Tibitha Bids a Fond Farewell to the Hencys
In January, 2005, Pastor
Steve Hency and his
wife/ministry mate,
Brenda, accepted the call
to come to Tibitha Church
of God in Reedville,
Virginia. This couple,
from the mid-west, were
coming to a foreign place,
a country church in
Virginia. Reedville, a
town of approximately
500, is located in
Northumberland County in
the Northern Neck region
of Virginia. It is home to
the fishing industry for
Atlantic menhaden and is
known for charter fishing,
fresh seafood, farming,
and country living!
The congregation at
Tibitha had been praying
and searching for a pastor
for about a year when
Pastor Hency answered
the call. From the first
sermon to his last on May
29, those listening to his
sermons were challenged
to examine their walk with
the Lord. An altar call was
always made for people to
come to the Lord, to come
and pray about personal
needs or needs of others,
or to renew one’s walk
with the Lord. Many times
over the years, Saints
came to the altar to be

anointed with oil and with
the hands of fellow saints
laid on them, a prayer of
agreement for healing was
offered to the Lord.
The attendance at Tibitha
has stayed stable through
the years despite the loss
of over 20 members who
now reside in heaven.
The Lord has been good
and sent in more than 25
new members to work
alongside the pastor and
the take an active part in
the work of the church.
The Saints have grown
spiritually through
numerous in-depth Bible
studies. Each year Pastor
Hency would create a
series of sermons based a
book of the Bible. On
Sunday nights and
Wednesday nights, we
have studied many series
of teachings including a
three year-long series
based on Eggermeir’s
Bible Story book where
we again studied in-depth
the characters and stories
of the Bible. Pastor
Hency always created his
own study outlines and
handouts for those taking
part in the studies. His
love for and knowledge of
the scriptures was
evidenced in his
preaching and teaching.
Along with building the
Kingdom of God at
Tibitha, Pastor Hency
provided leadership in
seeing several building
projects completed during
his tenure. Those
included a new and
spacious fellowship hall,
remodeling of all the
classrooms, the narthex,
and the church sanctuary.

I’ve Been Thinkin…
I am always excited in the
summertime! Summer is
when Camp Meetings and
youth camps take place.
Youth Camp at Nazarene
Acres and Camp Warren
in Illinois were integral to
my spiritual development.
It was at Youth Camp
where I first felt the call to
Pastoral Ministry.

It was at youth camp
where I learned there was
much cooler music than
the hymns I was
accustomed to on
Sundays. Every
generation has its music,
as did mine, and it is
healthy to be exposed to
different genres
throughout life. It was at
youth camp where I
learned that as we grow
and God provides talent to
others, we should
recognize God’s blessings
on His songwriters and
musicians and avail
ourselves of these
blessings.
It was at youth camp
where I learned that the
church was much bigger
than the four walls where
a very small band of
Christians at 2011 Minton
Street in Murphysboro, IL
each week. In my small
church setting, where the
only Pastor I knew was
my Grandfather, it would
have been very easy to
become jaded, cynical,
and even rebellious
toward those I worshiped
with because of the vast
differences between
myself and others in that
setting. But youth camp
showed me there were
Christians my age, and
living for Christ was a
great thing.

FCOG-Chilhowie Calls Rev. Rick Hayes to Serve as New Pastor
In a unanimous decision
by the church held on a
business meeting after
service on Easter Sunday,
the First Church of GodChilhowie, called Rev.
Rick Hayes of Louisville,
KY to become their new
pastor.
Born and raised in
Southwest Ohio and
nurtured in a home which
honored God as Creator
and His Son as the only
source of salvation,
Richard J. Hayes became
a Christian at a young
age. Rick received his call
to Christian ministry early
in life, and preached his
first sermon as a
teenager. At this same
time, Amanda Curtis was
in Winchester, KY being
raised in a pastor’s
home. In 1994 her family
would relocate to
Middletown, OH. In the
years to follow Rick and
Amanda would cross
paths at various times,
until 2003 when the couple
began dating. They were
married June 26, 2004 and
moved to Ft Wayne,
IN. They entered
vocational ministry in 2006
when joining the staff of
Pastor Charles Heater at
Little Paint First Church of
God in Eastern
Kentucky. While at the
Little Paint Church, Rick
and Amanda welcomed
two children: son Shane
Walker born in 2007 and
daughter Reagan born in
2009. In 2009, the Hayes
family relocated to
Louisville, KY where Rick
assumed the pastorate at
Poplar Level Church of
God. While in Louisville,
the Hayes family
continued to grow as they
welcomed two more boys:
James born in 2013 and
Harrison born in
2015. Rick and Amanda
are personally and
collectively gifted for
ministry service. They
share particular interest in
marriage and family
ministry concepts, and
believe the church is best
served on the cultural
front lines promoting
evangelism and
discipleship. They desire
to remain in God’s will of
being led by the Holy
Spirit to share the
salvation message of
Jesus Christ. Through it
all, Rick and Amanda
value life with each other,
raising their four children,
and laboring in the
ministry field. Pastor
Hayes is ordained
through the Church of
God and holds a Christian
Ministries degree through
Indiana Wesleyan
University.
Camp Bedford in Need of Caretaker
The Ministry of Church
Property has received the
news of the retirement
plans of Brother Henry
Brown. Brother Brown
has been the care taker
for Camp Bedford for a
number of years and
COGVA will certainly feel
the vacancy as he moves
to Maryland.
His retirement will leave a
vacancy that will need to
be filled. At a recent
Executive Board meeting,
it was determined that an
ad be placed in COGVA
News advertising the open
care takers position at
Camp Bedford. Those
interested in details
should contact

