The survivors are of all ages, races, backgrounds, and religions. Some of them are affluent and some live in poverty. And all are a reminder that no one is immune from domestic violence and sexual assault. One of our survivors came in last month, with a young son and her new baby; she was bringing donations of kitchen items. She asked if she could speak to me for a minute, and shared her story of coming to the shelter a few years ago with her son, after her soon to be ex-husband had again become violent. She didn’t want her son to continue to live in an abusive home, and had nowhere to go. She is back on her feet now, with a new life, and a husband who loves and cherishes her, her son, and their baby. Her gratitude was so heartfelt, it was a powerful reminder that the work we do makes a difference every day. DearCommunity I’m pleased to present a summary of 2009 activities here at SafeHouse Center. As you’ll see, it was a busy year, a challenging year, and a year in which we saw demand for our services increase, at times dramatically. We were able to meet that demand thanks to the extraordinary efforts of our staff and the extraordinary generosity of our supporters. We are deeply grateful to everyone whose name appears on our annual Donor Roll in this newsletter. Without your support, we could not continue meeting the needs of all the survivors who seek our services. Every day, we hear stories of difficulty and challenges, but one of the things that makes our work so satisfying is the fact that we KNOW we’re making a difference. We hear the difference we are making in the hope and gratitude voiced by survivors, from notes we receive, and from the survivors who come in with donations for other survivors. On the following pages, you will find some of the notes and messages we have received. We thought it was important to share these messages. After all, they’re written to you as well. Because, without you, we couldn’t be the SafeHouse Center that people throughout Washtenaw County have come to know and trust. Because of you, we can offer a safe, secure, caring refuge—and a second chance at life—for survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse. A Community Wall featured jeans decorated by community partners who join SafeHouse Center in responding to sexual assault in Washtenaw County. These jeans reflected the missions and experiences of our partner agencies while helping sexual assault survivors. Taken as a whole, the Denim Jean Art reflected ongoing efforts continuously made to spread awareness, to break the silence, and to empower all of us to unite together in an effort to end sexual violence.
