Contrast Enhanced Mammography was also recently
introduced. Radiologists utilize this type of diagnostic
screening following inconclusive mammogram results. It can
help detect the presence or absence of breast cancer sooner.
We are excited about the opening of our North Cypress
High Risk Breast Clinic, that opened in January. Led by Dr.
Kim Keller, this program provides comprehensive breast
cancer assessment and education for patients identified as
having an increased risk for breast cancer. We know that
high risk women benefit from close monitoring to diagnose
breast cancer early when it is more treatable.
In late Spring of 2016, we will be adding a satellite location
for our Sports Medicine Center. The new clinic will be
on the second floor of the professional building at our
Towne Lake location. It will feature physical therapy and
rehabilitation services for those recovering from orthopedic
injuries and features much of the same equipment and
services as our main campus.
Greetings Friends and Neighbors,
The physicians and staff of North Cypress Medical Center
have been very busy this past year treating and caring for
patients. The hospital, however, continues to expand. We
recently opened two new satellite emergency rooms in
busy neighborhood communities. North Cypress Emergency
Room Towne Lake opened in the summer of 2015 in the
ever-growing Towne Lake community. It features a beautiful
full service emergency room open 24/7 with outpatient
imaging and a lab. We are proud to offer one of the area’s only
completely Open MRI machines, as well as 3D mammography
at that location. This past Fall, North Cypress Emergency
Room Fairfield opened. Similar to our other satellite
emergency rooms, the Fairfield location is a full service
emergency room open 24/7 with outpatient imaging and a lab.
I am proud to announce that North Cypress has received
several awards over the past few months. Healthgrades
recently named North Cypress as one of America’s Top 100
Hospitals for Coronary Intervention and a five star recipient
for Total Knee Replacement. I am extremely proud of both
our cardiology program and orthopedic program. Women’s
Choice Award named North Cypress Medical Center
One of America’s Best Hospitals for Bariatric Surgery and
Orthopedic Surgery. They also named North Cypress as
one of America’s Best Stroke Centers. The hospital was also
named as one of the Most Wired Hospitals by the American
Hospital Association. This award focuses on health records
security and patient engagement via an electronic medium.

The hospital has recently expanded our Women’s Breast
Center services. 3D Mammography is now offered at both
the main hospital campus Women’s Breast Center and at our
Towne Lake location. This technology assists the Radiologist
in providing earlier detection of small breast cancers that may
be hidden during digital mammography.

S
eventy-seven year old Cypress resident Gary Tesch is
an “extremely active” gentleman who began experiencing
knee pain about ten years ago. He found that his once
hour long treadmill runs were being cut shorter and
shorter by the pain. He began trying non-surgical options
to treat the pain such as cortisone shots which helped
for a while but eventually stopped being effective.
He scheduled an appointment with Dr. David Mack,
Orthopedic Surgeon, to evaluate his options. Mr. Tesch
was extremely impressed with Dr. Mack after attending
one of his informative seminars and visiting with him
during his appointment, but wasn’t ready to proceed with
surgery and decided to wait a while. He and his wife took
an adventurous river cruise to France where they walked
approximately 15 miles a day site seeing. “By the end of
each day, I was hobbling, and taking ibuprofen to get
through the trip” says Tesch, “when I returned home, I
knew that it was time for surgery.”
Tesch was thrilled when Dr. Mack explained a newer
procedure and implant that he was performing called a
Customized Knee Replacement. Mack explained that the
implant would be made based on Tesch’s own knee anatomy
from a CT scan and would allow for more natural motion.
After scheduling surgery, Tesch attended a Joint Class
at North Cypress Medical Center, “I feel like this really
made a difference for me, I went in with my eyes wide
open and knew exactly what to expect before, during and
after surgery. I was even encouraged to bring my wife so
that she would have all the information as well in case I
missed anything” said Mr. Tesch. “I was out of bed right
away, aided by the amazing staff on the Joint Center floor.
I was able to drive in 3 or 4 days and the post-op therapy I
received at the North Cypress Sports Medicine Center
went very smoothly.”
It’s now been over a year since Mr. Tesch’s Customized Knee
Replacement, he’s back in the gym 3 days a week, using the
elliptical machine, treadmill and resistance equipment.