In today’s world, how can I
stand confidently for the
Lord? It is to be confident
in what I believe in and I
believe in my youth
leaders of the youth group
at Gordon Road Church of
God. I trust them for every
Sunday service and
Wednesday nights, and
can turn to them for help
whenever I need help. I
have faith in knowing that
God lives through me to
show confidence
wherever I go. When
having the
acknowledgement of all of
the possible chances to
have second chances in
hope and truth, especially
meeting more Christian
people as well I still have
my Christian friends to
rely on, and the assurance
of positive thoughts that
are very promising to
know that commitment
which is intended. “All
things are possible” (Luke
18:27)
“I can do all things through
Christ who strengthens
me” (Philippians 4:13) as I
can do anything through
him because he is my
Savior and the Creator of
all creations in the world.
By praying every single
day and reading the bible
and devotions, I have a
close and personal
relationship with Him. This
is life, a Christian life, no
matter what happens I can
have anything through him
but no one else. “Beloved,
if our heart does not
condemn us, we have
confidence before God”.
(1 John 3:21). As this
verse says that having
confidence before him is
like showing the real you
which is tough for me but
I’ve got this with God on
my side.
How I feel certain how
special that I am and
everyone in this world is
as well, is by having a
positive attitude towards
God by following Jesus
Christ along the way on a
silver stoned brick path
just walking next to Him
while talking about
everything, and always
knowing that God’s not
dead. “Cast all your …….
On me” (1 Peter 5:7). As
in everything positive like
how it is like being in the
youth group, that we are
always positive as in “My
grace is sufficient” (2
Corinthians 12:9). “In Him
and through faith in him
we may approach God
with freedom and
confidence” (Ephesians
3:12) anything is possible
in him as the lightning bolt
is striking down to know
that Jesus is the way from
Heaven to Earth as it is.
And that’s why I had the
choice to always have that
positive attitude and all
smiles when going to
church, to worship the
Lord. I believe that God’s
not dead, that I trust in my
youth leaders of the youth
group at my church, and
that no matter what
happens God is always
here. That’s how I feel
trustworthy to have that
capable feeling, the love
and faith from God. Every
day I will pray and read
my bible, whatever the
Lord has a scripture for
me, as if assurance is
there when I’m frightened
that He is here.

S.H.A.P.E. Training to Begin for COGVA
On April 7, team of 11 people gathered to talk with Paul Dregar about the possibility of bringing S.H.A.P.E. to the Church of
God in Virginia. This meeting produced excitement about the benefits of this program. The acronym of S.H.A.P.E. stands
for Sustaining Health and Pastoral Excellence. S.H.A.P.E. is an opportunity for pastors to grow in their relationship to Christ
by nurturing relationships with colleagues in ministry. It serves as a tool to bring about and enhance relationship among the
leadership in the family of God. This promises to be a great asset for COGVA.
S.H.A.P.E. Coach Training will begin June 10 at the Mountain View CHOG in Lynchburg. The schedule for this gathering of
S.H.A.P.E. Leaders is as follows: June 10, July 29, and August 19, each to maintain a schedule of 10:00 am to 4:30 pm. At
our first gathering, we may tweak that schedule a bit to accommodate everyone’s schedule who asks to be a part of this
leadership training.
Please watch for more information about S.H.A.P.E Clusters being formed in regions across the state. If you are interested

