WINES OF HUNGARY
DÜSSELDORF 2015
GREETINGS
Dear Guest!
If you talk to anyone about Hungary, sooner or later they will surely mention
places, great performances, flavours and fragrances that make Hungarian
ingenuity, talent and quality famous all over the world. The primary purpose
of the Hungarian Tourism Ltd. is to promote the success of businesses which
with their innovation, talent and dedication work every day to make sure that
the truly Hungarian specialities reach more and more people around the world.
The Hungarian wines, thanks to Hungarian winemakers pouring their heart and
soul into their work, are world-renowned and represent a famously high standard.
We Hungarians are proud of our excellent wines, and we know that quality
products should be promoted at the appropriate forums. This is why Hungary
has been participating at the ProWein event since 2000 with undiminished
enthusiasm and with an increasing number of exhibitors every year.
I am confident that similarly to previous exhibitions, this year we will also
successfully convince visitors that Hungary is the home of quality wines, and
I also hope that many more people will get to know, and at the same time
recognize, the high standard our country represents in the area of viticulture.
Enjoy the programs of the exhibition, and have a great time discovering the
wines of Hungary!

CONTENT
Dear Reader, dear Visitor!
63 thousand hectares of vineyards, 0.35 million metric tons of grapes harvested, 2.2 million hectolitres of wine produced. These are the indicators of
Hungarian grape and wine production in 2014 when the quantity which was
lower than the average of the previous years, however, the quality was really
excellent. Most of the Hungarian wine production is white wine, one quarter
of it is red wine, and five percent is rosé wine; people all over the world toast
with this, give it as present or add it to their treasured collections.
Due to its exceptional natural features, Hungary is a prime agricultural
and wine-producing country. It was once considered Europe’s agricultural
heartland, which is not surprising, since the fruits of the Hungarian land, the
meat of the animals grazing the Hungarian pastures and the great Hungarian
foods and drinks did not only represent quality for us Hungarians but for all of
Europe. I believe that today it is the same way with winemaking. We only have
to think of the well-known and world-renowned Aszú wines of Tokaj.
The choice of wine is important so that we provide quality products to our
family, to our friends, on occasions of celebration, or to accompany a meal
prepared with devotion. It is for this reason that it is highly important for
us that the inimitable quality of the wines produced in Hungary can mean a
guarantee for European people in their everyday decisions.
We are glad to recommend to everyone the wines of the Hungarian wineries
presented in the ProWein fair, and we are confident that their unmatched
quality will speak for itself.
Please enjoy reading about and getting to know the Hungarian companies
and their products, and have a well-spent time during the exhibition!

TOKAJ
TOKAJI ASZÚ
TOKAJI ASZÚ IS A SWEET WINE
MADE IN THE TOKAJ-HEGYALJA REGION
FROM GRAPES AFFECTED BY NOBLE ROT.
/Louis XIV/
TOKAJ
10
“The wine of kings, the king of wines”, said
Louis XIV of France after tasting a glass
of Tokaji wine. Imagine the scene as the
matchless scent of this Hungarian wine
makes even the French monarch close his
eyes, and its unique flavour makes it clear
to him that this wine is of exceptional quality.
Although the Tokaji region is not a large region, the wine produced here is well-known
and indeed, the favourite of world-famous
people. Mozart for example is said to have
often enjoyed Tokaji wine. Its name may
easily turn up again in the Fausts of the future as it has in Goethe’s work:
The wonderfully romantic hillsides striped
with rows of grapevine, the distinctive
scent of cellars dug in the earth, the oak
barrels in which truly fine wine matures –
all these contribute to the mood that this
Hungarian wine has evoked in the lovers of
special drinks for hundreds of years. This
is why it has become part of the UNESCO
world heritage, further propagating the
exceptional natural resources of Hungary.
Sibel
(as Mephistopheles approaches his seat)
The unique flavour of Tokaji wine is a result of the peculiar synergy between the
soil and climate of Hegyalja. This magnificent savour is worth saving for the
younger generation as well, therefore the
Tokaji wine region is a closed region, which
means that grapes, must or wines from
other regions – except for bottled wines
– are not allowed in here. This is how the
increased protection of the region’s wines
and specialties can be guaranteed.
For me, I grant, sour wine is out of place;
Fill up my glass with sweetest, will you?
Mephistopheles
(boring)
Tokay shall flow at once, to fill you!
TOKAJ
VINUM REGUM,
REX VINORUM
Tokaji Aszú is made with a hundred-year-old technology that is based on the late harvesting of grapes affected by noble rot. During the process the individually selected grapes
are collected in a vat and mashed to become a pulp (or also known as aszú pastry) and
either wine, fermenting must or must is poured on them. The wine is then matured for at
least 3 years, of which at least 2 years are in wooden barrels.
Concentration of the Aszú used to be defined by how many buckets (“puttony”) of grapes
were soaked in a “gönci barrel” (136.6 l) of must. A wine could be 3, 4, 5 or 6 bucketed
(“puttonyos”). Although concentration is no longer defined in buckets, the labels on the
bottles still indicate this as this valuable tradition that both the region and Hungary may
be grateful for, deserves such reverence.

