“My name is Bobby Joe and I wanted to let people know how excited I am not only to have connected with my native heritage but to
have made connections with my family once again. My friends at
Braemar have been helping me reach out to my native community
by taking me to the annual Pow Wow that is held in either Toronto
or Hamilton for many years now. I love listening to the drums!
For the past few years, they have also been helping me try to find
someone from my family when we lost touch in the early 1990’s.
We would go to the reserve I am from and try talking with people.
When that didn’t work, we wrote a letter asking the social worker
on the reserve if they could help. IT WORKED! My mom called one
of my friends in July and invited me to a family reunion. It was
great as I got to see lots of my aunts, uncles, cousins and even some
of my brothers. It was a long drive but worth the trip.
“My name is Adam. I live in Toronto with my housemates Doug, Bernie and Susannah. I achieved one of
my summer goals which was to visit Great Wolf Lodge
for two days. Living in an integrated community I am
adjusting to my role by volunteering and also reading
to children in two schools, which is a great achievement for me. Once a week I go to a program called
Active 8 where I do cooking classes and swimming.”
Most of my family live far away but with help from my friends, we
have been keeping in touch by email and phone. I am also going to
visit my brother in Orillia for Thanksgiving.
I am so glad that we didn’t give up on my goal of re-connecting with
my family. It might have seemed like a long shot but it was worth
the journey.”
This past fall, the Annual Outcomes Celebration was held on October 26, 2010. Throughout the month of October leading up to this wonderful even, many people shared the successes they had experienced throughout the past year. Personal Outcome Measures and Person
Centered Planning work together to ensure that the quality of life of the people we support is enhanced in order to achieve our KPAS Mission to enhance the quality of life for people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder by being leaders in: developing and providing evidence-based
support; and building capacity by sharing our knowledge and expertise.
The people at Chalet were proud to highlight their personal achievements. Kelley, Paul R. Dana and Paul D consented to having their pictures taken while they were engaged in their various jobs and volunteer duties within their community. While basking in their achievements,
they got the news that they were also voted “Carrier of the Month” by the North York Mirror. Kelley, Paul R and Paul D along with people
from nearby Malamute have been delivering the local newspaper for over 5 years and were very pleased to be acknowledged for their work.
Everyone is motivated to continue to serve and be a part of the community as we enter the new year.
“Well, the day had finally come! It would be the first time that Herschel D. would take an airplane ride, a goal he had set out to achieve as part of this
recent Person Centered Plan (PCP). Early one October afternoon, Herschel, his housemate and two staff arrived at Pearson International Airport to embark upon an exciting mini-vacation to Ottawa for the weekend. The airplane ride was a success! Herschel spend most of the ride gripping the armrest
and looking out the window while his housemate loved the flight attendant demonstration and showed his appreciation by giving a round of applause. All
in all, they both did an amazing job on the plane. After a short, but shaky 40 minute ride, we arrived in Ottawa around 5p.m. that evening. We quickly
made our way to our hotel, the Sheraton Four points, to check-in and get settled, then it was off to St. Hubert’s to enjoy a nice chicken dinner. Back at
the hotel, everyone was beat and hit the sack in anticipation of the day to come. The next day was filled with lots or walking, sightseeing and exploring.
Herschel and his housemate went to parliament Hill, the Currently Museum, the Byward Market, and even went on a tour of the Royal Canadian Mint.
To wind down an exciting day, we all went swimming at the hotel followed by a relaxing time in the hot tub. We then quickly got changed and ready for
dinner. The guys had a fantastic dinner at Milestone’s Restaurant and loved the unlimited coke refills! We then returned back to pack up our things and
get ready to check-out the next morning. After check-out on Sunday, Herschel and housemate explored the Museum of Civilization and had lunch at the
café downstairs. Soon after it was time to head back to the airport. We were all tired but managed to make it to the gate on time, have a snack, and
watch the airplanes on the runway. We arrived back at home around 7p.m. after a fun-filled weekend in our nation’s capital. Since Herschel and his
housemate had a fabulous time he thought that he would plan another vacation down to the Caribbean in the spring.”

