Since 1994, the event has proven itself amongst the highest levels of world golf. Rechristened The Evian Championship, it made its entry last year into the very closed circuit of 5 Major tournaments on the world women’s golfing tour. Franck Riboud has always held this long term vision for the tournament and knew how to position it as a reference in terms of sport, accessibility and worldwide promotion. In constant evolution, The Evian Championship is organizing in June its first qualifying event ahead of the tournament in order to provide an opportunity for two players to enter the field of the most prestigious players in the world. The only Major ever organized in continental Europe, The Evian Championship is strategically positioned at the end of the season and, for the first time in the history of world golf, will crown with the LPGA and Rolex, via the Rolex Annika Major Award, the most consistent, highest performing player across all the Major tournaments. “Our status, more than ever, demands even greater focus, ambition, expectation, responsibility, and commitment to continue to innovate and invent, to write the future with enthusiasm, particularly as we are about to celebrate our 20th year!” Franck Riboud – President of The Evian Championship Chairman and CEO of Danone. The Evian Championship will welcome the top 120 female golfers in the world from 11 to 14 September this year. For this second edition as a Major, the 120 best players in the world will be present, all determined to take over the title from Suzann Pettersen, World No. 4 and 2013 winner. One thing to note at the start of the season is that the world hierarchy is quite open given the determination and performance of the youngest players which monopolize the podiums. With the young champions who have in common the fact that they’ve been selected or invited to play at Evian, the tournament truly fulfilling its promise as being a promoter of talent and window to world golf! Lexi Thompson, who played her first “Evian” at the age of 15, in 2010, where she came in 2nd, has just won (at 19 years of age) the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the first Major of the season. Michelle Wie (24), invited at the age of 14 and one of the most popular players with the media ever since, took out the PLGA Lotte Championship in Hawaii in April. Already in the limelight, Cheyenne Woods (23), niece of the grand Tiger, took out the Volvik RACV Ladies Masters at the end of January. Already considered a prodigy of female golf, Lydia Ko (17), who chose to become Pro in October 2013 after a very sweet 2nd place at the inaugural edition of The Evian Championship, has just celebrated her first professional victory at the San Francisco Swinging Skirts competition. One should also mention British Charley Hull (18), winner of the Lalla Meryem Cup and currently No. 1 player in Europe. The sure bets will also be there keeping their hand in, like the Korean Inbee Park, still World No.1 and Evian Champion in 2012, winner of the World Ladies Championship in China, in March, the American Paula Creamer, winner of the HSBC Women’s Championship in Singapore in March, the Australian Karrie Webb and her two victories, at the Women’s Australia Open in February then at the JTBC Founders Cup in Arizona in March, or even Stacy Lewis, winner of the North Texas LPGA. The course is today a true Major course, difficult, with a very clear and spectacular view of all the holes. Focused on the welcoming of the large crowds, the hospitality areas and the desire to maintain the simplicity and not to have imposing buildings during the tournament, the work has in particular modified the model around the 18th in order to position the Evian Championship chairs on a purposefully adapted hill and to optimize the visibility of the game. 17 4 331 303 18 4 442 404 OUT 36 3362 3074 TOTAL 71 6428 5879 Just finished in time to welcome The Evian Championship 2013, it has really benefitted from ideal conditions this winter with relatively mild temperatures which have enabled it to settle into its environment. “ We led this project under difficult conditions. It’s now time for Naturel to do its job, and we will work on the course each and every year, injecting energy and ressources to maintain the standards of a Major course.“ Yannick Le Hec, Superintendent of the tournament. A putting green and a chipping green are situated close to the start of the 1st hole, so that the public can observe the players up close. Among the sixty or so major cultural and sporting events that the Department of Haute-Savoie supports each year, The Evian Championship has historically held a special place. This competition inspires excellence, its organizers pay attention to perfection, it receives global recognition and is popular with increasingly large numbers and different sectors of the public… all of these factors not only contribute to providing an event in Haute-Savoie but also contribute to its promotion. It is with this in mind that the Departmental Council will take advantage of its presence in the Partners’ Village to promote all that the region has to offer and increase its tourist attractiveness, summer and winter alike. It is also an opportunity for the Departmental Council to promote golf among young people and inspire future champions. Once again this year, the Departmental Council will therefore give the most talented young female golfers in Haute-Savoie the chance to play in the ProAm alongside the top women players on the planet. 15 SPONSORS’ CLUB SFR, a long term sponsor of the Evian Masters will jointly partner with Vodafone, the world’s leading telecommunications brand for the second edition of the 2014 Evian Championship.