He wishes now that he hadn’t put off the surgery for so long
but says that each person knows when their quality of life
has deteriorated to a point where they know it’s time to take
action. When asked how his life has changed since his
knee replacement Tesch says “I’m no longer limited by
what my knee will allow me to do, I’m back to all the
activities I love with no pain.”

We also have support specialists, including oncology
nurses, an oncology social worker, and an oncology
navigator to help smoothly guide our patients from
cancer diagnosis through their journey.
JK: Primarily I feel the goal, in addition to providing
the medical / technological expertise, is to make this
difficult time as easy as possible for the patients. We
want them to feel supported physically and emotionally
by every person they come into contact with. Coming to
North Cypress becomes such a large part of their lives, it
is vital that we make their time here as accommodating,
comfortable and simplified as we can.
What are the most exciting services you have added in
the last year?
Undergoing cancer treatment and coping with all
that goes along with treatment can be a difficult
process. North Cypress Cancer Center, located
within North Cypress Medical Center, offers the
latest treatment options with expertly trained staff
and physicians. However, it doesn’t stop there.

discuss examples of this in their everyday practice.
What do you feel the goal of North Cypress Cancer Center
is in providing patient care?
KK: The goal of the Cancer Center is to provide top-notch
cancer care in a comprehensive manner to all our
patients, whether they are from the CyFair community,
greater Houston, other regions in Texas, or even other
countries. We offer a multidisciplinary approach with
surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiation oncology,
and immuno-oncology.
KK: We are proud to offer a state-of-the art Breast Center
which provides the newest technology and expertise for
our patients. We provide the latest 3-D Mammography,
ultra-sound and MRI. We are one of the few centers
in Houston that has Breast Specific Gamma Imaging
(BSGI). The Medical Director of the North Cypress
Breast Center, Dr. Craig Thiessen, is a renowned world
expert of BSGI technology. In addition, the Breast
Center is the first in Texas to have the Gamma Loc
system. This system allows us to use BSGI to identify
accurately and perform biopsy of any suspicious areas
of the breast. Currently, this new technology, also
called “contrast” enhanced mammography, has been
introduced by the North Cypress Breast Center to
Cypress, Northwest Houston and surrounding areas.
Now open for the 2016 year is our High Risk Breast
Clinic which serves women who are at higher risk for
developing breast cancer.
JK: In addition to the technology and coordinated care, we
felt it was important to look at services that could make
our patients’ care less stressful and more relaxed. The
Cancer Center began offering massage to patients who
are currently undergoing treatment in a partnership with
Oncology Massage Alliance. Hand and feet massages
are available one day a week to patients currently in
treatment. The response to this has been amazing and
patients seem to truly appreciate this extra support.
Are there any other noteworthy services North
Cypress Cancer Center offers to the community?

