A day that calls us to come out and enjoy, maybe come out to work or play. After all the cloudy, wet, dreary days we have had, this is a blessing. However, in view of the fact I am writing this article on June 20, 2014, we think back to one year ago. Although Elkford received some damage due to the flooding of the river, most of us had our ears and eyes attuned to the disaster in Alberta. Especially if you have friends or family in the affected area. Paul and I were in High River last week and saw the restoration that has gone on in the months since the flood. Many homes have been cleaned up, many businesses have been reopened. Work is being done on the Sheep River to protect the residents from the river overflowing again and causing the damage that we witnessed last year. However, many people are still displaced, many of them living in trailers south of the town. Their houses in High River are going to be destroyed because of the massive damage that was done. These homes are boarded up and a very sad reminder of the power of water. How does a family move forward when they have lost everything? Thankfully, people are resilient and many people reached out to help other people in the emergency. That was very positive to hear about, however, there were also the other stories of people not stepping outside their doors to assist a neighbor. The owners of the areas affected must take time to grieve the loss. It is important to work through the anger, the loss of precious mementos, the loss of friends or neighbors and the overall grief that affects an entire town or area. Talking out the frustration, crying alone and with loved ones, finding something in the mess that makes you laugh. These are healing events. Also reach out to others and reach out to the Lord... He can be and will be ( if you ask) your stabilizing factor. I am aware many people would be angry with God after a devastating flood or other disaster... however, did anyone ask God if that is where they should build or live? God is there to listen to you, He is there to sustain you through the struggles and scripture tells us... Joshua 1:5 ... “I will never leave you or forsake you.” These are the words of God Almighty. Therefore when life is really hard, where there seems to be no answers, call on Him who will never leave you or forsake you. God is reliable. Until September, have a safe summer. You Are Shrinking! Did you know, after having read this, by the end of the day, you will be 3mm shorter than when you woke up! Each day you SHRINK!!! (Don’t worry, when you go to bed, you will regrow again) But, how could this happen? Between each of the 24 bones of your spine there is a cushion. A jelly doughnut (called a disc) that allows us to move in every direction, touch our toes, stretch, walk, basically everything. These discs are mostly made up of water. (Hopefully you are drinking more water now that it’s summer!!) While most of the cells, tissues and organs of your body get nutrients from the blood that flows everywhere, these discs have NO BLOOD SUPPLY. So, how do they get fed and stay healthy? I introduce to you the accordion explanation: You have 24 bones separated by “accordions” in your spine. And, just like an accordion needs back and forth motion to make it work, SO DOES YOUR SPINE!!!! Exercise, gentle stretching in all directions, these are how our spine discs regrow and stay healthy every day. Sitting for long periods, computers, poor posture, driving, ALL cause our accordions to stop playing. :( So this summer, stay hydrated and be sure to check us out at our new location on highway 43 to keep your spine functioning at 100%. We only get one spine in this lifetime, please take good care of yours. According to SD5 Board chair, Frank Lento, Bolander has recently returned from the United Arab Emirates. In his four years at the Canadian International School in Abu Dhabi, Bolander served in a variety of positions, including Director of Facilities. Prior to Abu Dhabi, Bolander taught in Regina as a teacher and extra-curricular coach. In 2009 he was a teacher on call for SD5 and coached the senior boys at Mount Baker Secondary School (MBSS). “Elkford has an international reputation and appeal as a desired work destination. Doug’s recent experience in international education reflects his commitment to working with diverse groups of people and dealing with everexpanding directives,” says Lento. “These qualities, along with Doug’s exemplary teaching and coaching background make him the ideal choice for Elkford Secondary School.” Bolander was born in Edmonton, Alberta, but spent half of his childhood and most of his teaching career in Regina, Saskatchewan. While his background is in history, social studies, psychology and law, Bolander also developed a high performance psychology class and taught in distance education. Bolander also has an extensive coaching history having coached basketball for community, high school, university and provincial organizations and soccer at various levels. “I’m excited to be part of the Elkford community, with its natural beauty and growing cultural diversity,” says Bolander. “Teaching provides the opportunity to promote respect for all things and people. In addition to working collaboratively with a great team of students, staff and parents, I look forward to sharing my passion for education and lifelong learning in the implementation