The Hungarian National Trading House Cls. (MNKH) was established by the Hungarian Government and the Hungarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The organisation
is tasked with implementing the new national foreign trade
strategy, opening new markets and new opportunities for
Hungarian companies and fostering the export of Hungarian goods and services.
The Hungarian National Trading House aims to offer complex services to provide a platform for Hungarian companies to launch their export activities, and to act as a matchmaker between Hungarian and foreign partners.
Its activities are built up by two main pillars: filtering the markets and searching for Hungarian companies with competitive products and services while measuring market requirements through Trading Houses on foreign markets.
Thanks to our efforts in this area, the number of Trading
Houses operating internationally has grown to 25 by the
end of year 2014, securing a presence worldwide.

PANNONHALMA WINE REGION
At the time of building the monastery, the Benedictine monks settled on the Sacred Hill of
Pannonia in 996 also revived the viticulture of the region. 50 years after the confiscations
following World War II, the Archabbey Pannonhalma and the MKB Bank wakened this tradition again by creating new plantations and winery. Two-thirds of the newly planted vineyards
of 50 ha total area were devoted to white and one-third to red grape varieties. The cellar
technology is suitable for producing 300,000 bottles of quality wine a year.

BALATONBOGLÁR WINE REGION
The AX & AX Winery lies on the south shore of the Lake Balaton, on the gentle slopes around
Kéthely. The wooded hills around Kéthely protect the vineyards against icy winds in winter
The estate cultivates about 58 hectares of vineyards, which were planted by the latest technology. The grapes are generally harvested and sorted by hand, and carefully processed.
The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks with a computer-controlled system. The
premium wines are aged in oak barrels from Hungarian oak.
Balatonboglár Winery (BB) was founded in 1956, and is the leading producer in the Balatonboglár wine region. This is one of the most beautiful areas lying along the south shore
of Lake Balaton.
The brand name “Chapel Hill” produced by BB comes from a small volcanic hill near the
village of Balatonboglár. On its summit stand two Chapels, one red and one blue, both were
built in the 19th century.

The Bock family has been making wine since 1850. At the beginning of his career József
Bock harvested from an area of 0.5 hectares, currently processes the harvest of 140 hectares of vineyards, producing 36 different kinds of wines.
We practice organic viticulture this means that we apply environmentally friendly solutions.
The fruit is harvested with special care and arrives each year at our premises equipped with
the most modern technologies, where 6-7000 hectolitres of wine is produced each year.
The vineyards of Csányi Winery are located on the best slopes of the Villány wine region.
Our total growing area exceeds 370 hectares.
Our modern bottling plant is equipped with the most up-to-date technology currently
available, ensuring the safe handling of our quality wines aged traditionally in wooden and/
or barrique barrels. We produce 2 million bottles annually. Our product structure is built
on classic grape varieties. As a new variety, Shiraz was introduced to our portfolio in 2014.