KK: As early detection is the key to effectively treating cancer,
the Cancer Center has also established a Lung Cancer
Screening Program. This program is designed for
smokers and ex-smokers who are at much higher risks
for developing lung cancer during their lifetimes.
JK: Many complementary programs are in place to help
patients in their cancer journey including support
groups, yoga, art therapy, nutritional support, and
cancer rehabilitation programs. We know that offering
treatment is only half the equation for our patients,
it is important that we also provide the support and
resources that go beyond the treatment. Over the
summer, we proudly partnered with YMCA Livestrong
at the CyCreek YMCA. This is a research-based, physical
activity and well-being program designed to help cancer
survivors achieve their holistic health goals.
What does the human touch mean to you?
KK: I think the most important component to oncology
care that distinguishes our program from the other
hospitals in the area is the human element. My own
personal experience has acted as a guide for how I go
about treating and interacting with my patients. I was
sixteen when my father died of cancer and my mother
is a 30 year cancer survivor. I have seen the best and
worst of how cancer can affect all of us. This feeling of
empathy is something that cannot be taught, even in
the best medical schools.
JK: So many of our staff members have huge hearts for
cancer patients. Through many years of training,
our team offers unique understanding, compassion,
and support only gained through life experience. We
experience their highs and their lows. We treat our
patients as well-loved members of our families.
Do the patients seem responsive to the extra care
and support you are providing?
KK: Our patients often show their appreciation for the
care they receive. We have many who come back
and tell us how much it meant to them, many write
letters, etc. Most recently, a family of a patient
donated a blanket warmer to the cancer center
in her memory. Another North Cypress Cancer
Center patient recently spent six months creating a
magnificent quilt that she donated to Project Pink,
our annual breast cancer fundraiser.
JK: Our patients seem very pleased with the programs
and services we provide. Attendance at our support
groups is fantastic. Our patients are not the only
ones who benefitting; many in the community have
discovered our services as well. We are proud that
the word is out that we are a community based cancer
center and that so many people are responding
positively to our programs and the care we provide.

UPDATES & NEW REVOLUTIONARY TECHNOLOGIES
North Cypress High Risk Breast Clinic
Initiated in January of 2016, the High Risk Breast Clinic
provides comprehensive assessment and education for patients
identified as having an increased risk for breast cancer. High
risk women benefit from screening and close monitoring
to diagnose breast cancer early when it’s more treatable.
Patients may be at risk for developing breast cancer if they
answer YES to ANY of the following questions:
Are you over the age of 40 or younger with a family history
of breast cancer?
Do you or a family member have breast cancer?
Have you had an abnormal mammogram, breast ultrasound
or breast biopsy?
Do you have any family history of the cancer gene (i.e.
BRCA) or ovarian cancer?
Are you of Eastern European or Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry?
Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach with an array of medical
professionals, The North Cypress High Risk Breast Cancer
Clinic includes:
3D Mammography – The Newest Screening
and Diagnostic Imaging Tool
North Cypress now provides 3D Mammography at
both our main hospital campus and our Towne Lake
Imaging location. The latest in breast cancer screening,
3D Mammography is shown to improve the early
detection of breast cancer. This technology allows
the Mammography Tech to take multiple images in
seconds. These images are then able to be viewed by
the Radiologist as a separate image or an interactive
animation examining the tissue one thin layer at a time.
It is used in conjunction with 2D Mammography and is
safe for women with breast implants.
Contrast Enhanced Mammography
Performed when inconclusive results are found in
mammography and ultrasound, Contrast Enhanced
Mammography uses an iodine contrast agent during
testing. This diagnostic test can assist the physician
in providing answers sooner regarding the presence or
absence of breast cancer. It can also help to minimize
the waiting time and worry of a patient anxious to get
results. The Radiologist will use this test as deemed
necessary from your initial Mammography results.

Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation can help. This type of rehab
is an individualized Physical Therapy treatment program
that strengthens and re-educates weak inner pelvic
floor muscles that can result in urinary incontinence,
urinary urgency, and pelvic organ prolapse. Pelvic
Floor Rehabilitation can involve flexibility and
strength assessment, a pelvic area internal and external
muscle assessment and treatment, postural exercises,
relaxation techniques, and more.

Treatment is dependent on each individual person’s

Frequent urges to use the restroom or incontinence that
limits your physical activities can be an indication of
weak or under-active pelvic floor muscles. Urinary or fecal
incontinence, urgency / frequency of urination, and / or pain
in the pelvic region can all be signs of weak pelvic muscles.
The pain experienced can include pain in the abdominals,
buttocks, pelvic floor, tailbone, vagina, rectum, penis or
testicles. Pelvic floor muscles can become weak, tight, or
spastic as a result of pregnancy, surgery, or trauma.