and promotion of extracurricular activities.” Bolander will be joined by wife Brenda. Their two children, Chrystal and Jordan, reside in Calgary. Aside from coaching in his spare time, Bolander enjoys biking, tennis and a skiing. For information on enrolling at Elkford Secondary School please visit the SD5 website at sd5.bc.ca or contact the school directly. Dean Chandler was recently appointed principal of Rocky Mountain Elementary School (RMES) in Elkford as of the 2014/15 school year by the School District 5 (SD5) Board of Education, following the retirement of Shirley McGale. According to SD5 Board chair, Frank Lento, Chandler has an affinity for small BC communities, having worked in Prince George, New Aiyansh, Kitimat and most recently Telegraph Creek, a small, close knit community a few hours from the Alaska border. “Dean’s commitment to community is as important to him as his commitment to education, which is considerable,” says Lento. “Dean’s leadership style is inclusive and his experience in smaller communities with blended populations is definitely an asset given Elkford’s own small but diverse population.” Chandler was born in Prince George and has worked in education for the last twenty-one years with eight of those years in administration. While Chandler’s education and training focuses on the sciences and physical education, his passion and talent for music led Chandler to create a school music program inclusive of a rock band and individual and group acts that performed at school and community events in Telegraph Creek. “I look forward to getting to know the students, staff and parents of Rocky Mountain Elementary and am excited to be part of such a dedicated team of education professionals. I’m also excited about the prospect of offering activities that strengthen the individual interests of our students, helping them to develop into great young citizens.” An accomplished musician, Chandler plays guitar, sings, writes and records his own music. He also enjoys reading and writing in his off time. For information on enrolling at Rocky Mountain Secondary School please visit the SD5 website at sd5.bc.ca or contact the school directly. Please think about RMES when you are cleaning out your children’s bookshelves this summer. If you would like to donate your children’s books, you can drop them off at the Elkford Public Library. The little buddies took part in a pageant night by being introduced onstage by their candidate and presenting flowers to their big buddy during the evening gown portion of the evening. It is a way for the candidates to be positive role models to the little girls. The excitement built throughout the evening and the panel of judges had their work cut out for them. All of the candidates did a fantastic job and were flawless. The guests enjoyed wonderful talent; from artistic to musical to poetry. And as always, the Frugal Fashion Show was a hit. Visiting royalty teams from Trail, Cranbrook, Osoyoos, Kamloops and one BC Ambassador were in attendance to offer support to the candidates. As the evening came to an end and the judges had done their work, the new 2014 royalty team were crowned. Miss Elkford 2014 is Nicole Klein and Elkford Princess & Miss Congeniality is Elli Takenaka. The two will represent Elkford at a variety of events both locally and across British Columbia during their one year reign. We are very fortunate to have the support of local groups and businesses that sponsor a candidate and some amazing people who volunteer their time to put on the workshops for our candidates. Thank you also to the District of Elkford for their continuing support of our program. Approximately 180 people were in attendance on Saturday May 31st, as the 2014 Miss Elkford candidates took to the stage in the Community Conference Centre. After five months of workshops and preparation, the candidates started their day with a personal interview with the judges, followed by a luncheon. At the evening event the girls presented their sponsor speech, topic speech, talent, frugal fashion, evening gown and impromptu question. The candidates were scored by a panel of three judges on a point based system. For each category the candidate was given a ranking. Each ranking had a point value. For example a candidate might be ranked first for speech and third for evening gown. At the end of the evening the candidate with the most points was crowned Miss Elkford 2014, the second highest points was the 2014 Elkford Princess. Miss Congeniality 2014 was chosen by secret ballot by the candidates and program directors. The 2014 Miss Elkford Youth Ambassador candidates were: Morgan Mudge – sponsored by Paula Smith/Royal Lepage/EK Realty; Elli Takenaka – sponsored by the Elkford Early Childhood Development Committee; Nicole Klein – sponsored by EKCCU; Clarissa Hollowink – sponsored by the Lamplighter Pub and Aniessa Bowen – sponsored by Western Financial Group. The 2014 Little Buddies were: London Philpotts, Alexandra Klassen, Emily Joy, Chloe Reed and Sky Sharpe. Little girls in grade 1-3 could apply to be a little buddy. Applications were handed out at school for the little girls to take home. Applicant’s names were placed in a hat and candidates drew out the name of their little buddy. This little girl followed the candidate through the program with some fun activities along the way. This year they had a Debbie Kliment 32
