Assoc. Head Coach: .....Alex Mislan (UW-Green Bay ‘07)
Assistant Coaches...................Kristin Drabyn (UMBC, ‘08)

The Coach: The 2015-16 season is Austin Parkinson’s
sixth season as head coach of the IUPUI women’s
basketball team. He led the Jags to back-to-back
20-win seasons in 2012-13 and 2013-14, including a
school-record 23 in 2013-14, and consecutive WNIT
appearances. Parkinson played collegiately at

ratio. He is 10th in Boilermaker history in career
assists.

ORU to shoot Western Illinois out of the gym
last Saturday, 68-60. IUPUI shot a season-high
66.7 percent from 3-pt range (8-for-12).
Danielle Lawrence won Summit League Player
of the Week honors this week after putting up
double digit performances in five of IUPUI’s
last 6 games.
Junior center Mikale Rogers tallied her second
double-double of the season in last Saturday’s

win. (12 pts, 11 reb).
At 11-5, the Jags are fighting to keep even with
the top teams in the Summit League. A win
over Omaha would keep the Jags within a game
of South Dakota & South Dakota State, while
widening the gap between IUPUI (3rd) and
Omaha (5th).
IUPUI boasts the best scoring defense in the
Summit League (57.9 ppg).
Jags are 25th in NCAA Div. I in 3-pt FG defense

THE “KI” TO SUCCESS
•

selection for first-team All-Summit League.
•
Sims was named Summit League Player
of the Week for the third time her career
and the first this season (for her play Dec.
7 - Dec. 14).
•
She was a second-team All-Summit League
performer a year ago as a junior.
•
In her sophomore season, she played in all
32 teams, making seven starts.
•
Through 16 games this season, Sims leads
the squad with 12.2 points per game. She

came in the final seconds as she converted a
three-point play to give the Jags a one-point
lead and a 70-69 win.
•
Rogers is averaging 10.6 ppg and 6.8 rpg.
•
Rogers went for 20 points against Evansville
and poured in a double-double in the Jags’

half against WIU last game. She started the

two games, going 0-12 from beyond the arc,
before lighting it up against VCU to the tune
of 19 points on five made triples.
•
In IUPUI’s latest win, Hall was one of the
key contributors to the 3-point shooting
spree, tallying nine points on 3-of-5 from
downtown.

ball early this season when she poured in 27
points in a rout of Oakland City. She went
9-15 on 3s in that game.
•
95 percent of her made field goals last
season were triples. She’s only played in two
blowout wins this season, but she came
poured in 11 threes on 11-of-21 shooting in

THE JUNGLE
AUSTIN PARKINSON
Head Coach // 6th Season
In just five seasons as the head coach of the IUPUI women’s basketball
program, Austin Parkinson has taken the Jags from a three-win team a year
prior to his arrival to a team that has posted back-to-back 20-win seasons,
three consecutive postseason appearances, and the program’s first
postseason victory in 2013-14.
Since his arrival during the 2010-11 season, Parkinson has directed IUPUI
to an increase in wins through each of his first four seasons. While his
fifth season, last year’s 2015-16 campaign, only earned a mark of 15-16,
Parkinson’s squad reached Summit League postseason play and won their
first game before being eliminated.
In last year’s campaign, a year after being named Summit League Coach of
the Year, Parkinson’s 2013-14 IUPUI team piled up win after win en route to
a 23-10 record and an at-large berth in the WNIT. The Jags embarked on a
nine-game winning streak spanning from Jan. 11 to Feb. 13 and finished the
regular-season as the runner-up for the second season in a row. After being
selected to the WNIT, the Jags went on the road to pick up a win over
Central Michigan, 72-66, giving the program its first Division-I postseason
victory. The group was led by a pair of all-conference performers in
DeAirra Goss and Nevena Markovic, who were first and second-team AllSummit League selections, respectively. Under Parkinson’s guidance, Goss
blossomed into a 17.4 ppg scorer in Summit League-only action during her
senior season, while Markovic became a force down the stretch posting
five of her team-high seven double-doubles during the past seven games.
The success in 2013-14 was built in 2012-13 when Parkinson guided IUPUI
to its first 20-win campaign since joining the Division-I ranks during the
1998-99 season. Included in the 20 wins, were 12 Summit League victories
- the most conference wins since joining the league. For his efforts,
Parkinson was named Summit League Coach of the Year for the first time
in his career, while Kerah Nelson was named a first-team all-conference
performer, Goss was named a second-team all-league performer, and junior
Dee-Dee Bellamy was named the Summit League Defensive Player of the
Year.
The 20-win campaign for the Jaguars also resulted in IUPUI making its first
post-season appearance in its D-I era, when it was selected to participate in
the 2013 WNIT.
Part of the reason for Parkinson’s success in turning the program around
has been his emphasis on recruiting the state of Indiana. In his four
recruiting classes, eight signees have come from the Hoosier State.
“The focus of our program will be on developing the girls into the best
basketball players they can be, but more importantly, to develop them
into young women that are prepared for success in life after basketball,”
Parkinson said.
“Priority number one in recruiting is to build the relationships with players
and coaches across the state of Indiana,” Parkinson added. “There’s an
abundance of talent throughout the Midwest and I look forward to the
opportunity to recruit some of those individuals to IUPUI.”
In his short tenure as the leader of the IUPUI women’s basketball program,
he helped Nelson become a two-time, first-team all-conference performer
following two honorable-mention all-conference campaigns. As a junior
Nelson ranked fifth in the Summit League in scoring averaging 16.2 ppg as a
junior and totaled 518 points, ranking sixth on IUPUI’s single-season scoring
chart and becoming the Jags single-season scoring leader in the Division
I era. Nelson finished her career with 1,614 points, making her IUPUI’s
Division-I all-time scoring leader.
A point guard during his playing days at Purdue under legendary head
coach Gene Keady, Parkinson valued sharing the basketball and limiting
turnovers. Inheriting a team that turned the ball over six more times than
their opponents and averaged less than 10 assists per game in 2009-10,
Parkinson helped the 2010-11 squad to dramatically improve its turnover
margin and assists total and that trend continued the proper direction in
2011-12.
Prior to leading the women’s basketball program, Parkinson served as an
assistant coach of the IUPUI men’s basketball staff for two seasons and

helped both Robert Glenn and Alex Young elevate to First Team All-Summit
League honors in 2010. In addition, the Jags’ 25 wins in 2009-10 were one shy
of the program’s single-season record in that category.
The 32-year old was a four-year letterwinner at Purdue from 2000-04 and
closed his career tied for tenth on the Boilermakers’ all-time assist list
after leading the squad in that category in both his sophomore and seniors
seasons. Additionally, he led the Big Ten in assist-to-turnover ratio in each
of his final three seasons. He received both his B.S. (‘04) and Masters (‘06)
from Purdue in Organizational Leadership and Supervision. In his prep days,
he played at Northwest High School in Kokomo, Ind., and in the Spring of
2014 he was inducted into the inaugural class of the school’s Hall of Fame.
Parkinson comes from impressive basketball pedigree as his father, Bruce, is
Purdue’s all-time assist leader and a member of the Indiana Basketball Hall
of Fame. His grandfather, Jack, played for the legendary Adolph Rupp at
Kentucky and is a member of the Indiana and Kentucky Basketball Halls of
Fame.