Towne Lake Campus
Conveniently located at the corner of
Barker Cypress and Lakecrest View Dr,
in the hub of the Towne Lake retail
development. In addition to caring for minor
and major emergencies, the Towne Lake
location offers an outpatient imaging center
providing ultrasound, CT scan, and Women’s
imaging with the latest 3D mammography
technology. This campus also offers a truly
“open” Philips1.0 MRI, one of the best in
the area, which provides relief to those with
claustrophobia or simply require a little more
space, while maintaining the highest image
quality for the physician.
North Cypress Emergency Room
Fairfield Campus (newest location)
North Cypress Medial Center has expanded its network of
full service emergency rooms to better serve Cypress and
the surrounding areas. In addition to our three existing
emergency room locations, we are now offering full service,
24-hour emergency care as well as outpatient imaging and
lab services in The Towne Lake and Fairfield communities.
The Fairfield campus is located at Mason Rd.
and Cypresswood Drive and is easily accessible
from 290 as well as from within the Fairfield
Community. It features seven treatment
rooms to accommodate all emergency needs,
outpatient lab services, and outpatient imaging
with fluoroscopy ultrasound and CT scan.
Both campuses include adjoining professional
office buildings which will house several specialty
physician practices once fully completed.
The North Cypress Sports Medicine Center
will open a second location at the Towne
Lake Professional Building in late Spring.

BREATHE A LITTLE EASIER
How Does The Technology Work?
The American College of Asthma, Allergy and
Immunology reports that sinusitis affects 31
million people in the United States. Americans
spend over $1 billion each year on over-the-counter
medications to treat it.
Sinusitis is the inflammation of the sinuses and is often
caused by a bacterial infection. Viruses and fungi can also
cause sinusitis. Symptoms include headache, stuffy nose,
facial pain and runny nose.
Step 1: LOCATE. Your physician first locates the sinus area
to be treated.
Step 2: PLACE. The device is carefully positioned.
Step 3: DILATE. Your physician gently inflates the small
balloon and dilates the treatment area to restore drainage.

If you experience chronic sinusitis (lasting more than three
weeks), sinus surgery may be the way to relieve your symptoms.
Typically sinusitis is first treated with medication. This may
include antibiotics or nasal steroid sprays to reduce mucosal
swelling and fight infection. For those with chronic sinusitis
however, surgery may be an option. The goals of sinus surgery
are to clear blocked sinuses restoring normal sinus drainage
and to preserve normal anatomy and mucosal tissue.

When The Sinus Balloon Is Inflated, It
Restructures And Widens The Walls Of
The Sinus Passageway While Maintaining
The Integrity Of The Sinus Lining
Previously, sinus surgery, although using an endoscope, was
much more involved and invasive. Recovery often included
packing the nose with gauze, oral antibiotics, saltwater nasal
washes, and steroid nasal spray for six months.
Balloon Sinuplasty is a newer endoscopic procedure performed
by an ENT physician (Ear, Nose, and Throat or
Otolaryngologist) that utilizes a little different instrumentation.
What Is The Balloon Sinuplasty System?
This technology utilizes a small, flexible, sinus balloon catheter
that is placed into the nose to reach the sinuses. The sinus
balloon catheter is gradually inflated to gently restructure the
previously blocked nasal passage, maintaining the integrity
of the sinus lining and restoring normal sinus drainage and
function. There is minimal bleeding and many patients are
able to return to normal activities within 24 hours.
Clinical research has indicated that Balloon Sinuplasty is a
safe and effective tool in dilating blocked sinuses.