Men’s Ministry Team Gathers for Work and Relationship
A group of 9 men from the
COGVA Men’s Ministries
Team descended on the
grounds of Camp Christi
June 2 – 4 to accomplish
a task that has been in the
discussion and planning
stages for many months.
These men gave of their
time and labor to
accomplish the task of
grinding the floor down in
the tabernacle to make it
smoother and easier to
clean. This project, along
with the trimming and
gathering of brush and
power washing the
pavilion in the pool area
for paint prep not only
helped prepare the way
for our camps and camp
meetings, but more
importantly served to help
build relationships with
one another. COGVA
would like to express its
appreciation to Rev.
Harold Boyd, Men’s
Ministry President, Edgar
Myers, Larry Ebinger,
Robert Wooten, Rev. Pete
Conciglia, Rev. Melvin
Hooker, Mark Aufrecht,
Claude Neace, and Dr.
Bob Neace, for their hard
work on these projects.
This group would have
had difficulty fulfilling their
mission this weekend
without the capable help
of Diana Aufrecht and
Norma Neace, who kept
us well fed. The Men’s
Ministry gather quarterly
for teaching and learning
opportunities, and these
dates can be accessed via
the calendar in COGVA
News, as well as
informational flyers
throughout the year.
There is always a great
time of fellowship,
laughter, encouragement
and support in these team
gatherings and every man
in COGVA is encouraged
to be a participant in the
Men’s Ministry. “How?”,
one might ask. It I as
simple as being present.
Men, would you give
prayerful thought to joining
the Men’s Ministry of
COGVA?
I’ve Been Thinkin… (continued)
It was at youth camp that I
began to write letters to
friends using regular mail
because the Al Gore had
not given us the internet
yet. This proved to be
tedious at best, and taught
me long distance
romances never lasted
longer than the month
following youth camp, but I
digress….
As I have grown older, I
still hold a place in my
heart for youth camp.
With the exception of one
year, my adult summers
have included working in
our youth camps in Illinois
and Virginia. I have
served as a prayer warrior,
camp director, counselor,
financial benefactor, cook,
and dishwasher. I will be
serving in some of those
capacities again this year,
and as long as the Lord
allows me to serve.
It has been exposure to
this aspect of ministry that
gives me great hope for
the future of the Church of
God. Throughout the
years, it has been my
privilege to serve young
men and women who have
grown from childhood to
serving as leaders in
churches across the
movement, and in various
denominational settings as
well. Some have taken
leadership positions in
their local churches, while
others have become
pastors, evangelists,
teachers, nurses, and a
host of other occupations
that enable them to serve
Christ with the love of
Christ many experience
with great intensity at
youth camp, often for the
very first time.
I could go on and on about
the impact church youth
camp has made on me. I
could fill this, and other
issues of COGVA News
about the profound
positive affect church
youth camps across the
country have provided the
church at large. But I draw
to my conclusion to ask
this – Will you consider
allowing your youth,

REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Complete this Registration Form and mail a check payable to Virginia Youth Fellowship to the above address postmarked
by the registration deadline. Campers are allowed to send half the registration fees with their camp application, and pay
the balance at the door, provided their applications are postmarked by the registration deadline. Cancellations should be
made with the Camp Director three (3) days prior to the first date of camp and will result in a 75% refund.
Late registration: Late registrations will be accepted as space and provision permit. A completed Camper Registration
Form and late fee of $10 will be added to the registration cost ($25 will be the late fee for those showing up to camp on
the first day of camp to register). It is required that all late registrants contact the Camp Director to ensure adequate
accommodations and preparations for additional campers. Camp Registration begins at 2:00 pm on the first day of each
camp.
Arrival and Departure Times: Camp begins at 2:00 pm on the first day of each camp, and parents are asked to be at
Camp Christi at 10:00 am on the last day of camp for departure back home.

Students will not be allowed to drive through the duration of their camping stay
No fighting, weapons, fireworks, lighters, or explosives
All clothing should be modest and inoffensive.
No boys in girls’ sleeping quarters and no girls in boys’ sleeping quarters
Participation with the group is expected
Respect property, both public and personal
Respect one another, staff, and adult leaders
Respect and comply with event schedules
There will be more specific rules given at the beginning of each camp that are more specific to that particular camp
Students who fail to comply with these expectations may be sent home at their parents’ expense.

for him/her to attend events being organized by the Church. I/We understand that there are inherent risks
involved in any ministry or athletic event, and I/we hereby release the Church, its pastors, employees, agents, and
volunteer workers from any and all liability for any injury, loss, or damage to person or property that may occur
during the course of my/our child’s involvement. In the event that he/she is injured and requires the attention of a
doctor, I/we consent to any reasonable medical treatment as deemed necessary by a licensed physician. In the
event treatment is required from a physician and/or hospital personnel designated by the Church, I/we agree to
hold such person free and harmless of any claims, demands, or suits for damages arising from the giving of such
consent. I/We also acknowledge that we will be ultimately responsible for the cost of any medical care should the
cost of that medical care not be reimbursed by the health insurance provider. Further, I/we affirm that the health
insurance information provided above is accurate at this date and will, to the best of my/our knowledge, still be in
force for the student named above. I/we also agree to bring my/our child home at my/our own expense should
they become ill or if deemed necessary by the student ministries staff member.