The Dunin Foundation Brightens the Lives of
York Region Families
During the 2010 Holiday Season, The Dunin Foundation supported over 30 KPAS families
in need. Families were provided with basic necessities as well as toys and games for the
little ones. The Dunin Foundation’s contribution is beyond words in terms of the impact it
has made over the past 3 years of this holiday program. The families are truly grateful for
being able to celebrate a holiday season that they would not have had without The Dunin
Foundation’s generosity and truly festive giving spirit.
The Catherine & Maxwell Meighen Foundation Renews Its Generosity
KPAS is pleased to announce that The Catherine & Maxwell Meighen Foundation has renewed its commitment to supporting
people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Over the past many year, The Catherine & Maxwell Meighen Foundation has
made significant contributions to KPAS and as a result, has helped KPAS to advance its programs and services to over 5,000
people each year.
“The Catherine & Maxwell Meighen Foundation is a long-time supporter of Kerry’s Place Autism Services. KPAS has been of
great benefit for people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and their families for many years yet the need continues to grow.
We hope that Kerry’s Place continues to succeed in its mission of enhancing the quality of lives of people with an Autism
Spectrum Disorder” says Vanessa Morgan, President of The Catherine & Maxwell Meighen Foundation.
KPAS is truly grateful for The Catherine & Maxwell Meighen Foundation’s generous support and congratulates them on making a difference in the lives of people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder.

WINTER 2010/11
In November 2010, The Edwards Charitable Foundation generously provided $10,000 towards the
development of Social Skills Programs for children
and youth with an Autism Spectrum Disorder and
the families in Toronto.
“We are delighted to have been granted this funding. It will enable us to provide programming for
children and youth with an Autism Spectrum Disorder this year. The funds will go towards a social
skills group, sibling support groups and multi-arts
programming. Toronto Region is really excited to
start the programs and thanks The Edwards Charitable Foundation for its generosity!” says Stephanie
Conant, Manager in KPAS Toronto.
The Edwards Charitable Foundation funding will be
used throughout 2011 and will foster the learning of
various life skills while providing educational and
vocational opportunities for developing children and
youth.
“My name is Michael and I want to update everyone on how well I am
doing. For many years, I used to spend most of my time alone in my room
and that was the way that I wanted it. Now, my life is so much better, so
much fuller. I really like to be around other people and enjoy spending time
in the community. The busier I am being out and about, the happier I am.
I went to Centre Island in August. I had a blast, sight seeing and playing at
the water park and the beach! I also like visiting restaurants like Swiss
Chalet, going to Parks and Recreation Centre’s like the Brampton Soccer
Centre and visiting with everyone at the office at Van Kirk. In July I went to
the cottage where I slept away from my home for the FIRST TIME. I was
really excited and had a great time! This is a really BIG accomplishment for
me because I am now able to go on longer trips to various places, and most
importantly I am now able to spend more time with my family. My mom
has been with me through everything over the years and I am now able to
spend time with my sister Rachel at her house by myself every Tuesday. We
have been having a blast and I even stayed overnight! It was so exciting and
as always we had so much fun. This past June my sister Rachel organized a
family BBQ where I was able to reunite with my father who I haven’t seen in
over 20 years! When I saw him, I was so excited that I sat beside him for
most of the time I was there. As you can see, this past year has been pretty
incredible for me in accomplishing so many of my goals. I want to thank my
family, the Braemar team members past and present for their dedication
and continued support and patience. The sky is the limit for me and I am
looking forward to see what I will accomplish next!”
Chuck the Chameleon by Steven Rose
Steven Rose is an incredibly gifted artist and illustrator with an astonishing work ethic. His very
first comic book published in 2010, sold out of the first print run within less than two weeks! A
local store in Steven’s neighborhood, Aardvark Music & Culture,
being much impressed by his talent, has happily agreed to stock
and sell all future issues of his work commission-free... if only he
can hang on to them long enough to get them onto the shelves!
Steven is currently working on a number of projects as well as
maintaining a keen focus on his studies at Orangeville District
Secondary School. His support team is proud to have assisted him
in realizing and furthering his goal of being a published author and
look forward to helping him share his wonderful art in future.
You can find Chuck the Chameleon on Facebook (“Chuck Chameleon”) or email Chuck at [email protected]