Chateau Dereszla, owned by the French d’Aulan family, with its historical wine cellar, is
located in the Premier Cru area of Tokaj. Its 60 hectares of vineyards are managed by an
enthusiastic Hungarian team, with long established expertise and a common philosophy of
perfection, consistency and pleasure. Our portfolio includes Tokaji Szamorodni, Aszú, Late
Harvest and Eszencia wines, as well as dry and semi dry Furmint and other varietals.
The family of the Counts of Degenfeld played an important role in the history of Tokaj.
As a pioneer in the Tokaj region the family converted to organic farming on 35 ha. Craftsmanship is perfectly fused with the most up-to-date technologies, which already won a lot
of international acknowledgements. Within the vineyards you can find a very elegant 4-star
castle hotel. The philosophy of the family is: quality, sustainability and respect for tradition.

The vineyards are located in the Badacsony wine region, on the northern shore of Lake
Balaton. In order to promote the characteristic flavours of the given terroir, and using
principles of organic production, we avoid chemical sprays and any further chemical
treatment of the finished wines. Since 8 th July 2014 our agriculture and vineyards are
certified as bio-agricultural holding acc. to the EU Reg. 834/2007.
The Szeremley Family cultivates 90 hectares of vineyards in the Badacsony wine region, situated on the northern shore of Lake Balaton. Volcanic soil and an exceptional microclimate
give these wines a unique minerality and balance. Besides international varieties we pay
attention to our local grapes like: Kéknyelű, Budai Zöld, Bakator or Zeus.
Products: dry white, red and roze wines from the Badacsony and Lake Balaton wine region.

BADACSONY WINE REGION
The 1746 archives of Szekszárd already mention the winemaker Eszterbauer family, whose
10th generation is János Eszterbauer. According to the region’s natural conditions, red varieties make up the majority of our product range, our flagship wine is Szekszárdi Kadarka.
In 2014 we harvested grapes from 23 hectares, and we produce about 80-100 thousand
bottles a year. Every year, our wines are successfully represented in the international wine
competitions. In 2015 our 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon was chosen to be the Wine of Budapest.
The Fischer family’s winery is located in the middle of the Balaton Uplands National Park.
The unique quality wines also known outside the country’s borders are produced on a land of
75 ha. Both red and white grapes are planted on this area. Extra quality wine has always been
a priority for the Fischer family who have created a plantation with higher grapevine density:
there are more than 6500 vines/ha. As a result of this higher vine density, there are less
grapes on each vine (cc. 1.2-1.5 kg), but extra costs result in an optimum of product quality.

the late 1990’s and took a chance to realize their dream - to produce fine wines at reasonable prices. Their passion for wine, combined with high quality standards and the outstanding terroir of Villány-Siklós has already born fruits. The vineyards are mainly south-facing,
planted at a density of 5.000 to 7.000 vines/ha. Yields are low at 30 - 40 hl/ha. Over 90% of the
vineyards hold the Premium status of the DHC (Districtus Hungaricus Controllatus) Villány.
A 540 ha wine property on the most beautiful hills of the wine region. The unique situation of
the vineyards results in many thousand-year-old tradition of wine crafting at the Hungarian

Huge temperature differences between day and night cause a complexity of aromas, thus
providing a secure base for wines exhibiting special personalities. The exceptional terrain

Patricius Winery is a modern winery in the Tokaj wine region, Hungary established in 2000
by the Kékessy family. The winery has 210 acres (85 ha) of vines in cultivation, growing traditional varieties of Tokaj. On the palette of our winery we have dry, late harvest and aszú
wines made of Furmint, Hárslevelű and Yellow Muscat.
Some winemakers offspring are quite content to create their own wine. But that is not the
case with the young Pfneiszl´s. They are creating their own wine estate! Birgit (31) and
Katrin (27) Pfneisl are the young Pfneiszl generation. Since the 2006 vintage the two “young
winemakers” are doing organic growing at their 13 hectare estate, which is located along
the south bank of Lake Neusiedl in the wine growing region of Sopron (Hungary).

