich calendar of cultural events, Hollenbeck Palms actively seeks
out and hosts performances by first-class musicians; lectures by noted scholars; and many
more celebrations of music, fine and performing arts, and ongoing learning.
Each year, an impressive roster of talents and
experts appear at Hollenbeck to perform, speak
and enlighten. They include:
USC Student Classical Guitar Recitals:
Presented Sunday mornings in the A Parlor as a
delightful prelude to lunch.
The LA Opera Series: Cherished by aficionados
and novices alike, events feature a guest lecturer
followed by a film version of the opera … and
Hollenbeck’s award-winning Activities team,
sometimes a trip to see it live.

Cal State Lifelong Learning: A wonderful tradition
partners, offers an unparalled variety of outof continuing education, with lectures ranging from
standing events and programs, such as this
recent concert by The Taiko Center of LA.
history and science to personal well-being.
Another major source of cultural enrichment is Hollenbeck's own engaged and creative
residents, many of whom perform, present, and facilitate events for the entire community.
Examples are:
The Film Group: Started by residents Betty Fogt and Helen Jones, this popular group gathers
monthly to watch a current feature film, then have a lively discussion about it.
Comedy at Hollenbeck: A monthly comedy workshop and a six-week stand-up comedy class,
taught by professionals and starring our residents, prove that many can inspire belly laughs.
To complete the stimulating year-round lineup, Hollenbeck is the point of departure to many of
LA’s top cultural destinations. Recent calendar outings have included Walt Disney Concert Hall,
Mark Taper Forum, Colburn School, Ahmanson Theatre, Caltech, Occidental College, Pasadena
Civic Auditorium, Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts, Getty Museum, John Anson Ford
Amphitheatre, and the new Resnick Pavilion at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
We invite you to explore the vibrant world of Hollenbeck Palms before you finalize your
retirement plans. Please RSVP to one of our upcoming special events, and see for yourself
what makes us shine!

SPRING 2011
We Welcome New Residents
JEANNE KENNEDY
From
her
early years in Rhode Island, Jeanne
became a New Yorker, moving to
Brooklyn at age eight and was soon
enjoying the subway system’s quick
jaunts into Manhattan. Shopping and
theater became her favorite activities
as she zipped around the Big Apple
for a nickel-a-ride.
Following the death of her husband, Joseph, Jeanne
moved to California in 1971 to be near her parents in the
San Fernando Valley. She earned an Associates of Arts
degree and worked for The Rand Corporation, continuing
after it segmented into the Systems Development Corporation. Living in Westlake Village, Jeanne was an avid
golfer and rider, owning her own equine and enjoying
weekends on horseback.
She later became employed as chief clerk in the East
Los Angeles office of L.A. County’s Department of Social
Services and eventually retired. Her friend, Camille
Williamson, introduced her to Hollenbeck Palms. Jeanne’s
wide-open areas of interest are stimulated by her new
environment. “There’s always someplace to go, something
to do,” she says enthusiastically. “They have a wonderful
gym here. I’m still getting used to everything and getting
settled. It changes from day to day!”
are two of
EPalms’
VA & RICHARD ROSALES Hollenbeck
newest arrivals but have quickly acclimated with
the support of Hollenbeck Palms’ staff, and their devoted
family including 10 grandchildren. The Rosales’ stay in
touch by Skype, e-mail and telephone. “It’s a wonderful
world we live in,” says Richard. “I can be a friend to
everyone here.” Within a
month of arriving, their
son Mario, a singer,
performed for the
Hollenbeck Palms’
members. He plans to
return Wednesday, July
20th to perform his
“Fly Me To The Moon”
show, with more hits from the 1930s, 40s, and 50s.
Moving to Hollenbeck Palms has also been like going
home again for both Richard and Eva, where they have
met many new friends. When Eva and Richard met, she
was a machine operator in Lincoln Heights, and continued
in the job after their marriage to financially assist her
mother in Mexico.
Originally from the Lincoln Heights area, at age three
Richard, his two sisters and parents moved to Chihuahua,
Mexico. At age 10, he lost both of his parents and moved in
with his grandmother who lived nearby. As a teen, he
returned to the U.S., attending school to learn English all
over again and earning a GED in 1949. He went to work at a
metal polishing company while continuing in night school.
He later went to work for Prudential Life Insurance where
he retired 18 years ago. His professional interests continued after retirement when he served with a law firm,
interviewing people involved in court cases.
The Rosales’ moved to Hollenback Palms primarily
because of Richard’s health. They considered several other
retirement communities and decided “this was the best.” “As
far as I’m concerned, says Richard, “they’re my new family.”
VIOLA NAKAGAWA
With a lifelong appreciation of
esthetics, Viola enjoys the view of
towering evergreens and colorful
flowers from her apartment at
Hollenbeck Palms. A California
native from the Sacramento area,
Viola was relocated to the Amache
Internment Camp near Granada,
CO., “in the midst of sagebrushes
and dust.” The daughter of Japanese immigrants, she
attended the Art Institute of Chicago after WWII.
Viola returned to California, and after a stint in San
Francisco that included business college and working for
an import/export firm, she landed in Los Angeles allocating
automobiles to dealerships for the French car maker
Renault. From East Los Angeles, Viola and her beloved
husband Fred moved to Montebello Hills where for 40
years they lived surrounded by their beautiful rose bushes
and garden. Fred died a few years ago.
After an exciting career with renowned architecture
and engineering consulting firm HNTB (their work includes
important bridges, airports and sports stadiums) Viola
retired. Following an accident, she was a therapy patient in
Hensel Hall and now resides in the A Building. Says Viola,
“The residents are all very delightful, with pleasant smiles
which makes me feel very welcomed.” She particularly
appreciates exercise class under personal instructor
Ann Haschka, and the fun and friendly Bingo Game
with Loretta.

WELLNESS
ALLON SCHOENER
BARBARA JURY
Dr. Lee’s work is not about dieting, but changing the
composition of our diet to complement our condition.
She takes measurements of body composition, metabolism
and muscle tone, which then allows her to customize a
long-term plan to treat existing conditions, enhance
overall health and avert future problems.
In this equation, muscle tone is as critical as nutrition.
“As we age, we must adjust not only the food we eat, but
incorporate resistance training.”
For Dr. Lee, nutrition is more than a credential.
“It’s my passion,” she says. “My work at Hollenbeck
will be the foundation of my practice.”
Having worked in a number of senior residential
settings, Dr. Lee is impressed by Hollenbeck. “It’s nicer,
more helpful, more family-oriented,” she says.
“Everyone on staff knows every resident — you simply
don’t see that in many facilities. It enhances the
quality of care.”