What Is Colorectal Cancer?
Cancer of the colon or rectum is called colorectal cancer.
It occurs when abnormal cells form tumors in normal
tissues of the intestine and digestive system. Like other
types of cancer, colorectal cancer can spread to other
parts of your body.
The colon is the longest part of the large intestine. The
rectum is the bottom part of the large intestine.
Am I At Risk For Colorectal Cancer?
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reports
that 1 in 3 adults ages 50 to 75 are not being
screened for colorectal cancer. Despite research
that shows that early detection of colon cancer
saves lives, the screening rates are too low.
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer
killer in the United States for men and women
behind lung cancer, therefore screening is vital.
Although the statistics are staggering, colorectal cancer is
one of the most detectable, and if found early, most treatable
forms of cancer. The frightening part about colon cancer is
that the most common symptom is often no symptom at all,
though the following may be indications of colon cancer:
• A change in bowel habits
• Diarrhea or constipation
• Narrower than normal stools
• Unexplained weight loss
• Constant tiredness
• Blood in the stool
• Feeling that the bowel does
not completely empty
• Abdominal discomfort:
gas, bloating, fullness,
cramps
• Unexplained anemia
• Vomiting
People over age 50 are at higher risk of developing
colorectal cancer. Other risk factors are:
• Polyps (growths) inside the colon
• Family history of colorectal cancer
• Smoking
• Obesity
• Lack of physical activity
• Drinking too much alcohol
• Health conditions, such as Crohn’s disease or Ulcerative
Colitis, which cause chronic inflammation (ongoing
irritation) of the intestines
Prevention Of Colorectal Cancer
The best way to prevent colorectal cancer is to be screened
regularly starting at age 50 (earlier if you have a family
history or multiple risk factors). If you are nervous about
undergoing a screening test, talk to a friend or family
member who has had the test.

Most patients are given medication to relax during
a flexible sigmoidoscopy or a colonoscopy and don’t
remember the exam. Your doctor will tell you what to
expect and how to prepare for your test.
Does it hurt to get tested?
Some people find the tests for colorectal cancer to be
uncomfortable from the preparation as a result of the
colon cleansing, but most people agree that the benefits to
their health outweigh the discomfort. Most people report
that the actual test itself does not hurt.
If you are age 50 or over, have a family history of
colorectal cancer, or exhibit a medical condition that
puts you at risk for developing colorectal cancer, GET
SCREENED! Talk with your physician today.
Regular activity and exercise can help to reduce your
risk of colorectal cancer. A healthy diet can also assist
in the prevention of colorectal cancer. Diets that low
in fat and high in calcium and fiber are recommended.
You can get calcium from foods like yogurt, cheese and
spinach. Foods like beans, barley and nuts are full of
fiber. Fiber additives can also be found at the pharmacy
and can be mixed with water and juices. According
to the American Cancer Society, several studies have
found a higher risk of colorectal with increased alcohol
use, especially among men.
How Often Should I Get Screened?
Frequency of screening will depend on which screening
test is used. Some tests are done every 1 to 2 years.
Other tests are done every 3 to 10 years. Your doctor
can help you decide which test is right for you and how
often to get screened. Most people can stop getting
screened after age 80. Talk with your doctor about
what’s right for you.

What Screening Tests Are Available?
• Fecal Occult Blood Test (can be done annually at
home)
• Flexible Sigmoidoscopy
• Colonoscopy

What Happens During The Test?
Some tests you can do at home, such as a fecal occult
blood test. Other tests, such as a colonoscopy, must
be done in a clinic or hospital and require a prep
(preparation) prior to the test to make certain that all
contents are eliminated from the colon area.

JUNIOR VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
LEARNING AND HELPING THIS SUMMER
Local students will have the opportunity to gain experience
and volunteer credit hours this summer through the
North Cypress Junior Volunteer program. Each summer,
approximately 130 High School students are accepted
in the program which offers insight into the medical field
and valuable lessons in the workplace. Junior Volunteer
assignments range from escorting visitors to their
destinations, and assisting patients with water, to helping
the Security office and filing paperwork.
WHAT IS REQUIRED TO BECOME A NORTH CYPRESS
JUNIOR VOLUNTEER?
• Be a current High School sophomore or junior
• Submit the application found on our website
www.ncmc-hospital.com no later than April 15th
• Attend one of the mandatory interview sessions
• If accepted in the program, attend the mandatory
orientation and training
