450 YEARS OF WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE 1564 - 2014 Shakespeare‘s The Taming of the Shrew To commemorate our 60th anniversary, and the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare‘s birth, the ZCC is presenting one of his most popular plays: The Taming of the Shrew. The play is set in Padua in the late 16th century: The beautiful and gentle Bianca has many admirers, but her father insists that she will not marry until her shrewish sister, Katherine, is betrothed. Along comes Petruchio, a fortune hunter in search of a wealthy wife. Petruchio marries Katherine. He intends to browbeat her into submission and he denies her food, sleep and new clothes, whilst continuously singing her praises. Katherine seems tamed... The advent of feminism has led some theatre goers to question the relevance of The Taming of the Shrew, but it is a play that continues to delight generations of audiences.
