Lessons Learned on Modular Shielded Cells
Presenter: Steven Shaw, P.E. Existing Facility Limited Headroom Limited Access No infrastructure Future Compatible Aggressive Schedule Codes and Standards Individual component weights may not exceed floor loading. Design for assembly on site without a crane. Features to provide maximum future compatibility. Remotely replaceable in-cell lighting. Remotely replaceable exhaust roughing filters. Shielding Performance In-cell hoists Adjustable lighting Cell dimensions 3 cell types Standard Shield Wall Thickness Reconfigurable Interconnect able Sealed and Nonsealed. Stainless Tub Epoxy Coated The design basis also provided for 3-different gloveboxes, and a modular shielded storage module. STANDARD MODULAR HOT CELL 62,500 kg (138,000 lbs) STANDARD MODULAR CELL MANIPULATOR REACH ENVELOPES STANDARD MODULAR HOT CELL INTERNAL VOLUME 78” W x 100 H x 54 D Provision for an optional St Stl liner Provision for inert (N2) operation The design shall include a minimum of 5 replaceable feed through penetration ports. The design shall incorporate features that would accommodate the installation of removable work trays capable of supporting 20 lb/sq ft above the floor of the cell. STANDARD MODULAR HOT CELL MECHANICAL PROPERTIES TEST CELL The internal volume of the modular hot cell shall be 96 inches wide, 100 inches high, and 72 inches deep. Shall include a work table located directly in front of the operating window. One manipulator work station (two mechanical manipulators, CRL Model E or equivalent as approved by the Buyer) shall be provided. An in-cell lifting capability not less than 1000 pounds shall be provided. In addition to the penetrations required for installation of the MTS and INSTRON equipment, no less than 2 replaceable feed through penetration ports shall be provided. In-cell storage shall be provided below the work table surface for interim storage of source terms stored in two 150 pound shielded containers. MECHANICAL PROPERTIES TEST CELL 80,500 kg (177,000 lbs) MECHANICAL PROPERTIES TEST CELL MANIPULATOR REACH ENVELOPES MECHANICAL PROPERTIES TEST CELL MECHANICAL PROERTIES TEST CELL METALOGRAPHY CELL The internal volume of the modular hot cell shall be 144 inches wide, 100” high, and 72 inches deep. An in-cell lifting capability not less than 1000 pounds shall be provided. Two work stations (4 manipulators, CRL or Buyer approved equivalent) shall be incorporated into the cell. The design of the cell shall include the ability to potentially partition between the two work stations. In-cell storage shall be provided below the work table surface for interim storage of source terms stored in shielded containers. Sample storage shall be easily accessed. One work station (farthest from the maintenance access door) will be provided with a work table that covers approximately 50% of the station work area (split front to back) of the cell. 3The cell design shall include a minimum of 5 replaceable feed through penetration ports. METALOGRAPHY CELL 103,500 kg (228,000 LBS) METALOGRAPHY CELL MANIPULATOR REACH ENVELOPES METALOGRAPHY CELL METALOGRAPHY CELL STANDARDIZATION:REDUCE DESIGN AND FABRICATION COST STEEL WALLS: REDUCE ANALYTICAL DESIGN COST. MULTIPLE DESIGN REVIEWS 30%, CONCEPTUAL & COST ESTIMATE 60%, INCLUDING INDEPENDENT REVIEWS, VERIFIED CONSISTANCY BETWEEN SAFETY AUTHORIZATION AND RADIOLOGICAL DESIGN REQUIREMENTS. 90%, TOP LEVEL ASSEMBLIES 100% RELEASE FOR FABRICATION DELIVERED APPROXIMATELY 6 WEEKS EARLY. SUBSTITUTIONS OF KEY COMPONENTS (SHIELD WINDOWS) NOT AUTHORIZED BY DESIGN AGENT. MONTHS BEHIND SCHEDULED DELIVERY. NON-CONFORMING PARTS APPROVED BY QC. DESIGN AGENT WAS NOT FUNDED TO PARTICPATE IN VENDOR ACCEPTANCE TESTING. LEAD TO A NUMBER OF ISSUES. LACK OF DESIGN AGENT PARTICIPATION IN NON-CONFORMANCE RESOLUTION RESULTED IN UNNECESSARY REDESIGN. ROUGHING FILTER REDESIGN NEW PRESSURE DROP REQUIREMENTS NEW MINIMUM AIR CHANGE RATES ESTABLISHED SHIELDING REDESIGN RECLASSIFIED CELLS TO OCCUPIED SPACE RESULTING ELECTRICAL CODE CHANGES REQUIRED REDESIGN. HOT CELL TESTING WENT WELL AFTER DESIGN MODIFICATIONS PER THE NEW DESIGN CRITERIA. SOME ISSUES WITH GLOVEBOX TESTING… How many times should you replace a piece of glass before checking for fabrication issues? ANSWER: Seven, because QC said it was according to print. Turns out the best way to pressure a box to 150 Pa Isn’t with a nitrogen bottle and industrial regulator. STANDARD METALOGRAPHY MECHANICAL TEST OPERATIONS INVOLVEMENT IS CRITICAL! “ If operations is involved, it doesn’t matter how bad it is. If operation’s is not involved, it doesn’t matter how good it is.” DESIGN AGENT INVOLVEMENT IN PROCURMENT AND PROJECT EXECUTION IS CRITICAL! Research scientists and project managers may not make the best design engineers. SCHEDULE: WHEN YOUR HAIR’S ON FIRE, YOU MAY NOT EXERCISE THE BEST JUDGEMENT. WHEN YOU WANT IT BAD, THAT’S WHAT YOU’LL GET. LOW PRICE BIDDERS… IT’S NOT THE SAME AS LOW COST. CONSIDER: STEP ONE OR THE ALTERNATIVE: PRESENTER: STEVEN SHAW, P.E. [email protected] 1 (303) 353-3818