The Royal Tokaji Wine Company Ltd. was founded in 1990, its headquarters is in Mád. The
mission of Royal Tokaji is to rescue the wonderful values of Hegyalja, to produce highquality Tokaj wines and to establish vineyard-selection, and to regain the world reputation of Tokaj wines. Royal Tokaji owns 108 hectares of its own vines in which the three
types of Tokaj grape varieties grow. The company also produces vineyard-selected Aszú
wines using exclusively the harvest of a particular vineyard.
It was an old dream of three classical musicians to take part in the regeneration of the great
tradition of winemaking in Tokaj. Based on their plans and ideas, the “score” was completed
in 1994 under the title “Tokaj Classic Winery Ltd.” With intensive work the winery has
achieved a success series for winemaking; International Wine & Spirit Competition awarded
gold medals to their Aszú wines in six consecutive years. The winery mostly produces sweet
wines. Only in the best years do they also come out with dry Furmint.

The Tokaj-Hétszőlő Estate’s unique and first class vineyards are situated on the southern
slopes of Mount Tokaj. In 1502, the Garai family assembled seven parcels of land which
became the Hétszőlő single vineyard. The estate has 55 hectares where a special micro-climate, the unique loess soil, the autochthon grape varieties and the “noble rot” give the
Hétszőlő wines exceptional harmony, unique complexity and very high quality.
Tokaj Kereskedőház is the largest winery of the Tokaji Wine Region. The winery is also the
primary preserver and guardian of Hungarian wine making traditions with more than half a
century of winemaking experience. Winemaking is best described by the numerous IWSC,
IWC, Challenge International du Vin, Vinitaly and Decanter medals, our wines were awarded
through the recent years and also by our Chief Winemaker, Mr. Karoly ATS, who is not just a
domestically well-known expert, but also an internationally recognized winemaker.

Our family cultivates 8 hectares of vines in the best historic vineyards of the Tokaj Wine
Region. Tokaj Pendits Estate was the first in the Tokaj region to be certified organic in 2008,
and since 2011 we have been a DEMETER-certified biodynamic winery, the first and only
such estate in Hungary. We aim to produce handcrafted wines in harmony with nature.
The Tornai family has been dealing with winemaking since 1946 on Mt. Somló. Today the land
measures 60 hectares and it is the third generation now that is engaged in the everyday tasks
of the wine-cellar. The ars poetica of our business, besides respecting traditions, is the use of
state-of-the-art winemaking and processing technologies. We have three wine brands: Fresh,
Premium, Top Selection. We distribute the Fresh wines primarily for supermarket chains,
while the Premium and Top Selection brands are primarily intended for HORECA.

There are several exciting varieties, from which wine is made in the Carpathian basin. The
varieties, which are closely attached or bred here, are often called as “Hungaricums”. For
this tasting we selected from such varieties, which are sometimes not found anywhere else
in the world. Their name can be difficult to pronounce, but they are always very interesting
and one of a kind. This individuality will be shown through this tutored tasting, where the
indigenous white grape varieties of Hungary reveal their versatile side. If you´re looking for
an exciting tasting, full of lesser known varieties, this should be your place.
Tokaj Hegyalja (Tokaj Foothills) is the world´s first demarcated wine region, and is where
the first natural Botrytis sweet wines were made as well. Today, not only are some of the
world’s most renowned sweet wines being made from the region’s unique terroir, but so
is a stunning range of dry and late harvest wines. Darrel Joseph, wine writer and judge
for the Decanter World Wine Awards, will guide you through a diverse tasting of today’s
Tokaji wines and explore what makes them so versatile and complex - from their leading
varieties, Furmint, Hárslevelű and Muscat Lunel, to the distinctive soils and climate of
the region. A truly exciting discovery of wines with incomparable beauty and expression!