KPAS was honoured to welcome back Mr. Tony Hope to its head office to present
a further installment from the Masonic Foundation of Ontario in support of the
KPAS Enhanced Support Fund.
The Enhanced Support Fund was established over 8 years ago by KPAS and serves
as an emergency response for short-term, one-time funding for people supported
by KPAS. Past approved requests have included consultation/therapy sessions,
emergency respite, and seed funds. The Enhanced Support Fund is made possible
entirely through the generosity of donors.
The Masonic Foundation of Ontario is a long-time supporter of the KPAS
Enhanced Support Fund and has made a tremendous difference in the lives of
hundreds of people with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. Thank you Masonic

WINTER 2010/11
My doctor takes the time to listen. She schedules appointments at the end of the day so we get the time we need.
Doctors’ visits take up less than 10% of her life...but are a constant source of aggravation.
My son has always been treated by his paediatrician. He is now 22 and our doctor is saying that she really can’t see him anymore but
we don’t know anyone willing to take him on. What are we supposed to do?
My daughter has to be put under to have a dental exam. So we work with our family doctor, dentist and neurologist to plan this in advance and organize all of the other examinations that have to get done for the same time. Otherwise, we would never be able to do
blood work for her seizure meds and other things that come up.
In our small town hospital, the nurse who took him to surgery also works with him part-time on the weekends...it was so personal.
When we go to emergency, we don’t go into a cubicle...we get a room all to ourselves.
I waited with my son in the mental health ward for 4 hours before anyone came to talk to us. The person that came to talk to him was
a caseworker, new to the hospital. She was very nice but didn’t seem to know very much. She did not do an assessment, just determined that he no longer needed to be at the hospital and said he could leave.
It keeps me up at night...people are trying to work within a broken health system.
What has your experience been like using health services such as doctors, dentists or psychologists for your
son or daughter? We have heard stories from parents describing both poor and excellent care. We want to understand
better why things work well, and why they fail. It is only with your involvement as parents that we can learn what works and
what doesn’t and share this information with doctors and other health professionals, government and families like you to
bring about change.
This project will ask you questions about your recent contact with health professionals regarding your adolescent (12+) or
adult son or daughter with ASD. The first set of questions takes about 30 minutes and follow-ups over the next year take 10
minutes or less. We want to know if your son or daughter is getting the health care he or she needs, what types of health
services he or she is using and your satisfaction with these services. Also, if you are not using any services, we would like to
know why and whether you are satisfied with your situation. Your voice is important and we need to hear from you!
Parents will receive an honorarium for their time.
If you would like to participate, go to: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/Family_Study_Consent or call Maggie at (416) 5358501 ext. 7806

Rights are important to all of us!
At Kerry’s Place Autism Services (KPAS), we support and encourage
people to exercise their rights the same as all citizens of Canada.
KPAS is looking for new volunteer members to join our Rights
Committee. This committee provides an independent review of
rights limitations to ensure the balance of rights, risks and responsibilities for the people supported through our agency. The committee
also provides input to KPAS procedures and practices that may
Dr. Jonathan Weiss, M. Catherine Cappadocia, and Dr. Yona Lunsky

Youth with ASD are often at risk for experiencing bullying, which can have a long standing impact on their mental
health and on how they see their peers. Less is known about the risks for adolescents or young adults with ASD
