his upgraded four-court facility has a
stadium court with seating, and three
courts in an upper area, complete with
distinctive shade shelters to keep players

ramps that were removed as the project stages were completed and a crane to
move equipment. But the results proved
to be outstanding.

iming was critical for this winning project, as the track had to be
completed in time for the Bruins’ commencement ceremonies.
The original granite track was removed and replaced with a premanufactured, vulcanized rubber track, complete with eight lanes
and two straightaway extensions. The project included all-weather
“D zones” at the ends that accommodate areas for long jump/triple
jump, high jump and pole vault.

he city found a creative way to use leftover property between a
middle school and high school: build a four-field soccer complex that can hold district-wide soccer meets. The site required excavation of basalt, the lava rock from prehistoric volcanic activity,
but local mineral laws prevented moving the rock from the site, so it
was used for decorative landscaping around the synthetic turf fields.

he fieldhouse accommodates basketball,
volleyball and tennis. But the flooring
had been plagued by concrete moisture problems, and the surface was unusable. The failed
moisture sealer had to be removed and another
product applied before the pre-fabricated 10mm rubber flooring could be put down. Later, custom colors were developed to match the
Mustangs’ school colors.

he college wanted to update and enlarge its
facility, which had a 20-year-old, 160-meter track, to include a new 200-meter track. Expanding the facility posed issues of matching the
new flooring to the existing flooring, which necessitated grinding the surfaces to even them out.
A new pre-fabricated sheet rubber surface completed this outstanding indoor track facility.

Green Award
The ASBA’s annual Awards Program helps to promote the highest standards of construction by recognizing excellence in design, construction and renovation. Any ASBA member
contributing to the design or construction of a project can nominate that project for one of
several industry awards. The projects highlighted in this brochure are winners in the 2010
Awards Program.
From the ASBA Chairman
Our Winners ‘Build It Right’
On behalf of the American Sports Builders Association, I would like to
congratulate the 2010 Outstanding Facilities of the Year Award winners.
The ASBA Awards Program has the goal of promoting the highest standards of construction excellence.
In 1995, the ASBA Board of Directors moved to revise the Awards Program and at the 1996
Technical Meeting, we began the tradition of honoring the award winners at this annual Association
gathering. A complete listing of this year’s winners of awards, along with the winners from the past
two years, can be found on ASBA’s website at www.sportsbuilders.org.
ASBA’s theme—“Build It Right”—is exemplified by the ASBA Awards Program. The quality work
exemplified by this year’s award-winning facilities is at the heart of ASBA’s purpose. We want to continue to recognize and support this type of quality throughout the industry. ASBA’s programs are
built around educating the professionals in our industry, providing networking opportunities for
our members, and recognizing the quality work that we do every day.
As you look at the complete listing of award winners, you will notice mention of builders and suppliers on each project. The strong partnerships that exist within ASBA among its builders, designers
and suppliers are at the heart of our success. We work together to “Build It Right” and have a strong
record of quality and creative projects like the ones represented through the 2010 Outstanding Facilities of the Year.
Any ASBA members contributing to the design and/or construction of an outstanding project or
facility are encouraged to submit an application for one of several industry awards.
Congratulations to this year’s award winners!

T
he first- ever ASBA Green Award goes to this new 56,000-squarefoot indoor multi-purpose facility for athletics, fitness and recreation. The project, which achieved a LEED Gold rating, includes a
high-energy-efficiency field house with a synthetic turf field, energy-cost reductions of over 30%, and a 30% reduction in water use.
Also, more than 50% of construction waste was diverted away from
landfills, nearly 40% of all construction materials used contained
recycled content, and more than 10% of all materials used were generated within 500 miles of the project.