The red grape varieties are in a slight minority compared to the whites in Hungary. Yet
there are plenty of exciting local red grapes and some well-known international ones,
which boost wines full of passion. Some region are famous for their blends, such as
in Szekszárd and Eger the Bikavér (Bull’s Blood), where Kékfrankos and Kadarka play
usually the main role in the blends. Diverse soil and climatic conditions from Sopron over
the Lake Balaton to the South and North of Hungary provide stunning diversity and plenty
of rich, delicate red wines. It´s really the diversity and the style, which makes the red
wines of Hungary so interesting, during the tutored tasting we will visit some of the best
red wine producing regions of Hungary and meet varieties, which make them stand out.
Tokaj is known by everyone in the world, it stands for high quality, natural (botrytis) sweet
wines and it is Hungary´s most famous wine region as well. While the law only allows
the production of white wines from the permitted varieties, yet thanks due to the diverse
micro- and mesoclimate and its winemaking technology, there are plenty of different
styles of wines to be made. Frank Roeder, German Master of Wine, wine merchant and
consultant, will take a close look at Tokaj and its wines, analysis the broad spectrum
regarding to the German market as well.

There are not many vine growing countries that make high quality wines on volcanic soil.
There are several legends and histories attached to these regions, the wines share an
individual rich aroma and flavour here. Usually white wines are produced on these lands,
yet here and there some red wine is made as well. From Somló, through Badacsony until
Tokaj minerality sometimes comes across as a salty touch. Yet everyone should decide, if
this tasting is for himself/herself, it will be an exciting meeting of fire and wine.
The Hungarian alphabet has 44 letters and they make every use of them in case of grape
varieties as well. There is no shortage on sometimes difficult to pronounce grape varieties, such as Cserszegi fűszeres, Királyleányka, Arany sárfehér, Hárslevelű and many
more. Elizabeth Gabay, Master of Wine from France, will take you on a wild ride of the
weird and wonderful maze of tongue breakers, which are not only exciting on the linguistic point of view, but also in the glass.

A question which always comes up: what works better in a given region varietal wines
or blends? While it depends on the circumstances and many different factors. Hungary
has several blends, which made it famous. Just think for example the Bikavér (Bull’s
Blood) or the recent white wine, the Egri Csillag (Star of Eger) or even the aszú wines. Yet
some discoveries as varietal wines, such as Cabernet Franc from Villány and Olaszrizling
(Welschriesling) from Lake Balaton can be in favour for those, who appreciate the single
varietal wines. During the tutored tasting everyone can decide for himself/herself, what
works best for the specific wine region.
There are less and less wine regions in the world, which stand out during blind tastings
with their typicity and unique style. Tokaji aszú wines are truly one of them, so-called
“bankers”. This can be thanked to the extraordinary terroir. The style of the aszú wines
shares high acidity, luscious sweetness and moderate well-balanced alcohol. An excellent harmony, freshness and sweetness with richness, complexity and almost never ending finish.
After the vintage 2013, only 5 and 6 puttonyos aszús are allowed to be produced, hence
even a higher quality is introduced to the wine region. Let’s dive deep into the seductive
taste of sweetness, purity and complexity.

Kékfrankos (a.k.a. Blaufränkisch) is Hungary´s most planted red variety and while it can
be found across Austria and Germany as well, it provides some fascinating styles on the
Hungarian soil and climate. Very versatile, often used as a blending partner for instance
in Bikavér (Bull’s Blood) wines, but also used as varietal from Sopron to Szekszárd. From
fruity and elegant wines to full bodied and rich ones. Anne Krebiehl, Master of Wine, will
